d-i-y remodeling tips
Do-it-yourself: The weekend warrior survival guide It’s the do-it-yourself dream: deciding on the perfect DIY project just as the weekend finally arrives. All the supplies have been purchased, and you’re ready to dive right in. However, the enthusiastic start of the project doesn’t always end in completion. “Knocking out a big home improvement or do-ityourself project in one weekend can be a rewarding task, but it is also challenging and can be taxing on your knees, feet and back when standing in the same position for several hours,” said Mark Clement, home improvement expert and co-host of the national radio show “MyFixitUpLife.” Whether you are woodworking at your workbench or staining a piece of furniture in the garage, Clement offers these tips to make the most of your DIY weekend projects while also feeling comfortable enough to successfully finish them: Focus on form and technique. When learning a new technique, go slowly, step by step, until you’ve mastered it. Allow your body to become accustomed to the various motions required. Moving efficiently is one
of the best ways to avoid injury. Stay hydrated. Make it a priority to drink at least 125 ounces of cold water each day. Staying hydrated is important when exerting DIY energy, especially when it is warm. So whether you’re digging up the garden, roofing the shed, or wrenching in a no-AC garage, keep a water bottle or sports drink close by. Create a comfortable workspace. Be conscious of how long you are standing in the same spot working on your project and how your back feels. To relieve pressure and soreness on feet, knees and back, use a durable mat that is engineered with an optimal balance of cushion and support. Dress appropriately. Flip-flops and sandals do not offer the balance, protection and support that a sturdy closed-toe shoe or work boot does while tackling home improvement projects. Even if you have the grace of a ballerina in the workshop or yard, it is remarkably easy to drop things on your feet, and it takes only a small distraction to create a big problem.

Know your limits. When you only have a weekend to finish a big project, you might be feeling the pressure. Before the project even starts, accept that it may not all go according to plan. Plan for a few different scenarios and remember that you can always ask for help. Have a first aid kit. Even if you are extremely cautious, accidents can happen, and it’s best to be prepared. Keep a first aid kit with all the essentials (antibiotic ointment, bandages, burn cream, etc.) near you at all times and seek professional medical help if necessary. — Story by Brandpoint

Create an ideal room by using colors that you feel connected to. Be inspired by colors that evoke your favorite pastimes — gardening, walking on the beach or taking part in your favorite pastimes.
Ways to connect to color through your passions
Peninsula Daily News/Sequim Gazette
Complete the look with accessories such as seashells and clear vases that evoke sea glass washed ashore. Pick colors fresh from the garden. Let the colors of your favorite flowers, fruits and vegetables guide your color choices throughout the home. Evoke beautiful pink flower petals on a bathroom accent wall; paint a desk in a fresh green; or bring out citrus colors in the kitchen with a lively orange. Make your kitchen the ideal gathering place with deliciously warm and inviting colors. Spice it up with rich, saturated tones of orange and plum. For room-to-room harmony, use a sage color in an adjoining dining room. Design around your collectibles. If you are an antiques aficionado, choose colors that celebrate the retro hipness of repurposed objects. Use color to add substance to kitchen cabinets. Give a mudroom an eclectic twist with Armagnac walls and a lime green bench. — Story provided by Brandpoint

Whether you love to sit on the beach or collect antiques, drawing from your personal passions can help you find the perfect colors to enhance your space. “If a hobby or activity lifts your mood, surround yourself with things that remind you of it,” said David Bromstad, an HGTV celebrity designer. “I always look to a homeowner’s passions when helping them decorate. And if you start with an established palette of coordinated colors, it’s easy to follow your instincts.” Bromstad recommends colors that evoke favorite pastimes, with colors that create room-to-room harmony throughout the home. He offers these tips for using color to express your passions. Head-for-the-beach colors. If you are inspired by the sea and sand, use maritime blues and dune grass greens to create a fresh, breezy feeling that beckons barefoot comfort. Create an indoor seaside retreat using rattan furniture, pale aqua walls and a table painted in another blue.

Home goods: Reduce, reuse and exchange Looking to clear some space in your home but can’t bear to see the materials buried in a landfill? Clallam County is home to 2good2toss.com, a local online exchange for building materials and large household items, which is sponsored by Clallam County and the city of Port Angeles. Items can be given away or sold for $99 or less. Registration for the exchange website is free. The site allows residents to reduce disposal costs and reduces the tons of waste shipped out of the county to a landfill. The exchange site was started in Washington in 2004 by the state Department of Ecology. Clallam County joined the effort in 2005. The website is paid for by a grant from Ecology, along with city solid waste funds, said Helen Freilich, the city’s waste reduction specialist. The site is hosted by iwastenotsystems.com, which hosts waste exchanges across North America. >>> CONTINUED on Page 7

According to the site, iwastenotsystems.com compiles the weight, type of waste, expenses and greenhouse gas emissions averted by keeping the waste out of the landfill. “People are really happy with it because items can go really fast,” Freilich said. According to a report provided by Freilich, the exchange site has grown exponentially since its launch in 2005. Within the first year, 2good2toss.com had 405 members within Clallam County. The site now has approximately 3,253 members. Though 10th in overall population of the 12 counties in Washington currently participating, the Clallam County/Port Angeles exchange is fourth in the number of current listings. “This gives people a chance to give items away without too much effort,” Freilich, said. Broken down by categories, the site is easy to navigate and find the items that you are looking for. Categories include everything from office furniture, computers/printers and electrical equipment to the more popular categories of sports, fitness and camping. You may search within the local exchange listings, or if you’re willing to travel, you can search within nearby counties’ listings. Most transactions are smooth and trouble free, but it is always best to follow safety precautions. Freilich recommends that site participants show the items they wish to exchange or sell in their
garages or outside their homes. “Or arrange to meet in a public place if you are not comfortable inviting someone to your home,” she said. “Make sure a family member or friend is nearby when you make an exchange.” If you want to keep your identity private throughout your exchange transaction, you may communicate with the seller or buyer directly through the 2good2toss.com website notification system rather than via your personal email or phone number. The exchange is limited to private use and is not open to businesses. Though the site allows for exchanges of a large number of items, it asks that you not sell foods, animals, weapons or hazardous materials. If you are looking to recycle an item but don’t know where to take the item to donate it, the site also is host to the Recyclopedia. This feature can be used to determine local options for recycling anything from lawn clippings and textbooks to unused medications. It gives people another option for recycling goods. The Recyclopedia is always being updated. If there are items that you would like to recycle but cannot find on the Recyclopedia list, you may phone Freilich at 360-417-4874. She can assist you in finding a location to recycle the item or add it to the list for future users to find. For more information, visit 2good2toss.com. — story and illustration by Katy SanGregory
Renovations for any age Most Americans over 50 want to stay in their home as they age, but few are making the renovations they need to ensure comfortable living for years to come. Consider some of the following functional, yet beautiful touches that help make a home safer and more comfortable for residents of all ages. Hardwood floors — Replacing carpet with hardwood floors can help accommodate difficulties ranging from respiratory problems to decreased mobility. New furniture — Changing out furniture can make a difference in the comfort and style of a home. Enhance maneuverability by allowing ample room between furnishings and by picking accessible pieces such as counter-height dining tables and chairs. Likewise, it’s easier to sit in and stand from firmer sofas and chairs than deeper, softer options. Kitchen updates — Kitchen shelves that pull out make utensils, pots and pans and ingredients much more accessible and do not require a kitchen remodel. Consider swapping out knobs for handles on cabinets and drawers to make them easier to use. More lighting — Make sure all areas of your property — inside and outside — are well lit. Pendant lamps, inset ceiling lights and track lighting help illuminate a room from above, preventing glare that can cause temporary blindness. Opt for switches to turn lights on and off, and locate them at the entrances of each room. — story provided by Brandpoint

your kitchen a whole new look. Focus on projects that will have maximum impact with minimal time invested. They include restoring existing tile work or installing a tile backsplash, switching out cabinet hardware or painting an accent wall or ceiling. Here are four simple kitchen improvements that you can do in a day or two: 1. Rejuvenate existing tile and grout — Old, stained tile and grout can make an entire surface appear dated and dingy, even if the tile itself is in good condition. Cleaning or recoloring grout can breathe new life into existing tile work, whether it’s countertops, flooring or a backsplash. Tile cleaners and sealants can help remove stains and brighten surfaces without damaging grout. If your grout is in good shape, but you’re just tired of the off-white or gray color, try updating it with a grout colorant. 2. Create a trendy tile backsplash — You can tile without hiring a professional. If you’re a do-ityourselfer with the right tools and a little bit of know how, you can easily add a tile backsplash featuring colorful glass or metallic tiles for that designer look in the kitchen. “Adding a backsplash with decorative tiles creates a new focal point and at the same time brings in a fresh accent color to the kitchen,” said independent interior designer Ann Borsheim. “Follow through with additional touches and inexpensive accessories such as towels, a new curtain or

decorative glass jars to complete the transformation.” Tile-setting mats make it easy to install tile — on a backsplash, countertop or shower wall. Because the mat’s double stick adhesive sheets eliminate the need to apply mortar, so you can work at your own pace. Start with a smooth surface — you can even tile over existing tile surfaces — and place the mat in position, cut as needed with scissors or a utility knife, press the tiles of your choice in place and grout immediately using a pre-mixed or single-component grout product.

3. Replace dated hardware — Cabinet replacement can be costly and time-consuming — and best left to professionals. But you can easily and quickly give your cabinets a whole new look by replacing outdated hardware. If your cabinets are still builder-bare of knobs, handles or pulls, adding them not only can make them look fresh, it can make them much easier to use. It’s easy to find hardware to suit virtually any design theme or taste, with many home improvement stores carrying a wide range of designer styles from sleek, modern metallics to Victorian-inspired glass. 4. Get creative with paint — Painting is one of the most powerful and costeffective ways to re-create the look of a room, but painting the entire space can be time-consuming. If you’re not up for a full day of painting four walls and all that trim, consider painting one wall in an eye-catching accent color. Or, for something really different — albeit a bit more work — paint the ceiling in a hue that complements the current wall color. No design rule says your kitchen ceiling must be plain white, so spice it up with a color that speaks to you. Updating your kitchen is a rewarding home-improvement job, and can enhance the its appearance and your enjoyment of it, as well as boost your home’s value. In fact, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report, even a minor kitchen renovation will return more than 75 percent of its cost when you sell your home. — story by Brandpoint

How to hide the TV when it’s not in use People have a love affair with their electronics, which play an integral role in households across the globe. Statistics from Nielsen’s Television Audience Report indicate that the average American household has 2.86 television sets, despite having just 2.5 people. It also is estimated that those in the U.S. will have watched the equivalent of nine years’ worth of TV by the age of 65. Canadians spend 1,500 hours each year watching TV, and 128,000 Canadians have a TV in the bathroom. Although television sets are located throughout a typical household, homeowners don’t always appreciate the look of a TV and how it fits in with their design scheme. That is why many seek ways to camouflage it when it is not in use. There are many ways to mask television. Homeowners can explore different options, depending on their budget and available space. n Furniture: Television armoires and cabinetry are some of the most basic ways to hide a TV. The unit can be housed behind doors that are closed when the TV is not on and can be opened and recessed when it’s time to watch a show. These pieces of furniture can match other items in the room and create a flawless appeal. >>> CONTINUED on Page 11

n Cover up: Wall-hung flat-screen televisions can be camouflaged with a piece of artwork or another wall decoration. Many times the TV is recessed into the wall, and a canvas or mirror is mounted on a device that can move it out of the way to reveal the screen. n On the move: Mechanisms can lower or raise a TV from a hidden location, whether in the floor or ceiling. The TV can descend or ascend vertically, or a hinged device can flip the TV up or down, depending on need, much like a small LCD television that mounts on the underside of a kitchen cabinet. n Under the bed: People have long embraced the under-the-bed storage options, but what about using that space for a TV? Homeowners who have $10,000 lying around can purchase a mounting device that stores the TV under the bed and then raises it into position at the foot of the bed with the touch of a remote control device. n Track TV: With a system of trackwork, a television can swivel out of a hiding spot in a closet, cabinet or soffit and move into position on a pole connected to the track. Both manual and motorized tracks can be installed for a few hundred dollars. n Canvas cover: A less expensive option than some of the motorized devices available, a shade or tapestry on a manual device (think the window shades that you tug and the shade rolls up onto itself) also can conceal a television. Lower or raise the shade as needed. n Smaller scale: Smaller TVs are easier to camouflage. Think scale when placing a TV in a bedroom, bathroom or kitchen. Simple decor accessories may do the trick of hiding the TV from view. Although most people can’t get enough of their television viewing, the caveat is they don’t want the television to be an eyesore when not in use. Try one of these “hiding” strategies to help mask a TV when it is not in use. — story by Metro Creative Graphics

fit for a
cook photos by Pam Schoonover-Russell
A beach house along Oak Bay Road in Port Ludlow is the ideal setting for homeowners Nancy and Darold Hefely to entertain family and friends. But the small and out-of-date kitchen needed a little help to become a place fit for a cook. A recent kitchen remodel allows Nancy to pursue her love of cooking and test plenty of recipes for her upcoming cookbook. “One of the goals was to increase the kitchen size to accommodate frequent visits by guests and family, which includes over two dozen grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren who always end up in the kitchen,” explained Trisa Chomica of Trisa & Co. Interior Design in Port Angeles. “We were able to increase the size of the kitchen by eliminating a small powder room and pantry. We gained cabinet and storage space by extending the cabinets to the ceiling.” Adding a library ladder allows the Hefelys to reach the top cabinets in style. To lighten the feel of the high cabinets, Chomica added smaller upper cabinets with back-lit glass fronts. “The Hefelys are now able to display beautiful collected objects and have soothing ambient lighting for the evenings,” Chomica said. The result of the remodel is pure magic to the Hefelys. The family now has a spacious yet cozy place to entertain, and Nancy finally has the test kitchen she needs to more easily complete her cookbook.
UPDATING THE ISLAND
The kitchen’s island was preserved during the remodel but was
updated to meet the family’s needs. The island was enhanced with a fresh coat of paint in a contrasting color, and custom-built chunky legs were affixed to replace smaller, more traditional legs. In addition, a granite countertop was added for function and beauty. A fun yet functional library ladder allows the homeowners to access upper cabinets. 12 September 2013

MIRROR, MIRROR...
A limited number of tasteful accessories, including a large, round mirror over the fireplace, completes the updated look of this Port Ludlow beach house. A goal of the remodel was to create a warm and cozy place for the homeowners’ friends and family to gather.
SWEET GRAPES
A specialty wine niche was created next to the fireplace by adding reflective round metal tiles bordering a decorative pewter urn spilling over with grapes. The niche contrasts from the traditional subway tile backsplash used in the rest of the kitchen. Upper glass cabinets provide a beautiful way to display wineglasses. Daily News/Sequim Gazette

Seating options in and adjacent to the kitchen were a must for this beach house where large groups of people frequently gather. Colorful chair cushions and an oversized rug welcome visitors to the large table for a meal served by soon-to-be cookbook author Nancy Hefely.
COUNTER INTUITIVE
Interior designer Trisa Chomica used two types of countertops to create this look. The island is topped with granite to create a focal point and the perimeter counters in a neutral colored quartz product to create an attractive contrasting look.

Ideas to get your home guest ready The holiday season is just around the corner. With the kids home on winter breaks, and family and friends anxious to visit, you can expect the stress of getting your home ready to be in full swing. Here are a few helpful tips that will make you a successful host and give your guests a warm welcome: Create a comfort zone — No matter what size the room, the one thing you can never compromise on is comfort. A few hospitable touches will make it feel welcoming to your guests. Make sure you’re stocked with the essentials — clean sheets and a choice of firm or fluffy pillows — then add a few extras like bottled water and specialty chocolates to take it to the next level. For a final touch, display any photographs you may have of you and your guests to bring back fun memories. Remember that bathroom comfort is just as important as the bedroom. In addition to providing any toiletries guests may need, make sure they have plenty of fresh towels. Try following the three-towel rule: Leave one large towel for showering, one hand towel and a washcloth in the guest room for each person. If visitors will be sharing a bathroom with other members of your family, be sure to properly plan for the morning rush so guests don’t feel as if they are intruding on your daily routines. Freshen up — Take the time to make sure your home is ready for visitors and conduct a thorough pre-cleaning. Pay special attention to the kitchen, entryways, bathrooms and other high-traffic areas to ensure you can spend more time playing hostess, rather than housekeeper. By taking the time to plan and prepare, you’ll make the visit with family and friends special, not just for them but for everyone. With a few extra steps, you will lessen the stress and welcome the good times. — story by Brandpoint

big, yet simple changes
Dress up your home with a creative interior door remodel Hanging a new door can add significant aesthetic appeal with minimal investment. With a bit of remodeling savvy and a modest budget, it’s possible to change your home to be more in tune with personal style. Although many homeowners gravitate toward new paint colors or furnishings to revamp the look of different rooms in the home, replacing tired-looking doors is another affordable option. Switching out doors can be a high-impact project for little cost.

“Working people to create “Working withwith people to create beautiful homes environments.” beautiful homes andand environments.”
Think about the room in the house where the door(s) add little appeal. Perhaps a bathroom door has been marred with holes from a former towel rack. A bedroom with simple, flat doors may lack panache. Some doors may have been warped by moisture or damaged. These eyesores can be replaced. A trip to the hardware or home improvement store can yield a number of options. Hollow core doors are typically more affordable than solid wood doors. If cost is a factor, select among the various styles in hollow designs. Switching out a door can be a challenging endeavor and often is easiest as a two-person job. Some people simply use the old door as a template for the new door. Remember, not all doors are the same size (width and height) as the existing door opening. Therefore, some cutting and fitting may be necessary. Here are some steps to follow: 1. Measure the width and height of the old door. Many doors are a standard width of 1 3/8 inches, although older doors may be different in width. 2. Doors are sold as pre-hung doors or door blanks. Pre-hung ones are surrounded by a jamb. When using these doors, measure accordingly taking the jamb under consideration. Blanks are simply the door with no holes for hinges or locksets already included. 3. Remove the old door by taking out the hinge pins, starting from the bottom and working up. You may need a screwdriver and a hammer to tap out stubborn pins. Keep the pins in a safe spot. 4. Lay the old door on top of the new door and trace the dimensions for cutting. Be sure to line up the lockset edge so things will line up. >>> CONTINUED on Page 17

Hanging an interior door can add a lot of aesthetic appeal with very little investment. Follow the steps below to update a room in your home today.
There should be 1/8 inch clearance on the sides of the door and 5/8 inch clearance on the bottom. 5. Use a circular saw to cut the door accurately. If only a little needs to be removed from the door, consider using a hand plane instead. If you need to remove more than 1 inch, take half off the bottom and top of the door so it will be even. 6. Place the old door back on top of the new. Mark the location of the hinge mortices (the recessed area and holes where the hinges will fit) with a utility knife and straight edge. 7. Lightly chisel out the hinge mortices so that they are the right thickness to house the hinge hardware. Test the hinge in the mortice. 8. Test the door’s fit within the opening to ensure all cuts are accurate. Plane areas if anything is off or if the door rubs. 9. Mark and drill the space for the lockset and doorknob. Test the fit. 10. Attach the new door and interlace the hinges. Have a helper put in the hinge pins. 11. Put in the knob and be sure the entire set up works correctly. 12. Enjoy the new door. — story by Metro Creative Graphics

long-haul remodeling
Making your own space work for you As more people choose to stay in their current homes longer, Americans are diving into larger and more long-term remodel projects. Forty percent of homeowners plan to remodel or build an addition to their existing home within the next two years, with kitchen and bathroom projects remaining the most popular remodeling jobs, according to the 2013 Houzz and Home Survey. Home remodeling for the long term can be challenging, as newer designs may clash with the existing style of the home. The key to a successful remodel is to choose elements that create a cohesive design throughout, yet remain fashionable and functional well into the future. Here are a few tips to help make your remodel work for the long haul: >>> CONTINUED on Page 21

Keep your space flexible with neutral color choices As homeowners stay in one place longer, they are passing on bright, bold colors, especially in the kitchen, and instead are choosing neutral colors and clean styles that work with a variety of design elements. Many earthy, neutral color palettes provide visual warmth while seamlessly blending with the rest of a house. Moreover, neutral hues can increase dramatic impact when carried throughout the kitchen in various textures, such as flooring, a backsplash or cabinets. Give your kitchen a warm, cozy feel with soft browns or create a trendy, elegant feel with blacks and grays in your cabinetry.
Complement existing design elements with transitional styles Modern cabinets can clash with traditional elements in rooms, especially when remodeling older homes. Choose cabinets with design elements that easily transition across differing styles and bridge the gap between your desire for a contemporary kitchen and the traditional reality of an older home. Cabinetry manufacturers are offering many new styles that help create flow between old and new spaces within your home. Simple cabinet doors can adopt a contemporary feel in a kitchen or complement a traditional style in the bathroom, all while maintaining a continuous, polished look across your home.
Create a functional, organized space Functionality is essential to a kitchen or bath

How to control air leakage and energy loss in your home first, such as in the attic and around electrical holes, plumbing vents, basement rim joists (where the foundation meets the wood framing), recessed lighting, windows and doors.
Keeping your home at a comfortable temperature becomes an increasingly expensive proposition with steadily rising energy costs. With the promise of winter upon us, you can keep air leakage and energy loss in check with a mini energy audit of your home that includes these three quick steps:
No. 2 — Check your insulation
If you have conventional fiberglass or cellulose insulation, settling and sagging can compromise its No. 1 — Check for drafts performance and lead to a big hit on your energy Air leakage (especially in the basement, on the main bills. Look for gaps and signs of moisture problems in floor or through a windward-facing wall) can make your home drafty, uncomfortable and difficult to heat, your insulation, especially in the attic, in the basement and in the room over the garage. no matter how much you turn up the thermostat. If you’re planning home improvements or an Address air leakage by plugging the biggest leaks
addition, consider installing an insulation/air barrier (like innovative Icynene) for complete air sealing and energy savings of up to 50 percent over conventional insulation. More information about your insulation options is available online at icynene.com.
No. 3 — Check your furnace How old is your furnace? If it predates 1992, it might only operate at about 55 to 78 percent efficiency. A new Energy Star-qualified furnace can operate above 90 percent efficiency as a result of more efficient heat exchangers and electronic ignition. — by Metro Creative Graphics
