Each stu dent will write a paper on some aspect of the pre-World War I activities o f b th the Visiting Nurse So i ty and the Starr Centre that interests them m S1. These topics include everything fr m analysis of the diseases treated and the i n ~Lru ments used, to the role of Afric n-American nurses and hospitals, to housing conditions, to biographies of th founders. At the group level. the students are approaching the materials from two different angl s: fro m the perspective of Lhose delivering health care th rough the Visiting urse Society and Lhose receiving this care. inall , the enti re cl ass i. involved in bringing the site together to foml a conceptual and technical wh Ie. Thi is the fir st time any of these studen ts has worked in an archives . The CenLer'~ archives are an excellenL place for them lo begin their archi al experience--the materials ill the archi ves are interesting and wel l-organized without being 0 erwhelming. Ccn(l:r Curator Margo Szabunia pro vided an intT(lcluclory pre entati n and lour. lL is also important that !hi . arc hi v s has already made an impressive ommitmenl to rhe lise of computers and the Web to incre acce s to its mat rials. After the first visit, studenls were a bit aweSLruck and a bit unsure of how to make their way through the materials . But now that they are started, they are excited ab ul seeing and readi ng 'real" his torical ouree material . . History is coming alive for them in a way it did not before ! One studen t has already made a trip to South Philadelphia t tind the site of the original Starr Centre, and there is talk of including photographs of this site as well as of the Cli nton Street hom" of {he fow1der, Mrs. Jenks and orne of the home ' visited by the nurses.
