In 2015, I joined the PoP Family and continue to be impressed by the organization’s dedicated supporters. In the coming year, PoP will focus on creating sustainable, lasting impact by investing heavily in our programs. We will continue to build schools as we deepen programmatic impact to ensure that PoP students have access to quality education and dedicated teachers inside the classroom. PROGRAMS Although Pencils of Promise is known as a school building organization that provides access to education, 2015 marked our shift into a learning organization focused on quality education outcomes. With our dynamic approach to ensure quality education through our programs, we are reshaping the landscape of education in the developing world. Here are the key programs we focused on in 2015.

Although there is a designated 30 minute timeslot for reading, classrooms in Ghana severely lack relevant, age-appropriate books (the overwhelming majority have none). Without books, students don’t read — an e-reader provides more than 100 books in English and local languages, providing students with a chance to practice reading not only in school, but also at home and outside the classroom.

HOW WE COLLECT D ATA I N T H E F I E L D We have Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) teams on the ground in each country to extensively assess and track the progress of our students. We consistently evaluate our methodologies to ensure students achieve the best possible results and make changes to our programming if we don’t see progress. We rely on measurable data to qualify our success and remain willing to change our goals or in-classroom methods to establish the long-term effectiveness of our schools.
PoP utilized Tangerine, an electronic data collection software, in Guatemala for the first time in February 2015 in the regions of Quiché and Altiplano. Our M&E team went through 2 days of training on how to use the Google Nexus 7 tablets and the Tangerine software. We then implemented over 1,500 exams — without a single technical glitch — in the field over 6 weeks. The team performed EGRA and EGMA testing (USAID based assessments) in 24 different schools and collected information on the literacy and numeracy performance of primary school students across grades 1-6, providing PoP with valuable data that we will use to assess the impact of our programs. Because of tablets in the field, our team reported a 30% timecut in testing and uploading the results. Now we’re able to analyze and iterate on the data, faster, which will be used to improve our programs and help more children achieve literacy.

As part of the Upgrade Your World (UYW) campaign to celebrate the launch of Windows10, our friends at Microsoft supported PoP with both financial and in-kind donations to further drive our efforts and raise awareness of our work. Windows10’s donation helped PoP build 10 new schools in Guatemala, and though our Match Day in December, helped us raise enough to fund an additional 42 schools around the globe. Additionally, a donation of Surface Pro 4 tablets will allow PoP’s M&E teams to collect data in the field more accurately and quickly to ensure that our ultimate goal — helping students become literate — is actually happening. Windows10 also went on a #PoPFieldTrip to see the impact of their donation and collect great media for the UYW campaign.

N O TA B L E C A M PA I G N E R S Our online fundraising platform is a community where PoP supporters can rally family and friends to join them in their goal to create education for all. Here are some of our favorite campaigners from 2015.
ANGELA RUDOLPH Angela, a 4th grader from Australia, started her PoP campaign almost a year ago. She’s held many different events to raise money for PoP, including a trivia night with 150 people, a giant garage sale, a street BBQ, giving up her birthday and asking for donations, a yoga day and a fundraising dinner at a Golf Club. Next up? A giant “Jar of Pencils” competition - Angela will visit schools and have students make a donation to guess how many pencils are in the jar! " I think it’s important to know how to read, write and do math so you can have more opportunities for jobs when you’re older."
B R I A N D 'A P I C E Brian, a US Army Veteran & English teacher in Thailand, is riding his bicycle around the United States to raise money for PoP. He’ll pedal 11,000+ miles around the country sharing his story and why he’s decided to give back to education. Along the way, he’s been hosting speaking engagements at schools, libraries, corporations and various military and veteran organizations. “Education means the world to me. L I N DY TS A N G Lindy, also known to her fans as BubzBeauty, is a YouTuber, beauty guru and vlogger, she started a TeeSpring campaign & raised $50,000 to build two schools in Laos with PoP. “Being able to see one of the schools my community and I built together was one of the most surreal things I have ever experienced. Together, we truly made a difference to the lives of so many children and we won’t stop here!”
RAMIT SETHI For the entire month of June, Ramit’s company launched a campaign to build schools for underprivileged children around the world. He matched any donation to the campaign 2-to-1 and far surpassed his fundraising goal, ultimately raising $304,586 for PoP! “You and I already know the power of education. We’ve spent years improving our own careers, our businesses, our finances. Let’s spread the benefit of education to the rest of the world.”
EDDIE & NOAH HAN Eddie and his son Noah met three students while visiting an opening ceremony at a school in Laos. This sparked their interest in fundraising for PoP, and they worked together to build their first school in Laos. “Because of schools like the ones PoP builds, children like these have a much better environment to be educated and to journey toward their dreams or develop new dreams.”

W H AT ' S N E X T 250 million children worldwide lack basic reading, writing and math skills. At PoP, we’re working to change that.
Our actions and decisions are driven by data. We strongly believe that strategy is a living, breathing entity that needs to be as flexible as the environment demands. Education, especially in some of the most rural areas of Africa, Asia and Latin America, is complex and full of changing situations where there are no perfect answers… at least for very long. Through our robust Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) strategy, we conduct rigorous short, medium and long-term assessments in order to improve our programs and demonstrate our results with full transparency. We hold ourselves accountable to both our beneficiaries and donors by remaining as transparent as possible in everything that we do.
By investing in data quality and taking a technology-first approach to data collection, we’re gaining faster, more accurate information about our programs and school builds, helping us achieve our goal of making students literate. To maintain our high standard of transparency, in 2016 we'll be introducing our Quarterly Transparency Reports and Country Wrap Reports, which will serve as a place for PoP to publicly share our most upto-date results and data.
Our goals for the future are clear. First, we need the right education answer: that is, what moves the needle for a student to become proficient in literacy. We have a pipeline of micro innovations (classroom practices, tools, methods) that we’ve vetted. For every 25 we research, we will pilot a few and scale one (the lucky one that has data evidence of efficacy). Second, we’re going to use what works. 250 million kids in our world cannot read or write. We can solve that with innovative methods, materials and technologies in the classroom and do it in a cost-effective, individualized learning way.
Our results and data from 2015 demonstrate that we’re already on the path to becoming a best-in-class and best-in-practice nonprofit. In 2016 and beyond, we hope to scale our methods and in-classroom interventions to the point that other organizations, and even governments, look to Pencils of Promise as a leader in creating transformational change for children around the world.
