PORTFOLIO OF PENG HUILIN SELECTED WORKS 2014-2018

CONTEXT ABSTRACT The portfolio includes four undergraduate interior design projects from 2014 to 2018, illustrating my progress I have made in design. The four projects all share the same design concern on how to satisfy specific people's spiritual needs. By utilizing installation design methods in interior design, it not only makes the design full of imagination but also integrates the human spiritual needs with interior design, achieving an exciting balance point.

MAD HATTER

The University of Edinburgh 2016 Atelier Design Project Instructor: E dward Hollis, Sam Grinsell Site: 3 Bristo Pl, Edinburgh EH1 1EY Individual Work The project is to convert a church, built in 1900 in Edinburgh, into an atelier for a milliner designer - Harvy Santos. It will focus on how to deal with the relationship between new and old, preserving the historical features while having a beautiful design at the same time. The reason I named this project Mad Hatter is that Harvy Santos' hats are always crazy and bizarre, which reminds me the Mad Hatter in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and I try to follow his style to design the studio. The hat studio will not only provide the service of hat custom design but also let the people participate in the process of designing and making their hats.

The historical features in the building are always contrary to the design, such as staircase with green glazed Art Nouveau dado tiling, pipe organ in the main gallery, which is old-fashioned and unexpected to see in the design. As for these issues, I use several layers of glass overlaying together to make the historical features blurry and indistinct, as well as prevent people from touching the old objects. Moreover, the pieces of glass are in different colours. When they are overlaying piece by piece, they create diverse colour changes. By this way, it could become walls, handrails and effective protection of historical features.

INSTALLATION DEVELOPMENT The installation suspended in the double high space on the third floor is the highlight filling the space. This inspiration comes from Harvoy Santos‘s design concept which is trying to capture the sense of the motion of subjects. I use elements of two of his hat collections, TITLED BIRDY and RAIN REIN REIGN, which are feathers and loops.

T

he function of the studio is not only designing and making hats but also inviting people and imparting knowledge on how to make hats. There is a design lab on the second floor, inviting customers to engage in designing their hats, selecting materials they like and even making the base of their hat-pieces.

The University of Edinburgh 2015 Flagship Store Project Instructor: Rachel Simmonds Site: K11 Shopping Mall, Shanghai, China Individual Work

The flagship store is designed for a high-end fashion brand Viktor and Rolf, located in K11 shopping mall, Shanghai. Under the influence of Chinese traditional culture, women in China are often shy and introverted. When designing flagship stores, I encouraged women to express themselves bravely. One of the most beautiful moments of women is when they are in new clothes, and they should be confident to share with others. Consequently, my design highlighted the dressing rooms where usually are ignored by designers and users. My goal is to deliver the confidence to every customer who comes in the stores and makes them show themselves. No matter young or old, beautiful or not, if a female is confident, she will be the most pretty one.

The couture collections shown below are the well-known ones, they are like wearable art pieces. In my opinion, I prefer to use new elements in the rencent collections to repensent V&R 's artistic characteristic and at the same time to refresh customers' impression.

HIGHLIGHTING DRESSING ROOM AND ENCOURAGING FEMALE TO SHOW THEMSELVES Most shops, nowadays, put the dressing room in the most secret corner, hiding the beauties from the public. I designed the dressing room as a stage and turned dressing rooms into the installation with retro dress looking appearance, slowly rotating on the stage like girls dancing, moving a private space used to be hidden in the corner to a conspicuous public place. Consequently, when women put on new clothes, they will be able to come out and share it with friends or even strangers, instead of enjoying the look by themselves in a narrow space.

The fabric is the basic element of fashion design. In my opinion, all dresses are made of layers of fabric. I directly bring this thought into my design, using numerous pieces of soft white cloth to surround the space and creating a sense of depth and layering. Golden picture frame, an element used in famous V&R 2015 COUTURE, becomes the functional and decorative object. It's distorted, going up and down and working as clothes stand, coat hanger, table and even handrail of a stair.

The numerous layers of soft fabric are a contrast to the hard objects such as walls and columns. This store avoids using inevitable walls to divide the space. Instead, it utilizes the soft clothes which function as walls, creating a gentle feel to the female customers.

The University of Edinburgh 2014 Catwalk Design Project

Architectural style: Victorian Venetian Renaissance and modern

Instructor: Rachel Simmonds Site: National Museum of Scotland

Building Background

Individual Work THE WALK is a film talking about a story of a high-wire artist's walk between the Twin Towers. He chased his dream, while others regarded him as a bizarre man. However, he finally made a striking achievement, which reminds me of the fashion designers who are struggling to achieve their dreams and facing the difficulties bravely. The inspiration of my design comes from this film-THE WALK.

National Museum of Scotland

The National Museum of Scotland, including the Royal Museum building and the museum of Scotland, in central Edinburgh, was formed in 2006. the Museum of Scotland is housed in a modern building opened in 1998, while the former Royal Museum building was begun in 1861, with a Victorian Venetian Renaissance facade and a grand central hall of cast iron construction that rises the full height of the building.

Cast Iron Structure LOW LOAD BEARING CAPACITY The Grand Gallery of the former Royal Museum is the site of this project, with a cast iron construction. It was a prominent style in the Industrial Revolution era when cast iron became relatively cheap and modern steel had not yet been developed. Cast iron is not a good structural material for handling tension or bending moments because of its brittleness and relatively low tensile strength.

Cloud Cloud Swing

I replace the chairs with swings to imitate the sense of swing in the film. Moreover, I want to invite the audience to participate in the catwalk show, so I add an interactive installation. Line Line

The ropes of swings are connected to the clouds. Without people sitting, clouds in the middle will stay at a low position, making models cannot walk on the catwalk. When people sit on The the swings, Walk the weight of them will pull up the clouds slowly.

04 DIGITAL EXISTENCE

The University of Edinburgh 2017-2018 Graduation Project Instructor: Steve Go, MinJoo Bai Site: Longemont Shopping Mall

(Changning Road, No. 1018, Changning District, Shanghai, China )

Individual Work

Digital Existence envisions the future VR experience. Based on the well-developed VR technology, more and more VR films have been released and people can now travel freely in the world of VR with a pair of VR glasses. It makes me wonder how people will be entertained in the future. Instead of going to the ordinary cinema, people will be more interested in full-view VR films; they might find their existence in the world of VR, just like the characters in the film Ready Player One. Therefore, I decided to name this project ‘DIGITAL EXISTENCE.’ I hope to cooperate with VOID as they are the pioneer of free-walking VR games with advanced VR positioning technology. This project assumes THE VOID as my client and they are going to have a branch in Shanghai soon.

VR WORLD

FOCUS ON PSYCHOLOGICAL SUGGESTION The VR experience center is a place where there are two worlds existing together. The virtual world is related to game design which will be provided by client THE VOID. What I would like to focus on is the entrance sequence and experience. How to gradually lead and guide people to a brand new world is the focus of my design, rather than the VR game areas.

METAPHOR - CONNECTION BETWEEN VR WORLD AND REALITY The VR world and reality world are like two parallel universes.

REAL

Digital Existence is the place breaking the boundary of the two worlds. What I want to do is to tear a hole in this piece of paper, creating a space tunnel which would lead you to an unknown world.
