Following the Turkish Revolution at the end of World War I reforms to achieve social and institutional change were initiated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the revolutionary leader and first President of the Republic of Turkey. Secularism and the protection of democratic rights were perhaps the most important of these reforms. Turkish Origins

Any visitor to Turkey will notice that the Turks are racially very mixed. They are even more mixed than the British. Some Turks are olive-skinned with black hair and brown eyes, others are blonde. Most Turks think of themselves as Europeans rather than Asians. It has been said that there may have been racial kinship with the Hungarians and the Finns, both of whom also came originally from tne East.

Once you have visited Turkey, sampled the delicious food and marvellous local wines and drinks, enjoyed the friendliness and hospitality of the people you are sure to want to return again and again, each time making new discoveries and new friends.

Basically Turks are a Turanian people whose original homeland was in central Asia. Towards the fourth century AD, because of climatic and geographical conditions, large scale of migrations of Turkish people travelled westward of Asia and finally arrived to Asia Minor (Anatolia) which was very quite, rich for pasture-land and suitable for stepped culture and nomadic life-style. Through the century they mixed and intermarried with descendent of hittites such as Phrygians, Lydians, Ionians, Lycians, cappadocians, ect. Finally Anatolia became a homeland for Turks, forever.

Starting with the 1950’s highway programme and culminating with the 80’s free market reforms, unbridled transformation of the landscape has taken place. Atatürk was born in Thessaloniki (Northern Greece) and was named Mustafa. Whilst at school, he gained the name Kemal as he was regarded as an excellent pupilKemal means excellence. This name stuck even through First World War until the day he died. He became an important coordinator of the defence of Turkey during the first World War and of the Battle of Gallipoli against the Anzacs (Colonial Forces). He was regarded as an impulsive man, however, the skills and chances he took helped to build the Turkey of today. When the War ended, he then led a revolution and again his excellence and daring, disregarding his own safety, led to the rule of Turkey and to set new standards in the Turkish way of life. It can be said that Atatürk single-handedly changed the whole future of this country, bringing it in line with its Western neighbours.

The desire of Turks to be understood and liked, to communicate and learn about people from other lands will be very evident during your visit here. Interpret their enthusiasm to interact with you with this in mind. Since the 19th century, European Art, literature and popular culture have depicted eastern women as docile, submissive creatures, clad in black sheets when not dancing before their masters in exotic transparent silks. Although such perceptions were one time based on some reality, the cliche has often remained. Industry and business clustered in the established commercial centres of Istanbul and Izmir while the apparatus of the government built itself a new capital inland in Ankara. These cities contain the country’s most respected universities, conservatories, theatres and concert halls. Jewish and Christian communities, and immigrants from different parts of the Ottoman Empire add diversity to the cities, contributing to the human mosaic so characteristic of Anatolia. The typical Turkish intellectual urbanite men and women have many things in common with their kind elsewhere in the world and they can be easygoing, funloving companions on your expeditions.

The rural scenery radiates with honesty and health and enhances the travellers experience. As the motherland of wheat, the taste of ordinary turkish bread surpasses any other when eaten freshly-baked. The orchards, vineyards and vegetable fields grow delicate and vibrant crops in addition to which rice, cotton, sugar beet, tobacco and potatoes are the most common produce. This diversity and abundance of food products have contributed to the richness of the Turkish cuisine. Almost all neighbourhoods have weekly farmer’s markets in addition to small grocery stores, fruit and vegetable stands, butchers, bakeries and florists. If you happen to see a farmer’s market stop, explore and taste some of the fruit and vegetables. This is how they were meant to taste before civilzation came up with genetic engineering! Each resort has a market day selling both fresh fruit and vegetables and also a whole host of leather goods, tee-shirts, souvenirs etc. and are well worth a visit. Please ask your representative for details of the market in your area.

A typical meal out in Turkey will normally start with a vast selecting of hors d’oeuvres (meze). These are brought to the table for you to choose from and consist of stuffed or pureed aubergines, stuffed peppers, octopus, stuffed vine leaves, yoghurt, squid, sea weed, böreks (filo pastry stuffed with meat or cheese) and so the list continues. But even the most discerning tourist will find something to satisfy their liking. Bread is normally complimentary but forget the butter. As they produce a fine quality of olive oil they drive their saturated fats from this, so salads consisting of just lettuce tomatoes, cucumber and onions will be dressed in this oil served with a wedge of lemon on the side. One thing to remember is that after meze is served it will be followed by fish, meat or pasta so do not get carried away with the first course. ıf you decide on

Calamary, Shrimp, Swordfish Turbot, Bluefish or Trout, these can either be simply charcoaled, grilled or turned into an exotic stew whichever you prefer. If you choose meat you may go for a Kebab, which is cooked on a skewer with peppers and onions. Meat generally tends to be lamb and tastes great.

Turkish lifestyle revolves around their love of food and conversation. Next to French and Chinese, Turkish Cuisine is the third best in the world, that is if you are au fait in what to eat. There are recipes dating back as far as the 15th and 16th centruies and an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables makes a very tasty repast. Although, in certain areas you only eat certain things, and to generalise, this is what you can expect in the restaurants in your resort.

To finish off your meal you must try some Turkish Delights from the dessert tray. If you have a sweet tooth go for Baklava, or Künefe, both smothered in a gooey sweet syrup.. simply delicious. If you wish to save the calories go for the abundance of fresh fruit on offer, the time of the season will determine what is available to you. As with all meals, nothing finishes it off better than a cup of coffee. Turkish Coffee definitely has an acquired taste. It is served plain, medium, sweet or very sweet in a demi tasse cup... a spoon is not required as all ingredients are included.

Due to the high mineral content of water here in Turkey, we do advise that you drink bottled water. Readily available from hotels, shops and bars. Boiled water for tea and coffee is safe to drink.

Food and Drink

In the centre of the town you will find the Post Office, indicated in Turkey with a large yellow sign reading “P.T.T. or TURK TELEKOM”. Your representative will advise you of the opening hours as these can vary depending on the time of the year. Here you can purchase stamps and make phone calls.

Voltage

The voltage in Turkey is 220 volts AC. Two pin plugs are used, but travel plugs are required.

Plumbing

There is a fixed rate for the postage of cards and letters and they should arrive within about 7 days. When calling home of course it is possible to phone from your hotels but please beware of the extra charges you will incur by using this service. (There may also be some language difficulties using the hotel switchboard). The easiest way to make a call is to buy a phone - card.

The plumbing system here in Turkey is not quite as sophisticated as in Europe, so please put all waste paper in the bin provided in your bathroom.

Sink Plugs

Turkish people believe to clean oneself thoroughly one should use constant running water from the tap, rather than a basin full of water; hence the reason you may sometimes find no plugs.

They come in different denominations depending on how long you wish to spend on the phone. The code for phoning your country is “00” plus your country code and omit the “0” from your area code.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are out and about all the time. Mosquito machines for use in your rooms and the necessary repellents are available from most shops and chemists.

Newspapers - Foreign newspapers are available and are usually 1 day old and can be quite expensive. Otherwise you can buy the Turkish Daily News - an English language newspaper printed in Turkey - it should provide you with basic coverage of world events.

Doctor

Our doctors are on call for our clients 24 hours a day and will either see you at his surgery or visit you at your hotel.

Duty Free

This includes goods obtained locally (e.g. in shops and supermarkets) in non EEC countries, or goods bought in the airport, duty free shop or on the aircraft.

They speak at least one foreign language and have been taking care of clients as Family Medicine Specialists for many years. If you are unwell whilst on holiday or need to see the doctor please advise your representative so they can follow your progress and help you in respect of bills or insurance claims.

Essential Holiday Information Stomach upsets on holiday can sometimes happen due to climate changes and unfamiliar foods. The following are a few tips to help you avoid any upsets. • Drink bottled water and not tap water • Avoid fruits which don’t require peeling • Increase your sunbathing time gradually from day to day • Don’t forget that drinking large amounts of alcohol especially in hot climates can upset your stomach too!

Sunbathing Tips

Turkey is blessed with glorious sunshine for much of the year. However we adsive caution when it comes to spending too much time in the sun. Sunburn can ruin a great holiday and especially for your first few days there is a risk of burning be it by the pool, on a boat or even just out and about around the town. By following a few simple guidelines you can prevent the dreaded sunburn and go home with a glowing healthy tan.

Foreign Bodies

As in all hot countries mosquitos, insects, ants, etc. are common in Turkey. These are usually harmless and are not a sign of your accommodation being unhygienic or dirty. If you come across any such insects please inform reception and they will take the necessary action. Regarding mosquitoes, there are many different repellents and plugin devices, avaiable in Turkey from all chemists.

• A high protection sun cream should always be used for the first few days of your holiday before moving on to lower factors. Those with fair or sensitive skin or young children would be better advised to use it for the whole duration. • It is better not to stay in the sun for more than a couple of hours for the first few days of your holiday. • Avoid sitting in the sun between 12 noon and 15:00 as this is the hottest time of the day. • Never sleep in the sun • Always drink lots of water when in the sun and avoid alcohol as it leads to dehydration. It is advisable for children to wear a hat and t-shirt whenever possible.

At the Barbers

Gentlemen, it has probably been quite a good few years since you went to a traditional barbers, complete with hot towels, cut throat razors and copious quantities of shaving foam. Here’s your chance to join the locals and experience the Turkish barbers where you’ll get the closest shave of your life. Once all the stubble has gone and your face feels soft and smooth you’ll be liberally doused with lemon cologne. The experience does non stop there! Next the hairs in your ears and nose are singed-don’t worry it is painless. Finally your forehead, temples, neck, shoulders and arms are given a massage that leaves you feeling like a million dollars!

Security

Please ensure your apartment or hotel room door is secured before retiring at night or leaving during the day. If your balcony is accessible from the street or hotel grounds please ensure that it is also secured.

Chemist

Ladies, why not pamper yourself with a manicure and pedicure from the hairdressers at very reasonable rates.

If you enjoy shopping you have come to the right place, and if you don’t you’ll probably get caught up in the frenzy anyway as it is difficult to escape the friendly Turkish shopkeeper or stall owner. Turkey is definitely a shoppers paradise.

Of all the things Turkey is renowned for, their carpets must be best known. Turkish carpets are steeped in the history and traditions of this fascinating Country. They were brought to the Mediterranean coast in the 12th Century and since than, the craftsmanship of weaving has been handed down from mother to daughter. The best carpets come from the small villages of Turkey, for example silk carpets come from Hereke, near Istanbul and wool carpets are woven in Yahyali, near Kayseri. Artificial colours are not used and only the finest silk, cotton and wool are used as weaving materials. When visiting Turkey why not meander leisurely through the bustling streets and step inside one of the many vividly colourful shops, selling these wonderfull, mystical carpets.

To wander around the bazaars and streets is a task in itself.. there is really no secret in how to avoid the shopkeepers eye and the chances are that he will have spotted you long before you arrive to his shop. Shops are also difficult to miss as they sprawl out onto the pavements. Every item imaginable is displayed in an interesting fashion. But before you have time to explore these goods, a friendly face will be talking to you in your language and inviting you to take a much needed seat and refreshment, usually apple tea.

To look as though you know what you are doing when buying a carpet follow these simple guidelines:

Most of the shops accept major credit cards, but have been known to incur a small charge for this service. You may also pay by using travellers cheques or your own currency, especially US. Dollars and sometimes this can improve your bargaining power.

• Turn the carpet over and look at the closeness of the weave. • Ask how many knots per square centimetre and the tightness of the weave, the smaller the knots, the higher the quality. • Compare the colours on the front of the carpet, the pattern should be easily recognisable on the back.

Leather and Suede goods also offer bargains for everyone and the quality is superb. You can have shoes custommade by small craftsman but more typical is the Turkish slipper.

Antiques The export of antiques is prohibited. In order to avoid confiscation at customs upon your departure from Turkey, keep receipts of all purchases and be sure that the artifact you have bought is not classified as an object of historical value.

As for jewellery, the best finds are in the Bazaars. Gold is normally sold by the weight with something added for workmanship. Most of the gold is 14 carat.

Cesme Town

The Cesme peninsular is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas on the Turkish coast. Popular with Turkish holidaymakers for its great beaches and relaxed atmosphere, it has hardly been discovered by European tourists.

The town of Cesme is built around a medieval Genoese Castle overlooking a large yacht marina and the old town square. The main street is lined with shops, cafes and a large art gallery in an old Greek Orthodox church. The castle has an interesting museum with many historic artefacts from the local area. There are souvenir shops and shops selling the local jams and puddings made with pine mastic, an important local product with a distinctive flavour. The waterside fish restaurants are crowded on summer evenings with diners enjoying the fantastic fresh seafood.

Guided tours can be arranged or you may prefer to explore the area yourself with a bicycle or rental car or by local transport. Public minibuses run between all the sites below, we can point you in the right direction.

Alacati

Alacati is a charming former Greek town located on the Cesme peninsular on Turkey’s beautiful Aegean coast. Overlooked by a row of stone windmills, the town’s cobbled streets are lined with old stone houses, shops and tavernas, and dotted with friendly guesthouses and boutique hotels. The local shops sell crafts, jewellery and antiques; while the village square is filled with market stalls and open-air cafes, great for browsing or people watching.

Beaches

Cesme has many great beaches with soft white sand and sparkling, turquoise water. The most famous is the stunning beach at Ilica, though there are quieter stretches beyond the village of Ciftlikkoy, on the peninsular’s south west coast. Elsewhere on the peninsular there are beachclubs with music, water sports and cafes.

Alacati Bay, 3 km south of the village, has become Turkey’s top wind-sport location thanks to its protected, shallow water and strong, reliable wind. It is an established destination for kiteboarders and windsurfers from across Europe and a venue for international competitions, which attract thousands of spectators each summer.

Erythrai

For culture-vultures, the remains of the ancient hilltop city of Erythrai, inhabited since the Bronze Age, can be explored 22 km south east of Cesme. Wander around the scattered ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine ruins and scramble up to the acropolis for a great view.

The Greek island of Chios

Ferries cross to the Greek island of Chios in the summer. The crossing takes about 45 minutes, so it’s possible to visit for a weekend or even a day-trip. Chios is a quiet island, which is far off the beaten-track. There are some picturesque mountainside villages, great beaches; but above all a feeling of being far, far away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Town Beach:

Ladies Beach:

A short trip (10 min) on a dolmus takes you to this sandy beach, which offers a selection of water sports throughout the summer. Sunbeds and parasols are plentiful for a small charge and there is a wide range of snack bars and restaurants.

Long Beach:

Piri Reis, an admiral of the Ottoman fleet in the century is the author of Kitab-ı Bahriyye which is history’s first-known sea pilot’s book. Every Mediterranean port is accurately described and the charts are almost perfect, reflecting the author’s considerable knowledge of the Mediterranean, which partly belonged to his empire (the area stretching from Morocco to Venice). In 1550, or thereabouts, Piri Reis produced charts of North and South America and here again he has achieved amazing accuracy. How he did it is one of history’s unsolved mysteries. In Kitab-ı Bahriyye, there is a chapter about Kalkan Bay, wherein the author has described with pinpoint precision Kalkan’s fresh water supply, the supply which is mainstay of the village today. From him we also learn that the bay was also called ALIKI-KARA or ALKI-KAARA and that the western tip of the bay was named KALAMOÇ. Kalkan the Turkish name and Kalamaki, the Greek name may have been derived from these origins. At the time of writing, Piri Reis does not mention a settlement in the bay. (16th century)

You will have time to laze around on these beautiful sands before returning to Gümbet after a memorable day. Once again you will be impressed at the diversity of Turkey’s natural beauty.

Alanya is steeped in history dating back some 20.000 years. Dominating feature of the resort is Alanya castle which was once a mighty Ottoman fortress set a top a steep hill. Alanya was, at one time, the stronghold of the most succesful and ruthless pirates of the Mediterranean. The forttress contains the ruins of a sixth century church and to the northwest a barracks and a platform where prisoners had one last chance to save themselves. If they could throw one of three pebbles into the sea from this platform they were pardoned, if not they were immediately hurled to their death.

When the tulip was first introduced into Europe from Turkey it was throught to be a species of lily, as we see, for example, in one of the earliest european references to the flower by the French physician P.Belon, who visited the Near East in 1546, and referred to it as ‘lils rouges’. When exactly the tulip was first introduced to eupope is not known, but the Austro Hungarien ambassador O.G.Busbecq is throught to have carried some tulip bulbs back with him in 1562. He describes his first sight of these beautiful flowers on his outward journey in 1555 between Edirne and Istanbul:”As we passed through this district we everywhere came across quantities of flowers - narcissi, hyacinths, and tulipans, as the Turks call them... The tulip has little or no scent, but it is admired for its beauty and the the variety of its colours.

As the goddess of love, Venus is the “queen of pleasure” and mother of the Roman people. Possibly the daughter of Jupiter, she was the daughter of Dione. Venus was the wife of Vulcan, god of metalwork, but she was often unfaithful to him. Among her many lovers were Mars, the god of war; and the handsome shepherd Adonis. Venus was also the mother (by Mercury) of Cupid, god of love. She was the goddess of chastity in women, despite the fact that she had many affairs with both gods and mortals. As Venus Genetrix, she was worshiped as the mother (by Anchises) of the hero aeneas, the founder of the Roman people; as Venus Felix, the bringer of good fortune; as Venus Victrix, the bringer of victory; and as Venus verticordia, the protector of feminine chestity. Venus is also a nature goddess, associated with the arrival of spring. She is the bringer of joy to gods and humans. Venus really had no myths of her own but was so closely identified with the Greek Aphrodite that she “took over” Aphrodite’s myths.

The tulip enjoyed its greats celebrity in the Ottaman Empire between the 16th and 18th centuries, and its use as a garden flower and decorative motif reached a height during the reign of Ahmed III (1703-1730). Theperiod 1718-1730 was later dubbed by historians as the Tulip Era. An album of illustrations of tulips publisbed at this time contains water colours of 50 varieties, just a fraction of the estimated 2000 or more cultivars thought to have existed at the time on the evidence of contemporary sources. The next stage in the tulip’s journey araund world was over the Atlantic to Ottawa, and today there can hardly be a country in the world unacquainted with the tulip. Tulip festivals are beld in Canada, Holland and Japan.

Anatolia’s Gift to the World. The Tulip

The tulip may have been introduced into Anatolia by the Turks in the course of their migration from Central Asia. The fact that this flower does not appear on the coins or art of Roman and Byzantine periods shows that is was unknown to them. It is only in the 12th century that the tulip makes its appearance in the decorative arts of Anatolia, and it is first mentioned in literature by the 13th century Turkish mystik Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi, who frequently uses the image of the tulip, as for example in the line, “The soul always speaks of the tulip garden”. 68
