The history of Smithfield market began in the 11th century and was known as Smoothfield. It was a large open public space with many activities happening, for example, cloth fair and meat fair were once a week but there were also sports and domestic events. The freedom of the old Smithfield market inspired us to imagine new relationships among people. The regularity of the structure is not considered as excess of rules but as an open field with possibilities of openness and diversity. Research in the housing focused on the shift of its inhabitants and the domestic space. Nuclear family is not the only component of our society. There are more types of inhabitants’ groups, such as, single parent family, groups of friends, and single persons. We propose a housing model which is not based on the nuclear family as productive and reproductive unit of society. We want to create a housing framework that accommodates a diverse range of living conditions for all groups of people. The proposal intents to reduce the concept of housing to its essential and explore the possibility of sharing and how it promotes relationships between people. Private spaces are minimized to test the extend of sharing between people. Sharing is essential in the scheme because it promotes different forms of social aggregation. The new form of housing is not a solution to the unaffordable housing crisis, but an alternative way of living and socializing. The thresholds between public, sharing and private is delicate and controlled. Roads between the buildings are kept but the continuity and connection of the complex is shown trough the unique way of living they share and the sharing program of the whole complex. 01

The third structure is a thick wall wrapping a 3x3 steel structure. The central 8 squares are turned into living space for large group of students, employees, around 30-60 persons. Beds are separated by shelves surrounding the central double height space is sharing between them. The central most square with the dome is sharing space for the inhabitants. The outer area (the wall) is transformed into spaces for inhabitants to work, such as classrooms, offices. The zone between the living and the working is a public pedestrian walk way with trees. 05
The second structure is a large vault supported by big columns. The residential units occupied the space between columns which is 12x6 meters for group of six people (friends, families or couples). The “bed 3x8 meters and can be subdivided by curtains. The divisions between each units are shelfs, closet and three bathrooms, and is aligned with the structure itself. The .The large column free central space is a large sharing space for the whole complex and sometimes public. Markets, fairs and other short time installations can be set up in the space.
The first building with generic 9mx9m structural grid is turned into a space for single persons. They have a private “bed which is 2 meter in diameter surrounded by curtains hanged from a device attached to the column. The columns also have toilets, showers attached. The space between their beds are flexible for them to share things, clothes, books, tables, chairs which reflects the relationships of the inhabitants. The middle space is for fixed sharing programs, such as kitchen and laundry and also a gym for the whole complex to share. 06

In Gowanus, the existing buildings are mainly heavy or light industry, recycling centers and auto related programs. And Gowanus community is promoting the neighborhood to keep the industrial and artist atmosphere and , at the same time, become a more lively neighborhood. Considering the water pollution that left from the past and the existing artistic atmosphere, the programs are decided to be recycling material laboratory, artist community center and residential.
Site Strategy On site, there are three existing buildings that was use to be auto repair store. Without destroying all the existing, most part of the existing buildings are kept and open up the southwest side of the existing to bring people into the site in all direction. The other two very important issue to solve on the site is the contaminated soil caused by former industrial activities and the flood condition. The solution is to create an elevated ground to put some public space and programs on the elevated level, so even when the flood comes, people still have place to hangout and building and community life can continue. On the program aspect, factory and public garden are put on the water side of the site and paves cobble stone on the ground in order to prevent the water come to the programs on the grounds that is more active.

Concept In this project, mega scale structures creates huge neutral frames and incorporated human scale structures to define spaces and provide privacy between programs. The platforms are arranged to create variations in space, so the residents can have more double space and outdoor spaces. The use of mega structure not only responses to the industrial atmosphere but also allows for a more free section, with soaring vertical spaces and larger spaces without a column to situate industry programs and community program. The huge column is also expressed in each apartment. Instead of hiding it in walls, the domestic programs are organized around the column in space. The facade system is a layer of skins composed with a finer grid structure which provide a range of weather-enclosures, from semi-outdoor to fully indoor spaces.

The units are intentional arrange around the mega scale column. The intention is to make people can appreciate the mega scale structure not only from it’s appearance but also through their everyday life. And it also becomes a functional piece in the units, like shelf, screen wall. Human scale structures are also brings into the units. 10

Landscape House Instructor : Davide Sacconi Collaborated with : Yalun Li
To challenge the traditional idea of homes and residences, the project, a landscape house for ten people aims to enhance communication and interaction between people by undermining the concept of privacy in this house. The contemporary society treats privacy as one of the most important human rights and any act of involving in others’ private lives would be consider offensive. Meanwhile, people constantly construct their social lives and beatifies their personal images via social media. The disconnections between a person’s two faces have begun to distort relationships between people. And architecture of traditional houses, with isolated rooms accelerates this disconnection between one’s private life and his outward appearance. The project seeks an alternative way of living so that the inhabitants could see others’ actual life. Opposing to the traditional division of walls, the project uses topography as a device to generate an ambiguous condition between public and private. The project is situated in a broad artificial landscape with a square roof and glassed wall setting parameter of the inhabitable space with various material. In a subtle topography, we created steeper slopes to house more private programs, such as bedroom and bathroom. The steep slope put those private programs in a less exposed area, remaining accessible physically and visually. Unlike, in traditional homes, a room is an enclosed space surrounded by walls on all four sides. The roof of the house acts like a “cutter” that takes a piece of the topography as the inhabitable space and sets a parameter of the project. The columns supporting the roof are arrayed on a grid, forming a field condition. 15

The program of the building is set as a writer institution including varies programs like bookstore, lecture hall, library and residential that all can be used for both for stuff and visitors. The intention of the facade is to use it as a metaphor of the preface of the book that draws people’s attention and welcome people inside. Another agenda of the studio is to study the elegance of plan through a series of exercises and studying of precedence.

The site is located at Harvard Square, across from Harvard main campus. Harvard Square is a connection point of the commercial and academic zone of Harvard University. Transportation on the site is variable and available. All the factors make this site become a popular area of the neighborhood. The existing condition of the site is active outdoor space for Harvard students and visitors. This is significant to me since it breaks the barrier between academic and daily life. The focus of this project is how to preserve this exciting public space, keep the fluid circulation, even more, continue the public space into the building.

The site used to be an industry zone from 1788 to end of 19th century. Because of the flourishing industrial activities during the 19th century, resorts, hotels and recreation park were built around 1870s. However, the heavy industry generated severe pollution that caused the decline and eventually abandon of the area. These historical activities and urban development left traces on the surrounding area.

This project focus on collecting and expressing the traces of historical activities around the site. To reflect the history of industry, the project extracted the spatial, formal and material qualities of historical elements such as bar building, oil tank and salt field to generate the design. The recreation aspect of the site history is used in promoting the education aim of the children museum by creating interactive exhibitions with plant, water and bio-compost. 4

The site is located in Los Angeles, across from SCI-ARC. The program of the architecture is a nursery school and park. By using vision and creating preferable spots with shading systems, the project offers an opportunity to people who lives in the city to keep their vision and feelings away from the skyscrapers and busy city life of Los Angeles. Small installations, urban furniture and plants are used in order to capture people’s attention in the park from the crowded surrounding environment. Circulations of different groups of people are regulated to differentiate public/ private relationships between the two highly distinctive programs. In the park, public will have a fluid walking experience without realizing or interfering with the nursery school. For the students and parents, the nursery school has a direct street access to keep the student safe in the school. However, they still have the opportunity to enter the green houses and a beautiful views to the river. On a larger scale, the project also considered potential users in the city. The accesses of the park considered people from the train station and SCI-ARC. The school are arranged in the north where is more convenient for transportation.

Automatic kitchen system alters the way we live. The system planned daily meal based on personal perferences of tastes and nutrition balances.
For dierent age groups, the system oers dierent options. Smoked salmon bagel is a popular choice of many families with young adults and small children. It is full of nutrition and also decilous.
