I now follow Rochdale as I’m too broken to play anymore How long have you been involved with Pennine Juniors? This is my 7th season as a coach How long have you been managing a team? 7 years What do you like most about managing a team? Who said I like it??? What do you find challenging when managing a team? Everything but mainly keeping the players keen What has been your funniest/best/ most memorable moment? too many to name, but probably the Dads v Lads games, but we have had to stop them as the Dads are all too old now! Describe your team: quiet but very effective when they are in the mood! What are you focusing on in training? Passing, passing and passing! It’s the best skill in the world! Tell us the best game to date and why: Failsworth Villa away 2012/2013 season won 5-6 best game of football I have ever been involved in, end to end stuff and we just had enough with only 11 players but they all worked so hard and deserved the win. What advice/tips would you give to young, up and coming footballers? Play as often as you can even if it’s on your own, and no virtual football doesn’t count

Match reports: Date: 5th September 2015 Home v Prestwich Result: lost 0-3 Hi All Yes we are back with a slightly different look as we have recruited 4 new playersover the summer to the team, Ethan Sudworth, Charlie Rainbow, Ethan Littler and Aiden Jackson, welcome to the team boys Our first game this season was against Prestwich Marauders of whom we knew very little about except they played a friendly v Hooley bridge as lost 3-1. We started the game well enough with our new outfield captain Harry Kershaw (Tom George still team captain but in goal this year) running the midfield with some crunching tackles and some superb passes from the challenges, it all looked like it was going to be easy, until a nothing through ball seemed to catch us out, neither our keeper Tom George or the defence quite got it right as we watched the ball roll over the line and Prestwich took the lead 0-1 This seemed to knock us for six a little bit and took us a while to compose ourselves again, but we did and dominated possession with again Harry leading the way spraying the balls left and right only problem was we weren’t getting any shots at goal!! Half time 0-1 Still thought we could get back into the game and we changed things around a bit and changed to 442 rather than the 451 we started with moving Aiden Jackson up alongside Brandon ‘Ferbrando’ Coughlan but it still didn’t change things as the passing went out the window, players took it on themselves to go more direct instead of having a bit more patience with the build up and the Prestwich defence dealt with it quite easy! Wasn’t long before the game was killed off as we were all over the place at the back and didn’t clear our lines well enough and Prestwich found themselves in too much space and scored another 2 goals Full time 0-3

Man of the match – Harry Kershaw – he was desperate to win this game today and showed it on the pitch, if we can get everybody playing like that we would walk this league! Special mention – Aiden Jackson great debut played in several positions today but played them all really well, And his take down from a 50yds ball would have been worth the entrance fee if we had paid!!! My thoughts – we are still coming together as a team with the new editions coming quite late in the summer, but this shouldn’t mean we forget the simple way to play football, we need a bit more of everything at the moment patience, composure, grit and determination!! As I mentioned after the game we need to play it simple and as a team! Today was definitely 3pts dropped

Date: 12th September 2015 Away v Springhead Result: won 2-1
Hi All First away game this season v last year’s league runners up AND cup winners, Springhead They didn’t play last week as they didn’t have all their paperwork done in time, they were still waiting for some id’s to come through for a couple of new players, but still had 12 or 13 players The forecast had said the heavy overnight rain would disappear after 10am so with a 10.30 ko the jacket was left in the car!!! The forecast was wrong ! ! We decided to tweak the formation a touch as Brandon (formerly known as Ferbrando) needed a bit more support, so we went 433 with Ethan Littler making his league debut starting at left back. The game started quite even with a good battle in the midfield and both defences holding strong, but Tom George was a touch busy needing to clear up after a few through balls and needed to be brave sliding out to claim a couple. We started to find our feet and looked more of a threat as Springhead looked like they wanted just to play counter attacking football, which suited us Matt Haynes looked like he was struggling a bit as he had a bit of a sore leg from the gym on Monday, so we swapped thing and moved Ethan Littler to centrehalf and Sam Mac to left back, which worked really well. We did manage to get the break we didn’t last week as from a throw in we managed to get the ball into Springheads penalty area Brandon gave a little nudge on to the centrehalf and watched the ball bounce over both players to the advancing Wilson Cheweshie who fired into the top right corner leaving the keeper no chance!!!! 0-1 This was just what we needed to kick start our season, you could see the confidence growing throughout the team Half time 0-1

We came out confident in the second half winning the ball all over the pitch, looking like we wanted it and getting it, but it was an individual piece of skill that brought the second goal, Harry Kershaw picked the ball up just inside the Springhead half and drove at the heart of the defence beating 3 or 4 players along the way on his last jink he set himself for a shot on his right foot and placed it with power past the keeper 0-2 We were cruising now and with Matt Haynes now playing right back with the permission to get forward he won the ball on the half way line and set off running (he can out run most!) but his touch put it back to the defender who closed in with a shoulder charge knocking Matt off his stride, but I knew instantly there was a problem as Matt yelled and stayed down!!! After the Springhead team finished calling him for diving the ref let me onto the pitch as Matt had pulled his hamstring!! We were a touch flat after this combined with the effort we had already put into the game, Springhead got back into the game, a hopeful punt over our left back with a ball I thought was going out for a goal kick stayed in and the winger crossed the ball which I thought clipped the arm of the Springhead forward as it bounced to another forward who flicked it towards the goal and went in off the underside of the bar 1-2 Squeaky bum time for the last 15mins as Springhead wanted something out of the game we rode our luck at times but equally fought hard, they nearly snatched a point as their forward beat the offside (cough cough) and as Tom came rushing out the forward slotted it underneath him goal bound, but with Dan Nicholls chasing back and a small puddle holding it up we survived Full time 1-2 Man of the match – Ethan Littler – brilliant defending the switch to c/half really paid off as he didn’t put a foot or head wrong, excellent debut Special mention – Dan Nicholls – had a torrid time at Springhead in the past but played brilliant alongside the man of the match Harry Kershaw – showed great leadership today with a great performance dispite getting kicked all over the park!! My thoughts – I knew this team could do better than last week! What impressed me today was that when we made changes the team kept on working and playing as a team, a great fighting performance and a great 3pts

Date: 19th September 2015 Home v Tottington Result: lost 0-3 Hi All Home v Tottington this week and down to 12 players, Matt Haynes not recovered from his hamstring from last week, Ethan Sudworth had been ill for the last several days and Josh Burke playing for his school, with all 3 being defenders this meant a shuffle of the pack. We dropped Charley Rainbow into centrehalf with Dan Nicholls (who only passed himself fit Friday) and moved last week’s man of the match Ethan littler to left back, with Sam Mac filling in at right back. We were under the cosh right from the start as we looked a bit nervy but a superb outstretched hand from Tom George in goal to push a shot from just inside the area out for a corner off the post seemed to settle us down a touch. 15mins into the game from a long throw in to Totty the ball pinballed from back post to front post with the final result of a Totty player unmarked to nod into the empty goal from 2yds out 0-1 Their second came from the penalty spot as a long ball pumped up field went over the head of Charley who chased but the forward was quicker and got half a yard in front, Charley did his best to catch him but in doing so pulled him back and the ref awarded a penalty. The Totty player smashed it into the bottom left corner without Tom even moving, but the ref made him retake the kick as the ball rolled just before kicking. This time Tom dived and he chose the right way but the kick was right in the bottom corner 0-2 Half time 0-2 Second half was similar to the first half with us only having a couple of half chances, Totty scored their 3rd after the winger had all the time in the world to pick out the man in the 6yd area to push home an easy goal Full time 0-3

Man of the match – Dan Nicholls – doubtful for this game as he had also tweaked a muscle midweek but thankfully he played today as he broke up so many attacks, and stopped it from being a cricket score! Special Mention – Tom George – brilliant in goal from the first minute of the game, definitely tried to lead his team with his great vocal effort (hopefully a quiet afternoon now!) Harry Kershaw – worked tirelessly in the centre midfield maybe a bit too much as came off for the last 5mins with a hamstring pull! My thoughts – it was always going to be a tough game today even before Matt and Ethan were missing, but we had too many players not standing up and fighting for the cause, too many people standing with hands on hips instead of rolling up their sleeves and getting involved, we must get it into our heads WE ARE A TEAM !!!! Date: 26th September 2015 Away v Failsworth Dynamos Result: lost 6-1
Hi All Away this week v Failsworth Dynamos in the Cup This wasn’t the Failsworth who we had previously battled against, this was a totally new team that played previously in the Tameside league but had got off to a good start in the league winning their opening games We had a switch about again as we are struggling getting the right balance in the team going for a 3-1-4-2 hoping for a more attacking formation We started ok but still struggled to get the ball through the midfield quick enough to push to the forwards leaving them a little isolated for most of the opening 10 mins, Failsworth looked to play a long ball through the middle or down the right wing but the defence held tight with Tom George quick off his line to snub out the through ball. Harry Kershaw playing upfront today was unlucky after he picked up a through ball with just the keeper to beat, but the keeper was very quick to come out and just managed to get a finger on the ball as Harry tried to round him. Harry had another good effort as Elliot McBurnie and Wilson Chiweshie linked really well together and from an excellent first time cross from Elliot to Harry but his header was just off target. Page | 9
It was Failsworth who got the first goal as a punt over the top beat the offside trap (that’s the official line) this time with Tom advancing their no.7 calmly dinked it over Tom 1-0 We were still in the game and pressing forward but we couldn’t get the break through needed and Failsworth scored their second, after Tom spilled the ball (he was kicked in the head a few moments before and was a little unsteady I found out after the game!!) and their striker finished it off 2-0 We did hit back pretty quick from this as Harry had the ball played into his feet at the edge of the penalty box, he got the ball under control and started his jinking run past 3 defenders, got the bounce he need to get past the fourth which left him 8yds out with just the keeper to beat, he picked his spot top right for another superb individual goal 2-1 This didn’t stop Failsworth as from a tight angle the striker managed to drop it over Tom for 3-1 With half time coming there was an incident on the half way which unfortunately the ref along with myself, Craig and Failsworth management team all missed! All we saw was Harry on the floor with their centrehalf on top of him!! As the players pulled them apart Harry walked away but the centrehalf carried on going at Harry, the ref eventually got both players together and booked them both, turns out Harry had called the lad a few names and the defender decided to grab Harry by the throat and wrestle him to the ground!! Whilst I don’t condone the name calling it was hardly worth grabbing somebody by the throat and wrestling them to the ground, and I am sure if the ref would of seen it I’m sure a straight red would have been awarded, Which would probably change the dynamics of the game!!! Half time 3-1 We weren’t quite sure how the incident just before half time would affect the two teams, but we never really got a chance to find out, after a mix up between Ethan Littler and Tom coming out neither decided what to do which left the attacker to capitalise 4-1 The game entered a scrappy stage after that with the ref getting his yellow cards out for a combination of bad challenges and niggly fouls, there were 2 for Failsworth and 1 each for Charley Rainbow and Ethan Sudworth Failsworth scored another 2 before the end of the game Full time 6-1
Page | 10
Man of the match – Aiden Jackson – we had a talk over the last week and we both thought he needed to step up his work rate to play in centre midfield and he certainly did today well done Ps Aiden more improvement can still come Special mention - Elliot McBurnie – another player I asked to improve his game and bring other players into the game, he did this along with his usual good work rate. My thoughts – could of should of done better today, glimpses of how we can play were there but not for long enough periods. Date: 3rd October 2015 Home v Hooley Bridge Result: lost 1-7 Hi All Home this week v Hooley Bridge After last week’s disappointment our confidence was low, but for the first 10mins we held our own, but after that the gremlin’s crept back in after a few individual mistakes and lack of tracking back with player Hooley bridge scored, this opened the door for the onslaught!!! Before we knew it we were 0-3! Somehow from somewhere (I’m not sure) we started to compete again, winning challenges and applying pressure, which paid off as chances started to come our way and the Hooley back line looked fragile, Aiden Jackson managed to pick the ball up on the edge of the Hooley area and without hesitation placed the ball into the corner 1-3 our first home goal of the season. Half time 1-3 Unfortunately half time came too soon and Hooley managed to regroup, along with being gifted a goal within a couple of mins of the restart. This got players on each other back and we never regained our composure and let Hooley run out clear winners Full time 1-7 Man of the match – none!
Page | 11
My thoughts – we were second best today in all areas, never looked like competing, we just don’t seem to be clicking and the balance and confidence are missing. We have too many players ready to shout at others instead of us all being one, getting our heads down and working Special mention – Harry Kershaw – Harry got the call this week I had been dreading! Barnsley had offered him a 6 week trial with the possibility of a further contract after that. He really deserves his chance after all the hard work and commitment he has put into it.
Good luck Harry!! Date: 10TH October 2015 Away v Woodbank Result: lost 7-1 Hi All Away v Woodbank this week, who have been a bit of a bogey team for us over the last couple of years as we have never beaten them, even though we have been the better team in some of the games. We had a new player join us after Harry’s departure to Barnsley in Sandro Maczohan who had been training with us for the last couple of weeks We started quite well as Jacob Vitti seems to be getting back to his best after a good midweek training session and looked very lively, he also managed to get the first goal as a superb ball from Matt Haynes playing in centre midfield split the defence for Jacob to run onto, Jacob kept his calm and slotted the ball under the keeper. 0-1 We looked good with everything being chased down and fought for. Unfortunately we helped them back into the game as a ball from the our left was played into the middle Dan Nicholls outstretched foot sliced it up and over Tom in goal to give Woodbank the equaliser 1-1 Half time 1-1 The boys had panicked a bit after the equaliser and reverted to long ball instead of keeping calm and playing the good football we can, unfortunately this carried on in the second half and it wasn’t long before we conceded another, after this our heads dropped and there was no way back.
Page | 12
Full time 7-1 Man of the match – Tom George – pulled off a superb double save trying to keep us in the game. Special mention – Jacob Vitti – looks like he is getting back to his best and a very well taken goal which he made look easy Sandro Maczohan – welcome to the team hopefully will be a great addition once he gets up to speed of his team mates (and them him) My thoughts – panicked far too easy, let our football do the talking no hoof ball and hope for the best as this just gives the opposition the ball back and let them attacked us again! We lost to a very average team!! Next week back to basics with simple football
Date: 17TH October 2015 Home v Springhead Result: won 3-1 Hi All Home this week to Springhead, in the first reverse fixture of the season along with the only other team we have beaten this season so far. It had also been a tough we with a ‘clear the air’ talk midweek which I was hoping to bring the team together. We also received a bit of a confidence boost as Springhead only had 10 players!! We started well with Sandro Maczohan starting his first game for the club and the boys seemed up for the challenge we just need a little inspiration or luck and we got a bit of both, Sandro received a ball straight through the middle of the midfield without hesitation he turn and pushed it past the last defender, I thought he had over hit it but his amazing pace he got there just before the advancing keeper for him to prod home past the keeper 10 We were turning the screw a bit now with Jacob Vitti continuing his fine form from last week down the left, he almost scored as he chased a ball down used great strength to hold is man off and got a shot away with his left foot but was just over.
Page | 13
It wasn’t long before Jacob was involved again down the left after good work from midfield and again Jacob charged at goal this time his shot was on target from a narrow angle and the keeper could only parry back to Wilson Chiweshie to roll into the corner 2-0, The pressure was off us and you could hear the Springhead management team from both sides of the pitch shouting and arguing at anybody and everybody!!!! We kept the pressure on as Springhead heads started to drop and after some great short passing between Wilson and Ethan Littler, Wilson threaded the ball to Sandro who smashed the ball through the keeper 3-0 Half time 3-0 We always knew Springhead would come out fighting and fighting they did as I imagine their ears were ringing from there manager who was still shouting for Anything and everything along with having a go at the ref!! Springhead managed to pull one back as they escaped the offside trap by being offside but it not being given!!! The ref admitted he made a mistake after the game and he was offside?? 3-1 We still had chances and Ethan Littler could of come away with a hatrick after a couple of volleys from dead balls the first from Matt Newstead free kick his volley went just the wrong side of the post, then from Dan Nicholls free kick he didn’t quite connect and nothing came from it and the final chance from a great run through the midfield but Charley Was in an offside position otherwise he would have been one on one with the keeper. The last 10mins of the game we had to dig deep but Dan was superb at the back and after a through ball down the middle Tom George came out to close the player down but the forward pushed the ball past him and he thought all he had to do was roll the ball in for a goal but Dan had chased him back and blocked his shot with the help of the post!! Full time 3-1 Man of the match – Dan Nicholls played brilliant today he never gave up and won and chased everything words fail me about what a great player he is for the team Special mentions –
Sandro Maczohn – brilliant 2 goals along with a great performance Matt Haynes – great to see Matt back in the center of defence
Page | 14
My thoughts- after a tough week for the team this was the best reaction I could of hoped for, the team made it especially difficult for me today as everyone played their part and I didn’t want to make any subs as the players on pitch were magnificent, Well done and great win ď Š
