The Campaign for Penland’s Future 2010-2016
Penland School of Crafts Penland School of Crafts is an international center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Located in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the school offers workshops in books and paper, clay, drawing and painting, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles, wood, and other media. Penland also offers artist residencies, a gallery and visitors center, an archive, and community education programs. Penland’s focus on excellence, its long history, and its inspiring retreat setting have made it a model of experiential education. Penland School of Crafts is a nonprofit, tax-exempt institution.
Penland’s Mission Penland School of Crafts supports individual and artistic growth through creative practice and discovery.
The Penland Vision Penland is committed to providing educational programs in a total-immersion environment that nurtures individual creativity. Penland’s programs embrace traditional and contemporary approaches, balancing respect for materials and techniques with exploration and innovation.
Educational Philosophy • Total-immersion
workshop education is a uniquely effective way of learning. Close interaction with others promotes the exchange of information and ideas between individuals and disciplines. • Generosity enhances education—Penland encourages instructors, students, and staff to freely share their knowledge and experience. • Craft is kept vital by constantly expanding its definition while preserving its traditions. • Skills and ideas are equally important and their exploration has value that carries into life beyond the studio. •

The Campaign for Penland’s Future 2010-2016 | Report to Our Supporters The Campaign for Penland’s Future began in 2010 as a comprehensive campaign to create a sustainable future for one of the craft world’s most important educational centers. The goals of the campaign were to strengthen the studios, housing, and other facilities used for Penland’s programs; to rescue and reuse Penland’s historic buildings; to increase endowments in support of scholarships, specific programs, and general operations; and to create vigorous growth in the annual fund. It is our pleasure to report to you on the many ways your participation in the Campaign for Penland’s Future has made Penland an even stronger and more meaningful place to study and experience the creative process.
“Penland’s extraordinary history is made visible today by its artists—people who live around the world, stand at the forefront of creative thinking in their communities, and make work that influences the evolution of contemporary craft.” Mark Shapiro | Artist
Between April 2010 and September 2016, 2,843 individual and institutional donors have committed $31,750,842.
Setting the Stage for the Campaign for Penland’s Future In 1998 Penland’s leadership stood at a crossroads. The board of trustees faced a storied history, beloved programs, and a campus in disrepair. This group of intrepid board members, together with staff members and friends, plunged headlong into a project that would span almost 20 years. Led by architect and campus planner Edwin F. Harris, FAIA, and landscape architect Sam Reynolds, the school developed a visionary campus master plan to guide and inspire the campus improvements to come. Following the advice of fundraising consultant James Hackney, a team led by campaign co-chairs Cynthia Bringle and Bobby Kadis defied all odds to raise $11,732,076 in the 2001– 2005 Preserve Penland Campaign. Preserve Penland set the stage for donor development and growth in annual giving to support stronger operations; it created fifteen new endowed scholarship funds, addressed life safety and accessibility, and made priorities of historic preservation, housing, and studio improvements. Not only did Preserve Penland replace roofs and repair foundations, it built new studios for wood, letterpress, and printmaking and new housing for resident artists and students. It also added an accessible entry and restrooms to the Penland Gallery and created an accessible walkway across the lower core campus. In 2006 the Penland Campus Master Plan was updated and reaffirmed by the board and staff. The remaining projects in the plan—projects that would fulfill program and facility dreams—were ready to be tackled. The Penland Board of Trustees approved the Campaign for Penland’s Future in April 2010 with goal of twenty-five million dollars. This campaign would raise funds to provide a solid foundation for Penland for generations to come. The aim of the Campaign for Penland’s Future was to strengthen Penland’s studios and operations, address the next most important capital infrastructure needs, fund scholarships, continue to grow the school’s annual fund and endowment, and encourage friends to make planned gifts. Robyn and John Horn agreed to be honorary campaign co-chairs. John Lee, Alida Fish, Rob Pulleyn, Betsy Bethune, and Glen Hardymon served as campaign co-chairs.
The Campus Master Plan established guiding principles to reflect the school’s core values and direct improvements to the facilities and grounds. In all efforts, place would support interactions between people and programs. 1. Ensure that programs are a priority. 2. Preserve the reasonable disorder. 3. Create places for communication and contemplation. 4. Make the campus accessible and safe. 5. Care for historic properties. 6. Use craftsmanship in buildings and the landscape. 7. Consider visitor needs. 8. Employ energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. 9. Treat the existing landscape with care. 10. Make decisions through inclusive processes. 11. Foster interaction with the community and other organizations.
“The new drawing studio is fantastic! The space has amazing light, and the controlled outdoor space for people to work in is unusual—and great—for a studio like this. The views from up here are expansive. I think no class can avoid considering that when it’s right there in front of them—it’s going to inform student work no matter what. The open floor plan with its space and flexibility also impacts how we work. It definitely encourages a sense of community and exchange between students. And the equipment provided and all the options are also so helpful! There are easels, movable walls, flat files, half a dozen ways to set up lighting—all of it makes working here smart and efficient.” Joe Hart | Drawing Instructor

The Campaign for Penland’s Future Annual Giving Growth—total raised toward five-year goal: $3,834,170 Annual gifts range from $5 to $50,000 and demonstrate the commitment of 1,529 people who want to help Penland power the furnaces, keep flowers blooming in the garden and the lights on in the wee hours of the morning, as well as support staff to answer the phones, run the studios, and assist with student needs. Our goal was to grow the number of supporters, increase levels of giving, and raise awareness of the role the annual fund plays in keeping tuition, room, and board as low as possible for all. During the Campaign for Penland’s Future, the annual fund grew from $440,000 in fiscal year 2010 to $712,988 in fiscal year 2015. The number of donors supporting the school at the Lucy Morgan Leader level ($1,000 or more per year) increased from 184 to 247, and 140 Lucy Morgan Leaders (LMLs) increased their giving level. Donor loyalty has also proved to be quite strong: from fiscal year 2006 to fiscal year 2010, we averaged a 72% donor retention rate among LMLs, and from fiscal year 2011 to fiscal year 2015 our average was 83%.
“Being at Penland is a treat regardless. But in this new studio, we’re not in a cave anymore. There’s all this light and space— it’s glorious! There are lots of independent workspaces and a big communal workspace. It’s a very comfortable room. Having the flexible space to come together or spread out has definitely been the biggest impact on the class dynamic.” Shawn Sheehy | Books Instructor
Capital Infrastructure—total raised: $17,667,065 The 2006 updated Campus Master Plan established a new set of priorities from studio and housing improvements to historic facilities and information technology infrastructure upgrades.

Endowment Growth—total raised: $8,860,390 Endowment support signals a donor’s commitment to an organization’s mission and purpose and desire on the part of supporters to see programs serve constituents long into the future. During the Campaign for Penland’s Future, the endowment has grown from $6,156,721 (April 2010) to $17,081,748 (July 2016). Penland’s long-term goal is to grow the endowment to ensure that students with financial need will be served and the annual costs of operations and facility maintenance are met. Endowment growth during the Campaign for Penland’s Future is supporting scholarships, specific programs and studios, and facility maintenance.

Planned Giving for Penland’s Future Circle of Hands is Penland’s planned giving group. Currently 74 donors have indicated their intention to make a legacy gift in support of the school’s future. Planned or deferred gifts are as simple as designating Penland in a will or as a beneficiary of an IRA. All planned gifts have tax benefits, and planning should occur with professional advice. Our goal in this campaign was to raise awareness of planned giving opportunities and grow the Circle of Hands. Donors may make unrestricted gifts or direct their gift to a specific program, studio, scholarship, or endowment. Gifts may be made in any name or in honor of someone else. “My time as a core student has been seminal in every regard. I have grown immensely in my understanding of material and process and in the sophistication of my artistic vision. I have lived, worked, and learned with people who have had a profound impact on me, and whose influence I will carry forever. I have had the highest of highs, the lowest of lows, and the most cups of coffee.” Jack Mauch | Penland Core Fellow

“Architect Louis Cherry, FAIA, LEED AP, has designed a studio specifically to meet the needs of photography as it rapidly evolves. The new space addresses dehumidification, ventilation, and dust-free requirements as well as adequate storage for chemicals, equipment, and tools. Gone will be the days of working with inadequate electrical wiring in poorly ventilated spaces that flood with heavy rains. The new studio will allow Penland not only to maintain its reputation for traditional and alternative process work but also expand its program to fully encompass digital technologies and professional studio practice. The future of photography at Penland promises expanded opportunities for cross-disciplinary sharing with its neighboring studios as photography is increasingly integrated into other media such as textiles, ceramics, and metals. Alida Fish | Photography Instructor, Campaign Co-Chair, and Penland Trustee

Bottom: A student sets out for a hike on the Paulus Path, named in honor of artist, teacher, and Penland neighbor Paulus Berensohn. The sign was made by studio coordinator Susan Feagin.

“The communal living aspect of the core program was really important to me and to most core students. You become each other’s family and community, and it’s a really tight bond that can last long after the program. You serve as each other’s support network and become very committed to each other’s artistic development and happiness. Having a house designed and built specifically for that purpose is an important change. It’s a demonstration that Penland recognizes how important the core student relationships are to the program and is making those a priority. I think, in addition to the new house being a nicer place to live and better integrated into the community physically, it’s really important because it represents an affirmation of what a unique and cool program this is. I really haven’t seen anything like it anywhere else, and certainly not anything that has such a profound impact on all the people associated with it.” Wes Stitt | Penland Core Fellow 2008–2010
Top: Ian Henderson (Core Fellow 2010–2012) created a tile wall for the new Core House during a residency in the Arts/Industry Program of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. The new Core House will house ten artists and be situated on the Penland campus south of the large meadow between the Farm House and the Wyatt Resident Artist Apartments. “WiFi!! We are thrilled to have campus-wide information technology improvements for the studios and the offices. Everyone works more efficiently, and students can access the Internet for their projects and easily send great images of their work to Instagram and Facebook.” Jerry Jackson | Penland’s Deputy Director

Bottom left: information technology manager Mark Boyd worked closely with subcontractors, suppliers, and local utilities on a major upgrade to the Penland’s Internet infrastructure in 2015.
