We are passionate about working with wood, its colour, its texture and feel. We continuously strive to create the most beautiful classical and traditionally styled furniture for kitchens, homes and offices. Our furniture is handmade in Ireland using the finest natural materials from managed resources.
WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN WE ARE CURIOUS, INTERESTED, E X C I T E D A N D A D V E N T U R O U S John Bosco Furniture was founded by John Bosco Carroll in Ireland, and has been in operation since 1998. Our company specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of high-end, bespoke, in-frame, classic and traditional styled kitchens, furniture and interiors, for discerning customers in Ireland, the UK and further afield. We are meticulous about the design of our kitchens and furniture, their materials and finish. We laboriously explore every project, from concept and design exploration, to the choice finishes we select. We use only the best materials and best manufacturing methods to ensure our furniture lasts a lifetime. For example the drawers in our kitchens and furniture are always made from solid wood, dovetailed on all corners, and we fit them using hidden ‘soft close’ runners. We can make our cabinet doors from any sustainable hardwood, in any thickness and style and in either flat or curved versions. We fit them using standard butt hinges or hidden ‘soft close’ versions. Our kitchen and furniture interiors can be made from solid hardwood, birch plywood, laminated birch plywood or melamine faced fibreboards. For each of our clients, we create beautiful bespoke kitchens and furniture pieces, believed to be the very best available anywhere in the world.
EACH OF OUR KITCHENS AND F U R N I T U R E P I E C E S I S T R U LY BESPOKE, MEANING WE CAN D E S I G N A N D M A N U FA C T U R E TO A L L S T Y L E S , S I Z E S A N D TA S T E S . We produce all our furniture in an ‘in frame’ style, using solid wood cabinetry. The style of our furniture is classical and each piece is designed with or without embellishments to suit the discerning needs of our clients. Our furniture is truly bespoke, in that we design and create specifically to suit our clients, their homes and their style preferences. No two pieces of furniture are ever the same. Our cabinet doors are framed in seasoned wood using scribed joints and then fitted in to timber frames using solid brass or chrome butt hinges, or hidden modern soft close hinges. This is one of the most skilled areas of cabinet making, whereby doors are fitted within a frame (hence the phrase ‘in frame’). This demands much greater time and skill than doors which are flush mounted over a carcass. The very best furniture and kitchens are always made in a classical ‘in frame’ style. The average clearance around a door and its frame is typically 2.5mm, at John Bosco we keep the clearances a lot smaller, as small as 1mm, depending on application. The smaller the clearance the greater the skill required.
Modern trends in classical ‘in frame’ kitchens have seen the introduction of curved doors, drawers and various curved cabinets and island units. At John Bosco we are no stranger to curved cabinetry. Making curved cabinets, doors and drawers demands the greatest cabinet making skills of all, skills that are so necessary for creating bespoke classical kitchens and furniture. We have been designing and creating beautiful kitchens and furniture incorporating curved cabinetry since we first began in business, and as our work is truly bespoke we can create to any curvature required. Designing and creating beautiful classical furniture should also ensure that this furniture lasts a lifetime or more. Furniture that needs to last shouldn’t be fitted to cheap carcass interiors but to interiors manufactured from materials which give structural rigidity and also look beautiful. We generally manufacture all of our carcasses from birch plywood laminated with hardwearing laminates. Birch plywood is made from natural layers of birch timber glued together with the grain of each layer set perpendicular from the other layers above and below it. As wood is a natural living material it needs to move with changes in humidity, thereby expanding and contracting. This expansion and contraction occurs mostly across the grain, so in birch plywood, each layer because it’s perpendicular to the other layer above and below it, will cancel out the movement of the other layer. As a result birch plywood has the greatest stability of all natural timber products, and when it is laminated with a high density laminate it is also durable, hardwearing and easy to clean.
At John Bosco we join the carcass of our units to the frame with a continuous hidden glued plywood joint. This system was developed by us and is totally unique to our company. It gives us total rigidity in our cabinets and allows us to keep our clearances as low as 1mm around the doors and drawers of our furniture. It also eliminates the use of unappealing modesty blocks, screws, and nails.
