Mission Statement Our mission is to provide quality third level undergraduate and postgraduate courses to adult and continuing education students on a part-time basis in County Laois.

Laois Third Level – Making Education Accessible During the last ten years, Laois Third Level has provided quality third level courses in County Laois. The courses on offer are for adult and continuing education students who wish to study on a part-time basis. Classes take place in Portarlington, Portlaoise and any other town in the county that request a third level course to be delivered. The LTL Centre in Portarlington works as an outreach centre. Students attend classes locally and are awarded their certification from the university or educational institution validating the programme of study.

Laois Third Level – The Place to Study Over the last ten years, LTL has established itself as the main provider of quality, flexible, third level education in the Midlands. In those ten years, Information and Communication Technologies have changed the face of education. The development of the internet and the availability of broadband enables courses at LTL to be delivered in ways never before possible. For example: Our education partner, UCD, delivers its course by satellite from a virtual classroom in Dublin to our centre in Portarlington.

We have state-of-the-art computer room facilities that allow our students on-demand access to learning opportunities.

Each classroom is equipped with information technology including ceiling mounted projector systems.

Laois Third Level is very much learner-centred. For that reason, we appreciate the individual differences that students bring to the educational setting. Therefore, we do our best to support different learning styles and circumstances. We also insist that our education partners choose excellent lecturers who are committed to and interested in delivering part-time programmes to adults and continuing education students. Business Certificate in Public Management NFQ Level 6 Is this programme for you? This is a one-year, part-time programme which provides a systematic introduction to the subjects at the heart of pubic management in Ireland. Students take four subjects and address such crucial topics as constitutional law, the principles of economics, the Irish system of government and the most influential theories of management. The certificate is both a stand-alone qualification and the first year of the four-year BA (Hons) programme. Students who successfully complete this year can enter the second year of the Diploma in Public Management or the BA (Hons) programme where they will have an opportunity to specialise in a field that is of particular relevance to them. For over 25 years, this programme has proved invaluable to students who require a solid grounding in subjects that are fundamental to public management. It is a good choice for those returning to education and who are keen to a third level qualification in one academic year, with an option to continue to degree level. Typical students on this programme work at junior or middle level in government departments, local authorities or other State-sponsored agencies.

Business Certificate in Business Studies NFQ Level 6 Minor Award Is this programme for you? This is a one-year, part-time programme that provides a systematic introduction to modern business theory and practice. Students take four subjects and address such crucial topics as accounting techniques, research and quantitative methods, the Human Resource management function in modern organisations and marketing strategies. The Certificate is both a stand-alone qualification and the first year of the four-year Bachelor of Business Studies (Hons) programme. Students who successfully complete this year can enter the second year of the BBS (Hons), where they will have the opportunity to obtain an interim diploma qualification and specialise in a field of particular relevance to them. Typical students on this programme want to obtain a solid understanding of subjects at the core of business life. This one-year programme aims to meet that need. While many students wish to develop a career in private sector industry (financial services, marketing, business management, and so on), the subjects studied have a wide application and the programme attracts a diverse student body. Business Certificate in Irish Government and Politics NFQ Level 6 Minor Award Is this programme for you? This one-year programme introduces students to the political institutions and systems that determine how Ireland is governed. The programme has two main components. The first component: explains the powers of the Houses of the Oireachtas the voting system in operation in Ireland; and the organisation of government. Throughout, comparisons are made with the structures and systems in other countries, including the UK and Germany. The second component: focuses on social administration in Ireland; outlines how welfare, education and housing services are delivered. Typical students on this programme come from various backgrounds but have the common interest of learning about the Irish political and social administration systems. Business Diploma in European Union Studies NFQ Level 6 Is this programme for you? This is a one-year, part-time programme that provides a comprehensive analysis of the theory and practice of European integration in the modern era. Its three modules explain and critique the concepts and practices that have determined the laws and policies of the EU and assess the political and economic challenges that the EU faces in the early decades of the 21st century. Graduates of this wide-ranging course will be able to speak with some authority on the fundamental principles and workings of the EU. Expressly designed for those who want to obtain a nationally recognised qualification while remaining in work, the Diploma is delivered through a blend of distance education and weekend seminars at the IPA in Dublin. The EU is a subject most people would claim to be familiar with. News reports about ‘Europe’ or ‘Brussels’ feature prominently in our newspapers and other media and we are continually told that EU decisions are of great importance for Ireland. Despite this familiarity, however, many people can find it difficult to define what the EU is, explain what its institutions do, or describe how it passes laws. The Diploma will appeal to all those interested in the EU, whether they are working in central or local government, in the private sector or for a voluntary organisation. This is an introductory-level course and no prior knowledge of the EU is presumed.

Business Diploma in Health Economics NFQ Level 6 Is this programme for you? This programme is of 18 months duration run over two academic years and comprises four modules: The Management Process Managing Resources Health Policy and Planning Human Resource Management The programme will interest those who have recently moved into a management role and established managers who want to develop their management skills in a healthcare context. Participants on this programme must be working in management roles as assessment relates directly to the individual’s job. How is the programme delivered? The programme can only be taken by distance learning through the Institute of Public Administration. Students must also participate in workshops and engage in action learning in their own workplace. Students are required to attend a number of seminars at the IPA.

Business Diploma in Law â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Specific Purpose Certificate NFQ Level 7

Is this programme for you? The Diploma in Law is a one-year, part-time programme that addresses the basic laws and legal principles that determine and influence the work of the State and private enterprise. The programme focuses on four key subjects and serves as an ideal introduction for those who have no prior knowledge of law. Students will learn about, among other things, how the Irish courts operate, the rights protected by the Constitution, the legal powers of State bodies, the laws governing contracts and business relationships and the laws that protect employees. The programme offers a comprehensive introduction to law in just one academic year. It moves between constitutional, business, administrative and employment law, and attracts a diverse range of students. Many are also attracted by the very flexible delivery method. Business Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Public Management NFQ Level 8

Is this programme for you? The BA in Public Management is a four-year, part-time programme that focuses on the effective management of people and organisations. Students explore the economic, legal and HR issues that affect public administration broadly and obtain specialised knowledge about the management function, including financial management, marketing, and the management of information systems. Business Postgraduate Diploma/Master of Economic Science in Policy Analysis NFQ Level 9

Is this programme for you? This two-year, part-time programme addresses the need for the development of policy analysis skills in the wider public service. It includes subjects such as project management, economic and financial analysis, social policy analysis and cost-benefit analysis. After Year 1, students receive the interim award of Diploma in Policy Analysis. During the second year, they complete a supervised dissertation on an aspect of policy analysis of interest to them. Business Certificate for Accounting Technicians Duration: 2 Years NFQ Level 6 Is this programme for you? The Certificate for Accounting Technicians (First Year) offers a progression pathway into the Diploma for Accounting Technicians and can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. Once students successfully complete their subjects (listed below), they receive the Certificate for Accounting Technicians award.

Business Certified Payroll Technician (CPT) HETAC Level 6 Is this programme for you? Adult and Community Certificate in Adult and Community Education NFQ Level 8

Is this programme for you? This one-year course is designed to provide students with foundation skills in adult education. On completion of the course participants should: have a basic understanding of how adults learn; be able to apply theories and philosophies of Adult and Community Education in their teaching practice; be able to design, implement and evaluate adult learning programmes; adopt a flexible and creative approach to education. The aim of the programme is to provide students with the practical skills and a conceptual framework for working with adults in community education. Adult and Community Certificate in Community Development and Leadership NFQ Level 7

Is this programme for you? This one-year programme is designed to help students develop and enhance their leadership skills. Typical students on this course work in either paid or volunteer roles in the community sector. The programme offers four modules: Introduction to Community Development Studies Working with Groups Social Analysis for Community Studies Project planning for community development Participants must be 21 years or over and must be community activists preferably working in leadership roles. Students on this programme are typically working in various social care roles – care attendants, home helps, family carers and so on.
