to the Welsh National Tennis and ChampionshipsPadel2022.
The Welsh National Championships is one of the key weeks in our Welsh tennis calendar and we’re making it bigger and better than ever before. This week we’re hosting junior, open and senior events, as well as wheelchair, visually impaired and Padel competitions in an action-packed week of tennis. Following the pandemic, we believe it’s more important than ever to bring people together to play, compete, socialise and enjoy everything that tennis has to offer. That’s why we’re delighted to welcome players, parents and spectators back to this annual festival of Welsh tennis, and want to say thank you for joining us here this week in South Wales. We’ll also be welcoming coaches, officials and guests throughout the week. I’d like to extend my thanks to the sponsors and partners who are helping us invest into this event in 2022, and I look forward to seeing everyone on court throughout the competition. Before that, after starting his tennis in Colwyn Bay, he was at Wrexham Tennis Centre, before relocating to train at the LTA High-Performance Centre at Bolton. He showed great potential from an early age. His fantastic attitude has helped him to maximise this.
XUMIMI Mimi Xu,14, is from Swansea. She trains at the LTA National Academy in Loughborough. Mimi started her tennis journey playing at Swansea Lawn Tennis & Squash Club. Her talent was obvious for all to see from an early age and she moved onto an extensive training programme at Swansea Tennis Centre. In addition to her talent Mimi also has an excellent work ethic. This has enabled her to excel not just in sport, but academically and in music as well.
Viktor, who was ranked in the top 10 of the Under-14 European rankings in 2020, has just broken into the top 250 players in the world in the Under-18 ITF rankings. He reached the final of the Under-16 Boys’ singles GB National Championships earlier this year. This success saw him handed a wildcard for Junior Wimbledon this year. Despite a first-round loss, he has another two years to play in the event. His experience this year will serve him well for the future.
Viktor’s record at the Welsh National Championships reads under-9 champion in 2015, and under-12 and under-14 winner in 2017 and 2018. 2017 also saw him take the under-12 doubles tournament silverware.
Mimi has enjoyed a great deal of success at the Welsh National Championships, winning the under-8 tournament in 2018, the under-9 and under-10 tournament the following year, and the under-12 competition in 2018.
Two former Welsh National Championship competitors, Mimi Xu and Viktor Frydrych, played in the Junior Wimbledon Championships earlier this year. This is their story so far.
Mimi became the first Welsh player to win the Under-14 Tennis Europe Category One event in Bolton in 2020 and was one of the youngest players to make her Junior Wimbledon debut, aged just 13, in 2021. She added the Under-16 and Under-18 Girls’ singles National titles to her list of achievements earlier this year. These achievements gave her the opportunity to play in the Wimbledon Ladies’ Qualifying. She also received a wildcard for the Junior event, where she reached the last 16.
FRYDRYCHVIKTOR Viktor Frydrych, 16, is from Colwyn Bay but now lives in Chester. After training in Sweden for a few years, he is now at the LTA National Academy in Stirling.
