Racers set sail for Ketchikan BY CHRIS MCDANIEL PENINSULA DAILY NEWS
VICTORIA — The three-member crew of the Alula may not have use of their legs, but they are accomplished seamen who say their dogged determination is all that is required to see them through the end of this year’s Race to Alaska. “We are not a novelty act at all,” said Capt. Spike Kane, 53, of Seattle. “We are accomplished sailors. I have a long history of sailing before I was in a wheelchair. “I figured out a boat that works well for me, that is a contender, and we came to the table just as everybody else.” The crew of paraplegics is one of 55 teams that successfully made Thursday’s 40-mile trip from Port Townsend to Victoria, the qualifying leg of the competition. George Vrable, a Republican from Port Ludlow seeking a 24th District seat in the state House of Representatives, said he would need to ask advice before considering participating in candidate forums organized by the League of Women Voters, which he has described as hostile and left-wing. “I’ll think on that and ask for some advice on that,” the retired firefighter said Thursday. “Give me a few days.” League of Women Voters forums in Clallam and Jefferson counties for the Position 1 seat from the 24th District have been canceled due to a lack of participation from the candidates. The 24th District covers Clallam and Jefferson counties and part of Grays Harbor County.
Both forums The only candidate who agreed to participate in both forums is Clallam County Commissioner Mike Chapman, who filed as a Democrat for the seat vacated by Kevin Van De Wege, D-Sequim, who is running for state Senate. None of the proposed dates for the forums worked for Vrable or candidate Tammy Ramsay of Hoquiam, who filed as a Democrat, organizers said. But that isn’t what Vrable saidat the Port Angeles Business Association forum Tuesday. It was the first forum that more than one candidate agreed to attend. Ramsay was absent. “I wouldn’t mind going to speak to the League of Women Voters if they were not — I feel — hostile and a very left-wing organization,” Vrable said during the PABA forum Tuesday.
