You can purchase two types of Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts (JFFA) tickets: An all-festival pass, which gets you into all four days of the festival and is your best deal, or a daily ticket. Tickets also can be purchased at any JFFA ticket venue during the festival. Children 12 and younger always receive free admission. Tickets are half price with a valid student ID. (Only available at Port Book and News, 104 E. First St. in Port Angeles, Joyful Noise Music Center, 112 W. Washington St. in Sequim and at the festival gate from May 27-30.)

Festival offers something for everyone LIVE ART Ladies and gentlemen, it’s an imagination celebration as you watch talented artists create exciting new artistic works while being inspired by the powerful music emanating from the stage. Participating North Olympic Peninsula-based artists include Jeff Tocher, Mike Pace, Lynne Roberson, John Rickenbacher, Doug Parent, Sarah Tucker, Jeanette Painter and Craig Dills. THE TURTLE THEATER Children’s entertainer Alleyoop, also known as Al Hirsch, will perform stories, songs and puppet shows for children and family audiences inside The Turtle Tent, located on the lawn outside the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St. Hirsch is a two-time winner of the Parent’s Choice Award. Four free shows will be offered Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29 at The Turtle Tent. Show times are scheduled for noon, 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. JOIN IN THE FUN AT THE WORKSHOP ROOM IN VERN BURTON COMMUNITY CENTER Join fellow festival-goers in a juicy, uplifting and centering flow yoga class led by yoga instructor Amelia Andaleon at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 28, and Sunday,
May 29 at the Vern Burton Community Center. Open to people of all fitness levels. Children are welcome to attend sessions with a parent or guardian. A yoga mat is suggested but not required. u “Limber for Lemurs” will explore the wonders of lemurs through movement, storytelling and play. Bring your child or children or your inner child to get moving like these amazing and endangered primates that live only in Madagascar. Sessions will be offered at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29 at the Vern Burton Community Center. u Cast a fishing rod over a makeshift “fishing wall” and catch a piece of debris gathered from area beaches by Coastsavers and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) volunteers. A piece of cord to turn the debris into a one-of-a-kind necklace will be provided. Cost is $1 per turn. Great fun for children ages 5 to 12. Offered from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 28, Sunday, May 29, and Monday, May 30, within the Vern Burton Community Center.

MEMORIAL DAY RECOGNITION Betsy Reed Schultz will reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day and talk about Captain Joseph House on Monday at noon on the Main Stage. The Captain Joseph House Foundation is renovating founder Schultz’s former bed and breakfast, The Tudor Inn, into a Port Angeles getaway for grieving family members of service members who died in combat.

HENRIK BOTHE Get ready to laugh with the physical comedy of Henrik Bothe. The Danish-born Bothe has performed in four languages, 50 states and 22 countries since 1984. He walks on ladders, spins ropes, juggles without using his hands, rides a too-high unicycle, walks with four legs and can even appear as a glowing alien — NeonMan. Bothe’s appeared on “The Tonight Show,” at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, at Europe’s prestigious “Le Plus Grande Cabaret du Monde” and even on “A Prairie Home Companion” where host Garrison Keillor exclaimed, “Henrik is one of the few jugglers that have succeeded in performing on the radio.” SATURDAY
COMPASSION GORILLA This Canadian world beat powerhouse will liberate feet and catapult audiences into a dance entrancement. Infused with elements of Latin, African and Balkan music, Compassion Gorilla combines tight, eclectic instrumental arrangements with songs and storytelling. The result is a high-energy show that enwraps audiences in a spell of dance, magic and melody with racy horn lines, brazen guitar harmonies, driving handpercussion rhythms and full-bodied vocal harmonies. SCOTT COOK A roots balladeer with a rare personal warmth, Canada’s Scott Cook has managed to distill the stories collected over a decade of near-incessant touring across Canada, the USA, Europe, Asia and Australia into straight-talking, keenly observant verse. Road-worn, painfully honest and deeply human, his tunes weave folk, roots, blues, soul and country with spacious fingerstyle guitar and claw hammer banjo arrangements. Cook is one of the hardest-working troubadours on the road averaging 160 gigs and 10 festivals a year. PAUL CHASMAN Guitar virtuoso Paul Chasman has had a remarkable 50-year-career melding jazz, classical and folk idioms into his own unique style. He developed a system for harmonics on the guitar — cascading bell-like tones — which he utilized throughout entire pieces in ways that had never been done before. “Guitar Player” magazine called him “one of the most deft harmonics practitioners,” and called his harmonics technique “simply astounding.” In recent years, however, surgery on his left hand necessitated a whole new musical approach. Chasman became reincarnated as a singer/songwriter. Accompanied by the Great Gatleys, his newest incarnation highlights his talent for vivid poetry, inspired guitar playing and biting satire. SUNDAY
KATHRYN CLAIRE Kathryn Claire exhibits a charisma and grace on stage which is matched only by her truly unique voice and rare ability to move seamlessly across genres. Claire has spent years cultivating her style and approach to music as a violinist, guitar player, singer and songwriter. Fundamentals from her classical and traditional music background combined with an innate ability to improvise has made her a favorite at venues, festivals and institutions around the world. COUSIN HARLEY Cousin Harley is the rocking hillbilly persona of Canadian guitar virtuoso Paul Pigat. This rollicking band from Vancouver, B.C. puts it all together including classic western swing, hotrod country, surf, psychobilly, lounge and West Coast jump blues. Called the “Motorhead of rockabilly” by a delirious fan after a particularly raucous show in Holland, there’s nothing tentative about Cousin Harley’s pedal-to-themetal approach to their music. Pigat is well known in the music world and he has backed countless folks from Jakob Dylan to Neko Case. However, Cousin Harley has been Pigat’s pet project for 12 or 13 years, and judging from the hordes of people who drove or flew hundreds of miles to attend shows on his last European jaunt, everything’s working out just fine. SUNDAY, AFTER HOURS DEAD PEASANT SOCIETY Dead Peasant Society is very big on vocal harmonies and many of their songs tell stories. There’s a good bit of humor in the songs in general and the band loves to have a good time on stage. Dead Peasant Society plays folk/traditional tunes as well as bluegrass, ragtime, a little jazz and many more of the band’s original songs. The band travels about the country in hobo fashion, but they are currently based around Port Angeles. MONDAY DELHI 2 DUBLIN The Delhi 2 Dublin sound started as an electronic fusion between bhangra beats and Celtic fiddle and has since grown into anything from dub reggae to breakbeats to just straight up happy dance music. The word has spread about the band’s energetic live shows and these road-warriors have been touring constantly since — mesmerizing crowds at many of the top festivals across Canada and the U.S., blowing people away in the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany and Malaysia as well as performing to awe-filled audiences in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Dubai. SUNDAY ROSS DOUGLAS Canadian Ross Douglas has had a truly amazing and diverse musical career. With traces of rock, folk, blues, country, jazz and more, music is familiar but always new. MONDAY KARLYN LANGJAHR A family-friendly class, “Limber for Lemurs” will explore the wonders of lemurs through movement, storytelling and play. Learn about different lemur species and their unique adaptations, characteristics and habitats. Langjahr is a local marine conservationist and yoga instructor who raises funds for lemur conservation projects in northeastern Madagascar. Held in the Vern Burton Community Center’s Workshop Room. SATURDAY, SUNDAY LEROY BELL AND HIS ONLY FRIENDS A huge fan favorite at last year’s festival, LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends are back at the Juan de Fuca Festival for an encore performance. A top-eight finalist on “The X-Factor,” Bell’s smooth pop-soul melodies and hard-rocking beat have built him a solid loyal following all over the world. As a successful young songwriter, Bell wrote songs for The Spinners, The O’Jays, The Temptations, Jennifer Lopez, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Rita Marley, Elton John and many others. With his band, His Only Friends, Bell showcases his remarkable talent as a passionate soul/rhythm and blues singer, a powerful blues/rocker and even an acoustic folk/soul singer. LOS PINGUOS Los Pinguos came to the United States from Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a mixture of Latin rhythms, reggae, rumba, flamenco and rock. Shortly thereafter, the band’s career took a big leap forward when they were awarded the grand prize on Ed McMahon’s, “The Next Big Star” television show. Since then, Los Pinguos has performed worldwide in such places as India, Bali, Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival, Italy, the Netherlands, Puerto Rica and Canada. Los Pinguos will be performing three shows for area students at Port Angeles High School. (Sponsored by the Washington State Arts Commission). SATURDAY, AFTER HOURS NICK DRUMMOND BAND Nick Drummond’s remarkable musical career continues to astonish. He is a veteran of both the legendary Seattle acoustic rock band The Senate, and also Juan de Fuca Festival favorite Impossible Bird. Utterly unique, Drummond’s distinct sound includes elements of Afro-pop, funk and country welded to the heavy backbeat of hard rock. His approach to guitar playing has been compared to Dave Matthews, but his clear vocals are entirely his own. SATURDAY OLYMPIC EXPRESS BIG BAND The 17-plus-piece Olympic Express Big Band was formed in the spring of 2008 to fulfill the vision of a few local area musicians. These musicians wanted to gather the finest players on the North Olympic Peninsula to create a high-caliber, “take-no-prisoners” musical ensemble that would perform tough, challenging arrangements. Today, the band’s reputation is well established as a talented, high-quality dance band that recreates the excitement of the golden age of the big bands and can keep the dance floor busy all night. The band’s repertoire includes classic hits, whether big band swing, standards, Dixieland, rock and roll, jazz, Motown or boogie woogie. SATURDAY, SUNDAY

THE SOJOURNERS Thanks to their formative years spent singing in the churches, Marcus Mosely of Ralls, Texas, Will Sanders of Alexandria, La., and Khari McClelland of Detroit, give The Sojourners’ sound an authentic edge that only comes with experience. The band’s fourth album, “Moonlit Toasters,” was released recently and marks a new stage of style and creativity for the band. SUNDAY, AFTER HOURS TURTLE THEATER The Turtle Theater is returning to the Juan de Fuca Festival. Children’s entertainer Alleyoop, also known as Al Hirsch, will perform stories, songs and puppet shows for children and family audiences inside The Turtle Tent. Hirsch is an author, historian, poet, riddler, folklorist, puppeteer, musician and more. In fact, he knows more songs, stories and riddles than anybody else his size or shape. He has at least one story or song for every occasion. He has more whistles than you can shake a stick at. Children of all ages love his “Lumberjack” routine. He often uses puppets with younger children including Billy Bear — the silly bear. Hirsch is a two-time winner of the Parent’s Choice LINDA WATERFALL Awards. Four shows daily will be performed at the Turtle Tent located outside the Vern Burton Community Center. SATURDAY, SUNDAY melodic, percussion and vocals. MONDAY TWISTED ROOTS Marty Kaler and Bob Lawrence-Markarian first played together more than 35 years ago. After their paths diverged for a few years, they reunited and found that the magic was still there. Developing their own style, Twisted Roots plays old and new tunes, featuring finger-style guitar, ukulele, banjo, Dobro, lap-steel guitar and humor. The band expanded to include Leo Bidne on vocals, bass and guitar and Marilyn Kaler on harmonica,
LINDA WATERFALL Linda Waterfall has been named “Seattle’s Top SingerSongwriter” by the Seattle Times, Seattle Weekly and the KZAM arts and entertainment poll. Waterfall grew up in a musical family, with early training in classical piano, music theory, composition and voice. Her songs reflect classical training and popular influences including folk, jazz, blues, rock and world music. An accomplished guitarist and pianist, Waterfall taught songwriting for 15 years through the Washington State Arts Commission, and was a songwriting instructor at Cornish College of the Arts from 2005 to 2012. WEST COAST WOMEN’S BLUES REVUE The West Coast Women’s Blues Revue is a showcase of firepower talent from four of the best in the business.
