ichard Everist was a Hastings football legend and businessman, and his passing on 14 January, at age 81, left a scar not only on his family, but the entire town of Hastings. You see, so intrinsic was Richard to the town and its business, sporting and social fabric, that he referred to himself as the ‘King of Hastings’. Nobody disagreed. It was a bitter-sweet time for Richard’s daughter, Katherine Henderson.

Only four days after the death of her father, she welcomed her new baby, Evie, into the world. While in hospital, family friend Brad dropped over to help look after Katherine and husband Marty’s other daughter, Ruby, and got chatting to Marty. Brad had some shares in the ownership of a horse to sell. A small, brown gelding. Would Marty like to participate? Marty put a proposal to Brad. He’d buy ten percent of the horse on one condition; they named the horse ‘King of Hastings’. Brad agreed.

I know dad would be really proud and overjoyed at the success of his namesake Marty did have a complication. The negotiation and subsequent purchase was done without consultation with his wife. A sticky situation to say the least. In fact, it wasn’t until May, only 48 hours before ‘King of Hastings’ first race, that Marty confessed to wife Katherine. “Obviously I was pleased that the horse honoured my father” said Katherine. “But I wasn’t that excited about the prospects of owning a racehorse that I had no say in buying”. But if history had any say in it, a horse named in honour of Richard Everist would be a sure winner. Let’s go back to 1955. Just before the start of the football season, when a rather shy, well-built and ruggedly handsome seventeenyear-old appeared at training and in a rather tentative manner stated that he would like to play for Hastings. His eagerness so impressed the officials that he was selected in the senior team for the opening round. He went on to play 282 games for the Hastings Football Club during which time he was never omitted from the senior team. Richard won five best-and-fairest and coached the senior side on eight different occasions over a fourteen-year period. In the twilight of his career Richard was able to achieve the ultimate goal when he coached Hastings to a premiership in 1972. Richard Everist was named as captain of Hastings’ ‘Team of the Century’, awarded life membership, and in 2016 was named as a Legend of the club. Furthermore, he played a significant role in the establishment of the Hastings Cricket and Football Social Club. Football wasn’t his only forte. Richard was also involved in cricket, golf, swimming and surf-lifesaving. Richard went on to open Everist Timber in 1982; a business that was, and still is, intrinsic to the town of Hastings. He was involved in Hastings at such a deep level that he decided to refer to himself as the ‘King of Hastings’. Rural life was a large part of Richard’s ethos. Indeed, as a child he would ride his pony to school. As he grew up, and became a boarder at Melbourne Grammar, he would enjoy riding when he returned home to Tyabb. He even participated in show jumping events at the Royal Melbourne Show. Later, Richard would take Katherine to the races in Balnarring, or Moruya while on family holidays to the southern coast of New South Wales. But it wasn’t until Katherine entered the racing industry that their common interest would come to the fore. “It was something we shared together, and we spent a lot of time talking about horses and the racing industry when we were together,” said Katherine. “We bought into our first racehorse together in around 2013 We actually owned two, but they were both pretty slow. We never had a win with either of them.” continued next page...

“But dad really enjoyed the torrid tales of racing; the inside stories. It really was part of his nature to learn as much as possible on whatever subject he was taking an interest”. With the news still fresh that she was part owner of ‘King of Hastings’ the gutsy steed debuted as a winner at Cranbourne. Luckily for Marty. Now with five races under his belt, ‘King of Hastings’ is the talk of the racing world, with two wins and three second places. The little gelding with a big heart has racked up $211,000 in prize money, making it a very savvy investment for Marty. “It has been a really exciting journey so far, and we have only just begun,” said Katherine. ‘King of Hastings’ is now being rested with plans to prepare him to run in the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast in January; a race worth two million dollars. “It is obviously great to have a winning horse. But through ‘King’ we reflect on dad. It is a way to remember him and celebrate him”. “And I know dad would be really proud and overjoyed at the success of his namesake!” Richard heading for school in Tyabb

n 11th November Australians come together to remember the armed forces who have died in the line of duty, but for Rebecca Tyler, 11th November is a day she’d rather forget. Rebecca grieves for the loss of her twin sister, Elizabeth (Beth), who took her own life on this day in 2013. “She was my best friend for 38 years. She was the other half of me. My family within a family. It’s been a difficult journey trying to label exactly who I am as someone other than Beth’s twin. She was my soulmate and the person that gave me the privilege of using the title of twin. Beth can live on in my heart now.”

November 2019
Having never been exposed to suicide directly or indirectly, Rebecca and her family were not familiar with strategies for coping or sifting through mental illness, and it’s been a very big learning experience. Like many other people in the aftermath of suicide, Rebecca recalls, “We knew that Beth had been depressed and was going through quite a bit, but we never could have imagined that she would take her life.” The journey has been difficult on her family and friends and has practically torn the family apart. “Suicide is now something that’s a part of me and I will live with it for the rest of my life. It is not something you get over, but rather, you learn to live your life around.” “Beth had a heart of gold and the most beautiful smile. She always wanted to make people happy and, in the end, perhaps it was too much. She hid her pain well.” Too many Australians find themselves in this same situation. The most recent Australian data (ABS, Causes of Death, 2015) reports deaths due to suicide in 2015 at 3,027. This equates to more than eight deaths by suicide in Australia each day. For every death by suicide, it is estimated that as many as 30 people attempt to end their lives. That is approximately 65,300 suicide attempts each year. After spending over a year in one-on-one counselling, Rebecca found the support group, ‘Support After Suicide’(SAS), delivered by the Jesuit Support Services, and travelled to Richmond for two years. SAS were then able to form a group in Frankston which
she has been going to on the first Thursday of each month ever since. Rebecca says the group has become her family and she feels blessed to have found them. Moving through her journey of intense grief, Rebecca now feels she has progressed and is ready to help other newly bereaved people. “I have moved on, though the daily battle will never leave me and will always be a part of me.” Her aim is to give people hope that life continues and promise that there is love and support around the corner for everyone. Rebecca not only attends the ‘Support After Suicide’ group, she has also immersed herself into the organisation ‘Chasing Change-Frankston & Mornington Peninsula Suicide Prevention Network’. Chasing Change is a grass-roots community initiative with the goal of creating change to prevent suicide through community conversation and collaboration. For years, people have not wanted to talk about mental health, depression and suicide. Society is finally adapting, and people are now feeling that it’s easier to talk about these once taboo topics. By talking about them, the lines of communication open for those that have been afraid or embarrassed to discuss personal and family problems in the past. Rebecca reassures us that everyone has something going on and a story to tell; No matter what the narrative is, allowing it to be told is vital. continued next page...

We should be listening more. Really listening, and reaching out just to say are you ok?
Just hours before Beth took her life, the twins had their last phone conversation which lasted over an hour and a half. “She felt that everyone had let her down, and maybe we had. I remember telling her to hang on and that tomorrow would be a new day. I often wonder that if we had done more for Beth, might she still be here?” Chasing Change held their third annual World Suicide Prevention Day Walk this past September. The walk was held in collaboration with Mornington Peninsula Shire Youth Services, It’s Okay Not To Be Okay, Free Hearts, HALT and SEMPHN.
“The aim was to create a positive, safe, and welcoming event in which people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences can come together to acknowledge the impact suicide has on many people’s lives,” said, Rebecca. She added; “This is a small step in

a long process of bringing communities together to collectively work towards reducing suicide and increase people’s awareness of positive mental health.”
“We live in these great small neighbourhoods where we run into familiar faces at the supermarket and the petrol station. We smile and say hello. magine a job where you get to set off fireworks for a living. It sounds like every kid’s dream gig, but for Balnarring’s Rusty Johnson, it is his livelihood.
When Rusty was working as a secondary school teacher, he got involved in the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge with his school. The performance required a bit of pyrotechnics, and it was there that Rusty discovered his new passion. “I was approached by Howard & Sons Pyrotechnics,” said Rusty. “The Sydney-based company was looking to branch out into other states, and they wanted me to come on board.”

Having originally come from a fine arts background, this business offered Rusty a unique opportunity; “Instead of painting on a canvas, I can paint in the sky,” said Rusty, who’s been with the company for about 15 years now.
sales of fireworks, began a new focus as a display-only team. The company has since built their reputation not only on their displays, but on their results competing in international fireworks competitions.
In the early days of Howard & Sons, momentum came from fireworks displays at the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and the bi-centenary celebrations of the first settlement at Sydney Cove. But things did not go to plan as the sale of fireworks was banned in Australia in the late 1970s and the company, which had depended on retail and wholesale
Competitive fireworks competitions allow fireworks companies from across the world to show their skills. “We came second in Montreal in 2019, and we won the Da Nang competition in Vietnam in 2015. a 20 – 30 minute show. It is a lot of pressure to design and execute a show in such a short timeframe, but it is very exciting,” said Rusty. Howard & Sons Pyrotechnics do shows all over the world of all different shapes, sizes, and varying budgets. Showcasing 800-900 shows a year across Australia and internationally, the company continues to grow and stay in huge demand. “We can do a show with a $500 budget up to a multi-million-dollar show spread over multiple locations.” One of the biggest shows they have ever done was in Doha, Qatar, where the fireworks stretched along a 5.5-kilometre front. “The infrastructure required for a show such as that is immense, as everything is computer controlled.” The pyrotechnics business is not immune from changing technology, with computers now managing the shows. “Computerisation is one of the greatest changes in our industry. No longer are people manually triggering the fireworks; we use electronic ignitors that run the show as per a pre-programmed sequence.” It means that the fireworks displays are far more precise than in the past, with the timing measured in 100th of a second.
“Once we were commissioned to do a firework display to commemorate the retirement of a prominent Essendon player.” Rusty explains that James was to come out onto the oval in a car and be driven around while a five minute highlights video played. All accompanied by fireworks. When the video rolled, the start button was pushed for the fireworks, and they all ignited at once.

The family-run Howard & Sons have a reputation around the world for thinking outside the box and have worked hard to improve the environmental impact of their displays. Being at the forefront of sustainability, they are reusing their tubes and adopting technology to reduce their charge sizes considerably. “People have the wrong idea about fireworks. They immediately think they are polluting, but most of them are quite benign,” said Rusty. An interesting fact is that not all fireworks are the same. “Different countries will produce different colours better. It depends on the raw materials they are using and their differing techniques. Spain produces great fireworks with unique colours. China produces other things better,” said Rusty. The company continues to stand out from the crowd by sourcing products from across the globe.
Seeing the joy our hard work creates is just a great experience
Not everything always runs to plan though.
“It was a short, albeit spectacular, display!”
Rusty feels fortunate that he often gets to share the extraordinary light shows with his family. “As I am required to travel quite a bit for work, the family tends to come along. The kids think it is pretty cool.”
Once the product is sourced, Howard and Sons use a unique modular approach in their operations which means they can set up and disassemble quickly after a show which is important when events need to move on to something else as they did for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Delhi, and Melbourne. But by far the most rewarding part of the job is the luminous final display of dancing lights in the night sky. “Seeing the joy our hard work creates is just a great experience.”

ENVIRONMENTAL
Mermaid
By Erica Louise Photos Yanni
J
osie Jones is Mornington Peninsula’s very own environmental superhero, casting her net of compassion across the coastal town of Rye. Not to catch marine life; in fact quite the opposite. For the past 8 years, Josie has trawled the foreshore and streets of the Peninsula’s holiday hotspot to collect and dispose of the town’s sea of litter. To date she has picked up 5.6 tonnes of it.
She works as a freelance graphic designer, but spends her spare time freediving and exploring the waters of Port Phillip Bay. Disappointed by the rubbish gathered in her beloved aquatic home, Josie single-handedly collects and disposes of litter washed up on her local beach and many others.
Her efforts have not gone unnoticed. Accolades include the prestigious Dame Phyllis Frost Award for longstanding contribution to the environment, the Keep Australia Beautiful Litter Prevention Award and Josie being named Australia Day Citizen of the Year 2019.
“Locals would say ‘What are you doing? Why are you picking it up? Isn’t that the Shire’s job?’” Spending so much time collecting other people’s trash made her think of a better way to address the problem.
Dubbed by National Geographic as the One Tonne Mermaid, Josie has campaigned for a cleaner Peninsula. She continued her quest after noting the volume of litter accumulating in her adopted home town of Rye. “Seeing the local environment like this just made me feel sad,” she said. Her efforts to clean up Port Phillip Bay were a combination of her creative influential skills, her hands-on “roll your sleeves up” approach and her passion to influence positive change.
“I used to spend up to two hours every day picking up rubbish”, she said. “Some people probably thought I was crazy.”
I used to spend up to two hours every day picking up rubbish, some people probably thought I was crazy
“Picking up litter isn’t ideal” Josie explains. “So I thought, Why don’t I do something to influence litter prevention on the land.” Josie approached the Mornington Peninsula Shire and Rye’s Woolworths supermarket which, during the summer months, is the busiest supermarket in Australia. When Josie first suggested litter prevention methods with both parties, neither had considered introducing recycle bins, ground education or cigarette ashtrays.
Josie spent a large part of her twenties travelling the world while modelling and managing her own successful surf accessory brand - SHARE. She settled in Tahiti where she saw the problems associated with marine litter. These experiences strengthened Josie’s affinity with the ocean and ignited her passion to rid beaches of such litter.
Josie worked with both to introduce the necessary bins and freestanding ashtrays required to dispose of the town’s litter, that was entering the bay via the stormwater drains. By tapping in to her creative skills, she designed ground decals illustrated with colourful seahorses and the words “all roads lead to our ocean thank you for caring.” Later chalk-based decals were placed in litter hotspots across Rye.
Needing to return to care for her father, who had gone blind, Josie flew back to Australia to start a new life on the Mornington Peninsula as a single mother to a young son. She returned with a desire to make a difference. And she has done just that.
Seeing the success of her local work, and people’s positive attitude changes gave her the momentum to scale up her campaign and battle one of the biggest litter problems in Australia. Cigarette butts. continued next page...

People often praise my efforts, but I couldn’t do this without the community
In 2017, Josie collected 31,000 cigarette butts from the foreshore. This nauseating problem inspired her newest mission - The Only Butt campaign. The crusade against butt control saw Josie design “cheeky” bin-size posters adorning Point Nepean road bins with the message of The Only Butt. Using a double entendre for the word “butt” the mission inspired smokers to put their butts in the bins. Five months after Josie’s re-education campaign launched, the stats went from 6/10 of Australian’s using the ground as an ashtray to 2/10. Despite Josie’s incredible achievements, she feels there is still much to be done. Josie continues to inspire and educate the community to ‘raise the standard’ on the Peninsula in relation to litter in order to keep our oceans clean. “People often praise my efforts, but I couldn’t do this without the community”, says Josie.

Arts
FRESH Perspective By Andrea Louise Thomas Photos Yanni
M
ount Martha artist, Liam Waldie, moved to the Mornington Peninsula from Brisbane’s Bohemian West End two years ago. He was immediately struck by the Peninsula’s moody rugged coastline, verdant rolling hills, big skies, stands of windswept trees, hidden surf breaks and beautiful unspoiled beaches.
He sees it all with the eyes and imagination of an artist whilst bringing a traveller’s enthusiastic wonder of discovery in a new place into the bargain. Waldie puts his own unique spin on iconic Peninsula locations, bringing a fresh perspective to familiar places using bold colours in an expressive, evocative style. His paintings are based in experience. He draws on site and sometimes paints en plein air (provided his materials are not blown away!) “I can’t just use photographs, I need to be there,” he says.

He wants to create a body of work that captures the Peninsula's essence. “There’s a painting in every footstep! I want to give my impression of the Mornington Peninsula as a newcomer. I want to share that,” he says. Waldie’s grandfather was an artist who specialised in watercolour. He had an art studio at home and it was there that young Liam made his first drawing. In fact, that very same drawing table is in his own art studio today. Seeing his grandfather’s drawings and paintings sparked his interest in art. Then, at high school, he had a teacher who recognized his talent. She mentored him and encouraged him to become a professional artist. continued next page...

Art school was the natural next step. He went to the Queensland College of the Arts completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in Illustration. A combination of practical training and theory built a strong foundation for the future, but he actually began his career working as a high school art teacher. He hoped to pay forward the passion and enthusiastic mentoring he received at high school. “The skills art making teaches us are invaluable – self-expression, observation, focus, discipline, communication - are all achieved through the practice of the arts,” he says.
I think art has the capacity to initiate change in all of us
Teaching gave Waldie the opportunity to create an inspiring curriculum for future generations of artists. All the while he was working on his own drawing and painting. After twelve years as a full-time teacher, he decided to become a full-time artist. Moving to the Peninsula and being surrounded by incredible scenery and an enclave of local artists was all the inspiration he needed.

“ I wasn’t always doing landscapes, but here they are a resource and an inspiration. The water is a different colour on the Peninsula. It can be anything from deep blue to shimmering silver. I like to borrow from the Impressionists’ ethos of capturing an image as much for what it makes you feel as for what you see. I like each of my paintings to tell a story and capture a mood,” he says. As well as creating something beautiful to look at, Waldie wants his art to have an emotional impact – one that transforms the viewer in some way. “ I think art has the capacity to initiate change in all of us,” he says.
“If my art, and the subjects I choose to paint, can spark change in the viewer - the way they see something, the way they think or act about something, whether it be the environment, or a social issue regarding justice or awareness, - I will feel I am contributing, not just adorning someone’s wall with a decorative piece,” he says.
“I’m also a firm believer that makers of art have an outlet that can promote change within the creator, an internal, intrinsic change. Creative people may be seen as a little mad, but the act of creating generates something special inside,” he adds. While he still works as an illustrator, and is currently illustrating a children’s book, and occasionally works as a graphic designer, right now, his heart is in his paintings. There is an exuberance in his Peninsula paintings that is almost palpable. His work can be viewed in his studio at Southern Buoy in Mornington, at Manyung Galleries or online. Have a look. They might just change the way you see the Mornington Peninsula.

KONNIE'S Crescendo
By Cameron McCullough
I
t has been a busy year for 23-year-old KONNIE. The peninsulabased singer has sung at the NBL Grand Final, released two singles, ‘Baby Slow’ and ‘Hide & Seek’, and is featuring on Triple-J Unearthed.
Her music is infused with boppy beats, powerful soaring vocals, dramatic builds, and intimately personal lyrics. And as a songwriter and pop singer she is on the verge of breaking through. But it has been a long road for Konnie Ambatzidis; a journey of discovery that belies her 23 years. “I’ve loved singing for as long as I can remember,” said Konnie. “When I was young, Kylie Minogue was huge. I just wanted to be her!” Konnie started singing aged five, and by seven was having singing lessons. Music was an intrinsic part of growing up in a large Greek family. continued next page...

Music represented joy. Music represented her family. And music represented a love of life. Through her school years, Konnie sang. She won a singing competition when aged 15, a part of the prize being recording studio time. “I really wanted to keep pursuing it, but was so busy with schoolwork, production and lots of other things that a 15-yearold has going on in her life”. After school, Konnie found herself living in Byron Bay. There she continued to write and sing and continued her journey of discovering her place in the world. Then things fell apart.
what was a brutal display of an insidious disease. The loss was palpable. The void immeasurable. With life knocked off its usually stable axis, it was time for Konnie to hit the road, and that’s what she did.
“After the loss of my grandfather, I went overseas for eight months,” said Konnie. Spain, Greece, Cuba, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Mexico were all on my list. “It really opened my eyes, and definitely had an influence on my music.” “It made me discover how truly important music is to so many cultures of the world.” As she travelled, Konnie continued to write, and kept a journal as she had done for much of her life.
“We found out that my grandfather was sick, and everything just froze”.
Coming back home, it was time for Konnie to take the step she’d been preparing in for her entire life.
Nick The Greek, the larger-than-life patriarch of the family, had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
Her first single, ‘Baby Slow’, was released in March this year.
“It was a very traumatic time for us,” said Konnie. “But it brought us closer as a family”. Diagnosed in March 2016, Nick died in September 2016, in

“I wrote the lyrics to this song in a day. It came so easily,” said Konnie. “We literally set up a temporary recording studio in our home in Mornington and recorded it all there.”
The boppy first single was well received and her EP was launched at a packed event in Mornington.
It is about doing something I love and am truly passionate about
In October she released her second single, ‘Hide & Seek’, a more introspective song with soaring melodies and a beat infused with influences from her travels. “The music industry is different now than in the past,” said Konnie.
“Everything I do is a learning experience. I have learned so much and continue to learn about music every day.” “It is not about money or getting rich. It is about doing something I love and am truly passionate about.” For Konnie, her great loves shine through her music. It is love for music, her family, the environment and helping those in need that makes her songs come to life. And while she has experienced much in 23 years, the journey has only just begun. What you can bet on is that this Mornington girl has a bright future in music, and you’ll be hearing her name!

This exhibition highlights his talents as one of the greatest printmakers of our time - a thrilling insight into the mind of an iconic artist still searching for new ways of seeing. David Hockney: Prints features over 80 works from 1961 to the present day, including prints developed using lithography and etching, photocopiers and fax machines, and more recently, iPhones and iPads. “Art is often about influence, and it is an absolute privilege to exhibit at the MPRG the prints of one of the greatest influencers of the 20th century, David Hockney,” Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery director Jane Alexander says. “It’s wonderful to be able to bring works by a major artist to the Mornington Peninsula for locals to see. We are really excited about this exhibition and hope that many people will enjoy the show and leave seeing the world in a different, brighter, Hockney-inspired way.” A truly international artist who moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and during his lifetime exhibited widely in the USA, UK and Europe, David Hockney has always demonstrated a profound visual curiosity and desire to surprise, shock and entertain. This is the second exhibition MPRG has hosted featuring works from the National Gallery of Australia’s Kenneth Tyler Collection. Warhol, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein. The NGA first acquired over 600 prints, rare proofs and drawings in 1974 and has continued to build a significant collection of the most important works produced at the Tyler workshops over a nearly 40-year period. The current Hockney exhibition features a number of notable series, including The Weather Series where Hockney explored the pictorial problem of how to depict the weather – sun, rain, mist, lightning, snow and wind. Always innovative when experimenting with new techniques, in rain Hockney dripped ink onto a lithographic stone, saying ‘I loved the idea of the rain as it hit the ink it would make the ink run. The moment I thought of the idea, I couldn’t resist it.’ In the Paper pools project, Hockney explored the swimming pool at Kenneth Tyler’s house in Bedford – how to depict a pool and what one chooses to look at – the water, figures diving and gliding, flickering light and shadows during the cycle of the day, the steps and the diving board. The exhibition also showcases how drawing was the foundation for all Hockney’s art. If you could draw, he once said, you could always make money. LIKE Lightning A photographer’s quest for the perfect strike
By Keith Platt
A
s storm clouds gather on the horizon most people seek shelter or prepare their properties for the worst; battening the hatches, so to speak. But that’s not the case with Yanni Dellaportas. The first sign of a storm sees him checking the weather bureau’s forecast. Where and when will it hit, how strong will the winds be or how heavy the deluge. Most importantly, will it be an electrical storm? Will there be lightning? If the answer to the last two questions is positive, Dellaportas, or Yanni as he is more commonly and professionally known, will be checking his camera and heading out the door. Yanni is a stormchaser. When others seek shelter he’s looking for a vantage point. More specifically, he prefers to photograph lightning. Over the years his lightning shots have evolved into more than just recording the flash, that giant spark that briefly connects a positively charged cloud to the negative ground.
Yanni’s naturally illuminated shots provide a more profound view of the landscape (or seascape or cityscape). The lightning strikes recorded at night create an eerie cast of colour, something that can’t be achieved artificially. The flash of lightning occurs so quickly that scenes are revealed in the blink of an eye. The images captured by Yanni clearly show what the eye is unable to retain. His fascination with storms, and lightning in particular, began more than 30 years ago on a cliff overlooking Port Phillip at Mt Martha. Using a Pentax SLR camera (given to him by his father and replacing his Kodak Instamatic) Yanni “managed to get two images from a 36-frame roll of film”. “I know that photographs do help us remember things, but I also recall the night clearly as there was no rain as such, the lightning was very close to the rocks, and I could detect a faint scent of ozone. That memory has never left me.” continued next page...

Yanni’s sense of smell was correct and shows just how close he may have been to a 33,000 degrees Celsius lightning bolt, which creates ozone through the electrical excitation of oxygen molecules. That first experience of shooting lightning was addictive. There was something about the majesty of the electrical storm that seemed to flick the on switch within Yanni’s creative sensibilities. No matter how diverse his future creative outlets, be it music, filmmaking or digital art, he would always return to the lure of the storm and the unique images he was able to capture.
“You put the film in and everything on it was all pre-set - pretty easy. I was able to document my surrounds and environment, family, friends. The images were fairly crappy in quality and square shaped, but they were a snapshot in time and still exist today,” he says.

Those first two useable images on film meant Yanni was “hooked”. “One of my best and most memorable nights was in, I think, January 1992. My wife Liz and I were living in Ormond before we had kids and there was a great thunderstorm one night. So I went down to Port Melbourne about 10pm and photographed the storm till around 6am.
Pretty much everything I shot came out. It was a good night
Yanni’s photography originally started in 1979 when he was given a Kodak instamatic for his birthday.

Everything changed when the Pentax came along: “This was a real camera - it had a built in light meter and could take different screw-on lenses. It was totally manual, no auto focus, but very versatile.”
“I had two cameras going. I used one of the new Canon EOS cameras that had just come out and an old Pentax 67 medium format camera that I had recently picked up. Again, all these pictures were taken on film - so I didn't really know what I had till I got the prints back from the photo lab a day or so later. Pretty much everything I shot came out. It was a good night.” continued next page...

Seeing his pictures on the pages of Beautiful Storm “has made the adventure worthwhile”, although choosing which ones was problematic. “I had more storm pictures than I could possibly fit into the book. But once I started sorting through the archive I found many were similar and I really wanted to present as many different photos as possible.” The idea of using poems as a sort of narrative came from Yanni’s connection with Poet's Corner and The Peninsula Writers Club, both based on the Mornington Peninsula. “I just asked my friends Heather Forbes McKeon and Andrea Rowe to ask their members to write a short storm-related poem for my new book. I also got a few poems from other writer friends who I wanted to include in the book as well.” The book’s real narrative, the pictures, are “like a day in the life of a thunderstorm”.
“I also didn't necessarily want the poetry to literally relate to a particular photo. I wanted the viewer and reader to get more than one interpretation from the picture and words.”

THE BAYS HOSPITAL PROMOTING MEN'S HEALTH AWARENESS For over a decade, men have been encouraged to grow moustaches during November. The Movember movement raises conversations and awareness around men's health matters. This camaraderie campaign brings not only men’s facial hair to the surface but also tough topics including the realities of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide. Peninsula local Troy, knows the importance of raising awareness and stimulating such conversations around men’s health. At just 42 Troy was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Troy was an otherwise fit and healthy gentleman with a young family and no history of prostate cancer in his family; the diagnosis came as a shock. Troy’s GP recognised the early warning signs and referred him to local Urology Surgeon Mr Alwin Tan. A positive diagnosis seemed unlikely, however due to latest state of the art diagnostic cancer MRI technology and the 3D trans-perineal localisation biopsy available at The Bays a biopsy was recommended. The results confirmed localised prostate cancer and this was the beginning of the cancer journey for Troy and his family. The following weeks became a whirlwind of appointments and he was ultimately scheduled for surgery. Troy and his wife Sarah met the key members of The Bays Hospital Cancer Team - Pelvic floor specialist physio, dietitian, pre admission and ward nurses along with the theatre-anaesthetic team. Within days of his diagnosis, Troy and Sarah met The Bays’ Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse, Meredith Studdert. Meredith remained by their side throughout Troy’s journey. “It’s all the little things that add up; we didn’t even have to think. Everything was organised; we called it ‘the Meredith network. "We simply showed-up to appointments. Meredith was an incredible comfort while I was simply in survival mode. She helped me manage the physical and emotional burden of having cancer,” says Troy. Under Mr Alwin Tan and his experienced surgical team at The Bays, the prostate was removed via a minimally invasive approach. On top of removing the whole prostate, care was taken to preserve his pelvic floor muscle and nerves. Troy spent a further week in hospital to allow time to recover. Recovering from a cancer diagnosis encompasses both physical and emotional challenges; a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care promotes the best outcome for patients. Team work and exceptional care are synonymous with The Bays. Troy’s care and support continued after he was discharged home. The role of every member of The Bays team cannot be under estimated. “Meredith has the ability to match patients with a specialist that best suits their needs and personality.”

“Nothing was ever too much for Meredith. If I called her at 11pm in pain, she knew what to do. Her bedside manner was so personal, I never felt like just another cancer patient. I couldn’t imagine doing this all on my own. She gave me a survival plan and was a huge comfort to Sarah.” “She still phones me every six weeks to check in, which I think is pretty extraordinary. Meredith calls me one of her boys.” The Bays is an independent, community minded, not-for-profit hospital with a long history of Oncology service that provides both surgical and medical cancer treatment locally. Combating the disease begins with screening and diagnosis before determining the necessary medical steps required for each case. From surgery to medical oncology, chemotherapy and an infusion service, The Bays offers a supportive care and treatment service for all patients. Planning is underway for an expansion of The Bays’ Comprehensive Cancer Centre. It is hoped building will commence in 2020, subject to the required designs and relevant approvals. The aim is for The Bays to provide even further support for Peninsula residents requiring cancer treatment. The new centre will welcome radiation oncology, day infusion, meeting, education, wellness and patient support areas, clinical trials capability and associated consulting suites. Troy’s story is the human face of the Movember movement. So as November is here, consider growing a mo or supporting those men who do in the name of men’s welfare. This in turn supports men like Troy who, thanks to the early diagnosis and incredible treatment provided by the team of nurses and specialists at The Bays Hospital, is now free from prostate cancer.

Eat & Drink
ON Fire By Andrea Louise Thomas Photos Yanni
S
hane Burke is a man on fire, a perfect disposition as head chef at Stumpy Gully Restaurant. He cooks with such joy and exuberance, it’s exciting to watch. Because the kitchen has no door, patrons can see the whole culinary adventure unfold. And that’s just the way Shane and restaurant owner, Daniel Broadbent, like it. Shane’s culinary history started in boyhood, cooking and baking alongside his Mum on their vast Goulburn Valley sheep farm. He wasn’t interested in high school, so his mother suggested he go to TAFE to get cooking qualifications. At fifteen, he got his first job as an apprentice baker and pastry chef at Murchison Bakery.
Meanwhile, Shane was travelling to Melbourne every other weekend to visit his older brother, who worked as a chef at The Stokehouse. Inspired by his brother’s success and heady lifestyle, Shane then moved to the big smoke to work as an apprentice pastry chef. He also worked at another Melbourne icon, Circa. While the move from country to city was a culture shock, working in vibrant kitchens during the pinnacle of Melbourne’s food scene more than made up for it. The experience was both terrifying and exciting. He worked 80 to 90 hours a week, always pushing to do better. Despite the pressure, he loved it. continued next page...

Recipe LIGHTLY CURED HIRAMASA KINGFISH / AVOCADO / MANDARIN / CASHEW & CORIANDER PESTO Kingfish Curing Mixture
600g-800g Hiramasa Kingfish, skinned, boned and blood line taken out (ask your local fish monger to do this for you if you don’t feel confident to do it yourself) 500g sea salt 500g castor sugar 1 tsp fennel seeds (roughly ground) 1tsp coriander seeds (roughly ground)
Cashew & Coriander Pesto
Avocado Puree
1 bunch coriander (washed)
half tsp wasabi powder
1 bunch mint (washed)
pinch citric acid
1 garlic clove
juice of 2 lemons
2 tblsp mandarin juice
salt
2 tblsp lemon juice
Spoon the flesh from the avocados and place in blender. Add wasabi, lemon juice and citric acid and blend until smooth. Season with salt.
100g toasted unsalted cashews
100ml vegetable oil
1 tsp juniper
50ml extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp fresh thyme
salt
Zest of 2 mandarins Combine all dry ingredients – mix well. Place 4 layers of glad wrap on a flat tray, ensuring there is enough to wrap the Kingfish twice. Create a bed using half of the curing mix in the centre of the cling wrap and sit the Kingfish on top. Cover the Kingfish completely with the remaining curing mix and wrap tightly using excess cling wrap. Place in refridgerator for 6 hours. Once ready, wash the salt mixture off the Kingfish using cold water. Wrap the fish in a fresh Chux cloth and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Chop herbs roughly. Place cashews, herbs, garlic, mandarin & lemon juice in a blender. Blend on high until combined to a rough paste consistency. Turn the blender to low and add oils slowly. Season with salt. Toasted Nori Powder 2 nori sheets Place the nori in a hot, dry pan, quickly turning from side to side to toast. Once cold, blend or grind to a fine powder.
2 ripe avocado
To Plate
Peel and segment the zested mandarins, removing as much pith as possible. Slice each segment into small pieces removing any seeds in the process. Slice the Kingfish as thinly as possible and arrange evenly over 6 plates. Place the avocado puree in piping bag or use a spoon to place 6 small dots over the king fish. Repeat same process with the pesto. Arrange 7 mandarin pieces on top of the Kingfish. Dust each plate lightly with the toasted nori powder using a sieve. Garnish with finely shaved radish and micro coriander (or normal coriander if micro not available) Serves 6.

Then he took a break from this hectic life to travel. In New Zealand he met his future wife, Julia from Norwich, England. She had just come back from working as chief stewardess on luxury yachts in the Mediterranean. Shane had always wanted to work as a private yacht chef, so he convinced her to go back.
We don’t want to have stars on the menu, we want them all to be stars
They worked side by side as a seamless team, but when Julia fell pregnant with their first child, she returned to the UK while Shane continued working on yachts with the proviso that he could fly in and fly out to have optimum time with his wife and baby. Working ship-to-shore from one breathtaking port to another between France and Turkey was a charmed life for a chef because, in addition to the spectacular scenery, his research included dining at the finest restaurants on the Mediterranean. However, when their second child was on the horizon, Shane and Julia decided to leave Europe for Australia. They chose Mornington for its lifestyle balance of city for Julia and country for Shane. whilst providing the best of both for their children. Even better, working in Peninsula vineyard restaurants meant no late nights and more family time. At Stumpy Gully, what Shane brings to the table is his own brand of modern Australian cuisine.

Drawing from his extensive experience using traditional cooking methods and using the finest local ingredients (predominantly), he is able to create exceptional and innovative dishes that are delicious to taste and beautiful to behold.
Despite thousands of recipes at his fingertips, what Shane likes best is trying new things. Great cooking involves a lot of experimentation. “I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel. I focus on flavour. I just want to make food taste the best it possibly can,” he says. The menu is sophisticated enough to appeal to the epicure, but unfussy enough to please any and every diner. “We don’t want to have stars on the menu; we want them all to be stars,” he says. (The menu changes seasonally.) Even after two decades in the food industry, Shane still loves his work. “I like to have fun, be energetic and involved and have the staff enjoy what they do. I’m a happy chef. I love what I do. The passion is still there,” he says. What more could you ask for in a dining experience? hen Georgia and Nick Bradley moved to the peninsula three years ago, the young couple loved dining out in the seaside location after always being big foodies in the city. With a love of the gastronomic delights on the peninsula, they could see a gap in the market place that wasn’t catering for the local scene. That is when the idea for the Peninsula Beverage Co was born. Since opening their bottle shop and bar this year on August 7, the young couple have already had a great response.

“We opened just a few months ago and it has been fantastic already,” said Georgia, who now works in the business full time. “We are a bottle shop with mostly local produce and the occasional outside brand thrown in.” The Peninsula Beverage Co is a boutique take-away liquor store, a totally new concept for the area.“We wanted a place where people could buy local wines, beers and ciders, but also sit and enjoy a glass or two with some nibbles if they felt like it,” said Georgia. “In actual fact, we are a bottle shop that happens to have a bar here.” Peninsula Beverage Co features a curated selection of locally made beer, wine, gin, whisky and deli goods for you to enjoy at home or within the cosy surrounds of the conveniently located store. The evolving drinks list and unique offering of locally made products will also include a smattering of items from well-known regions around Australia to keep you coming back for more. “We have whisky from Chiefs Son Distillery, beers from St Andrews Beach Brewery, and Red Hill Brewery, Rahona Valley and Polperro wines, Original Spirit Company gin, Bass and Flinders Distillery gin, and Mr Little Cider to name a few,” said Georgia. “The response from local producers has been amazing. We are basically stocking all of the local beverage companies right here.”
It may be a bottle shop but the Peninsula Beverage Co is a great place to call in for a pre or post dinner drink or pick up the essentials for a night in. The Peninsula Beverage Co is at 42 Main Street, Mornington. Phone 5977 0515. peninsulabeverageco.com.au

Peninsula’s
HOME GROWN PENINSULA FAMILIES FLOCKING TO TALKING HENS
Talking Hens is a family business based in Merricks on the Mornington Peninsula that sells entertaining, fun and friendly laying hens. It all started back in 2012 when we started a free-range egg farm business in Keysborough, on the outskirts of Melbourne. We began selling free range eggs at farmer's markets and to local customers. As we grew we started selling backyard hens along with my dad’s special chicken feed recipe. We (Giuliana and Jason), learned a lot in our five years of free-range egg farming but chose to move away from the constant demands of the egg business. We had always enjoyed our customers, however the long hours on the farm were tiring, so we decided to focus exclusively on backyard hens. We stuck to the breed we knew, the hy-line brown, which are fantastic laying hens but also the breed which is ideal for urban backyards. Not only were the hen's great layers but also very good with children and other pets. We have now collected hundreds of very entertaining stories about what the hens have done and how much they are loved by their owners. Of course, with the Australian Heart Foundation now proclaiming that us Aussies can eat as many eggs as we want to, it’s never been a better time to own your own backyard hens. The lessons that we have learned from our egg farming experience and our customers has been invaluable in providing the best advice and support we can to our customers. We have added a complete range of products to make owning backyard chickens a breeze and a pleasure that the whole family can enjoy. Open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday at our Merricks farm, you are always welcome to visit or drop us a line with a question. With so much to do in the area, our customers often combine activities then head for home with their new flock of hens at the end of the day.
Looking for backyard hens but unsure where to start? Talking Hens is a family business that loves backyard chickens! We like them so much that we specialise in supplying only the friendliest, bestlaying hens along with the best quality products to keep them happy and healthy. There’s nothing like the friendship, entertainment and nutrition that you receive from our laying hens - a pleasure to be shared! Wednesday Market Personalities Terry Gales started making wooden toys for his two grandsons using the tools and skills gained as a boat builder from younger days. “My passion for making wooden pieces continued after I retired, and I started to bring my wares to the Mornington Market”, said Terry. “These include bird feeders, nesting boxes, paper towel holders, toy trains and ornamental door stops amongst other items of interest. For the Christmas season I am making animal puzzles including Kangaroos, Kookaburras and Reindeer”. His puzzles are fun to piece together as there are no corners, straight edges or pictures to assist with their completion. Having said that they are not overly difficult either – just good fun! "What I like about the market is it’s a great place to meet the friendly locals and stall holders".
Hayley from Wickety Wax began making candles 8 years ago for friends and family whilst working full-time as a bookkeeper. 3 years later she quit her job to pursue the dream of being her own boss and have more time for her son. “Coming with a quirky name was my aim and my then 10 year old was wearing a T-shirt that read wickedy wickedy wack and he suggested Wickety Wax,” laughed Hayley. “Yes! This was it! I started booking in markets and my business began to grow”. Playing around with bath products to suit her niece who suffers from eczema, she came up with a recipe that is not only vegan but is nourishing for the skin. “My husband Mark quite often gets roped into helping me load and unload, pick up and drop off, builds my stall furniture and mans the stall when I need loo breaks,” said Hayley. Every single item is handmade including my decals which are cut on my vinyl cutter. “I’ve been attending the Main Street Market for the past 4 years and look forward to Wednesday’s every week,” she said. “All my items are made at home and I often have people walk past and tell me I have the best smelling house on the peninsula…hahaha.”
What was once a secret recipe only eaten around the dinner table with friends and family, is now shared with everyone at markets across Victoria. Harry Hoo serves hand-made dim sims, spring rolls and dumplings which are produced from locally sourced meats and vegetables combined with the secret herbs and spices. These hand rolled delicacies are made with love to be shared and enjoyed by all market goers. Accredited by the VFMA Denis and Chris are coming into their 7th year serving the Mornington Main Street Market patrons with warm bundles of joy and look forward to continuing their passion for many more years.

WAVES & WALKS The romantic allure of Cornwall The county of Cornwall on England’s rugged southwestern tip is a land of dramatic landscapes, intriguing history, archaeological treasures, ancient pathways and Cornish pasties! It has much to offer the adventurous hiker. This is where you’ll find the iconic South West Coast Path, England’s longest waymarked long-distance trail (1015km), and the lesser-known but no less compelling routes of The Saints Way and Saint Michael’s Way, which make up the ‘Cornish Camino’. The trails meander along sandy beaches, towering cliffs, sheltered estuaries and over rolling green hills and coastal valleys. Walking here is a celebration of the connection to nature – a belief embraced for centuries by Celtic Saints and Cornish locals. And of course, after a long day’s hike navigating your way past Bronze Age standing stones, centuries-old churches and crumbling tin mining engine houses, there are countless Ship Inns and Kings Arms where you can grab a hearty feed.
Or indulge in a fancy seafood platter in one of the many seaside village restaurants – Padstow boasts four Rick Stein restaurants alone. Don’t leave before trying at least one home-made Cornish pasty and cream tea.

Mt Martha
Mount Martha is a seaside town on the Mornington Peninsula 60 kilometres south-east of Melbourne's central business district. It has an area of 17.2 square kilometres. Population according to the 2016 census, is 18,548. While Mount Martha offers only a small commercial centre in Lochiel Avenue, it is an ideal destination for those visitors seeking a scenic and less commercial holiday location where the surrounding bushland meets the coast. Safe swimming beaches with wide sandy stretches exist just north and south of the commercial centre, lined with rows of colourful bathing boxes. However, much of the coast around Mount Martha typically consists of rocky cliffs with bushland up above, offering a number of walking tracks and scenic viewing spots. A worthwhile drive is along the Esplanade - a coastal road linking Mount Martha with Mornington in the north and Safety Beach in the south. This hilly and winding road hugs the steep coastline, with views down to the bay on one side, while exclusive homes perched high above the coast feature on the other side. Other attractions in Mount Martha include Balcombe Creek, which swells into a wide body of water near the coast and is surrounded by a boardwalk and is home to a rich selection bird life. Also of interest to nature lovers is Mount Martha Park which consists of 53 hectares of native bushland and walking trails surrounding the 160 metre peak of Mount Martha, offering panoramic views of the bay and towards Arthurs Seat. The Briars Park is an historic property in Mount Martha that includes the graceful Briars Homestead which was built in stages commencing in 1848 and is open for public tours. The park also includes a visitor’s

Mount Martha’s highest point bears the area's name and reaches 160 metres (520 ft). The peak was named after Martha Lonsdale, the wife of the colonist William Lonsdale. It marks the start of the Selwyn Fault, a geological formation which runs to the eastern Dandenong Ranges. From the 1990's to the present the Mount Martha area has experienced significant population growth in the south with the Martha Cove marina development as well as to the east towards the Moorooduc Highway. Mount Martha Surf Lifesaving Club holds the popular annual Mount Martha Australia Day Swim, the "MMAD Swim". Golfers play at the course of the Mount Martha Golf Club on Forest Drive. Mount Martha is also home to public tennis courts, four football ovals and numerous grass reserves.
Located upstairs this groovy relaxed café/restaurant serves great coffee (and tapas) with views out over the bay.

BUILDING SOLID FOUNDATIONS AND FUTURES Starting from the dining room table of his Langwarrin South home in 2010, Brian McDonnell aims to change the lives of budding builders. Dedicated to improving the service level of builders aspiring to become registered with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA), Builder Registration comes to life. “Builder Registration was born out of need. Just because you have completed your Certificate IV in Building and Construction – or you have a Diploma in Building and Construction, doesn’t mean you can march up to the VBA and ask for your builder's licence.”, says Brian. With partner in business Colin Brewer, the duo’s services have helped more than 70 peninsula residents become registered builders over the past few years, increasing incomes and building their careers. Almost a decade later, Builder Registration is the largest and most recommended service of its type in Australia and operates out of their Frankston Training Centre at the Frankston Power Centre. Coupled with Builder Registration is the team’s other business, Bricol Home. Registered as both domestic and commercial builders Bricol has grown from a start-up in 2014 to a diverse building business with over $40million of construction throughout
the Mornington Peninsula and South-Eastern suburbs and is a substantial new home builder in the Clyde North, Pakenham and Officer areas. Bricol Home is one of Melbourne’s most versatile and premier home builders offering the latest in home design, innovation and functionality for a dream living space. One of their newest projects, a $700,000 renovation and extension involving the addition of a new rooftop, with a lift from the first to third floor, is on the beach in Carrum. The homeowners were very thorough in their selection process, choosing Bricol Home out of eleven builders vying for the job. What makes Brian and Colin stand apart from the crowd is that, unlike many builders, they are a training organisation that builds. “We actually train our builders on site and in the classrooms to meet the knowledge and experience standards that the VBA set.” With five children and 15 grand children between them, Brian and Colin’s personalities and visions continue to click with their proven systems and highly trained staff to help builders and clients reach their goals. www.builderregistration.com.au www.bricol.com.au

History
HASTINGS’ LINK WITH THE SILENT ANZAC By Peter McCullough
I
n a quiet corner of the Tyabb cemetery in Hastings can be found the grave of Leading Signalman Albert Norman Charles Thomson. For decades the grave had no means of identification but about ten years ago a headstone was erected. So much time had elapsed since Thomson’s death in 1922 that an error has occurred and he is identified as “Norman Albert” instead of “Albert Norman.” However the line below the name reflects the role that this sailor played in our history: he was a submariner on the AE2 and, subsequently, a prisoner of war in Turkey. What was the AE2? HMAS AE2 was one of two submarines ordered by the fledgling Royal Australian Navy. It was built by Vickers Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness in England and commissioned into the RAN at Portsmouth in February, 1914.
The AE2 had four 18-inch torpedo tubes, one each in the bow and stern, plus two on the broadside, one firing to port and one to starboard. The boat carried one spare torpedo for each tube. No guns were fitted. Lieutenant Henry H G D Stoker RN had command of the AE2 and it was manned by Royal Navy officers with a crew drawn from both the RN and RAN. Together with her sister submarine, the AE1, the boat then sailed to Australia. The 24,000km voyage was at the time the longest one ever undertaken by a submarine and took 83 days. At the outbreak of World War I both submarines were assigned to the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force as it captured German New Guinea. While on this assignment the AE1 disappeared without trace and its whereabouts remained a mystery until 2017. After some weeks patrolling around Fiji the AE2 returned to Sydney in November for maintenance and repairs. continued next page...

With no need for submarines in the Pacific or Indian theatres, the AE2 was towed to the Mediterranean and arrived off Egypt in early 1915. There the boat was assigned to the Dardanelles campaign, the aim of which was to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war and open up supply lines to Russia through the Black Sea. Attempts to open the Dardanelles using naval power were unsuccessful with three Allied battleships sunk and another three crippled during a surface attack. A British and a French submarine were also lost. Despite these setbacks Lieutenant Commander Stoker planned his own attempt. Admiral de Robeck summoned Stoker to his flagship, Queen Elizabeth, and quizzed him as to how he proposed to overcome the hazards of the passage. Satisfied, the admiral said: “If you succeed, there is no calculating the result it will cause, and it may well be that you will have done more to finish the war than any other act accomplished.” Two hours later Stoker had addressed the crew, stating that he would not think ill of any sailor who wished to withdraw. No one hesitated and all settled down to write what might have been their last letters to their families. The submarine was provisioned and was soon on its way from Mudros harbour on the island of Lemnos. Into the provisions went a case of vintage port - a sign of Stoker’s optimism for the mission. In his autobiography “Straws in the Wind”, published in 1925,
Stoker recalled how, the gravity of their circumstances notwithstanding, there was still ample room for humour when it came to allocating tasks in the capture of Turkey’s exotic capital: “The captain of the submarine was immediately to proceed in search of rare and priceless gems. The second officer was to inspect the ladies of the harem, during which process the third officer would engage the chief eunuch in polite conversation. That the fall of Constantinople did not take place may partly be attributed to the lack of patriotism of the third officer who, it is regrettable to have to record, showed a great distaste for the duty allocated to him.” Stoker’s confidence proved to be well founded for on 25 April the AE2 was the first submarine to successfully penetrate the waterway and enter the Sea of Marmara. With orders from the admiral’s chief of staff to “generally run amok” inside Turkish territory, the AE2 operated for five days during which time she sank a Turkish cruiser and was a major distraction for the Turkish navy and the on-shore batteries. Mechanical faults eventually forced her to surface where she was damaged by the torpedo boat Sultanhisar. Meanwhile news of the submarine’s success was spread to the soldiers ashore to improve morale. In fact the landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April had gone so badly that Lieutenant General Birdwood pushed for re-embarkation of his troops. News that the AE2 had successfully negotiated the minefield and entered the Sea of Mar-

mara was thought to be a factor in the decision to persevere with the ground assaults. It prompted General Sir Ian Hamilton, who commanded the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the Gallipoli campaign, to send his famous message to the Australians: “...the Australian submarine has got up through the Narrows and has torpedoed a gunboat ... You have got through the difficult business. Now you have only to dig, dig, dig until you are safe.” In the Sea of Marmara, with the hull badly damaged, Stoker ordered the boat’s company to evacuate and the AE2 was scuttled. All crew members survived the attack although four were to die of illness while in captivity. The AE2’s achievements showed others the task was possible and within months Turkish shipping and lines of communication were badly disrupted, with supplies and
reinforcements for the Turkish defence of Gallipoli forced to take underdeveloped overland routes. The AE2 was the only RAN vessel to be lost as the result of enemy action in World War I and, along with sister boat AE1, the total of the RAN’s operational losses in the war. After several years of searching Selcuk Kolay, director of the Rahmi M. Koc Museum in Istanbul, located the submarine in June, 1998 lying in 72 metres of water. Several months later an Australian diving team confirmed the wreck as being the AE2. The submarine is not a war grave and the Australian government makes no claim to the shipwreck. continued next page...

In September, 2007 a major marine archaeological expedition which included divers, scientists, physicians, filmmakers, photographers, journalists and archaeologists took place under the auspices of Turkish and Australian naval authorities. There were dramatic moments when a small camera was inserted into the submarine and observers were able to see the control room and living quarters. Notwithstanding a thorough search, no trace could be found of the case of vintage port; perhaps this was just a myth which enhanced the image of the colourful commander. The operation was closely supervised by “Bunts, a two metre long conger eel which had taken up residence in the conning tower. The main objective of the undersea investigation was to determine if the AE2 could be raised and

restored. Such a plan would have seen the submarine transferred to a viewing tank at Canakkale. Following the detailed inspection a recommendation was made against raising the wreck. Moving the submarine to a viewing tank, or alternatively relocating the wreck to shallower water, were advised against because of the estimated $80-100 million cost. Moving AE2 would also pose high risk to both the submarine and any vessels involved in the relocation; as well as potentially damaging the wreck there is an unexploded torpedo on board which would have prompted the investigators to suck in through clenched teeth. A subsequent workshop advised that the submarine be preserved through the use of sacrificial anodes to reduce corrosion, along with buoys and a surveillance system to mark the wreck and detect unauthorised access
and potential damage. This work has now been carried out. At a top level meeting of Australian and Turkish representatives held in Istanbul in April, 2015, the Australian delegation formally handed over documentation regarding the AE2 and official ownership of the wreck. With the publicity surrounding the Gallipoli campaign in its centenary year of 2015, the deeds of Lieutenant Commander Stoker and his crew also received recognition. In their writings historians and journalists have come to refer to the AE2 as “The Silent Anzac.” So who was Leading Signalman Albert Thomson? Albert Thomson was in fact born in Albury on 24 May, 1888. His mother did not survive the birth of her son and in the mid 1890’s his father returned to Scotland, taking Albert with him. In 1905 he left his job as a painter’s assistant to join the Royal Navy for 12 years service, signing on as a “boy, 2nd class.” He trained and qualified as a signalman on the Victory, and served on a number of RN ships, rising to Leading Signalman. Thomson’s role as as leading signalman provided him with the nickname “Bunts” (from naval slang, “Bunting Tosser”) and in
1913, possibly because of his Australian roots, he volunteered for service on the new RAN submarine AE2. He was selected as one of the original crew and was officially on loan to the RAN for three years. Thomson recorded the historic moment of the sinking of the AE2 in a series of graphic sketches which he drew later at prison camps, first at Afion Kara Hissar, then at Belemedik. At the latter, Thomson gained a reputation for stepping into fist fights to help AE2 comrades and by April, 1917 he had been transferred to a remote railway camp, possibly as punishment for fighting. Conditions there were appalling and Thomson and Bill Williams, also from AE2, tried to escape. In his secret diary Australian army corporal George Kerr recounted: “They spent all one Sunday night roaming the mountains until Bill Williams lost heart, to use Bunts’ words, and said it would be advisable to return ... Bunts was cut up over Williams’ lack of courage, and says he tried to keep his heart up but all to no purpose.” (Williams, from Dunkeld in Victoria, died in mysterious circumstances while still a prisoner-of-war. He was one of four brothers; all enlisted but none returned.) continued next page...

Not to be deterred, on 9 July, 1917 Thomson and Gwynne, also an AE2 submariner, made another escape attempt. Kerr wrote: “They set out nearly a month ago and had been gone a fortnight before the man in charge reported them missing. The Turks knew nothing for a long time (because) two men from the night shift (would) take their place for ... counting ... We (then) received news that they had been taken near Adana after having been seen wandering about for three or four days begging bread and water. Everyone believes them to be caught but they have not passed this way yet.” Following this escapade Thomson was returned to Belemedik and there were no further escape attempts recorded. After his release he returned to London on Christmas Eve, 1918. Despite being very thin, his physical constitution must have been strong for on 25 March, 1919 he re-enlisted for three years: this time with the RAN. These years were spent at shore bases Platypus and Cerberus. In 1920 he was joined by his wife Florence and son John who came out on the Zealandia. They set up home in Hastings where two more children-Ruby and Norman-were born. On completion of his three years Thomson saw a business opportunity and obtained a bus, or more correctly a charabanc, which may have been uncovered where the driver sat. The vehicle would be used to service the navy and the community. After surviving against terrible odds, Thomson died tragically on 29 May, 1922 when the bus overturned going around a corner in Hastings near where the Scout Hall is now situated. Apparently a wheel went into

loose gravel and the driver was unable to regain control. A number of navy personnel on board were injured but Thomson was the only fatality. He was 34. To compound the tragedy Norman, the youngest of the three children, was born on the day his father was killed. For some years the family battled on their large block in Hastings near where Coles is now situated. John, nine at the time, was taken in hand by the nuns and sent to the St Vincents orphanage in South Melbourne. He came home at weekends to help his mother with the cow and other chores. John eventually became a fitter and turner and lived in South Melbourne. He married Bessie and they had two children: John and Patricia. Ruby grew up in Hastings and married local boy, Ken Edwards. They farmed near Hastings and then moved to a Soldier Settlement block at Numurkah. Ruby and Ken had eight children and Ruby lived in retirement in East Maitland until her death in August of this year at the age of 99 years and ten months. Norman spent his working life as a builder in Sydney and had two sons. Albert’s widow, Florence, re-married, to Albert Bryant, a brother of Owen who was the grandfather of present Hastings resident, Max Bryant. Although some in the Bryant family believe Albert was the local policeman, others say that is a misconception as he was a Military Policeman during the war. Florence and Albert had no children but they did adopt a boy, Ron, who had a physical disability. Ron later owned the ice works in Hastings.
Above left: John Thomson, grandson of Albert, on board HMAS Anzac, commemorating the centenary of the AE2’s sinking on 30th April 1915. Above right: “Bunts” sandshoes, still neatly stacked in the flag locker, in the conning tower. Below: Tyabb Cemetery in Hastings. The final resting place of Leading Signalman Albert Thomson.
In an interesting third generation link John Thomson, the son of John and grandson of Albert, has been actively involved in the discovery of the wreck and the investigation of the proposal to raise the AE2 from the floor of the Sea of Marmara. At the time John indicated that he was pleased with the decisions made and work carried out by the authorities. One of the highlights of his involvement was seeing his grandfather’s sandshoes neatly stacked in the flag locker in the conning tower. It would not be hard to guess who provided
the name “Bunts” for the resident conger eel! It was John, together with Barry Edwards, a son of Ruby, who was responsible for the installation of the tombstone in the Hastings cemetery. Location of the grave site was difficult and the error with the name is explained by the fact that an alteration was made on the birth certificate creating some confusion. However the man in question was always known as Albert or, more commonly, “Bunts.” continued next page...

Above: Dacre Stoker. From Wimbledon to the Dardenelles. Facing page: Dacre Stoker as the easygoing husband in the 1921 play “A Social Conscience”.
Dacre Stoker: Larger than life Henry Hugh Gordon Dacre Stoker was born in Dublin, Ireland on 2 February, 1885 to Dr. John Stoker and his wife, Jane. The “Dacre” was hastily included in the name when the child’s wealthy godfather threatened to cut him from his will if his existence was not recognised. As it turned out, the godfather ventured to South Africa to dabble in diamonds and was not heard from again. The godson, however, took a fancy to that name and was generally known as Dacre for the rest of his days. Also of family significance was that the Irish novelist Bram Stoker, who wrote the 1892 Gothic novel “Dracula”, was a cousin. Although his family included many doctors, at the age of 12 young Dacre decided on a career in the navy and in 1900 he joined the Royal Navy as a 14-year-old cadet. While an average student, Stoker did excel at sport, particularly rugby, hurling, polo and tennis. He competed at Wimbledon several times, winning the doubles one year against a Spanish pair. Stoker played tennis until well into his 70's. Dacre Stoker was promoted to midshipman (1901) and then sub-lieutenant (1904). After service in the western Atlantic he became interested in in the submarine service - a relatively new branch of the navy. This was at a time when not everyone was in favour. Admiral Sir Arthur Wilson’s famous comment that they were “underwater, underhand and damned un-English” summed up traditionalist naval suspicion that there was something sinister and sneaky about “submersibles”, as they were then called. Sneaking up on the enemy from behind was just not cricket, old chap. In fact Wilson also sniffed that submariners caught in wartime should be hanged as pirates. These were the times in the Royal Navy when it was said that “captains spoke only with admirals and admirals spoke only with God”. Stoker found it difficult to maintain his lifestyle on a Sub-Lieu-

tenant’s pay of five shillings a day; as a submariner he would receive an additional six shillings a day. This was sufficient incentive and he started training in October, 1906. Two months later he was promoted to Lieutenant. Dacre Stoker was very much a free spirit and reveled in the freedom that the submarine service offered. He was given command of a submarine in January, 1909 and in 1913 he volunteered to serve on loan with the RAN as commanding officer of one of its new submarines. By this time he was infatuated with polo and the reason for his transfer was information that in Sydney there was a rich man who would pay all your expenses if you’d only go and play polo with him. Although the “rich man” never materialised, it marked the beginning of his association with HMAS AE2 which came to a dramatic conclusion with its sinking on 30 April, 1915. For the next three and a half years Stoker, who had been promoted to lieutenant commander in December, 1914, was held in the various Turkish prisoner-of-war camps where he used his acting talents to entertain fellow prisoners. In March, 1916 he escaped and was on the run for 18 days before he was recaptured and imprisoned in Constantinople. Stoker was repatriated to England in December, 1918, reverted to Royal Navy service, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1919: “In recognition of his gallantry in making the passage of the Dardanelles in command of HM Australian Submarine AE2 on 25 April, 1915.” Many considered that the Victoria Cross would have been more appropriate as it had been awarded to three other captains of Allied submarines. Although promoted to commander in 1919, Stoker chose to leave the navy in the following year; he had always been a keen amateur actor and playwright and now pursued his second career. As an actor Stoker was successful on the stage in both Britain and the United States. He often played the part of a professional such as a military officer or a doctor. By the end of the 1920s Stoker was
a regular and popular performer in West End plays and in 1932 started radio broadcasts of short dramatic stories. In 1933 he made his first cinema appearance in the movie “Channel Crossing”. In 1935 he played the part of a naval officer whose ship was sunk in action in World War 1 in the movie “Brown on Resolution.” Overall Stoker appeared in eight films from 1933 through to 1948 and was credited as H G Stoker or Dacre Stoker. His contemporaries included Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir John Mills. He was also the business manager of the Apollo Theatre. His autobiography “Straws in the Wind”, which was largely about his adventures on the AE2, was published in 1925. When war broke out in 1939 Stoker was recalled to the Royal Navy. With the rank of acting captain he served in a variety of capacities from being in command of a coastal services base, to public relations officer in the Admiralty, to being involved in the planning for D-Day. He retired again in late 1945 and returned to his life as an actor and playwright. Dacre Stoker became involved in early television dramas in the 1950s but, now well into his mid-60s, he began to take life a little more quietly and devoted additional time to sporting pursuits such as golf, tennis and, particularly, croquet which he found attractive to his ageing limbs. While one critic of that era described croquet as an “...impossibly difficult exercise played to incomprehensible rules by venomous old people with a tendency to swear”, Stoker was fascinated by it. In fact in 1962, at the age of 77, he became the croquet champion of Ireland. He was also a member of the exclusive Garrick Club for gentlemen associated with the theatre in London’s West End. Lieutenant Commander Stoker died in London on his 81st birthday on 2 February, 1966. Reference: Fred and Elizabeth Brenchley “Stoker’s Submarine.” - ATOM Publishing, 2013.
