The patron and the perfumer Welcome to this edition of Connect. Summer is just around the corner and our gardens are awash with colour and vibrancy. 2017 has already been an exciting and inspiring year. I’m thrilled to introduce you to our new patron, Tara Arkle (nee Newley). Tara, who is Dame Joan Collins’ daughter, discovered us after her aunt, bestselling author Jackie Collins, passed away from breast cancer in 2015 and named us UK beneficiary in lieu of flowers. We were doubly delighted that Tara – at our recent Ladies’ Long Table Lunch – presented this year’s Jackie Collins Inspirational Woman Award to perfumer Jo Malone. You can read more about this wonderful event on page 8. Earlier this year, we launched our new website with the aim to make getting help and getting involved that much easier. Please take a look and let us know what you think.
We have also seen our free services become available in new regions of the UK, including Brighton and Wakefield. Our Bristol Whole Life Approach is now reaching many more people thanks to the amazing efforts of our dedicated supporters. If you want to get involved, why not take part in our summer fundraiser – Bake a Difference – or why not check out our other fundraising events online?
Internet sensation After more than a year of planning, building, content writing, snapping photos, testing, user feedback and final fixes – we’re proud to unveil our shiny new website. The modern, user-friendly www.pennybrohn.org.uk makes understanding our work, booking on courses and discovering the next fundraising event that much simpler. We will be adding more interactive content such as guided videos, on activities like yoga, qi gong and relaxation, so you can practice at home what you’ve learnt through the Bristol Whole Life Approach.
Our CEO Laura Kerby said:
“ This was the largest digital project we’ve ever undertaken and we’re delighted with the results – we hope you are too.”
Best wishes

New courses welcomed in Wakefield Our UK-wide expansion continues, with new West Yorkshire courses at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. The services, thanks to great partnerships with Macmillan Information Centre and MidYorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, and £3,000 from Bradford-based Sovereign Health Care, sit alongside our Kirklees facilities.
Spring greens & quinoa risotto Tara’s mouth-watering menu marks patronage We are thrilled to welcome Dame Joan Collins’ daughter Tara Arkle as a celebrity patron. The writer, presenter and campaigner has created a healthy menu, with help from us, to celebrate the news and remember her dad Anthony Newley and aunt, Jackie Collins, who both sadly died of cancer. Tara discovered Penny Brohn after Jackie named us UK beneficiary in lieu of flowers following her death in 2015.
We identified a need for more psychological/emotional support for people with cancer in the area, so have tailored our Introduction sessions to address some of these elements. Clinical nurses will promote our Bristol Whole Life Approach as part of each person’s Holistic Needs Assessment and Care and Support Plan. “Their passing galvanised me to live healthily and do my bit to fight cancer. I was delighted to see how Penny Brohn changes lives and shares my passion for healthy eating. It’s a reciprocal relationship – it was only natural I became a patron.”
Tara’s signature main, spring-loaded with spring greens, is awash with vibrant colours and flavours. Serves: 4 Prep and cooking time: 30-40 mins
Ingredients 1-2tbsp coconut oil 1-2tsp fennel and caraway seeds, pestle/mortar to break seeds 1 red onion, finely chopped 1 leek, finely chopped 2 celery sticks, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced or finely chopped 120g/cup quinoa 1 small glass white wine 1ltr homemade chicken or veg stock 4 handfuls spring greens, tough stems removed, leaves finely shredded 4 handfuls frozen peas 1 cup pomegranate seeds (optional)
For the seasoning Black pepper Grated zest, one lime Juice of ½-1 lime 1-2 handfuls fresh herbs, such as parsley, coriander, thyme and mint, finely chopped 100g grated pecorino cheese and/or 400g tin flageolet beans, drained Method Heat the coconut oil in a wide-based pan. Add the fennel/caraway seeds and fry for one min. Add the onion, celery, leek and garlic, and gently fry for 3-4 mins to soften. Add quinoa and stir until well coated with the mixture. Turn up heat, add the wine and stir continuously until it fully evaporates. Add the finely shredded greens and peas, stir to combine. Add a ladle of stock, stir until absorbed. Continue to add remaining stock a few ladles at a time, until quinoa is cooked (this may take around 15 mins). Stir through chopped herbs, lime juice and zest, pomegranate and season with pepper. Add flageolet beans (optional), before spooning into bowls and top with grated cheese.
Health Benefits Leafy greens and pulses are high in calcium and magnesium, for healthy bones, teeth and arteries (heart health). The spices are anti-microbial and digestive supporting, whilst onions, leeks and garlic are immune supporting. Pomegranate seeds have antioxidant benefits and quinoa is a gluten-free source of vitamin B, which aids a healthy nervous system.

£95k strengthens services We are overjoyed to receive £95,000 from Simplyhealth to reach thousands more people in 2017. Some of the grant is funding a new service, with Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer Service (TYA), to adapt our free, leading Living Well course for South West young people and their parents.
In addition, we are increasing the number of Follow On appointments – 480 individual appointments across the UK – with doctors, counsellors and nutritionists to ensure people are never alone and continue to live as well as possible. The final portion of the grant is for Treatment Support Clinic – 46 clinics of tailored expert support (oncologist, psychologist, nutritionist, group self-help) designed to help anyone who is preparing for, undergoing or recovering from chemo or radiotherapy.
What a difference a day makes

Pay for a Day gives you the opportunity to choose a day that is special to you and give 24 hours that could make all the difference to someone with cancer. Manic May weekend A cavalcade of comedians
A giant hip, hip hooray for Manic May Weekend – Long Table Lunch, Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea and Comedy Night (May 19-21) – which raised a phenomenal £85,000.
Comedian Mark Olver rallied his comedy pals, including Sally-Anne Hayward, to finish off the weekend. The gang, led by 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You star, Mark, induced raucous laughter and rapturous applause. The abundant audience also enjoyed a bar, nibbles and raffle.
Pioneering perfumer presented with prize Prominent perfumer Jo Malone MBE was delighted to receive the Jackie Collins Inspirational Woman Award at our sell-out Ladies’ Long Table Lunch.
Jo, who received the award from our patron Tara Arkle, then held an In Conversation sharing her story with guests.
Jo, who beat breast cancer in 2003, created Jo Malone London in her kitchen in 1988, with just 12 clients. The entrepreneur evolved the brand globally and sold it to Estée Lauder in 1999. She received the MBE in 2008 for services to the beauty industry and launched her latest brand Jo Loves in 2011.
Over 250 women also enjoyed host BBC Points West presenter Alex Lovell, a three-course meal, auctions, prizes and client’s moving speech at our National Centre.
Hat’s entertainment The hat-trick of entertainment continued with our Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea. Hundreds of hatted people grinned like a Cheshire cat in our Alice in Wonderland-inspired garden marquee. Guests enjoyed bubbly, sandwiches, cakes, and scones while hearing from Diane, our guest speaker. ITV West Country weatherman Bob Crampton hosted, with green poet Martin Kiszko as our magnificent Mad Hatter.
These events were only possible thanks to County Marquees who donated the marquee for free. 8

People power for Penny Brohn Luminaries lead Living Well Conference Several leading health experts helped make our 7th-annual Living Well Conference at our National Centre the most successful. In February, over 70 delegates enjoyed speakers including NHS England’s Prof Alf Collins and Ian Benson discussing topics such as self-care, the NHS and future of healthcare. We also highlighted our involvement in the NHS England-funded Realising the Value (RtV), which examined ways to empower people and communities to self-manage their health. Penny
Brohn was chosen to lead the selfmanagement strand of the project. An analysis of RtV’s economic model shows that £950 million could be saved nationally if peer-support and self-management interventions were delivered at scale, as well as £4.5 billion in wider social benefits. It also shows that around £13,700 in wider social benefits is generated per Penny Brohn Living Well course participant.
Doctor accepts directorship We are delighted to announce that Dr Catherine Zollman has been appointed as our Medical Director. Catherine will further develop our integrative health and wellbeing materials, whilst helping to innovate the Bristol Whole Life Approach to living well with cancer. Catherine has been involved with Penny Brohn since 2005, alongside being a part-time NHS GP in Bristol. Her passion to develop and educate 10

We thank every runner, including our fastest, Dan Blackall in 39:20, for going the distance and our platoon of purplebedecked volunteers. The race also celebrated our continuing partnership with Anderson Financial Management, which became our event partner to ensure the 10k was our most successful to date.

A positive Approach Hockey sticks it to cancer for Abby GB and England hockey stars – including Rio Olympic gold medallists – helped a fundraising festival raise over £6,700 to remember teammate and Penny Brohn client Abby Webb. Buckingham Ladies Hockey Club and England U16 star Abby Webb died of neuroendocrine cancer just before her 25th birthday in 2015. We helped Abby retain her smile even during the darkest times. Her dying wish was for everyone to fundraise for us. GB and England star Zoe Shipperley and Abby’s old PE teacher Phil Arnold organised the festival at Stowe School, Abby’s sixth form, in May. The successful day included an 11-a-side memorial match and 24 mixed teams of seven competing in a half-pitch tournament. Hockey stars included Sarah Haycroft, Hollie Webb, Susie Gilbert, Georgie Twigg and Jo Hunter. GB and England men’s keepers George Pinner and James Fair also hosted a penalty shoot-out and the event ended with live music. 12
“ The Approach course gave me chance to stop and catch up with myself and all that’s happened to me” – Steve Our free, two-day residential Approach course, at our National Centre, helps deepen and personalise what you learnt on Living Well. You explore further how our self-help techniques can work for you, and can have a one-to-one with a doctor and
nutritional therapist. You also explore what happens when you’re stressed and how stress-management can support your immune system as well as ways to cope with the emotional impact of cancer. To book, call 0303 3000 118 press 1.

“ We all loved Abby – we wanted to do something to remember her, for Penny Brohn – a charity close to her heart, and to raise hockey’s profile. Abby wouldn’t have wanted something sombre, but a long, fun day of hockey, laughs and entertainment.” To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/ hockeyfestival4abby
Bound for Brighton In May, we successfully launched our free, two-day Living Well course at the stunning 18th-century Georgian manor, Stanmer House – a stone’s throw from central Brighton. The almost sell-out sessions covered areas such as the emotional and psychological impacts of cancer and its treatment, managing stress, healthy eating and exercise, before, during or after treatment.

Your Will, your way Did you know that over 50% of people in the UK do not have a Will? This means that the law will decide how your estate is passed on after you die – and this may not be in-line with your wishes.
Sally’s supportive CD Singer-songwriter client Sally Larkin is producing a CD to sell for Penny Brohn after we supported her husband Chris Jones, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016, and herself. Sally, who has over 30 years’ industry experience including working with Peter Gabriel and Sharon Redd, has created 10-track Life and Other Songs, with Access to Music colleagues and students. Our Penny Brohn Community Choir feature on two tracks.
“The ballad Life is inspired by the charity and is me at my most personal. I wrote Walk the Walk just prior to Chris’ diagnosis and didn’t know the significance until I visited Penny Brohn and heard how charity Walk the Walk avidly supports them. This serendipitous fact made the project seem ‘meant to be’.” 14
The cost of making a single Will is just £89 or £99 for a mirror Will (both fees include VAT). In addition, we receive a donation of 20% from LawVault for each Will sold. To access an easy-to-complete questionnaire, please visit our partner website Wills@PennyBrohnUK at www.lawvault.co.uk/pennybrohnuk.
Four acres of fun
She said: “Penny Brohn’s special – it’s greatly helped Chris and myself. “The album’s a mix of classic soul, funk, jazz, Latin and ’60’s pop. Expect songs with love, passion, life and longing, with uplifting, beautiful melodies, harmonies, beats and lyrics.
We know writing a Will can seem like a daunting task, so we’ve partnered with LawVault, an online Will-writing initiative that makes writing a legally binding Will, easy and affordable. Don’t delay. Having a Will will save your family unnecessary distress at an already difficult time.
Sally is crowdfunding for £1,500 to cover mastering and pressing 1,000 CDs, and digital downloads. The album, likely to cost around £10, launches at our National Centre on July 1 from 4pm-8pm.
