AIMs

≠ Listening to the phone conversation between Brian and his girlfriend.

≠ To introduce students to the issue of privacy by exploring two contrasting images.

≠ Monitoring and making a list of all the TV programmes and DVDs watched by the family.

1 Using the metaphor of drawing curtains in the evening, ask the class to think about what it would be like to have people looking in all the time, with no way to curtail the constant surveillance? 2 Ask the students to examine the two contrasting scenes (exterior / interior) depicted on the page opposite. 3 Ask the students how they would feel if this was their house and a complete stranger could have access to all that goes on inside the house? If the stranger was actively…

note the following with your students: Burglars enter houses and take physical belongings or damage items. However intruding on someone’s privacy and becoming aware of their habits, monitoring their activities and listening to their conversations can be just as damaging in the long run.

Protecting your Privacy & controlling your Data

≠ Flicking through and making a copy of the electronically stored family albums. ≠ Copying passwords and usernames enabling access to the family’s bank account. ≠ Learning Sarah’s secret. ≠ Knowing exactly how much money is lying around in cash, unsecured, in the kitchen. 4 What do students find most worrying about the scenario? 5 Ask the students to compare the scenario with a physical break-in to a house.note

conclusions Q. What is privacy? a. The right to be left alone.

Mam is uploading family photos onto the Internet and afterwards plans to do some online banking.

As club treasurer of the local football club, Dad is counting money collected during a recent fundraiser.

Sarah, age 13 is whispering a secret to her big sister Lucy, 17. Sarah was accused of shoplifting but the charges were dropped. Sarah is still worried the shop will contact her parents.

Energy + CO2

CO2 + Climate Change 1

2

1

CO2, Carbon Dioxide, is a gas made up of carbon + oxygen.

2

A lot of human activity produces CO2.

3

CO2 is the main greenhouse gas.

4

Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere allow the heat of the sun in, but not out.

5

The greenhouse effect is causing a change in our climate.

6

Warmer temperatures could cause ice caps to melt, more storms, floods, droughts and more rainfall.

7

No one can predict for sure‌

1

2

7

1

Fossil fuels like coal, oil, gas, peat and petrol, were formed millions of years ago from the remains of plants and animals, all of which are made up of carbon.

2

We mine these fossil fuels from deep in the land and seabed where they have built up in layers over the years.

3

We burn the fossil fuels and use the energy released to produce electricity.

4

We also use coal, oil, gas, peat, and petrol everyday to provide heat and transport.

5

When we burn these fuels we release carbon which joins with oxygen making Carbon Dioxide – CO2.

6

Renewable sources of energy which do not produce CO2 are a good alternative to fossil fuels.
