Tropical winds EDP Renováveis Brazil opens new headquarters, investing in the tropical winds of the emerging Brazilian wind market

A

t the end of October, EDP Renováveis Brazil took a significant and important step towards growing and continuing to be a player in the Brazilian market. In São Paulo, at 5 p.m. the 27th of October, the company officially opened its new headquarters on the 17th floor of the modern building next to EDP's Brazilian headquarters in the Itaim Bibi district of São Paulo. EDP Renováveis Brazil and its team of 23 professionals from different backgrounds will now operate from this location. In this new environment the company assumes its own identity and will take part in the growing Brazilian wind market. With this spirit of collaboration among employees, Ana Maria Fernandes, CEO of EDP Renováveis, appeared at the opening of the office and celebrated the promising renewable energy sector with attendees. “I am very happy about the new facilities. This is a very important step in ensuring the satisfaction of employees. This is time to seek new advances, ambitious projects and to simulate the growing opportunities in Brazil”, says Ana Maria Fernandes 6 on

Ana Maria Fernandes also emphasized that EDP Renováveis is an important arm of Grupo EDP, with strong strategic investment. “We want to be a model in this area through a team that handles all projects with efficiency and excellence. The only way for us to be successful is to have the best professionals in the company who share EDP’s values.” The Brazilian team is headed by Renato Volponi, EDP Renováveis Brazil Country Manager. The engineer began his career at the Group in 2001 as the manager of Risk Studies and Risk Modeling at EDP Brazil Power Supply Company. He then became the director of this area in 2003. During this period, Volponi assembled a strong portfolio in seeking to serve utility clients in the states of São Paulo and Espírito Santo. These efforts, along with his team's commitment, enabled the EDP Power Supply Company to become the third largest in the Brazilian market, a ranking it still maintains. In July of this year, Volponi took over the helm of EDP Renováveis Brazil. “Issues related to renewable energy have always attracted me. This is

a segment that is growing rapidly in this country.” Another relevant reason for the move was his confidence in a team that is poised to take on major challenges and opportunities. The outlook for the Brazilian wind energy market is promising. Wind energy generation capacity in Brazil grew by 77.7% in 2009 compared to the previous year. Consequently, the country now has installed capacity of 606 megawatts (MW), versus 341 MW in 2008. In 2010, the pace of growth continues. In two accounts, the sector demonstrated its ability to compete with other traditional sources, highlighting the Brazilian electrical power sector's shift towards renewables and sustainability. In search of renewable sources, various companies in the Brazilian electrical power sector are seeking a share of this market. Companies are cooperating despite the competition, Volponi said. “Brazil has excellent wind capacity that is very well accepted by the market. With technological efficiency and without harming the environment, we are investing in innovation to find new renewable sources. According to Luís Adão da Fonseca, CBDO of EDP Renováveis, Brazil is one of the most important global markets for EDP Renováveis. “Brazil has great medium- and long-term potential. It is a market with a lot of room to grow, like other countries where EDP Renováveis currently operates.” Volponi notes that the national market and the wind community have received EDP Renováveis Brazil with open arms, since they recognize the company’s experience in the construction of wind farms in various countries. “The EDP brand is loved and respected in the Brazilian market. It is a company that delivers what it promises. EDP Renováveis Brazil leverages and reinforces this image.” The Brazilian wind sector is experiencing a unique period by carving out its own space with government support, large investors and favorable regions. “The market now understands that wind power complements hydropower sources and will add value to existing sources.” According to data from Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (EPE), installed electrical capacity in the country is 107,000 MW, including 70.23% from hydroelectricity; 24.18% from thermoelectricity; 2.85% from small hydroelectric plants (SHP); 1.86% from nuclear plants; 0.71% from wind; and 0,17% from power plants under 1 MW. on 9

Tramandaí Park

Of this total, 45% of the existing Brazilian power grid comes from renewable sources, primarily biomass and hydroelectricity. António Pita de Abreu, Chairman of EDP in Brazil, believes that the world is moving toward broader use of clean energies and that EDP Renováveis has an important role on this new global stage. “The new office reflects EDP’s growth in Brazil, which is relevant to the market.” Tramandaí Wind Farm

Covering 8,514,876 km2, Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world. It has 7,367 km of coastline 10 on

on the Atlantic Ocean. This large area is the basis for the accelerated growth of wind farms dotting the Brazilian countryside. EDP Renováveis Brazil currently has two farms operating and another under construction in the southern Brazilian states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, respectively. With an installed capacity of 9 MW and 12 Wind Generation Units, UEE (Usina Eolica Electrica - Wind Energy Plant (UEE)) Água Doce, in the city of Água Doce/SC, began operating in September 2006. Operating since 2004, UEE Horizonte, built in the same city,

operates six Wind Generation Units with installed capacity of 4.80 MW. However, in March 2010, EDP Renováveis Brazil broke ground on a ambitious and technological wind farm in Tramandaí in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. “The park is being built in record time to observe and follow all safety and sustainable responsibility rules. Construction marks the beginning of the company’s new standard model for development, construction, delivery and production of clean energy,” Volponi reports.

The entire space comprises 400 m2 with its own infrastructure. The office addresses sustainability issues with programmable climate control.

Expected to commence operations in early 2011, the Tramandaí Wind Farm has a installed capacity of 70 MW and estimated production of 211,437 MWh per year, enough to supply a city of 200,000 inhabitants. All told, 31 towers nearly 100 meters tall with 40-meter blades have emerged across the landscape of Rio Grande do Sul. The company is exploring new construction in the northeast and south of the country, where viable sites have been identified for delivery of clean energy to the Brazilian grid. Global Standards

As the business of EDP Renováveis Brazil progresses in Brazil, the team at the company's new headquarters in São Paulo follows the global standards of EDP Renováveis and enjoys the benefits provided by the Corporate Services Spain team, together with the Infrastructure, Information Technology, Brand and Communications areas of EDP in Brazil. The entire space comprises 400 m2 with its own infrastructure: meeting rooms with videoconferencing, LCD monitors, kitchen, employee and management break area, ergonomically correct chairs with ecological leather, 100% recycled carpet, non-toxic paints, distinct fixtures that accentuate individuality, customized cabling, as well as large windows that receive natural light. The office addresses sustainability issues with programmable climate control. According to Mónica Tardieu, Corporate Services director at EDP Renováveis, every structure built in the office is intended to contribute to the optimal execution of work. With modern standards and efficient layout, “open tables separated by glass allow the team to interact more dynamically and the office’s natural light facilitates the flow of information.” Partnerships

Commensurate with EDP Renováveis Brazil's

growth in the country, social responsibility and environmental projects are added to the list of priorities. With this focus in mind, an unprecedented partnership was signed with Instituto EDP, where improvement initiatives are carried out in communities surrounding wind farms. In Tramandaí, for example, projects providing information, safety, culture and education to local residents are currently under way. According to environmental engineer Patrícia de Oliveira Ramos, EDP Renováveis believes there is a growing need to work closely with communities. “It is essential to help people understand

who EDP is and what we do, as well as to build a relationship of trust.” As the first exchange with the population living in the vicinity of the Wind Farm, “Dialogue with the community” informed the community about the use of wind to generate energy, the history of wind energy, as well as the construction and completion of the farm. Safety issues were highlighted with tips and cases presented by safety technicians. Another program that has emerged, is EDP nas Escolas (EDP in the Classroom), which teaches children about biodiversity. on 11

Pablo García is the shift Supervisor of the Control Center that EDP Renováveis has in Oviedo. He has been qualified as an industrial technical engineer by the University of Oviedo, taking likewise additional training in Spain as well as abroad. He has worked in EDP Renováveis since 2006 and assures that his job requires a lot of concentration, demanding also a high level of responsibility, given that he has to be prepared to handle any incident that may arise at any wind farm facility. Based in Oviedo, he supervises and operates a large part of the wind farm assets of EDPR by remote control, 2,200 MW, 90 facilities and more than 2000 turbines. "He thoroughly enjoys working hard since it obligates him to always give the best of himself", and he is happy he can count on a team comprised of 10 people, who work in unison, providing the opportunity of interacting with all his companions on a daily basis. But the passion for EDPR goes beyond that. He enjoys playing soccer matches with his colleagues in a team they have created among themselves. But his true passion is his first son Lucas, who now is one year old.

auren Miller, Training Manager for EDPR NA’s operations facilities, joined the company in June 2008 as an Assistant Operations Manager at Twin Groves Wind Farm in Illinois. “I have worked within the operations department my entire time at EDPR NA,” said Miller. “I have transitioned up the Operations Manager tract from an Assistant Operations Manager to a Senior Operations Manager.” As an Operations Manager, Lauren describes her position as one with many hats. She managed the operation and maintenance of the turbines at Twin Groves Wind Farm, conducted Quality Assurance and Control inspections, managed contracts, ensured regulatory and safety compliance, interacted with landowners, and responded to Balance of Plant (BoP) emergencies. “I enjoy working directly with personnel in the 14 o n r e n e w

field, creating innovative solutions for new problems,” said Miller. “Working in operations ensures that every day is different and I have direct input into forming new processes and procedures. Our job is truly a 24/7 position.” Lauren is currently in the process of moving to the Corporate Headquarters in Houston, Texas to fill the Training Manager position in the Operations Excellence Department. The Operations Excellence Department encourages teamwork and problem solving which results in continuous improvement throughout the organization by focusing on the needs of the company, empowering employees, and optimizing existing activities in the process. Prior to joining EDPR NA, Lauren was a Navy Training Officer serving onboard USS SHOUP (DDG 86). Lauren also attended the United States Naval Academy where she earned a

Bachelor of Science in engineering / math / science. “My experience as a Training Officer in the Navy has given me a great base to assume the position as the Training Manager within EDPR NA while my time as an Operations Manager has given me insight to where the company stands and what the training needs are out in the field.” Lauren’s favorite part of her job is her coworkers, especially working with employees in the field. “The most enjoyable things about working at EDPR NA is the quality of people I am surrounded by and the corporate structure which values employee input,” said Lauren. In addition to work, Lauren enjoys playing sports including soccer, volleyball, and swimming. Lauren also enjoys traveling and collecting currency.

nés Juarez Alvarez is a very approachable person who is passionate about technology. She started working at EDP Renováveis six years ago in the Asturias Wind Farms promotional campaign through an agreement signed between the University of Oviedo and Fundación HC Energía. Once she had completed the probationary training period, she joined the company through the GENESA Maintenance and Operations Department. One year later, she was assigned to the Oviedo Control Center as its manager. Her work consists of supervising the operability of the Spanish wind farms. With a team of 10, she supervises 2,200 MW over a total of 90 installations. However, these are not her only responsibilities: she is also the European Project Manager for the "WEMS" (Wind Energy Management System) Project. Inés is in charge of coordinating the worldwide integration of all EDPR's wind energy assets under a single SCADA system and managing them by means of a remote program. This affects the entire EDPR fleet and is carried out from three control centers: Porto, Oviedo, and Houston. It can be said, as with every member of EDPR, that Inés is an essential part of the system who must be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in order to monitor and review any incidents. One thing that has stood out in her current post since the very first day is the high standard she has set. Her integration into the team, first as a technician and then as a manager, marked her growth both on a professional and personal level. Her high standards and high level of experience helped her development from the first moment. It is worth reiterating the fact that Inés is very approachable, as this is a necessary quality in her post as part of on-going interaction. Every day, she has to coordinate various departments from all over the world. This is something that she enjoys. Not a day goes by when she is not learning and maintaining an enthusiasm for the job, which is advice that she passes on to all new recruits in the company. Enjoying every moment, the open air, brief excursions into the country, travel, reading, or family… all this is what keeps her smiling every day and what makes her a pleasure to work with.

For the past several years he has been in charge of corporate leadership supporting the technical teams of EDP Renováveis platforms . Carlos Martín Rivals was well familiar with the workings of EDPR but he was in for a pleasant surprise when he was welcomed among them from the very start. methods that serve the technical teams to better follow up on business and identify priorities. This year they are implementing the Operational Performance Management System (OPMS), which is going to make it possible to seamlessly track the performance of the wind farms in an ongoing manner.

Right now his objectives are centered on three main points:

• launching various joint improvement initiatives that bring together North America and the rest of Europe.

• creating the CTU, while seeking to form a small-scale yet motivated team with a global and multicultural mindset for giving support to all of the platforms, and bringing together groups from North America and Europe. • implementing the tools and analysis

One example of this is the energy efficiency improvement initiative that has just been launched, centering on a number of wind farms in the USA with significant support for Energy Evaluation in Europe.

TOM LO TURCO Age 31 / Deputy Project Director at EDPR UK

Upon his arrival in Scotland, Tom was immediately enamored by the size of Edinburgh. “It is a very tourism-driven city, but it is also a very easy place to live,” explains Tom. “You can walk or take the bus anywhere, which is definitely a stark contrast to Houston.”

A

dventurous by nature, Tom Lo Turco, was intrigued when the opportunity to work abroad presented itself. Having worked for EDPR NA in Houston, Texas since April 2007, Tom welcomed the challenge and accepted the newly created position of Deputy Project Director at EDPR UK in Edinburgh, Scotland. The position was created after EDPR was awarded the exclusive rights to develop 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power in the U.K. Moray Offshore Renewables Limited (MORL) is a joint venture between EDPR and SeaEnergy Renewables Limited (SeaEnergy) established in November 2009. EDPR holds 75 percent of MORL while SeaEnergy owns the remaining 25 percent. Tom is responsible for the project management of EDPR’s first offshore venture which, initially, will require him to stay in Scotland for 2 - 3 years. He focuses on budgeting, scheduling and resource management. This is a new role for him as his previous responsibilities at EDPR NA were more technical in nature. In Houston, Tom worked as a Civil Engineer and was instrumental in the project development of over 500 MW of EDPR NA’s wind farms as well as development, design and construction of the Operating and Maintenance facilities at each EDPA NA wind farm. In addition, Tom worked on the CAPEX estimating process for future EDPR NA projects. This experience gave Tom a broad perspective of the company’s initiatives which he is able to apply in his new role. “Working on the MORL project has been similar to working at a start-up company. We had to open a new office, agree upon and write new procedures and form new companies,” said Tom. “The team is what makes MORL power-

A New Yorker in Scotland Tom’s best advice for employees transferring to other EDPR platforms is to “accept that you will be out of your comfort zone for some time and challenge the precedents that have been set”. The rewards will come after ful. We have over 20 staff members representing nine different nationalities between the two companies that are totally dedicated to the project. In this respect, it differentiates us from our competitors.” One of his most interesting experiences so far in Edinburgh has been working at stakeholder events. “We needed to meet with as many local residents along the Moray Firth as possible during a two week period, which entailed many unorthodox tactics,” said Tom. “The most memorable for me was standing in front of a display in a mall in Inverness, trying to flag people down to get their opinion on our project. Most people thought I was trying to sell them a mobile phone or jewelry, so to say the least, it was very humbling.” His best advice for employees transferring to other EDPR platforms is to “accept that you will be out of your comfort zone for some time and challenge the precedents that have been set. This is a new initiative for EDPR and we can all learn from each new transfer. Also, understand that the rewards, although perhaps not tangible immediately, will be realized over a lifetime.” A true New Yorker at heart, Tom misses U.S. pizza the most. “You can’t get a decent slice here.” He enjoys the beautiful nature surrounding him in Edinburgh and has taken up hiking in the Highlands. 20 o n r e n e w

Following the partnership established with Fundação EDP, EDP Renováveis Brazil remains committed to education and culture in the local community where the Tramandaí Wind Farm is located, in Rio Grande do Sul. The wind farm is expected to be completed in late 2010 and several socio-environmental actions are being implemented with the local residents and schools. In early November, the second edition of the “Dialogue with the Community” initiative took place with EDP Renováveis Brazil Manager Renato Volponi, among other authorities and community representatives present. The current status of the Tramandaí Wind Farm was presented, with discussions on the future outlook for tourism in the region, establishing the next steps to be taken and subjects to be covered with the community. The “Art with Energy” Contest was held with a local elementary school. Students from 1st to 5th grade were challenged to produce newspapers in keeping with the theme “Biodiversity: there's so much different life.” The winners will take home medals, awarded by EDPR and people related to the field of sustainability.

EDPR NA’s Madison Wind Farm, the first commercial wind farm in New York State, celebrated ten years of producing clean, renewable energy on October 2010. The 11.55 megawatt Madison Wind Farm served as early proof that wind energy could contribute to a more diverse energy mix.

“New York State has been a leader in support of clean energy investments, and the Town of Madison was a pioneer in the transformation toward cleaner energy resources,” said Chief Executive Officer Gabriel Alonso. “At a time when wind was still a new industry in the northeast, New York State provided key incentives to facilitate investment in Madison Wind Farm. The success of Madison Wind Farm has since led to more than 1.200 megawatts of wind energy investment in the state. Madison Wind Farm provides annual contributions to the Town of Madison, its host community, and the Madison Central School District. In the past ten years it has contributed over $600,000 to the town and school district. The wind farm is doing its part to address the critical environmental challenges. The wind farm has produced 20 million KWh of power, the equivalent energy usage of nearly 35,000 homes. At the same time, it is displacing other sources of power, improving the environment by avoiding the emissions of nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide associated with the use of fossil fuels used to generate electricity. The avoided emissions achieved by Madison Wind Farm are roughly the equivalent of taking 10,000 cars off the road.
