Penn Nursing is recognized worldwide for excellence in education, research, and practice. We offer 15 different areas of focus for aspiring Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practice Specialist, and those pursuing advanced study in Nursing Administration.

Our students can also choose to pursue unique combined degrees. Many of our MSN programs are ranked number one in the country, including the Pediatric and Adult Nurse Practitioner programs and the Clinical Nurse Specialist program. Students also augment their curriculum with a minor in Adult Oncology, Behavioral Health, Forensics, Global Nursing, Informatics, Integrated Care of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Nursing Administration, Palliative Care, Quality Improvement and Safety, and Women’s Health. They seek flexibility in their study, and the ability to significantly enhance their capabilities in collaboration with the Wharton School of Business and the Master of Public Health Program.

The Doctoral Program: A Community of Scholars.

The mission of the PhD Program in Nursing is to prepare nurse scientists for successful careers in research-intensive environments.

To earn a PhD from Penn Nursing is to embark on one of the most rigorous and rewarding academic experiences. Our doctoral program prepares students to think creatively and proactively. Through our stateof-the-science curriculum, Penn Nursing doctoral students are thoroughly prepared to create, test, and implement ideas that will improve health care, change health and delivery systems, and determine the future of the profession. Graduates of the doctoral program go on to hold some of the most highly regarded leadership and research positions in government, academia, health systems, and industry—they are the innovators that shape the future of the nursing profession.

Doctoral students may also seek the additional challenge of a joint degree. Students can choose an MSN/PhD, MS/PhD, PhD in Nursing/ MBA from Wharton, or PhD in Nursing/MBE Bioethics.

About the Program The doctoral program requires 14 courses beyond the master’s degree, a Qualifying Examination, a Candidacy Examination, a defense of the dissertation, and Teaching and Research Residencies. Students have the option for full- or part-time study.

Doctoral Funding The School of Nursing is committed to assisting all full-time doctoral students for three years of tuition, fees, stipend, and health insurance.

The School of Nursing will provide partial funding to full-time doctoral students without external sources of funding beyond the 3 years of full funding support. Students who choose part-time enrollment are responsible for paying for their own tuition, fees, and health insurance.
