Rock Your World With A Lapidary Course Beginner and experienced rockhounds have an opportunity this month to expand their knowledge of working with rocks and gems as the VISAC Gallery in Trail presents a four-session course on cutting and polishing semi-precious or just plain pretty stones. Long-time local rock and gem craftsman Russ Olson will present four weekly two-hour sessions starting at 7 pm on either Monday, November 10 or Wednesday, November 12, depending on student preference. The cost is $75, plus $5 for materials. All sessions will be held in the VISAC Gallery’s lapidary room. Some of the topics to be covered include cabochon, which relates to the flat cutting and polishing of stone for mounting on a ring or pendant; mosaic stones; opal triplets, which involves sandwiching the stone between a black base and a quartz cap for protection; rock beads; and knife handles. cont’d on pg 36

Selkirk College will showcase student talent and celebrate community partnerships at the annual Gala 2014. This year’s gala theme is Partnerships in Success and the college is inviting all its supporters to join in the special evening at Nelson’s Mary Hall on November 22. “Selkirk College is built and maintained on partnerships,” says Joleen Kinakin, Selkirk College’s Donor Services Coordinator. “From support in the business community to co-op programs for students to community organizations across the West Kootenay-Boundary, the college would not exist without these important bonds.” The annual event is an important opportunity for students to host a night of amazing food, great entertainment and top-notch service. Students enrolled in the Professional Cook Training Program, Resort & Hotel Management Program and Professional Music & Technology Program all play a key role in making the fantastic evening come alive. The gala includes a tantalizing four-course meal prepared by the Professional Cook Training Program students and served by the Resort & Hotel Management Program students. The dinner will be followed by a dance that includes music from the Contemporary Music & Technology Program students. Another important element of the evening is the silent and live auction. This year’s auction is being coordinated by the Selkirk Saints hockey team and will include more than 100 items donated by community supporters. “We’re pleased to have the Saints play an important role in this year’s gala,” says Kinakin. “These young men are tremendous ambassadors of our college and our region. They provide a source of pride with their winning ways and their outreach in the community.” Tickets for Gala 2014 are $70 per person or $520 for a table of eight. Special Olympics Nelson For the past three years, the Special Olympics Nelson Local has held an annual bake sale and silent auction that has raised over $1300 per year. The funds have been used to take players to compete in numerous tournaments, and the soccer team competed in the provincial games that were held in Langley in 2013. This year, the Local would like to start a snowshoe team which could compete at the regional games this winter. There will be a fundraiser for this at the Nelson Leafs’ game on November 29. The organizers are asking for a donation of merchandise or service that can be used in the bake sale or silent auction. Any cash donation over $20 can be issued a tax receipt. The funds raised will be put towards travel to regional competitions as well as hosting local bowling and annual bocce tournaments. Selkirk College Saints Triumph The defending BC Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) Champion Selkirk College Saints have proven they are tough to beat at home after defeating the Eastern Washington University Eagles for the third straight time in as many games. Unlike in the previous week when a dramatic victory was earned in the final seconds, on Saturday night at the Castlegar & District Community Complex it was all Saints, all game. Selkirk College flew out of the gates with a relentless attack that saw them find the scoreboard four times in the first nine minutes. harlie (Morris Thomas) Kerfoot ( July 18, 1935 - October 22, 2014) passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings, and also his loving wife of 55 years, Marilyn, in May of 2012. fter Mom’s passing, Dad came into his own. He was often seen zooming up the Slocan Valley, Castlegar, Nelson and even Grand Forks in his van, visiting his many family members and friends. Dad never complained! He was a hard worker and a very capable man. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. He showed his love to us all by doing things for us. We all have stories of Dad working on our homes, fixing our cars, cutting our firewood, even babysitting our dogs. One of Dad’s enjoyments in life was playing crib. During his last game with his daughter Deb he scored a 23 hand. He decided that would be a good hand to end on. e love you dad and we are going to miss you deeply. Until we meet again Pops! Terrestrial Compensation Program The Waneta Expansion Limited Partnership (WELP), a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust, is accepting applications for the 2015 Waneta Terrestrial Compensation Program (WTCP). This program provides a total of $50,000 annually to projects in the Waneta area that promote conservation and restoration through research, physical works, and other on-the-ground or applied projects. “They will be learning how to cut and polish stones, make custom jewellery they can wear such as belt buckles, pendants, and earrings,” Olson said. “The appeal is that they are leaning a craft that has unlimited ways you can go.” Other possible applications include the creation of lamps similar to stained glass creations, rock vases, mixed media creations involving stone and other materials such as wood, casting gold and silver, and tinsmithing. Although there are a few local specimens of interest, such as serpentine from Rossland, the mineralization present in most West Kootenay rock formations makes them unattractive for small lapidary work. Most of the specimens Olson crafts come from the Okanagan, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. If you are interested in signing up for the course call Olson at 250-368-5488 to confirm the starting date.
