Washington Avenue Green was opened in October of 2010 as the City’s first new green public space on the Delaware in decades. This one-acre park, conveniently located along the riverfront recreational trail, was designed to improve local wildlife habitat and is the first phase of what will hopefully become a much larger ecological park in future years. This new park space replaced the former concrete surfaces with native plantings including woodland, meadow, and wildflower species, made improvements to the existing trail, and addressed localized stormwater run-off and water quality. Other key components include enhanced views out to the pier and river and installation of interpretive signage to provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the site’s history, ecological context and function of the river and its upland edges, and interpretation of the site’s public art installation The Friends of Washington Avenue Green, are associated with the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation and assisted by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. The mission of the Friends of Washington Avenue Green is to support and promote the use of the new greenspace on the Delaware River where Washington Avenue intersects Columbus Blvd and they meet on the 4th Tuesday every OTHER month at 6:30PM Find them on Facebook at Facebook.com/WashingtonAvenueGreen Or visit www.washingtonavenuegreen.com

DELAWARE RIVER TRAIL (29) Begins Columbus Boulevard at Washington Avenue
The Delaware River trail is a mixeduse recreational path that has helped Philadelphians reconnect with their Delaware River Waterfront. Winding from the Pier 70 shopping center to Washington Avenue, the trail is the first phase of an extensive waterfront trail system that will eventually run the entire length of the Central Delaware waterfront, and at Allegheny Avenue will connect to the North Delaware Greenway. The trail creates a safe alternative to the busy traffic of Columbus Boulevard, opens up spectacular views of the waterfront and links to the Schuylkill River trail via Center City’s successful Pine and Spruce Street bike lanes. Opened in May 2010, this rudimentary trail was the first in a series of early action construction projects aimed at quickly providing public access to areas of the waterfront that had been closed to the public for decades. SugarHouse Casino completed a small section of waterfront trail through their property in the fall of 2009.This beautifully landscaped trail provides a panoramic view of the waterfront to the north and the south, including a wonderful view of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. In late 2012 DRWC will be completing a new trail section that will connect this trail south all the way to Spring Garden Street.

WASHINGTON AVENUE GREEN (30) Columbus Boulevard at Washington Avenue www.washingtonavenuegreen.com
Washington Avenue Green was opened in October of 2010 as the City’s first new green public space on the Delaware River in decades. Other key components include enhanced views out to the pier and river and installation of interpretive signage to provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the site’s history, ecological context and function of the river and its upland edges, and interpretation of the site’s public art installation.
