The event usually allows for people to start eating just after the haggis is presented. At the end of the meal, a series of toasts, often including a ‘Toast to the Lassies’ and replies are made. 2019 Polar Plunge makes big splash! The Langham Cultural Society’s annual fundraiser and community event the Polar Bear Plunge was a huge success on New Year’s Day 2019. Over a 100 residents came out to watch some 40 brave plungers have a lovely wee dip in Kootenay Lake. The event raised over $4,500 for the Langham’s arts, culture and heritage programs. Fred died suddenly in an accident on December 15, 2018. We have lost a truly unique person. Fred grew up in Ontario, and in his travels as a young man he found the Kootenays. A floor layer by trade, he became a “milly,” working for Meadow Creek Cedar for many years. After the mill closed, he moved back to Ontario, but before long was back in the Kootenays. Fred lived enthusiastically and loved to laugh. He enjoyed fishing, motorcycles, wrenching on his endless fleet of vehicles, a good book (especially cowboy novels). The internet occupied him for hours and he loved spending time with friends. He was knowledgeable, loyal and hardworking; he seldom forgot a birthday and was always willing to lend a hand – a kind and true friend. Fred cherished his mother Jean, who he leaves along with his sisters Pat and Susie, brother John, nieces and nephews, and his Kootenay family. He is loved and deeply missed. May he be at peace in his next journey; he will always be in our hearts.

Selkirk College is taking part in the BC Cool Campus Challenge, a province wide initiative to reduce natural gas use this heating season. Post-secondary institutions across the province are challenging each other to reduce natural gas use and encouraging campus community members to commit to take energy conservation actions by signing the BC Cool Campus Pledge. Institutions currently participating include: University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Selkirk College, University of Victoria and Thompson Rivers University. Public institutions have taken this opportunity to be community leaders and start a conversation on energy dependency and resiliency. “This challenge is an example of how collaboration can address concerns about energy use,” says Selkirk College Sustainability Coordinator Laura Nessman. “Natural gas is 2019 FACILITIES a limited non-renewable resource. Locavore’s Feast at the Vallican

Late January. The light is slowly returning and the snow is deep. Cabin fever is setting in. Where-ohwhere will we find an old friend or neighbour to commiserate with? Why, the annual Winter Locavore’s Feast, of course! Hosted by the Vallican Whole, what’s also known as the ‘100 Mile Potluck’ is happening this year on Saturday, January 26. Featuring an abundant potluck spread of ‘as local as possible’ goodies, drinks for sale and the celebrated ‘Six Slocan Minutes’, it is a sweet and special night to reconnect with old friends and neighbours and share your stories with the community. Admission is a donation to the Vallican Whole and a potluck dish. Come at 5:30 to get yourself a good seat, the meal is served at 6 pm and is followed by a smorgasbord of performance, storytelling and silliness from local community members. Anyone who so desires is welcome to take the stage for six (that’s only 6!) minutes of fame – stay too long at your peril, because Gary is dusting off the long hook. This year, organizers have enlisted a few special acts to complement the open mic. Much loved valley songstresses Betty Supple and Sally T will be debuting some new music, local playwright and actor Marya Folinsbee is sharing a short one-woman play and the Slocan Valley Community Choir will bring us all to tears with their harmonies. Come prepared with your own song, story, rant, rave, dance, skill, or ventriloquist dummy and share the stage! There may be a little live auction action too, to help keep the Whole out of the hole. What is a locavore, exactly? If herbivores eat plants, locavore’s eat local. In the spirit of celebrating the sleeping seeds and weeds of summertime, attendees are asked to bring a dish made with locally-sourced ingredients. Cook enough to serve your own party and a few more, to help ensure that everyone will get a full plate. Don’t worry if not every grain of salt was hand-harvested in the Kootenays, it is the spirit of local food and farmers we are celebrating, not the dogma. Nelson gets a special dog Members Lindsay Eastwood and Freyja (search dog) of Nelson Search and Rescue have successfully received their validation with the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA), this past week. They have worked incredible hard over the last two years to achieve this validation and become the second validated team in the region alongside Andy Lewis and his dog Jungle with Rossland Search and Rescue. Rescue is very proud of Lindsay and Freyja and the work they do to help others.Lindsay has been a professional dog handler for many years and has a second dog named Exie who is a veteran rescue dog that was retired early due to an eye sight issue. Darkwoods Conservation Area to grow A large tract of protected lands stretches between Nelson and Creston, including areas managed by the Province of British Columbia and the Darkwoods Conservation Area, owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). Yet one area within Darkwoods – the Next Creek watershed – remains unprotected. This is about to change, as NCC is one step closer to purchasing the land with $650,000 in support from Columbia Basin Trust. Once the purchase of the Next Creek area is complete, it will increase the overall size of Darkwoods by 14%, to nearly 630 square kilometres. Combined with the other protected lands between Nelson and Creston, the network of conservation lands and protected areas will total about 1,100 square kilometres. Conserving large tracts of land with a wide variety of connected habitat types is beneficial for wildlife, as well as water quality and has other ecological values. In 2008, the Trust and several other organizations helped NCC purchase the Darkwoods Conservation Area. This was the largest private land acquisition for conservation ever undertaken in Canada and still is. “Securing this land for present and future generations of Basin residents will protect its current ecosystems, help prevent further deterioration and introduce restoration and enhancement,” said Johnny Strilaeff, Columbia Basin Trust President and Chief Executive Officer. “This will have significant benefits for many species, including species of concern like whitebark pine, grizzly bear and wolverine.” The Darkwoods expansion project is part of a $25-million initiative to increase NCC’s conservation impact in the Canadian Rockies region. Recently the governments of Canada and BC announced a contribution of $14.65 million to this initiative, which will support the acquisition of the Next Creek area in Darkwoods. NCC is actively fundraising to fulfill its goal and complete the expansion of Darkwoods. “Conserving the Next Creek watershed and expanding Darkwoods represents the fulfillment of a conservation vision that started over a decade ago,” said Nancy Newhouse, BC Regional Vice President, Nature Conservancy of Canada. “We are grateful for the continued support of Columbia Basin Trust.
