2019 Flood response plan A consultant is preparing a new flood response plan for the Boundary Region to be completed in March 2019. The flood response plan will define what is being monitored, for example, snow levels, water levels and weather forecasts. When those indicators get to a level of concern, two things will happen. The regional emergency program will respond to that risk level and they will communicate both the indicator level and response action to the community. Different cooperating agencies like the RCMP and Emergency Management BC will be informed. ...continued on page 7

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
Alzheimer’s Awareness Month is an opportunity to challenge the stigma experienced by people living with dementia. Throughout the month, thousands of Canadians will be standing up to share their stories to challenge negative attitudes and misconceptions. When we reduce stigma, people living with dementia can live better. Here are some tips to help you cope with and overcome stigma: Be Open And Honest: When someone asks how you are doing, be honest with your answer. People may not realize how difficult things are for you. Talk About Dementia: Become informed. Sharing accurate information is the best way to reduce stigma. Help Others Understand: Encourage people to learn more about the disease. The Alzheimer Society of BC offers free tele-workshops for people to learn about dementia at home: www.alzbc.org/learn-from-home Talk To Someone You Trust: It can be hard dealing with dementia alone. Sharing this part of your life with family and friends and letting them know when you need help and support can be of great comfort. Stay Connected: It is important to engage with others who understand what you are going through. A support group can be a safe place to share your struggles with people who understand. The Alzheimer Society of BC offers Family Caregiver and Early Stage support groups: www.alzbc.org/support-groups If you are living with dementia or have questions about the disease, please call the First Link® Dementia Helpline at 1-800-936-6033 or contact your local Alzheimer resource centre.

...continued from page 5 Response to indicators could be to install temporary flood protection works. This could be sandbag berms or water bladders like those that were used in downtown Grand Forks in 2018. These may not be put in the same places. Key pieces of infrastructure like bridges and major roads will be protected from potential flooding. This plan does not take the place of a personal preparedness plan or actions to protect your own property. Local government staff are trained for their role in responding to any flood. This includes running the emergency operations centre, coordinating with other agencies, communicating to the community and installing temporary flood protection works. Boundary Flood Recovery

Dawn Louise BRENNAN It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dawn Brennan (nee Kyler), after a 2 year battle with cancer. Beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister and aunt. Dawn’s compassionate nature, sense of humour, and bright laughter could always light up a room. Dawn was born on Saltspring Island, where she graduated in 1970. After some travel in the USA, she moved with the family to Kaslo in 1975 and stayed until 1981. From here she made her way to Edmonton where she met her husband John Brennan; in 1993 they moved to Enderby in the North Okanagan.

Education/Classes
Reptiles, grizzlies and more to benefit There are many ways to support a healthy and diverse environment, from restoring habitat to educating schoolchildren about ecosystems. Columbia Basin organizations will be taking on 29 projects like these with support from over $1 million in Environment Grants from Columbia Basin Trust. “Our Environment Grants provide the flexibility to support a wide range of projects focused on ecosystem health, climate change, water stewardship and environmental education,” said Tim Hicks, Columbia Basin Trust Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits. “We’re honoured to be supporting these varied activities that are helping to strengthen environmental well-being in the Basin and recognize they couldn’t be accomplished without the hard work that groups and organizations put into developing and realizing them.” At Box Lake, near Nakusp, the Okanagan Nation Alliance will add basking sites for blue-listed painted western turtles, which need to bask in the sun to regulate their body temperatures and properly digest their food. Floating basking logs will be anchored in the water, away from motor boats, predators, humans and other disturbances. “Western painted turtle is an important part of Syilx culture,” said Lisa Wilson, Natural Resources Manager. “Syilx people have a sacred responsibility to care for the land and all living things. The number of western painted turtle is low in Syilx territory and it is hoped this project will be a step toward helping it maintain its place on the land.” Another recipient is the Silver City Trap Club near Trail. Its location is home to reptiles like rubber boas. The club is going create reptile habitat by replanting the area, adding large rocks and woody debris and constructing rocky shelters, known as hibernaculum, where the reptiles can take refuge over the winter. “Our hope is to rebuild and enhance the habitat while also making an opportunity for long-term data collection and an opportunity for public interaction with reptiles,” said project coordinator William Chapman. “Due to the nature of the club, activity on the property will always be limited, so the club serves as a low-impact sanctuary in an otherwise busy corridor of human activity.” The Rocky Mountain Trench Society in the East Kootenay will be implementing three projects to enhance and maintain habitat for animals like Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, elk, deer, the blue listed Lewis woodpecker and American badger.

These will take place in the southeast Basin on Hatchery Ridge, North Waldo and Sheep Mountain. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. “Grassland and open forest are major contributors to our region’s exceptional biodiversity,” said Marc Trudeau, Society Coordinator. “At Hatchery Ridge, sheep movement has become difficult due to thick timber that has not been able to thin itself naturally through wildfire. Slashing winter travel corridors will improve line of sight for predator avoidance and increase habitat connectivity, leading to safer travel over a larger area of winter range.” To help both grizzly bear populations and local food producers, Sanders Environmental Services will educate farmers and residents on grizzly bear safety and how to reduce conflicts. It will cost share the installation of electric fencing to protect livestock and crops from bears and provide workshops on effective electric fencing designs and what to do if you encounter a grizzly bear. Project coordinator Gillian Sanders said, “There is a real, tangible social cost to living with bears and the idea behind this project is to create a win-win by sharing this cost with farmers. The project will help people prevent bear conflicts, which can be stressful and expensive, while keeping the bears out of trouble.” See the complete list of approved projects at www.ourtrust.org/ reptiles-grizzlies-and-more-to-benefit-from-1-million/ Submitted by Columbia Basin Trust

Scholarships a boon for Selkirk College Grads Two dozen students who embarked on their post-secondary journey at Selkirk College and are continuing towards completion of a degree have received $120,000 from the Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society. A total of 24 Selkirk College alumni were awarded a $5,000 Ike Barber Transfer Scholarship that is available to undergraduate students who have completed at least one year at a public post-secondary in BC and transfer to another institution to complete their studies. “This scholarship opportunity is a great example of how beneficial starting post-secondary at Selkirk College is for both local students and those who come from communities further away,” says Teresa Dolan, Selkirk College’s Financial Aid Officer. “The 24 students who received the Ike Barber Transfer Scholarship this year have been able to get the right start through small class sizes and affordable tuition. Now they embark on the next stage where they can complete their degrees knowing that the financial pressure has been lightened.” In 2018, the Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society provided a total of $855,000 in transfer awards to 171 students across the province. The large majority of this year’s Selkirk College recipients graduated from high schools in the West Kootenay and Boundary region. They come a variety of Selkirk College programs and are now enrolled in university programs from across the province. “Through the scholarships and bursaries
that are available within Selkirk College, students have a chance to significantly cut down on the costs of a postsecondary education,” says Dolan. “Once they move on to further studies, they are able to take advantage of external scholarships like the Ike Barber to help get them to that next level.” The 2018 Ike Barker Transfer Scholarship recipients from Selkirk College include: Natasha Olsoff (UNBC), Molly Benbow (UBC), Shari Starling (UVic), Sophie Taburiaux (UVic), Svetlana Hadikin (UBC), Wren Shaman (UVic), Emmi Matern (UBC), Spencer Legebokoff (UVic), Philip Chwachka (UVic), Allison Best (UVic), Hailey Poznikoff (SFU), Reyna Brown (UVic), Savannah Hanning-Brown (UVic), Tiyena Laurin-Krause (UVic), Carmen Berger (UVic), Julie Archibald (UVic), Christie Baker (VIU), Jessica Munn (UVic), Jaala Derochie (UVic), Laura McNab-Cooms (UNBC), Megan MacKay (UVic), Nicole Laface (UVic) and Christopher Black (BCIT). The society is named after entrepreneur and philanthropist Irving K. Barber who had a long history of supporting public post-secondary in BC before his death in 2012. To qualify for a transfer scholarship, students must demonstrate strong academic achievement and significant volunteer service to their school or community. Applications for the 2019 Ike Barber Transfer Scholarship is now open and will be accepted until February 28, 2019. To find out more about the society’s programs call 1-844-478-4645 or visit www.ikbbc.ca To find out more about how to make a Selkirk College education more affordable, head to www.selkirk.ca/financial-aid Submitted by Bob Hall
