PROFESSOR OF GERONTOLOGY All in attendance al The Nightingale's Song Reception and Ntmiing Legacy Awards at the Phila delphia Museum of Art on October 4, 2000, agreed that it was nothing les . than a smashing success. A spirit of pride and enth usiasm was palpable as more than 350 people thronged Ihrough the packed gallery of images of nu e from the Ars Medica Collection and enjoyed bors d'oeuvres in the m useum's restaurant. We all took with us the memory of images that speak across time and for all lime, that in the words ofWiUiam Helfand in the exhibit catalog "provide abundant visual evidence of the care, nurture, and support nurses have always given to socielY, and ... their continuing commit ment to the bettennent of all." Ano d' Hamoncourt, Director of the Museum welcome everyone. • Wednesday Nighl Out" at the Mu eum ha long been a highlight of Philadelph ia' social, cene. 11 began several years ago as an attempt by the Mu cum l reach out to a hroader and younger audience. It i now considered a "happening" event. Each Wednesday evening, hundreds of visirors gather in the Museum's Great Hall to eal, dance to Ijve m usic. watch films, and enjoy gallery lours of a selected ex hibit whose theme sets the tone for the festivities. The Museum staff wanted The Nightjngale's Song as a Wednesday Night Out theme ea.rly in the exhi bit planning. The Center's Patricia. D' Amonio coordinated planning with them. The Museum had already selected a swing band, the Blackbird'. The Nightingale's Song, the Blackbirds' music, swing dancing in tructor , and, given swing's historical heyday, tbe theme of "NUT. ing in the 20' ',30's and 40' ," eve thing el e feB quickly into place. Given the exhibit's inevitable emphasi on war time nursing. what movie other than Claudette Colbert's So Proudly We Hail would work? (continued on page 4)

The evening's turnout surpassed our expCCL.'l.tions. We plann d special tours of The Nig htingale's Song fo r the nu rsing organizations, alumn i asso ciations and the two busload of our own School of Nursing tudents, ac companied by Interim Dcttn , Neville Strumpf. We were unprepared fo r the overfl ow crowds of general visitors who came for the evening's scheduled gallery tours. At one po int, the most Pat, who led the gallery lOurs, could do was ask people to move their beads becau e there wa no room to move their bodies. Tbe public' , response to The Nightingale's Song during Ihis one event does remind u of the transcendence of nursing. There was much of consid erable arti tic merit in the e. hi bit. But there was more that reminded us of the m aningful way in which nur ing touches us al l.

APPRECIATING CHARLES

E.

ROSENBERG

This year we must take note of a major change in our lives here on the Penn cam pus. Ow' colleagues Charle Rosenberg and Drew Faust (who are. for readers beyond the Schuylkill , husband and wife) have relocated to Cambridge, Massachusetts and Harvard Uni versity . We miss them both. For Chronicle readers, we want to take pecial note of some of the many ways Charles helped ma e the Center and its works a reality. He promi es to continu his service on the Center'. Advisory Board so this is nol a "goodbye" message; instead. it is a much deserved appreciation . Before accepting his current Profes 'orship in the History of Science Department at Harvard, Charles was the Janice and Julian Bers Professor of Hi tory and Socio logy of Sci nee at Penn_ He is the author of a series of infl uential books, starting with The Cholera Ye ars , firs t published in 1962 and stil l in print. No Other Gods: On Science and American Social Thought, The Care aI Strangers: The Rise oI Ameri a's Ho pilar System. and Explaining Epidemics and O/her Stlldies in th e History of Medicine will be fami liar to many readi ng thjs note. Edited books and articles published during Charles' ti me here at Penn influenced and chal lenged all of us who work in history. But we are writing about Charles because he is a good professor and a good friend. Good professors are inspiring teachers, open to students, provoke their best work, listen t them, never talk down to th · m, and never become jaded with it all. Good friends help their olleagues get on with scholarship, encourage projects that some might th ink fruitless. share ideas and contacts, remain loyal for the long run and make academic life the fu n that it is. We al 0 apprec iate Charles because, as a go d profes sor and a good friend, he really was instrumental in our own profess i nal growth and development and, ind ed, in the very foundin", of our Center. For the last twenty y a Charle served on OUT doctoral students' committees (putti ng up with the vagarie of s 'hool o f nursing processes), advised facu lty on re search problems, a lively assisted the Advisory Board in its work. and all the while modeled exemplary, innovative. and meaningful historical scholarship. Last DecembeT, Charles made a gift to the Center of 127 books from his wn hi tory library. By this single stroke he elevated our ex elient collection of books to an exemplary level. So, this i our public thanks to Charles E. Rosenberg. We expect and look forwa rd to many more years of working together.
