ichael Savage, owner of Enchanted Adventure Garden, knows all about adventure. Last year he visited all seven continents seeking off the beaten track escapades such as, back country hiking and skiing in Antarctica, horse riding alongside big game migrations in Kenya and shark cage diving with great white sharks in Port Lincoln, South Australia. So, visiting an adventure park planned by such an intrepid character is certain to be a lot of fun.
Fun and adventure was always at the heart of his plans. In 1992 he purchased a fifteen-acre paddock on Purves Road in Arthurs Seat. The original idea was to create a set of gardens that would appeal to children and adults alike. The hook for kids would be a maze. The first incarnation of Enchanted Adventure started with formal gardens and a lake. It grew into twenty themed gardens with three mazes opening as The Enchanted Maze Garden in 1997. When he was able to purchase an adjacent block, another development began. This time the focus was on creating a sculpture garden. He employed local artists-in-residence, such as, sculptor Ken Blum, who crafted a remarkable collection of large scale sculptures hewn from cypress logs using axe, chainsaw and chisels. Today, there are many other artists represented across multiple mediums from wood and ceramics to steel and glass. While the gardens were beautiful and the mazes intriguing, Savage wanted to build more adventure into the park. Tube slides were just the trick. As soon as they were completed, children and adults alike were lining up to pop themselves into an inner tube and go careening down the hill to do it all over again. It’s just as popular today. Having the grounds covered, Savage then looked to the sky. He wanted to create an adventure in the trees as he had seen whilst travelling through Europe. With a large eucalypt forest right in the park, it seemed a natural progression. He was persistently told it would never fly. continued next page...

Despite the naysayers, he got his tree surfing enterprise off the ground and it’s now arguably the most successful feature of the business. Tree surfing is not for the faint of heart. There is good reason to be strapped into a harness ascending up to five levels of progressively more challenging obstacles to the top. The effort does not go unrewarded as the zipline back down again is one of the most enjoyable parts of the adventure. There is nothing to fear, but fear itself, as this activity is totally safe. Also, there is no hurry as visitors have up to two hours to complete the course.

Another serious drawcard is the big zipline that crosses the park from top to bottom. It’s 200 metres of exhilarating fun. If tree surfing or ziplining are a bit too much to take on, the canopy walk gives an aerial perspective with less adrenaline plus an opportunity to view native flora and fauna. With 85 bird species in the area, visitors might find themselves eye to eye with a sulphur-crested or yellow-tailed black cockatoo, wattlebirds, galahs, crimson rosellas, or laughing kookaburras. Evolution is a constant at Enchanted Adventure. Savage always has one foot in the future dreaming up new adventures to offer visitors. Right now, the latest attraction is under construction - Sky

Scramble. It’s an aerial playground without the harnesses. Accessed via the canopy walk or steps, the Sky Scramble features a series of rope bridges, nets, slides and cubbies located up to 10 metres in the air. Sky Scramble’s first stage will be open in time for Christmas.
Savage has much to be proud of in bringing his ambitious plans to fruition, but it is still the people that thrill him most. “I love the guests and the staff because I get to see people at their best. When they are here, everyone is having a happy day out and my staff help facilitate that. I have great staff,” he says. Enchanted Adventure is now a world-class eco adventure park with something for every visitor whether they are strolling through themed gardens, negotiating intriguing mazes, whizzing down a zipline, exploring the canopy, tree surfing or just enjoying a great cup of coffee looking out on a beautiful vista. rothers Benjamin and Dylan Presutti are going to change the world. Or, at least, how people drink their takeaway coffee. Dad (Alex), mum (Chelsea) and their kids love being out in nature. They love planting things and watching them grow. At the young ages of five and four, the nature-loving dynamic duo have admirable ambitions: Benji’s mission of saving the world and Dylan’s yearning to reuse paper and plastic rubbish mesh together perfectly and have inspired the family’s patented innovation called 'Litterbug'. Segueing from the old non-recyclable paper cup, 'Litterbug' takeaway coffee cups are made from recycled paper products and agricultural bi-products (plant fibres) and a 100% biodegradable plant-based polymer. They break down within 30-60 days. Alex tells us, “The sad truth is that most paper cups end up in our

landfills, waterways, oceans, or somewhere on the international waste market. We’re going to change that.” What takes the cups to next-level sustainability is that they have been imbedded with heirloom seeds native to the area. After use, 'Litterbug' cups can be planted, and in a few weeks the seeds will sprout, and an edible plant will grow. If nurtured, they will provide food and more heirloom seeds. The concept of heirloom seeds is interesting because they are the original organics and they continue to produce. Plants have the potential to reduce 25% of carbon emissions from human activity but the heirloom seed factor makes that exponential, continuing to remove carbon from the atmosphere. Plants use the energy of sunlight, and through the process of photosynthesis they take carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and water from the ground. In the process of continued next page...

'Litterbug' is carbon negative. Carbon negativity is the reduction of an entity’s carbon footprint to less than neutral, so that the entity in question has a net effect of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere rather than adding it. The idea of an environment-friendly cup that can clean the air, grow food, and act against climate change blossomed about a year ago in the family’s own backyard in Rye.
As parents we have a responsibility to teach our children to care for the earth
After spending time collecting rubbish that they found at the beach and on the road, they started making their own paper just for fun. “We were making it as a little hobby. The boys loved doing all the shredding and crushing up the paper,” said Alex. After mixing and pressing the pulp Benji and Dylan thought it would be neat to mould the new paper into cup shapes and see how long they took to dry in their yard. From there, one thing quickly led to another and the Presutti family decided to try to press the paper with seeds in it. Alex recalls thinking, “If we can make a compostable cup, how great would that be?” They started planting the prototypes and they sprouted. That’s where the turning point was. It was time to investigate this a little further. After patenting 'Litterbug' cups with IP (Intellectual Property) Australia, they built a website to create some funding and the page quickly gained
viewers. They are now looking to mass produce the cups and get them out into the world, ending the reign of single use cups. “I think there’s enough paper and packaging companies out there that the next step would be to look for one of those to license the patent. We’ve had a lot of interest so far,”Alex added.
The goal for 'Litterbug' is to launch their seeded cups and be the tip of the spear of sustainable innovations. It is to be a company that's determined to save the Earth for future generations while embracing renewable resources, new technology, and creating economic stability with liveable wages through their like-minded, action-taking partnerships. The 'Litterbug' crew will work in conjunction with farms for agricultural plant bi-product, eco-friendly packaging firms, seed harvesting experts and viable distribution platforms and delivery systems. “As parents we have a responsibility to teach our children to care for the Earth. As human beings we have a responsibility to take action. Let’s protect the Earth for future generations.”

F
or the past four years, Helen Powell, together with her team of Wonder Women, has powered along the coast of the Mornington Peninsula to fight against ovarian cancer. Despite being diagnosed with the disease six years prior, Helen remarkably summoned the inner strength to start and grow the Wonder Woman Walkers movement.
The Wonder Woman Walkers, now in its fourth consecutive year, is an annual coastal event raising funds and awareness for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). It begins at the Safety Beach Sailing Club and finishes at Hotel Sorrento. In October 2019, the Wonder Woman Walkers raised $32,000 for the cause.

Ovarian cancer is a disease that often goes undetected until it has spread. This is because the illness presents no symptoms in the early stages. The symptoms that do present themselves are indifferent, and can often be associated with other, less severe, medical conditions such as mild abdominal discomfort. In 2013, Helen sought medical help after experiencing two weeks of bloating. “The prolonged bloating was very unusual for me, so I went to my GP and said 'something doesn’t feel right'. I was very lucky that my GP took notice and sent me for a full scan, which identified advanced stage cancer,” says Helen. continued next page...

Helen is a mother of four boys ranging from 12 to 23 years. Her family had moved to the Mornington Peninsula from Wales in the UK ten years prior. She describes her family as a “good bunch” who are a terrific support for her and her many endeavours. “As I was recovering from my treatments for ovarian cancer, I couldn’t help but think about those women who are diagnosed with the disease when they are much younger. I had finished having my family, but for those who are younger, this is devastating news.” Despite being a nurse, Helen didn’t know much about ovarian cancer and hadn’t realised there was no early detection for the disease. “To identify the early stages of breast cancer, for example, women know they must have regular screenings, and for cervical cancer, go for regular pap smear tests. With ovarian cancer, there are no

Although faced with an uncertain future, Helen gathered a team of friends to raise money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation by walking the coastline of the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. “It all started about four years ago. A few friends wanted to do a walk anyway. I was at work and a friend said ‘why don’t we do it for charity?’ I’d done some charitable work over the last few years such as afternoon teas. We all agreed to do a walk. There were six of us at the time. We really enjoyed it and raised $8000,” says Helen. This saw the emergence of the newly–named Wonder Woman Walkers. The number of participants, many of whom dressed in Wonder Woman attire, tripled to 18 the following year, 60 in 2018, and 200 in 2019. Helen believes the popularity of the walk grew quickly as other women also recognised the camaraderie and joy in undertaking a beautiful walk along the Peninsula’s stunning coastline. She says, “We’d see women talking to other women and say later how they’d met a great friend that day because they’d talked all the way.” She also believes that more people are becoming aware of ovarian cancer. There was a girl who joined the Wonder Women Walkers whose mother had died from ovarian cancer a few months prior. She couldn’t believe her mother led such a healthy lifestyle, yet this had happened to her.

The walk is earmarked as a casual meander, timed for a coffee stop and lunch. In the 2019 event some of the 200 women decided to complete the walk in three hours. However many took their time, beginning at around 8:30am, with most finishing up around 4pm. Helen hopes her Wonder Woman Walkers’ fundraising efforts will raise awareness for ovarian cancer. She would also like to see the introduction of an early detection test in the future.

As an ambassador for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, she sits on a panel of people who have either had ovarian cancer or know someone who has been affected by the disease. She therefore sees the research papers as they come in. “There are lots of exciting things going on. Treatment and early detection for ovarian cancer hasn’t really changed in 30 years. However, Australia is ahead of its game and there’s lots of exciting work being done. The government has funded $15m into research this year, which is brilliant news.” Helen admits she wouldn’t have achieved such success with the Wonder Woman Walkers if it were not for the support and help of the community. “From the generosity of Driver Coaches – Hastings providing manned buses for free to transport walkers from the end of the walk back to the start, to the Mornington Football Club providing boxes of food, and so much more. The feeling that the Peninsula is behind us has been overwhelming.” This year peninsula local Greg Hunt, the Federal Minister for Health, also backed Helen’s mission. Helen is hopeful the event will also take place next year. Although she is in now receiving palliative care, and is no longer able to walk, her many friends and colleagues have expressed a desire to continue with the fundraiser in 2020. Helen might not think of herself as a warrior, but for the women of the Mornington Peninsula and beyond, she certainly is.

A
mong the thousands who braved ‘the hill’ in this year’s Arthurs Seat Challenge, one group stood out. In fact, they have won the ‘largest community team entry’ for three years in a row. But most would be unaware of the story behind ‘Team Lyndon’, and how the tragic loss of one man has made a huge difference. Lyndon Williams was just 26 years old when he was killed in a road accident in November 2016. It left his friends, family and partner of five years, Kate, at a loss as to how to move forward and honour his memory. “Lyndon and I were on the edge of our future together,” said Kate. “Despite having been together for five years, it felt like we were just starting. We were in the process of buying our first home, had discussed marriage, children and had so many exciting

adventures planned. Nothing could have prepared me to have him ripped out of my life.” Lyndon and Kate had both grown up on the Mornington Peninsula. They met, aged 21, at a university party. For Kate it was love at first sight; they became good friends and eventually partners. They had so many common interests: a love of the outdoors, a love of hiking, a love of the water. Lyndon was also the captain of Peninsula Old Boys soccer team, and a huge advocate for helping others, especially in the area of men’s health. Kate was building her jewellery business, and Lyndon supported her dreams. “Lyndon would wake up early with me and help out at all my markets without a complaint, selling my jewellery much better than I ever could.”

Kate supported Lyndon too. “He was such a great friend. He was passionate about life. He loved his job,” said Kate. “Lyndon taught PE and Health at Cranbourne East Secondary College. He loved teaching and had so much respect and time for all of his students.” Lyndon’s death was a devastating blow to Kate, but the effects were widely felt. “Lyndon wasn’t just my partner. He was a son, a brother, a teammate, a teacher, and a great friend to so many people,” said Kate. “He touched so many lives in just 26 short years”. Close to 1000 people attended his funeral. After Lyndon’s death, his family and friends felt they wanted a way to honour him. Lyndon was a fitness fanatic. He loved sport, and he loved running. In fact, he had competed in the Arthurs Seat Challenge in the years before he died. Kate and her friends came up with the idea of celebrating his life by competing in the annual run up Arthurs Seat. The Arthurs Seat Challenge coincided with the anniversary of Lyndon’s death, was an event he loved, and was in aid of Fit-To-Drive, an organisation raising funds for driver education for youth. “I would always laugh at him ‘You’d never get me running up that hill’”, said Kate. “But now the Arthurs Seat Challenge seemed like a perfect way to honour him. It seemed fitting that at the time of such pain and grief, we could do something so positive”. So, ‘Team Lyndon’ was formed. In 2017, the first anniversary of Lyndon’s death, ‘Team Lyndon’ made its first run up ‘the hill’. “I feel like Lyndon would be laughing at us. Embracing an event he loved, and watching us all struggle up ‘the hill’!” “The Arthurs Seat Challenge is really positive among the sadness. Getting out in the sunshine and raising money for an important cause is great. It also offers a chance for us all to get together;

Lyndon’s family, friends, work colleagues and even people that never met him who have been touched by Lyndon’s story, are joining the team.” The organisers of Arthurs Seat Challenge originally didn’t know the story behind ‘Team Lyndon’, or why they entered such a big team. They only became aware of Lyndon’s story after the team had won the team award in the event in 2017. “They were touched by the story, and were keen for us to tell it, as it has a strong message for road safety, which is what the Arthurs Seat Challenge is all about,” said Kate. “And we are happy to tell it to keep the memory of Lyndon alive and hopefully help raise awareness about road safety”. The importance of ‘Team Lyndon’ is not lost on the organisers of the Arthurs Seat Challenge, or the cause the event is run for. “I would like to say how important it is that ‘Team Lyndon’ has become an established part of our Arthur’s Seat Challenge event”, said Angela Pollard, the Chairperson of Fit-To-Drive Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Association. “The event is the major fundraiser for the Association, which was established following the tragic loss of a number of young people through road accidents, and local principals got together to take action. “The Fit-To-Drive Program has recently celebrated completion of the course by its 100,000th student, and our commitment to doing all we can to reduce the road toll through education, remains as strong as ever. “While ‘Team Lyndon’ has originated from the terrible loss of a loved one, Lyndon’s family and friends honour his memory annually and ensure that their contribution assists others to continue to work toward further reduction in the loss of lives on the roads”.

osebud’s Maxine Wauchope has helped shape the sport of netball on the peninsula like no other. The current Head Coach of Mornington Football Netball Club and Mornington Peninsula Netball Association Squad (a position she has held for the last 15 years), Maxine has a list of awards and achievements that reflect her lifelong dedication to the sport, a sport she has been involved in for over five decades.
Maxine’s passion for netball is no great surprise given her family history. Quite simply, netball runs in her blood, it’s part of her DNA. Back in Port Augusta, South Australia, where Maxine was born, Maxine’s mother Dolly and her mother’s three sisters played for the Shamrocks Netball Club, a club that needed a home. So, Dolly and her sisters did catering jobs to raise the money to build netball courts on land donated by Maxine’s uncle, Brandon Collins, and on those courts Maxine started her netball journey at the age of ten, surrounded by family and friends. Yes, netball is indeed a family affair for Maxine. Along with her mother and aunties, Maxine’s sister was also a netballer and went on to represent the state of South Australia in basketball, and her cousin Shirley O’Reilley, OAM, who recently received her Order

of Australia for 50 years’ service to the sport of netball in South Australia, is still playing in her 80’s. Maxine moved to Frankston in 1968 and, not knowing many people, she set out to build networks and friendships through sport. She founded the Frankston version of the Shamrocks Netball Club which grew from modest beginnings to having eight night-time teams and six daytime, married-ladies’ teams. As well as playing, Maxine also went on to become club coach and even took on the umpiring duties. Over the next two decades, Maxine took on a number of coaching appointments: Frankston East, Frankston YCW and Squad Coach for the Frankston District Netball Association. She also became the Vice-President of the Mornington Peninsula Netball Association in 1979 and the Competitions Co-ordinator and Umpires’ Convenor for the Bruce Park Ladies’ Competition from 1979-1989. However one of her greatest achievements happened off the court in 1990, when Maxine set up the ‘Two Bays College of Coaching’ in partnership with Netball Victoria for the identification and development of elite players and coaches on the Peninsula. the Open Country Victoria team in '94-'95, winning the country region competition in both years. Her coaching skills were recognised as exceptional and Maxine was invited onto selection panels for a number of representative teams including the 17U and 19U Victorian state teams from '88 to '94. In 1993 Maxine accepted one of her highest profile roles as Assistant Coach for the Victorian Open State Team that included the likes of Shelley O’Donnell, Roselee Jencke and Simone McKinnis, all of whom played for Australia at the time. Maxine’s contribution to netball continued in the new millennium with the application of her vast coaching skills and experience in a number of Head Coach, Selector and Mentor roles including – Head Coach of Netball Victoria’s Northern and Eastern Academies (2006-2011), Director of Coaching Mornington Peninsula Netball Association (2002-2019), Netball Victoria Talent Scout (2006-2017), Netball Victoria Coaching Instructor (2007-2018) , Primary Schools’ State Team Selector (2007-2019) and Netball Victoria 21U State Team Selector (2003-2012) just to name a few. One of Maxine’s greatest thrills was to be invited to be a statistician for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games Netball Competition. Even greater still was the granting of a licence to the Peninsula Waves Netball Club in 2009 to compete in the elite Victorian Netball League competition (VNL), the realisation of a plan that was drafted in 1992 when Maxine was part of a committee with her good friend Shelley Haynes who co-founded the club that was originally known as Peninsula State League Netball Club. Maxine’s tireless efforts and dedication to the sport of netball on the Peninsula has resulted in life memberships at both the Peninsula Waves and the Mornington Peninsula Netball Association but it’s not the awards and accolades that keep her in the sport. “It is the pleasure I get from giving,” Maxine said. “The pleasure I receive in seeing players grow and develop, see their self-confidence improve on and off the court and watch them become leaders in their own right, imparting the importance of giving back and watching them continue the cycle by taking up coaching and mentoring positions themselves.” Maxine has given so much to netball but by her own reckoning she has also received much in return. “Netball has opened up so many opportunities for me off the court to do things like travel and to impact on people’s lives.” On a trip to the Cook Islands for a 21U

World Championships, Maxine spotted a young Mwai Kumwenda from Malawi, recognising the young goal shooter’s talent she helped her to get to Australia to further her skills and opportunities. Mwai now plays for the Vixens, something Maxine is very proud of. It’s clear that for Maxine Wauchope, many of the greatest benefits of netball and sport in general happen off the court. “I’ve always believed that getting children involved in sport gives them a more positive outlook on life,” she said. “Sport provides great fun, great friendships, fitness and life lessons.” And the most important life lesson that Maxine’s time in netball has provided is the value of friendship. “Yes, I have given a lot to netball, but it has given a lot to me.” And nothing is more evident to me talking to Maxine than the value she places on friendship, for on the day I interviewed her, she was on her way to Frankston Hospital to deal with significant health issues and it was her longtime friend Shelley Haynes who was taking her there. A friend she made through netball and one that will be for life.

M
ornington Peninsula-born DJ, Samuel Pulsford, has come a long way from teaching himself the basics in his bedroom to performing at one of Australia’s largest music festivals, Beyond The Valley, in 2019.
Just over eight years ago, the 21-year-old university student kicked off what has now become one of his key passions with a school laptop, a single DJ kit and the desire to create music similar to that of his favourite electronic artists. Eventually saving up his money and improving his techniques, Pulsford progressively made his way from performing at his mates’ high school parties, to 18ths, 21sts and even weddings. Pulsford said the reception he gets when DJing has been a major driving force as well as performing for, and alongside, some of his best mates.

“I think I obviously have a really strong passion for music and I also have a really big love for my friends and socialising with my friends so when you combine the two, and to get everyone smiling and dancing it’s always just an awesome vibe,” he said. Pulsford played at several underage events before lining up at his first proper gig at Motley Thursdays in his hometown of Mornington as a fresh 18-year-old. The self-taught artist continued to play at clubs on the Peninsula such as Motley and Cruze before branching out further with his musical talent. He says, unlike most professions, everything is basically self-taught when it comes to becoming a DJ. continued next page...
“All of my learning was self-taught or learning from other DJs just by watching them and listening to them,” he said. “A lot of what I learnt, because I love it so much, was just me going out and watching DJs, listening to DJs, and wondering what they did and taking a lot of influence from what the really well-established people were doing.” Pulsford had previously learnt the trumpet before trying his hand on the decks but eventually became proficient with the piano, synthesising and the drums - a lot of which he puts into his own music.

Taking inspiration over the years from Melbourne-based DJs such as Dirty South, Olly Davis, Bec Grenfell, Steve Ward and Denis Sulta, Pulsford now bases most of his music around the genre of house music, particularly progressive house, while drawing influence from techno and disco. Even so, he says you can’t understate the importance of having lyrics in your set. “I’ve found that any track that you play live, it’s always twice as well received by the crowd if you have lyrics in it, so I’ll always mix in as much acapella as I can if songs don’t have lyrics,” he said. “It not only adds a bit of character to your mix, but it definitely gets the crowd a lot more engaged.” It was this style of music that landed him his biggest gig at Beyond The Valley last year, performing alongside a line-up that included FISHER, PNAU and Duke Dumont. “It was unreal. The best experience ever,” he told us. But Pulsford didn’t land the spot in the conventional way. “I had a friend who was pushing the ticket sales for the event and I had a whole lot of friends who wanted to come so I sold a few tickets for them as well. But then I got talking to a couple of the organisers there and eventually they offered me a pretty early slot; I believe it was the first slot on the very first day,” he recalls. “When I was there, I bumped into so many people and told them that I was so proud to be playing at this amazing event and it was a pretty surreal thing. It was the first set of the day on this really big stage and what turned out to be close to 200 to 300 of my friends - even those that I hadn’t even seen in such a long time - all rocked up just to show their support. “It was an amazing thing and definitely one of the highlights of my little hobby that’s now become one of my passions.” Pulsford is now doing his best to bring some of Melbourne’s top talent down to the Peninsula, as well as showcasing up-andcoming talent, with an event created by him and his mates called “Thunderground”. Originally starting out as Thunderdome Revival, the concept has quickly taken off in his hometown with 200 to 250 people consistently packing the venue. The most recent day-event sold out within sixteen hours of tickets being released. Pulsford has taken a backstep from his DJing to help run and promote Thunderground but says it really fills the gap in the music market. “There was a really strong lack of house/techno music on
the Mornington Peninsula,” he said. “There are a lot of commercial night clubs in Mornington, and other events that were really commercialised and aimed at younger people. We wanted to make a place where we can all listen to the music that we want to listen to, where we can listen to the artists that we’d otherwise have to go all the way up to the city to listen to and we said ‘Let’s start hosting events where we can bring them down here’. We started with that and it just became this big thing where there was obviously a lot of like-minded people who wanted to listen to the good music on the Peninsula and we’re now in a position to bring down good artists all the time.” Pulsford said while they wanted to get some top artists down to the Peninsula, there is still a very firm focus on supporting and showcasing new talent. “One of the biggest aims of our group is to promote Peninsula talent so we try and put people who can’t easily get an appearance into the spotlight by giving them the chance to play to a lot of people,” he said. “Giving them an opportunity to play for fun, not just because they sell tickets, is a really wholesome set up that we’ve got going at the moment. We’ve got a lot of grateful people and we’re creating a lot of opportunities that are leading to better things.” Pulsford will continue to dedicate a lot of his time to running ‘Thunderground’ but will still be gearing up for another massive summer festival season. He said: “I can’t confirm, but I’m definitely looking at a couple of big events which I’m incredibly excited about.” So keep a look out for the peninsula’s Samuel Pulsford in the coming months! om Putt, an award-winning local photographer, who opened his new gallery in Main Street, Mornington early this year, has just added to his awards at one of the most prestigious events of the year – the International Photography Awards.
Held at Carnegie Hall in New York on October 22nd, Tom was announced as Nature Photographer of the Year. Tom's series of aerial images captured in Iceland won first prize in the Nature Category. His image also won first place in the Nature Aerial/ Drone Series category. The International Photography Awards conducts an annual photography competition for professional, non-professional, and student photographers on a global level, creating one of the most ambitious and comprehensive competitions in the photography world today. The IPA recognizes photography’s leading talents who are creating, shaping and defining the world of photography.

Keum-boo is an ancient fusion technique used to apply thin sheets of 24 carat pure gold to pure silver. Not only is Monica’s work a fusion of precious metals, but her intricate work is also a synthesis of time, where the wisdom of ancient ancestors comes alive by her inspiration and creativity in her contemporary designs. Monica’s work is all handcrafted. “She produces quality pieces with an organic feel to them, and with an absolute commitment to excellence in craftmanship,” says Paul Minzenmay, third generation Master Jeweller. Monica’s inspirations are from elements found in the majestic beauty of the land and sea. “We found her unique take on the landscape around her and the inspirations behind her creative pieces to be so refreshing and offering something just that little bit different that is rare to find. F
rankston based storyteller and award-winning photographer Kelly McDonald has the magical ability to transform mortals into mythical beings, with a wave or two of her digital fairy wand.
A former kindergarten teacher, performance artist and a published author, Kelly started Garden Babies Fairy Art in 2013 and her work is now widely recognised. Garden Babies Fine Fairy Art and Photography is a magical studio in Seaford. Kelly welcomes families into her carefully curated space to capture unposed images using her own uniquely designed backdrops and sets. Although the real magic begins after the photography session when Kelly sprinkles her fine art fairy dust onto her clients’ selected images using digital software. This magical process transports people into fantasy scenes, where they become fairies, mermaids, dragon trainers, vintage paintings and unicorn riders.

Kelly’s unique art is self-taught. She came up with the concept when her children were little. “I had this idea. I wanted to mix my playful style of kinder teaching with my art and love of fairies and magic,” says Kelly. “But I also wanted a job that would fit around my primary role as a mother of two.” While overseas, Kelly taught herself the digital skills needed to craft her work. She then gave herself a few months, painting a backdrop and collecting props. Fast forward six years and Kelly has moved to a studio away from of home and earned multiple accolades for her work. Her most recent success was at the 2019 Style Pose Click Melbourne Event where she was awarded the Winner for Creativity in the “Find a Photographer Awards.” continued next page...
Kelly describes her work as picture storytelling. Clients are attracted to her unique style after following her work on social media or finding her online portfolio via her website. They then ask her to craft personalised imagery to match themes synonymous with Garden Babies Fine Art and Photography such as wizarding Potter-esque shoots, imagery inspired by vintage paintings, or magical Christmas scenes complete with Santa and his reindeer.

But adults also love being digitally transformed into mermaids, fairies and mythical beings. “I find that the ladies who do book in are empowered by the process,” says Kelly. “I don’t use Photoshop to manipulate features; instead I use shadow and lighting to enhance my subject’s attributes.” Nor or it just women who enjoy the transformations.“My bookings comprise of around 60% more boys than girls, mainly because there is nothing else out there like what I do.”
Since Kelly started Garden Babies Fine Fairy Art and Photography, other photographers have arrived on the scene offering similar packages. However, Kelly’s soft, whimsical, storytelling imagery remains consistently unique to her Fine Fairy Art style. The lead up to Christmas is her busiest time of the year. Not only because so many clients wish to gift their families with Kelly’s beautifully curated, personalised art but because she also volunteers at the Monash Hospital for the Christmas Wish Project. wonderful initiative captures children in hospital during a visit by Santa. Kelly and a group of other digital magical elves then work rapidly to visually transport images of these sick children to a magical land, away from hospital beds, monitors and IV lines. Kelly’s work is now so widely regarded, she is sometimes sent pre-captured images from afar to work her magic on. Some clients have also travelled long distances to work with her, because they have heard of Kelly’s reputation of being a playful, child-
friendly photographer. “I don’t say to children ‘Don’t touch anything.’ They are free to move around as much as they want to. My only rule is not to climb the ladder or touch the camera. It’s about the experience for the kids, the photos are the bonus.” Kelly’s Garden Babies Fine Fairy Art and Photography studio in Seaford is open every day, by appointment only. Clients receive approximately 200 digital images shared via a mobile phone app and choose their preferred images for Kelly to weave her magic on. ornington Art Show has signed up German-born sculptor Rudi Jass for its January Art show.
An exhibition of contemporary and indigenous art celebrating the coming of the first summer
In his Mornington Peninsula studio, Jaas designs and crafts sculptures characterised by clean-flowing lines and elegant forms. Working mostly in stainless steel, corten steel, and copper, his sculptures are often combined with accents of glass or stone. The pieces are all handmade in small or limited editions and are sought after by architects and landscape designers. Jass’s designs are displayed in small courtyards, gardens, balconies or amid modern architecture in urban and commercial developments. His kinetic sculptures move in the wind, adding movement to gardens or patios in seemingly random patterns. All works on display at the art show will be for sale. They will add another dimension to the paintings, photographs and glasswork also on display and for sale. The 48th annual art show, one of the largest in Victoria, has its opening night on Thursday 16 January. It will then open daily 10 am-5pm at Peninsula Community Theatre, corner Nepean Highway and Wilsons Road, Mornington. All proceeds of the art show will support Mornington Rotary’s program of local and international humanitarian projects. Entries are now being received by artists via the Gallery 247 site.

etailed paintings of the flora used in traditional Aboriginal medicine and evocative paintings of the ‘Seven Sisters’ dreaming story feature in Everywhen Artspace’s Christmas exhibition in December. “Some years ago, the artists of the Ampilatwatja community about 230 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs made the decision to paint in quite a different style to other Aboriginal artists of the region by depicting, as they describe it, 'The countries on which the dreaming stories sit,'” says Everywhen co-curator Susan McCulloch. “Their work is characterised by views of the land marked out in the finest of dot painting and using a rich palette of colour.” The style is exemplified in the work of younger generation artist Kathleen Rambler whose paintings are notable for their jewellike colours and fine detail of fauna and flora in paintings that simultaneously encompass a sweeping perspective of land and sky. A similarly grand perspective, but of one particular story, are the 'Seven Sisters' paintings by two leading younger generation artists Athena Nangala Granites and Shanna Napanangka Williams from Warlukurlangu Aboriginal Artists of Yuendumu, some 250k northwest of Alice Springs. The 'Seven Sisters', says McCulloch, is a very extensive Aboriginal mythology which relates the journey of seven ancestral sisters and is known in Aboriginal societies from the south of Australia to the most northerly regions. In many versions of the story, the sisters are chased by a man who wishes to abduct one, or all of the sisters who eventually escape by flying up to the sky to form the 'Seven Sisters' or Pleiades cluster of stars. As the Pleiades is seen from just about every part of the world, there are strong mythological stories that similarly depict this star
cluster as seven sisters in many different cultures including those of ancient Greece, Druid, Native American, Hindu, Polynesian and Japanese. For the Warlpiri people of Yuendumu, the 'Seven Sisters' is painted by women of the same skin group as the sisters. The morning star, Venus, is believed to be a man from another group who is often portrayed in paintings as a single large star chasing the sisters across the night sky. Opening the exhibition of these and other new paintings, ochres, barks and sculptures on December 7 is a unique Art Parade presentation of 50+ works of Aboriginal art. Also featured for Christmas is a wide variety of small carvings, hand–painted metal dogs and licensed design homewares and other items – the sale of which both supports Aboriginal communities and makes for unusual Christmas gifts. Upcoming at Everywhen in January is a Summer Collector’s Show of Aboriginal art from around Australia, featuring a selection of works from the McCulloch Collection of Contemporary Aboriginal Art. MACBETH AT CRITTENDEN After the success of last year’s sell–out Shakespeare in the Vines experience, Crittenden Estate is hosting another fun–filled event, again performed by the renowned performance company, Essential Theatre. This year things will be taking a darker turn with the dramatic performance at Crittenden Estate of Macbeth. Crittenden Estate is constantly evolving with the philosophy of bringing fine food, wine and entertainment to the beloved Mornington Peninsula. The cast of eight professional actors will take you on the thrilling and dark journey that is Macbeth. Tempted by the prophecies of three mysterious witches, and encouraged by his power–hungry wife, Macbeth will do anything to be King. Garry Crittenden planted some of the first vines on the peninsula back in 1982. In fact the five acres he planted then doubled the peninsula’s entire planting at the time. With 11 acres under vine, Crittenden Estate is not the largest producer of wine on the peninsula. But in terms of quality, they are second to none. The sustainable management of the vineyard that has been imperative in the Crittenden’s processes for the last 15 years has vastly improved the quality of the soil and in turn the fruit and wine. Described by James Halliday as an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality, Crittenden Estate was yet again awarded Halliday’s highest rating of five red stars in the 2020 Halliday Wine Companion. With the family being from a Danish background, the name translates directly from Danish to English; Tre is Three and And is Duck. "The Tre represents the three dams on the property as well as the three generations in our family who are involved,” said Line. The menu is seasonal and is always changing - showcasing the best fresh produce from the local farms nearby. They started making their products on a 15-acre property on the banks of the Gunbower Creek, in the far north of Victoria, Australia. Owners, Andy and Jude Steele, planted a large grove of some 2000 olive trees and within five years the trees were producing superior quality olives in large volume. That’s when Jude began making olive oil soap right there on the farm. More than 10 years later Jude and Andy, and now their daughter Sarah, are running an award-winning business based on their own recipes of olive oil skin care products. 'GINSECCO' IS SET TO HIT AUSTRALIA THIS SUMMER A ‘come back’ for sparkling wine cocktails. An old-fashioned favourite is making a ‘come back’ but this time with flavoured gin rather than fruit schnapps. ‘Ginsecco’ – which combines flavoured gin and your favourite sparkling wine - utterly delicious. The Sanctuary has become an ark for endangered creatures, and a showcase of their unique beauty. At night, Moonlit Sanctuary comes alive with its world-famous lantern-lit tours. Night birds are active, tiny feathertail gliders and giant yellowbellied gliders swoop around, and endangered quolls, pademelons and bettongs forage for food. Groups for Night Tours are kept small and intimate and take 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete. Tours begin between 7pm and 8:30pm depending on the time of sunset and must be booked in advance. LE PUY CAMINO A Classic Pilgrim Route Through Southwest France If you like the idea of a romantic walk and a certain level of solitude, France’s Via Podiensis (Le Puy Camino) might be just what you’re looking for. The oh-so-quiet and stunningly beautiful trail through rural France offers endless hours of glorious walking under big blue skies on winding forest tracks, through rolling countryside exploding with vivid red poppies and waving fields of wheat. The landscape allows plenty of time and space for contemplation. From there, it merges with the Camino Francés (the most popular of all the Camino routes) and extends another 780km to Santiago in Spain. RISING FROM THE Ashes A
ward-winning Mornington Peninsula winery and fine dining restaurant Ten Minutes by Tractor (TMBT) reopened the doors to their restaurant in November following a lengthy absence from the regional Victorian dining scene. The much-anticipated opening comes nineteen months after a significant fire forced owners Martin and Karen Spedding to close their beloved venue after twelve years of service and rebuild.
Executive Chef Adam Sanderson will be leading the charge in the kitchen. With 22 years’ of experience under his belt including time at The Fat Duck (Brae, UK), Gary Rhodes (London, UK), Noma (Copenhagen, Denmark), and more locally Cutler & Co and Bistro Guillaume, Adam will bring a fresh approach to the five and eight course degustation, and à la carte menus, drawing inspiration from produce that is grown on the Mornington Peninsula.
The refreshed restaurant building features a new kitchen, chef ’s table, private dining room and outdoor terrace. A new cellar door and wine gallery space are also due to be opened on the same site in early December, and next year respectively.
“It’s important the menu is attractive, fun, stimulates people’s senses, focuses on the highest quality local produce and i,s above all, honest in its approach,” said Sanderson.
Driven by their unequivocal passion for fine wine and food, and a determination to take the offering to a whole new level, Martin, Karen and the TMBT team are excited to open a reimagined restaurant space created within what was the original apple orchard cottage on the property.
“Our menus will reflect what is available seasonally week to week from our local farmers and producers with whom we work very closely and continuously to build and grow strong relationships. We will also reach out and source produce from wider areas throughout Australia.

“Our kitchen team forage and gather from the coastline, the rolling hills, and our kitchen garden in Main Ridge, which gives us the opportunity to discuss and generate ideas for dishes and continually evolve our menu. “Although what we cook in the restaurant will always be heavily inspired by our region, we will not limit ourselves,” said Sanderson. Examples of dishes you may find at Ten Minutes by Tractor include kangaroo en croûte, caramelised cauliflower, black cherry, and grilled greens; slow cooked Bundarra pork belly and loin, smoked eel, kohlrabi, elderflower, green mizuna; roast Eugowra quail, blueberry, beetroot, sickle pod, liquorice; and to finish, fresh peas, compressed cucumber, buttermilk ice cream with green pine cone. The new menu will be served by a highly experienced front of house team, overseen by Restaurant Manager Jacques Savary de Beauregard, ex Home House and the Cinnamon Club (London, UK). Jacques, an advanced member of the Court of Master Sommeliers, joined the Ten Minutes by Tractor team for a brief summer stint six years ago, and never left. The re-imagined restaurant space will have the same aspect as the original and has almost been completely rebuilt. Notable features include, increased seating (30 additional) and a multitude of dining spaces; the main restaurant, a private dining room seating 24, a six-seater chef ’s table, plus a new outdoor terrace to enjoy the vineyard views. The fit out, designed by COX Architecture, features vertical timber touches, stone, olive suede banquets, hints of brass, a black spiral staircase to the new wine cellar, and a solid oak dining table in the private dining room designed by renowned Melbourne craftsman Damian Wright. F
rank Fabrizio, owner of Red Hill Estate, likes to walk the vineyards, taste every varietal and have a hand in when the grapes are picked because at RHE estate they do things the old-fashioned way. They decide when to pick based on taste rather than relying solely on science and numbers. Frank works closely with his winemakers and is hands-on in every aspect of his business because he loves it. From the spectacular views across the vineyards, to the many characters of the wines produced, to his clever staff, he loves it all. “I was very excited the first time I came through the gates. I knew this was where I wanted to be working,� he says.

In 2012 Fabrizio purchased a large wine business called Cheviot Bridge. It just so happened that Red Hill Estate sat inside that larger company; so naturally, he wanted to see the property. Although he didn't actually visit the cellar door until 2014, it was a visit that changed everything. That year RHE won the blue gold medal for best Pinot vintage in the International Pinot Cool Climate Wine Show. No stranger to the business side of things, Fabrizio's been in the wine industry for over 30 years. Originally, he was in the fruit and vegetable business, but when a friend who owned a vineyard in the Hunter Valley asked if Frank could help him out, he fell in love with winemaking. He quickly moved from sales and marketing to tending the vines. He’s never looked back. From that original job, he moved on to a larger scale business in the Hunter Valley. He spent five years there before getting the opportunity to work in California’s Central Coast region, where he spent the next seven years. This was where Frank’s passion for Pinots began, as the Central Coast, like the Mornington Peninsula, is a cool climate region.

Cool climate is all about elevation and temperature. Grapes take more time to ripen on the vine, but this results in more layers and greater complexity in the wines. The Peninsula is internationally recognized as a cool climate region, but even within it, many individual microclimates exist. This is how the vineyards are able to produce such a fine variety of wines. It’s not just the climate that produces great wine. Judicious pruning and tasting are critical to the flavours produced in each varietal. At RHE, bunches are kept small so they get the most goodness and best flavour from each bunch. This translates to more flavour in the bottle.

Because RHE has vines that sit within a few different microclimates, they have choices and can produce wines that are very distinct to RHE’s style. Some blocks are better than others, but because of their approach to winemaking, they get good results from all of their vines. Their working philosophy is that winemakers can’t make flavour; grapes make the flavour. However winemakers influence the journey from vineyard to glass. Each winemaker has an individual style, but Frank still supervises and has the final say in what ends up in the bottle. Using 100% barrels over stainless steel vats, careful tending of the vines, and great vineyard location are further the secrets to their success. Frank thinks the best out-of-the-bottle are their Single Vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Those are the two main varietals on the Mornington Peninsula, but he believes Red Hill Estate’s are particularly good.
Because of his close connection to the business, Frank’s wish is that Red Hill Estate always stays in his family. This seems pretty likely as his daughter currently works at the vineyard and even his seven- year old granddaughter has a keen interest in her Nonno’s business. Red Hill Estate is a great place to visit. The view is exceptional. Patrons can have a glass at the cellar door and/or take home a bottle or two knowing that every aspect of that wine’s production has been carefully considered. The Pig and Whistle I
t is not surprising that Joel Wroblewski has grabbed with both hands the head chef role at Main Ridge’s The Pig and Whistle. He started his career at one of Australia’s iconic pubs, the Lorne Hotel, and has mastered pub-style cooking throughout a long cooking journey.
The 34-year-old left school to take up a chef apprenticeship at Lorne and worked there until he moved to Hervey Bay for four years.
While living and working on the peninsula, Joel met James McPherson. “Back then, James was running Three Palms in Sorrento,” said Joel. “It was a great team of people, doing great work in the fine dining area. “I worked with James for about four years; first as sous chef, and then taking on the head chef role.”
After that it was back to Lorne for a couple of years before making the jump across to the peninsula.
After leaving Three Palms, Joel worked at various venues across the peninsula, honing his craft.
“I had friends on the peninsula running a seafood tavern, so I decided to make the change,” said Joel.
“The food scene is really great on the peninsula. Working at various venues taught me so much”.

When James McPherson and Luke Milroy took over the management of The Pig and Whistle, they called Joel to get him on board. “It was really great, as it was getting the old Three Palms team back together,” said Joel. When Joel arrived, he worked under the existing chef to learn the “English pub-style cooking” that The Pig and Whistle was renowned for.
“Pair that with specialty ales, and a setting second to none, with panoramic views across the peninsula, and you’ve got a fantastic venue.” When Joel isn’t working, he enjoys everything the peninsula has to offer. “I must admit, I do enjoy going out for a wine, and a nice meal,” said Joel.
“He was fantastic, and I really enjoy the style of cooking we get to do at The Pig and Whistle”.
“But it really isn’t to dissect what other chefs are doing. It is just nice to have someone cook for me for a change!”
Joel likes the fast pace of pub-style cooking with hearty dishes that are measured differently to fine dining.
Joel has been at The Pig & Whistle for a year now and sees great things ahead.
“It is very different from fine dining, and thoroughly enjoyable,” said Joel.
“Right now, I just have my head down, and am working hard, and moving the kitchen forward.”
“We have a fantastic venue that is family friendly with trampolines out the back, a big open fire, and happy people talking and enjoying fantastic pub-style food.”

GUINNESS PIE (Serves 4-6) Ingredients
Method
• 750g beef brisket, diced
1. Place the diced brisket in a container and cover with Guinness for 12 hours.
• 1 onion, chopped
2. Heat the oil in a large casserole pan. Cook the brisket, in 2 batches, for 7 – 10mins until browned all over. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook for 5mins until soft.
• 2 tbsp corn flour • 1 x 440ml can Guinness or other stout • sprig thyme leaves • sprig parsley leaves
3. Then return the brisket to the pan with the thyme, parsley and Guinness. and stir around the pan scraping up all the caramelised bits at the bottom of the pan.
• 2 cloves garlic, sliced • 3 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 tbsp hot English mustard
4. Simmer for 2 hours until the beef is tender.
• 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 1 x 375g ready-rolled shortcrust pastry • 1 egg yolk, beaten
5. Add Worcestershire sauce, hot English mustard and corn flour.
7. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C. Spoon the beef and enough juice to cover it, into a large pie dish. 8. Place the pastry on top and cut away any excess with a sharp knife. Then use your fingers to crimp around the edge of the pie. Make a small slit in the centre of the pie for air to escape. Brush all over with the egg. 9. Cook for 30–40 minutes until golden and crisp. Heat any remaining beef liquid and serve alongside with creamy mash and greens.

Balnarring
Balnarring is situated on the Mornington Peninsula, about ten kilometres south-west of the major centre of Hastings and fronting Western Port. It is 69 km from Melbourne. The median house price for Balnarring is $860,000 and median rent is $550 per week. The population of the Balnarring area in 2016 was 4870 (including Balnarring, Merricks, and Somers). Balnarring's shopping village is located two kilometres inland and includes a supermarket and a good selection of speciality shops. The shopping village is built around a large central car park which is surrounded by trees and gardens.
Just to the east of Balnarring on the coast in neighboring Somers are the Coolart Wetlands. This nature reserve surrounds the historical Coolart Homestead which was built in 1895, and includes a lagoon where thousands of Australian white ibis nest every year, plus attractive picnic and BBQ areas. The railway station in Balnarring opened on 2 December 1921 but, like its Red Hill branch line, was relatively short-lived, officially closing on 29 June 1953. However, it was kept in service for annual local events until about 10 years after the closure.
The Balbirooroo Community Wetlands border the commercial centre, and include a lagoon and walking trails.
Balnarring is an Aboriginal word meaning "camp in open places".
Balnarring Beach, also known as Tulum Beach, features sweeping crescents of coastline and a foreshore reserve which offers safe swimming along sandy stretches of the coast. Racehorses are trained on the beach early in the morning six days a week.
In the summer months, Balnarring Beach comes alive with holiday makers. It first became a holiday destination back in 1910 for day trippers from Melbourne. Back then, there were many beach stores and kiosks. Today there is one general store at the beach.
Balnarring Beach holds the award for the "Cleanest Beach in Victoria" from the Keep Australia Beautiful committee.
Today, Balnarring is a thriving community with a great local shopping centre. Balnarring Beach caters to the holiday makers with caravan parks and camping grounds and the local area has many excellent wineries.
Merricks Creek joins Western Port at Balnarring, forming a narrow peninsula of land which is traversed by walking paths and footbridges around the shallow creek. One of the most scenic parts of Balnarring Beach is around Cliff Road which is situated on a bushy headland. A walking track winds its way down the cliff face to the sandy beach below, offering spectacular views along the coast.

Balnarring is also home to The Emu Plains Racecourse and Recreational Reserve. The racecourse provides a range of recreational activities including a community market and picnic race meetings run by The Balnarring Picnic Racing Club, a non-profit organisation committed to promoting picnic racing as an enjoyable and family-orientated activity.

Don Charlwood – the Frankston Connection By Peter McCullough
I
f a poll was taken to determine Frankston's favourite son, author Don Charlwood would have to be a strong contender. The fact that the café at the Frankston Library is called the 'Charlwood Café' would tend to support that view. However his family tree contains at least two other members who made significant contributions in their respective fields: his grandfather (John Cameron) was something of an entrepreneur in the early days of Frankston, and an uncle (John Alexander 'Joker' Cameron) served as a Farrier Sergeant in the Boer War and on return played VFL football with South Melbourne. Their stories were just too compelling to ignore so the Don Charlwood story starts with a brief pen portrait of these two ancestors. *** John Cameron “Veterinary surgeon, coach builder, implement maker, blacksmith, trimmer, painter.” So ran the advertisement in the first Standard newspaper on 5 October, 1889. It showed that the early community of Frankston had to be ready to tackle anything. John Cameron, son of John and Mary Cameron, was born in 1843 in a small Scottish highland village below Ben Nevis. He was still a very young boy when his father died and his mother remarried; with her new husband and three children she set sail for Australia. They arrived in Melbourne in 1850 and were met by Angus Cameron, John's uncle, who had a farm at Moonee Ponds. They were also welcomed by another uncle, Donald Cameron, who was farming and horse breeding on 650 acres at Craigieburn. When he arrived in Melbourne John could only speak Gaelic. At that time there were many Gaelic-speaking settlers in the colony. With the formation of the Presbytery of Melbourne in 1842 concern was expressed for the welfare of these groups, and the Free Presbyterian Church opened the Free Presbyterian Chalmers

Academy. John was sent to school there and he came proficient in the 'Sassenach' tongue (English), although he always spoke with a strong Scottish accent. On 26 January, 1864, aged 21, John bought 39.5 acres at Craigieburn, next to his uncle. His neighbour on the other side was John Williamson whose brother-in-law was John Davey, an early pioneer settler of Frankston. John Cameron was told that there was an opening for a blacksmith in Frankston, and he subsequently took over the building and business from the existing blacksmith, Robin Thomson. He later married Annie Warden from Liverpool and they had three sons and five daughters. In 1861 Cobb and Co. had started a service between Brighton and Mornington with a stop-over to change horses in Frankston; the cost was six shillings for one way. John Cameron looked after the shoeing of these horses, plus those of a daily coach which ran from Hastings to Frankston to catch the ferry to Melbourne. As all the roads on the peninsula at that time met in Frankston, John had a very good business going; he had just arrived in the town when the upsurge in traffic took place. In 1882 he built new premises and a new house on Bay Street (Nepean Highway) which he called 'Ben Nevis'. By 1889 he had opened his coach-building premises and was employing eight to twelve men. In the first five years of his business in Frankston the Licensing Court of Mornington granted a large number of licences, many of them to the Frankston Fish Company, for the use of road vehicles. Spending many years looking after horses and being called on to undertake veterinary tasks, John Cameron decided to become a qualified veterinarian. He was fully qualified by 1889 and thus became Frankston's first vet. A decade later, in 1899, he died at his home 'Ben Nevis' at the early age of 56. First his widow, Annie, and then his second son, Hugh, carried on the Frankston Coach Factory until the arrival of the motor car. Hugh then became the first man in Frankston to advertise as 'motor mechanic'. John Alexander Cameron When the war broke out in South Africa the third son of John and Annie, John Junior, known universally as 'Joker', was working as a blacksmith with his brother, Hugh. Although only 17, he was convinced by an overly-patriotic older sister that he should put his age up to 18 and enlist. While his place was obviously at home with his brother, keeping the family business alive, 'Joker', an outstanding physical specimen, responded to his sister's challenge. “Selection for the 4th Victorian Imperial Bushmen was highly competitive; only 750 men were needed; 4,000 applied in a matter of days. As Australia was at a high point of intoxication with Empire, the response in other capital cities was much the same. A stringent

medical examination was followed by riding tests over a half-mile course of jumps set up in the Melbourne Domain; thousands went there each day to watch. Musketry tests followed at the Williamstown rifle range. A high level of bushmanship was demanded. The tests whittled the 4,000 to 853 all of whom entered camp at the Langwarrin military reserve near Frankston." Charlwood, Don “Marching as to War”, Hudson, Hawthorn, 1990, Page 28. On 1 May, 1900 Cameron sailed as a member of the Bushmen and subsequently served as a farrier in Rhodesia, Transvaal and Cape Colony, attaining the rank of Farrier/Sergeant. His duties were not limited to blacksmithing, however. “In South Africa, 'Joker' seems to have acted in typically Australian fashion. Since the government had economised by providing inferior saddles, he appropriated a better one from the horse of an English officer. And from somewhere he acquired a Boer pony. was such that he dropped his uniform into the sea as soon as the ship entered Port Phillip Bay and he flung his medals into Kananook Creek. He swore that he would never go to war again and consequently when war broke out in 1914 'Joker' resisted any pressure to enlist. On his return from South Africa John Cameron resumed playing Australian Rules football with Frankston before going on to play with South Melbourne between 1903-1911. He played 117 games and kicked 43 goals for the Swans. The 'Encyclopedia of League Footballers' by Jim Main and Russell Holmesby states: “A follower/ defender, Cameron was a cool and clever ball player. He was a sure kick and could give and take hard knocks and knew every trick in the book. Cameron once told a teammate to stagger around and appear to be concussed after an incident to avoid being reported. The antic failed. Cameron played in South's 1909 premiership side.� (Page 51, 1992 edition) In fact, the Swans defeated Carlton by two points with 'Joker' Cameron listed as one of the best players. When football resumed on the Mornington Peninsula after World War One, 'Joker' Cameron was coaxed out of retirement even though he was 38 years old. He soon became one of Frankston's best players again and was a member of their 1919 premiership team. He played spasmodically over the next few years, making his last appearance in 1922 as a 41 year old. 'Joker' Cameron became vicepresident of Frankston Football Club and was a league delegate. In 2008, he was named in the MPFL Team of the Century. By 1928 Cameron had obviously mellowed for he was successful in his application for a Soldier Settlement block at Morkalla in the north-west corner of the Mallee. Donald Ernest Cameron Charlwood Don Charlwood was born in Hawthorn on 6 September, 1915. His mother, Emily, was the youngest daughter of John and Annie Cameron; accordingly, the family moved to Frankston when Don was eight and it was there that he completed his schooling in 1932. In 1929 Don's history teacher at Frankston High School asked him to write a history of the town. His mother, who had grown up in Frankston, drew up a list of senior residents of the town and he set off to interview them. The resulting oral history led to an award on Speech Day and it was published in installments in the Frankston Standard. Don Charlwood, just 14, was already investing his imagination in the Frankston of that era and even today his effort is a source frequently turned to by writers of local history. As his school days drew to a close Charlwood decided that he wanted to be a writer and even approached Keith Murdoch who lived nearby on his property Cruden Farm. Only the distant possibility of a job as a messenger boy resulted and consequently he took a job with a local firm of auctioneers and estate agents. His pay was 15 shillings a week and he was required to collect rental from unfortunate people who could hardly spare the money. As his 18th birthday approached he was given the task of training an assistant, not realizing that it was his own replacement as his wage was about to rise to 22 shillings and 6 pence. Finding himself unemployed Charlwood decided to take a holiday on the farm of a distant cousin: 'Burnside', near Nareen in the Western District. He travelled via Cape Otway, seeking the place where his grandmother and great-grandmother were shipwrecked in 1855 on the sailing ship 'Schomberg.' Charlwood found farm life enjoyable and was invited to stay on to help with the shearing and harvest of 1934. In fact he remained at 'Burnside' for the rest of the 1930's; he was already writing and occasionally supplemented his wages by selling articles and short stories.

With the outbreak of war, Charlwood enlisted in the RAAF in 1940.After being placed on the reserve for eleven months he was posted to Somers, then to Canada to undertake training as a bomb aimer/navigator under the Empire Air Training Scheme. Six months, a number of courses and stations, and around 160 hours of flying time later, the initial training course was complete. While the training was arduous, Charlwood had the good fortune to meet a young primary school teacher named Nell East in Edmonton. In England Charlwood was placed in a crew piloted by a West Australian named Geoff Maddern and, after completing an intensive training course, they were posted to No. 103 Squadron RAF, Elsham Wolds, in Lincolnshire. Shortly after their arrival the squadron converted from Halifaxes to Lancasters and Madden's crew flew most of their tour of 30 operations in the latter type of aircraft in the winter of 1942-43. On one of his first sorties, a mining operation in the Baltic, Charlwood's aircraft was badly damaged by anti-aircraft fire over Denmark. As the pace of operations increased, Maddern and his crew attacked many major industrial cities including Turin, Munich, Essen, and Berlin. Opposition was intense, and on almost every occasion at least one crew from No. 103 Squadron failed to return. Over Wilhelmshaven a fighter attacked Maddern's Lancaster and was beaten off by his gunners. A few nights later he and his crew met intense anti-aircraft fire over Bremen and the wireless operator was badly wounded. March 1943 saw the start of the Battle of the Ruhr. With the aid of the newly-created Pathfinder Force, bombing accuracy improved, and Maddern flew to Essen, when his aircraft was again attacked by fighters, and to Berlin and Kiel. It was a period of very heavy losses and Maddern's crew became the first of No. 103 Squadron in nine months to complete a tour of 30 operational sorties. On 7 April he and his crew flew their final operation with Duisburg as the target. In his later writings Charlwood revealed that, of the 20 men who had qualified as navigators in his course, only 5 were alive at the end of the war. In two of his books, 'No Moon Tonight' and 'Journey into Night' Charlwood described his own experience and chronicled the fate of his friends. His vivid, moving records of these months are among the finest autobiographical works on Bomber Command and 'No Moon Tonight' has been compared favourably with 'The Dam Busters', the classic by another Australian writer, Paul Brickhill. continued next page...

Another critic has compared Charlwood's work with the enduring memories of World War 1 such as Remarque's 'All Quiet on the Western Front.' The success of his other works notwithstanding, 'No Moon Tonight' remained Charlwood's favourite as it was “a book of sorrow and companionship.� The extract quoted below reflects his response when, soon after his arrival at Elsham Wolds, two of his friends went missing. With his tour complete, Charlton left England for the United States and training on Liberators, but back problems ended his flying career. Before returning to Australia he travelled to Edmonton and married Nell, the young teacher that he had met during his training. They were fortunate enough to be able to travel to Australia together. After the war Charlwood worked for thirty years with the Department of Civil Aviation in Air Traffic Control, first at Melbourne Airport, then as a selector of men for ATC training; this was work that took him around Australia and New Guinea many times, and also to Britain, Canada, and New Zealand. His book 'Takeoff to Touchdown' is subtitled 'The Story of Traffic Control'. Several of his aeronautical short stories appear in the collection 'Flight and Time.' During the post-war years Charlwood wrote eleven books. Two of these, 'Marching as to War' and 'Journeys into Night', were autobiographical and his collection of short stories 'An Afternoon of Time' is based on notes taken during his Nareen years. Proximity to the Shipwreck Coast during that time, plus the family connection with the loss of the 'Schomberg' in 1855, led to an interest in these events and 'The Wreck of the Loch Ard' and 'Wrecks and Reputations' were the result. 'The Long Farewell' was based primarily on diaries kept by emigrants on their lengthy and perilous journeys during the great European (Irish, English, Scots) waves of immigration that saw more than 980,000 settlers arrive in time to be counted in the Great Census of 1881. memories of Charlwood's 'All the Green Year' which was a regular feature of the English curriculum at secondary school level for over two decades and was subsequently made into a popular television series. Set in 1929 in 'Kananook', 'All the Green Year' is a perceptive observation of Australian childhood of that era. It sold more than 100,000 copies and was republished in recent years as part of a series of Australian classics. Quite an achievement considering Charlwood's grandfather could not speak English when he arrived in Australia! Although 'All the Green Year' purports to be a novel, there is little doubt that the Charlie Reeve growing up in Kananook is the author recalling his school days in Frankston. Who could forget Charlie's account of how he and his mate Squid 'borrowed' the camel from Perry Brothers circus and headed for the school? Squid 'bailed out', leaving Charlie to continue the journey into the school ground as depicted in the extract below. Don Charlwood became Vice President of the Victorian Branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers in 1975 and held the position for fifteen years. He was awarded an OAM in 1992 in recognition of his service to literature. Don and Nell had four children (Jan, Sue, Doreen and James) and lived in Melbourne in their retirement. Don Charlwood died at Wantirna on 18 June 2012 at the age of 96. For many years Charlwood had been an active advocate for a memorial to the 55,500 men who died in Bomber Command, and he asked a friend to represent him at the dedication by the Queen of the Bomber Command Memorial in London. Don Charlwood died ten days before the ceremony. Opposite me Andy Stubbs was already awake, but silent. ‘No word of them?’ He shook his head and lay staring at the ceiling. ‘Bull’ was awake too. The roar had gone from his voice. I slid miserably to the ground. A murmur passed through the tradespeople. This heralded the arrival of my father from his office. I felt a moment of deepened shame, remembering his sleepless nights and the worry at home. I heard him exclaim, ”What’s the meaning of this?”
“Alone I looked down the main street. Already horses were rearing up and men were trying to quieten them. I huddled miserably behind the neck of the camel. Outside the Pier Hotel I saw old Charlie Rolls fall on his knees at the edge of the gutter and assume an attitude of prayer. Ahead of me, lining the centre of the road, were loaves of bread. The baker’s cart, with its door open, was travelling fast about a furlong in front of me. The camel advanced relentlessly, only pausing at Sam Yick’s to eat most of Sam’s display of Jonathans. This journey through the town was one of the most depressing events of my childhood. Several tradespeople began pursuing us on foot, and the camel, by some fearful instinct, headed towards the school-in fact its last act was to eat the top off old Moloney’s liquidamber. This brought everyone tumbling out of the classrooms, while behind me were the ranks of the tradespeople. There were cries of, “Mr Moloney, Charlie Reeve has come to school on a camel.” Moloney burst out of his office and

I waved my hand in the direction of the camel in a way intended to be explanatory. My father said coldly, “Mr Moloney, I will leave him to you. I shall see him myself tonight.”
strode through the ranks, his face unbelievable. “So you ride to school on a camel, Reeve? By heavens, when I’ve finished with you, you will stand in the stirrups for a week! Get off that animal immediately!” My voice came from a long way off. “It kicks, sir.”
With that he turned and strode away, looking neither right nor left, as if he had been caught in the street in his underpants. I was frog-marched then through the ranks of spectators, Mr. Moloney breathing viciously in my ear.
