Letter From the publisher
With all the excitement surrounding the launch of the iPad, people have been asking about its impact on an illustrated list such as Lantern. Don’t misunderstand me, I love the new technology but wonder if it will (or can) ever be the book’s equal with the satisfying permanence of ink on paper, tactile cover finishes and a form and a logic that we find familiar? Lantern books are written and illustrated with passion and imagination. They provide a complete experience, a depth of inspiration and authenticity that is impossible to find elsewhere. When you Google a recipe you already know what you want. When you spend time with a Lantern cookbook you discover new recipes, ideas and a cultural setting that will expand and enrich your knowledge of food and its preparation. Our authors seek veracity in all the subject areas we cover – always with the shape of the book in mind – be it Rex Dupain and his stirring observations of Australian people in their landscape or Dee Nolan and Earl Carter travelling 2000 kilometres of an ancient pilgrimage route across France and Spain. And they submit their materials with the knowledge that the books we produce might be around for a very long time. Much pride and love is poured into the creation of these titles. It is our hope that these volumes earn their place not only on your bookshelves but also in your hearts. Julie Gibbs Publishing Director
