GUIDE TO ARTIST WATCHING

Where should I stand while watching? • Stand behind and off to the side of the artist. • Do not stand between the artist and what they are painting. • Leave plenty of room behind the artist. They often need to back away from the canvas (up to 10 feet) to get a better view of their painting.

May I talk to the artists? • Absolutely! Most artists truly enjoy talking about their art, however, painting plein air can also be stressful - deadlines, racing the sun, and painting for a potential award - so be respectful. • If you see an artist with headphones, it is likely they are trying to concentrate and probably can’t talk.

Suggestions for Things to Say or Ask • Do you mind if I watch you work? • Do you mind talking while you paint? • Do you paint plein air often? • Why did you select this scene? • Do you teach workshops? If you love what you are seeing, and have lots more questions, consider a workshop at a later date (maybe even at

PenArt).
