Suicide is a major public health problem. The psychological pain that leads each of these individuals to take their lives is unimaginable. Their deaths leave families and friends bereft, and often have a major ripple effect on communities. Suicide is the fifth leading causes of death among those aged 30-49 years in 2012 globally, and is the second leading cause of death in the 15-29 years age group in 2012 globally. Overall, it is estimated that during 2012 for each adult who died of suicide there were 27 others who made suicide attempts. Call for 2014 Project Proposals The Grassland and Rangeland Enhancement Program (GREP) provides funds to persons and organizations wishing to carry out activities on Crown Land that will enhance Rangeland and Grassland values. The program is funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and administered locally by the Kootenay Livestock Association. The GREP is currently accepting project proposals for consideration for the remainder of 2014 and for the upcoming 2015 funding year. The overriding purpose of the Grassland and Rangeland Enhancement Program is to maintain and/or enhance grassland resources while meeting conservation, environmental and recreational objectives. Some examples of projects funded to date under the GREP include rangeland fences, protection of wetlands, innovative gates and cattle-guards, restoration of damaged areas, interpretive and educational signs and invasive plant management. Applications are open to associations or societies, individuals, range tenure holders or partnerships across the Columbia Basin Region. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gudela (Judy) Hentschel on August 5th at Mountain Lake Seniors Community in Nelson. Judy was born in Mufundi, Tanzania, the youngest of three children. She had many fond memories of her childhood on a coffee and tea plantation. Her family was forced to return to Germany during World War II. Judy eventually took an agriculture course, then later moved to Canada and received training as a practical nurse in Sarnia, Ontario. Judy was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1963. She moved to Kaslo in 1978, where she became known for her loving generosity. She lived a very modest, environmentally friendly lifestyle, nurturing her small garden, teaching others about the Bible’s promise of Paradise, and providing a living demonstration of real Christian love.

Judy is survived by her loving brother, Hartfried, in Sarnia, Ontario, and a niece in Germany. She will be sincerely missed by her family of fellow believers throughout British Columbia. A memorial service was held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Nelson, on August 9th. Call Out To Internet Service Providers Serving The Basin Columbia Basin Trust is reaching out to identify smallto medium-sized local and regional Internet service providers (ISPs) that are interested in expanding connectivity and/or upgrading existing infrastructure to meet new federal standards for broadband in the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions. This appeal is being done in cooperation with the Regional Broadband Committee, comprised of the regional districts of Central Kootenay, Kootenay Boundary, East Kootenay and Columbia Shuswap, the Village of Valemount and the Ktunaxa Nation Council. Through the Digital Canada 150: Connecting Canadians initiative, the Canadian government has recently committed to $305 million in funding. More details of the

federal program and criteria for applications are expected to be released in the fall, but the Trust is working with partners and stakeholders to develop strategies to take advantage of funding. The Trust has identified some immediate priorities which include: • Establishing which ISPs are interested in collaborating with the Trust to pursue funding under the federal program. • Encouraging ISPs to update Industry Canada mapping data to confirm eligibility for federal funding before the Industry Canada deadline of August 30. Catch Dinner! August has been a great month for fishing rainbows in Kootenay Lake. A friend of mine loves to fish around Woodbury Creek. Several times a week she grabs her kayak, heads out just a little offshore and throws out a line.
