Pennsylvania Hospital
celebrates DIVERSITY!
At Pennsylvania Hospital, our employees and patients come from many different backgrounds and experiences and we are dedicated to creating a workforce reflective of our diverse patient population, as well as the communities we serve. The Cultural Competency Committee at Pennsylvania Hospital works to provide our staff with training, resources, and experiences to broaden cultural awareness and improve the patient care experience. That’s why on Aug. 17, the committee hosted its first-ever Diversity Day for staff and patients. “Diversity Day was designed to recognize and celebrate the diversity of Pennsylvania Hospital through love, fellowship, and friendship,” said Angel McCullough MSN, MBA, CCRN, NEA-BC, executive sponsor of the Cultural Competency Committee. `` PAH celebrates Diversity Day

There was a tremendous show of support from PAH employees, patient guests, and the surrounding community who stopped by to participate in the various activities, which included: Cultural Jeopardy Door prizes Raffle baskets celebrating different cultures Free water ice and pretzels Cultural flag and clothing displays “Diversity Day is only a glimpse of the inclusion and love exhibited every day at Pennsylvania Hospital,” said Cultural Competency Committee member Odinae Fisher. The Cultural Competency Committee is led by Tina Barnett, Patient Access; Jessica Strauss, RN, BSN, Labor and Delivery; and Shirley Puhiera RN, BSN, Cardiac Cath Lab. Under their leadership, this committee has worked tirelessly over the last six months to plan the very first Diversity Day event at Pennsylvania Hospital. The Cultural Competency Committee is just one of many committees led by the front line staff that allows them to bring to life their ideas of how they deliver care at Pennsylvania Hospital. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate PAH’s inaugural Diversity Day and stay tuned for more great events throughout the year!

Jody J. Foster, MD, receives the
award
ANNUAL EHRENZELLER On Tuesday, Sept. 13 Pennsylvania Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education Office in conjunction with the Ex-Residents Association honored Jody J. Foster, MD, with its annual Ehrenzeller Award. The award, named after Jacob Ehrenzeller, the first resident to train at Pennsylvania Hospital in 1773, is given every year to an outstanding former PAH resident who has excelled in his or her field and upheld the high quality of training at PAH.
“Dr. Foster is highly deserving of the Ehrenzeller Award given her long history at our institution, her excellence as a teacher and role model for trainees, and her administrative and leadership skills and accomplishments,” said David Mintzer, MD, secretary of the ExResidents Society at PAH. Foster is chair of the department of Psychiatry and medical director of Psychiatric Inpatient Services at PAH. She also leads the Professionalism Program at Penn Medicine as its executive clinical director and serves as the executive medical director of Penn Behavioral Health Corporate Services, a division of the Department of Psychiatry that includes its own employee assistance program and administrative services organization. Her clinical practice includes general psychiatry, with a special emphasis on treating acute inpatients, psychopharmacology, and corporate development that provides support and evaluation services to executives. After receiving her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in a combined and accelerated BA/MD program at Lehigh University, Foster completed both a residency and
a chief residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in clinical psychopharmacology and mood disorders at The Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital. She also attained her masters of business administration, with a concentration in finance, from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Foster is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a member of the American College of Psychiatrists and the American College of Physician Executives, and was elected to Penn Medicine's inaugural class of the Academy of Master Clinicians. Foster is a noted educator and has received The Dr. Henry P. & M. Page Durkee Laughlin Foundation’s National Psychiatric Endowment Award, The J. Martin Myers Award, The Earl Bond Award, The Blockley-Osler Award, and The Dean’s Award, all for clinical excellence and teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. She has also received numerous residency teaching awards and has been named a “Top Doc” by Philadelphia Magazine. Dr. Foster is board-certified in psychiatry and has served as an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. “Dr. Foster’s leadership in psychiatry at Pennsylvania Hospital has been outstanding over many years. Inpatient psychiatry remains critically important to the mission of the hospital and Dr. Foster has successfully led this key service into the 21st century in terms of clinical care, evidence-based practices, and education,” said Daniel Feinberg, MD, chief medical officer of PAH. Congratulations to Dr. Foster!
Nominate an Individual or Group for their
PATIENT SAFETY EFFORTS! Safety is always first at the nation’s first, but every day our team goes above and beyond to provide the best and safest practices in patient care. Now is the perfect time to recognize our achievements by nominating an individual or group that has demonstrated a personal commitment to patient safety for the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority’s "I Am Patient Safety" campaign. Each winner's patient safety efforts will be highlighted in the Authority's Annual Report and on posters that can be displayed throughout PAH. Each winner will also be recognized by the Patient Safety Authority Board of Directors and receive a celebration at their facility. For the past two years (out of the entire state of Pennsylvania), PAH staff and teams were selected as winners. Let’s continue our streak with a third year of inspiring nominations! To submit an award, please contact Liz Wentzel (elizabeth.wentzel@uphs.upenn.edu). Completed nominations are due by October 3, 2016.

Celebrate Penn Medicine Experience Week The second annual system-wide Penn Medicine experience week will take place from Oct. 10 to Oct. 14, 2016. With the theme of “Recognizing Your Excellence/Celebrating Your Success,” Penn Medicine Experience Week helps raise awareness about the many ways providers, faculty, and staff are changing lives throughout Penn Medicine — an effort that occurs 365 days a year. Penn Medicine Experience Week is one time when the 30,000-plus people who are Penn Medicine take a slight pause to celebrate each other for the important work that we do all year long to improve our patients’ experience. Penn Medicine Experience week will include several celebrations and events at Penn Medicine facilities across the organization and an active social media initiative, including the Changing Lives coloring page that will help you share the week on your favorite social media outlet. You can find more details about Penn Medicine Experience Week — and ideas on how you can celebrate with your team (including the downloadable coloring card) — by visiting pme.uphs.upenn.edu.
