PORT ANGELES — Steve Burke has a new hat to wear: Port of Port Angeles commissioner. Burke, part-time executive director of William Shore Memorial Pool and treasurer of the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce, was appointed to the position vacated by Jim Hallett at a special meeting Friday by Commissioners Colleen McAleer and Connie Beauvais.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Haggen store will be closed within two months, the Bellingham-based grocery chain has announced. Haggen Northwest Fresh said Friday that it is selling most of its other stores to Albertsons and closing others, including the store at 114 E. Lauridsen Blvd. Haggen will lay off all 67 employees of the Port Angeles store on May 10, it said in a document filed with the state. Haggen said store closures are expected to occur within the next

60 days, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal. Darrel Chard, manager of the Haggen grocery and pharmacy in Port Angeles, said employees were informed of the layoffs Friday. “All of this news is a big hurt,” said store employee Dave Logan, who also shoots photographs for the Peninsula Daily News. “It was hard to smile at work today because of this,” Logan said in an email. Earlier, Haggen had announced that the Port Angeles store was among its core stores that would be sold.

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Many Olympic National Park roads and campgrounds have been closed until an expected storm blows over. The National Weather Service forecasts a strong front coming into the North Olympic Peninsula today. It is expected to bring high winds and lowland rain and mountain snow through this evening. High winds and heavy rain can lead to such hazardous conditions as falling limbs and

trees, high surf and coastal flooding, said Barb Maynes, parks spokeswoman, in a news release. The closures are to ensure that visitors and employees are not injured or trapped by falling trees or branches, she said. Areas and facilities will remain closed through at least Monday morning, she added. Park staff will work to clean and repair areas so they can be reopened as soon as possible once the storm passes, Maynes said. TURN
