Kaslo: Base Camp For Your Adventure “What town IS this?”
When the waiter at the Treehouse heard this question, he almost dropped his tray of drinks. People just don’t arrive in Kaslo by accident. This village, set on the shores of a vast lake and surrounded by mountain ranges, is not on the way to any major centre. Nelson (population around 10,000) is an hour’s drive away and it takes nearly all day to drive to Vancouver or Calgary. Far from being a negative, Kaslo’s isolation from the box stores, chain coffeeshops and traffic of the city contributes to what makes it work. The village of less than 1,000 souls, with its tree lined residential streets and shop and restaurantlined main street is the quintessential small town. People rely on each other here and support their merchants and other local services. It’s no mystery why the settlement sprang up almost overnight back in the roaring nineties. The Kootenay Lake and Kaslo River valleys were swarming with prospectors in those days of the western silver and gold rushes. Picture the BlueBelle Bistro on Front Street as it was then – the Silver Dollar Saloon – which was only one of 27 saloons in the new boom town of Kaslo. But those days of frantic mineral exploration are long gone. Why do people stay here now? What is there to do? Look across the brilliant clear water of Kootenay Lake at the mountains opposite. The Purcells appear unmarked by roads and man-made structures. The forested slopes beckon hikers and backcountry skiers, and provide inspiration for musicians and artists. The most dramatic peak, snow topped for all but a few weeks every year, is the mountain named after the Norse god Loki, a legendary trickster and a shape shifter. If you’re there when the sun goes down,
the peak of Mount Loki (at 2771 metres) is the last one to glow with the rays of the dying sun. Climbing Mt Loki is a rite of passage for many Kaslovians. If you’re someone who enjoys driving, getting here – especially in a sports car or on a bike – is an adventure. The curvy blacktop, the sudden vistas of glaciers or lake demand your attention and your skills. Later, if you find yourself waiting in your car for a line of ducks to cross Kaslo’s main street, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the pace of life here is slow. But residents of the north Kootenay Lake region do get busy. Over 60 organizations and societies, ranging from the Trailblazers to the Lifewriters to hockey and curling clubs, have an active membership. A lot of cultural adventuring is going on as well. You can enjoy live music virtually any week of the year – hi-brow, low-brow…from open mic night at the Kaslo Hotel to a concert by a world renowned soprano or cellist at St. Andrew’s. The number of festivals is astonishing, considering the population. Backcountry hiking and biking is huge and the lake provides scope for all kinds of adventures and good fishing too. Come and visit, and make Kaslo the base camp for your own adventures!

National Pride!
Photo: Karma Halleran
There are 94 National Historic Sites in the vast province of British Columbia and only five in all of the West Kootenay. Kaslovians are very proud of the fact that there are two National Historic Sites in their town – the Village Hall on 4th Street and the SS Moyie, the oldest intact passenger sternwheeler in the world. For a great many years, sternwheelers provided a transportation lifeline to the many isolated communities on Kootenay Lake. The SS Moyie and her sister ships literally opened the Kootenay region to miners, businesses, farmers and pioneer families. When she was launched on October 22, 1898, there were no roads, no trains, and only foot, horse or mule travel into these hidden mountain valleys. The ships were the only means of mass transportation, freight and mail service. And so they came – the rich, the poor, prospectors and settlers – sailing up the pristine waterways on ships that were themselves works of art. The sternwheelers were the bearers of our destiny. It is the oldest municipal hall still standing in mainland BC. While the interior undergoes major restoration, the present village mayor and staff occupy offices half a block away at the Kemball Memorial Centre, a foursquare building of brick and local marble that was built in 1912.

“I mind the time...” L to R; Moyie at wharf; Prospector and horse with snowshoes; Window at Kootenay Star museum; restored Langham Hotel building.
Kaslo was founded in 1893 and was the region’s first incorporated city. It soon became known as the commercial centre of the gold, silver and lead mining industries. Its peaceful cove, one of only a few such natural harbours along the 145 kilometre long lake, bustled with activity. Ore barges, rowboats, private launches and steamships all jostled for a place alongside the busy wharf. In 1889 and 1890 G.O. Buchanan and brothers George and David Kane came to Kaslo to stake timber claims. When silver mining activity was reported in the area, the Kane brothers subdivided their lease into town lots. Back then the nascent community, which was more like a muddy space carved out of the forest, was known as Kane’s Landing. There seems to be several stories relating to the naming of Kaslo. When asked, D.P. Kane, the postmaster in 1905, asserted “Kaslo was named by my brother and myself in the year 1890. Previous to this time my brother and myself staked a pre-emption and a purchase comprising a mile square or 640 acres more or less at the mouth of the river that flows into Kootenay Lake at this point. The river was then and had been for many years before named Kaslo, so we named the town after the river.” David Kane also would tell a story about how the river got its name.“For a time when I was alone
here I had an old Frenchman trapper staying with me in the cabin for awhile. He told me that years before, when the Hudson Bay Company came in on this lake to get lead from the Bluebell Mine for bullets, that there was a Frenchman with their party by the name of John Kaslo or Kasleau. He had came up the lake to the head looking for placer gold and had named the river after his name.” The population soon grew to 3,000 people, most of them intent on seeking their fortunes seeking gold and silver. At one point in the 1890s, the town boasted 27 saloons. In only a few short years, newcomers transformed the rough settlement on the delta. The stumps of the huge fir, cedar and cottonwoods were pulled and burned; the streets were laid out grid-fashion in lower town and the first proper houses with glass windows and porches were built. Many of these original houses came as a kit; a settler would order an entire house package from the catalogue and have it shipped to Kaslo by sternwheeler. Disaster struck in 1894 as fire, flood and gale force winds came in succession. In February, half of the town’s commercial district was destroyed, as well as 60-70

houses, two hotels, the jail and several other two storey buildings. By 1895 and ’96, Kaslo had turned her fortunes around with the completion of the K&S Railway, a public telephone system, and electric and waterworks plants. By 1897 Kaslo had all the services of a progressive mining supply centre: a cigar factory, brewery, dry goods stores, saloons, hotels and brothels, and its own newspaper – The Kootenaian. Over the next 50 years, metal prices fell, mining costs rose and many of the mining industry workers and their families were obliged to move. By the end of the thirties a number of buildings were abandoned. A few years later, during the second world war, these derelict buildings became more or less inadequate housing for the Japanese Canadians who were interned here as a result of a federal government decree under the War Measures Act. For a while fruit-ranching was a thriving industry and forestry became the mainstay of the economy in the last quarter of the 20th century. Eventually a homegrown economy was created that was varied enough to withstand the changes of time. Lifestyle, tourism, forestry, and a surprising variety of small and home based businesses are now the foundation of Kaslo’s prosperity.

The Langham The construction of the Langham Hotel began in 1896 when it seemed that the frenetic pace of the area’s economy could only increase. The bar ran the entire length of the building and served drinks 24 hours a day. Beer was brewed onsite and beds were rented in three shifts a day. As the years passed, the hotel’s fortunes mirrored those of the itinerant labourers, would-be settlers and visionaries. For a time the building housed a bank – later it served as a rooming house. During WWII the Langham was converted into internment housing for approximately 80 families of Canadian-Japanese descent. After the war, longtime Kaslo resident Tomio Baba built Japanese-style fishing boats inside the building that were destined for the Pacific coast. In the early seventies, the building was on the verge of demolition. An energetic local group, organized by Michael Guthrie, saw its potential for a cultural centre and purchased the building, hoping to restore it to its former glory. The Langham Cultural Society was formed in 1974. Now it houses galleries, studios, a theatre, and the Japanese Canadian Museum. During the year, the public can view exhibitions in the galleries, attend plays, concerts and films, and participate in workshops and classes.
The SS Moyie
The interior of the SS Moyie has been meticulously restored to the luxurious Victorian era glory. It is a favourite venue for weddings and other events – like Kaslo’s graduating class photo shoot above. This grand sternwheeler, who has seen so much and has served for so many years on Kootenay Lake, is the last of her kind. As the rail and roadways improved, the fleet of sternwheelers that once brought settlers to their raw homesteads and hauled everything from industrial equipment to entire houses to revellers rollicking home after May Days, were decommissioned one after the other. It has been almost 60 years since the SS Moyie made her last sailing on Kootenay Lake. When she was finally dry docked in 1957 the Village of Kaslo purchased the Moyie from the CPR for the grand sum of $1. Breathing life into her history has involved thousands of hours of labour, research and the skills of a generation of workers. Storyboards at street level describe the scope and scale of the renovations that are still ongoing today. Spend a morning strolling the grounds and the interior of the ship and see elegant Victorian decor, historic artifacts, and realistic displays. Now a designated National Historic Site and BC Landmark, the sternwheeler is open daily for guided or self-guided tours from Mother’s Day through to Thanksgiving weekend. The Moyie is located at 324 Front Street. For more information see
www.klhs.bc.ca or phone/fax 250-353-2525.
The Kootenay Star Museum - A Working History The museum’s self-guided tour features a series of photographs and writings on the walls and stairways. There are sound stations where one can hear the authentic voices of internees. On the third floor there is a re-creation of the living quarters of a family of Nisei (Canadian citizens of Japanese descent); a snapshot of what it must have been like to live in internal exile in one’s own country. Langham Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 1 – 4 pm. The Japanese Canadian museum is open weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm every day.

Kaslo’s turbulent history and its absolute determination to survive is embedded in the mining and forestry artifacts on display at the Kootenay Star Museum. The turn of the last century was a time of dangers, hardships, toil and rewards – an era when fortunes were made and squandered in a day. After your visit, enjoy the warm atmosphere at Teresa’s, a unique coffee shop attached to the museum, which serves homemade delectables, exceptional soup and sandwiches, espresso coffees and ice cream. In the bush, in the Valley of the Ghosts, hikers can still find remnants of the prospectors’ storied mine sites, abandoned rail lines, rawhide trails and aerial tramways.

Events The May Days Craze - since 1892! Get out your baseball jerseys and come on down to Vimy Park for one of the best party weekends of the year – Kaslo May Days. Every spring during Victoria Day long weekend, May Days takes over the town – it’s a Kaslovian tradition! Come and celebrate with the locals for the rocking fun festival they have kept alive since 1892. In the old days, sternwheelers would run excursion trips from Nelson and would stop to pick up revellers at every point along the way. Others arrived in every type of boat and vehicle, filling the streets of Kaslo with miners, prospectors and their families. Back then, one of the main events of May Days was a horse race down Front Street with prizes as high as $250. The other highlighted event was the Prospector’s Race, where prospectors would line up on the street with all their camping equipment. During the race, they had to pitch their tents, light a campfire, set up their cooking equipment, mix bannock and cook it. What’s more riveting than a Prospector’s Race? Logger Sports is an axe-swinging, ruthless competition for prizes and glory. The Slo-Pitch tournament brings stiff competition from miles around with the current grad class and local softball teams stepping up to the plate all weekend, rain or shine.
The Riding Club Horse Show gives cowboys and cowgirls a chance to Photo: Julie Wilson show their stuff. On Sunday, check out the annual Show ‘n’ Shine and enjoy live music all weekend in the park. There are also lots of fun challenges for kids to enjoy like the wheelbarrow, three-legged, and egg-in-spoon races. After a fun-filled weekend celebrants can get in on the pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall on Monday morning. They can also check out the Garden Festival on Front Street. Just before noon the sidewalks fill with people, the marching band and bagpipers can be heard tuning up and the excitement builds in anticipation of the May Days parade. After it ends, everyone heads down to Vimy Park to watch children perform the May Pole Dance. A tradition that celebrates the arrival of spring, children have danced around the May Pole since 1923. Rain or shine, May Days brings a weekend with activities for everyone to take part in and kick off the spring season. You won’t want to miss it, so plan to be here May long weekend, May 21 - 23. It’s a guaranteed good time!
Kaslo Logger Sports - Canadian Championship Events! Now this is a show you don’t want to miss. Every Victoria Day long weekend lumber Jacks and Jills come to Kaslo from all over North America and even further. These athletes, whose skills are linked more closely to Canada as the land of legendary timber than any other sport, put on a show that always wows the crowds. Their strength, endurance and true grit is impressive to see. The sport has a rich and colourful history originating in the logging camps in this country in the late 1800s. Today, there are logger sports competitions across North America, northern Europe and even Australia and New Zealand. Kaslo’s early spring event is the kick-off show for the Canadian western circuit. The individual events are fast-paced and range from tree climbing an 80 foot spar pole to chopping through a 12 inch standing chop block to precariously balancing on a springboard 10 feet in the air! Don’t forget the log burling which invariably ends with competitors splashing into the freezing cold water of the burling pond. The venue is the shore of beautiful Kootenay Lake with its backdrop of the Purcell Mountain Range. Every year spectators are thrilled by the Canadian Championship events such as log rolling, axe throwing and choker racing.

To Market, To Market … Farmers’ markets are sprouting everywhere in the Kootenay region and Kaslo is no exception. 2016 marks the 15th anniversary of the Kaslo Saturday Market. What started out as mainly an artisans market has become a weekly venue for a variety of products grown or made in and around Kaslo. The market is open every Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm, June 11 until September 24. A “performers corner” features a different local musician every week during the market season. North “up the lake” (that’s a Kaslo expression) there is another market that takes place in the summer on Sundays, the Lardeau Valley Sunday Market, also open from 10 am to 2 pm. Expect organic local produce, Croissant Moon’s famous chocolate and savoury croissants, lots of hooping and music and a good time. Wednesdays, the place to do lunch is the Soup Kitchen at the Argenta hall. Have a bowl of soup and hang out with the people who live in this unique part of the world, all the while enjoying some toe-tapping music!

“What does it mean to be a man? Or to be a strong woman in a world where men grapple with the definition of manliness? These are just some of the questions that only The Greatest Hockey Tournament On Earth tackles.” -Kaslo Jamboree Photo: Louis Bockner
For seven years now, the infamous, nay notorious K-Jam has fogged the air in the Kaslo Arena. It’s old home week for all of the graduates of Kaslo’s storied Minor Hockey Association but anybody can play as long as they have a connection to Kaslo. In 2015 84 Kaslovian hockey players had fun, got famous for 15 minutes and a lucky few got to hoist the coveted Colander Cup. Bragging rights until next year when K-Jam 2016 rolls around once again in late December.

Kootenay SufferFest If you take your suffering seriously, like an art form, then this is the festival for you! Trails for extreme biking and cross-country running are laid out through the rugged Selkirk mountains. Conditions vary widely and the contestants must be prepared for all the rigours of the route, including being on the lookout for wildlife. Kootenay SufferFest is a three day event that attracts competitors from all over the country and some from the United States. The events are based in three West Kootenay towns: Kaslo, New Denver and Nakusp. On Saturday, September 3, Kaslo will be the finishing point of the Milford Mountain Marathon. This is a high alpine route that begins at Rossiter near the headwaters of the Kaslo River. Competitors run, hike and scramble for 50 km along the top of the ridges above the Valley of the Ghosts between New Denver and Kaslo. SufferFest originator Janis Neufeld describes it as “A thrilling race and a ‘must-do’ for all adventure seekers and mountain lovers!” There are shorter races – 25 km, 10 km and 5 km – taking place on the Saturday that begin and end in the village, plus there are races just for the kids starting at 12:30 pm at the logger sports grounds. Go down to Vimy Park and cheer on the young runners and cyclists! The entry fee for kids under 14 years old is just $10. If you’re up early on Sunday morning in Kaslo on SufferFest weekend you can watch the mountain bikers start off for the signature alpine race event, the 100 km Galena Ghost Ride. A Summer of Music In July, Kaslo’s annual choral workshop “How Can I Keep From Singing”, offers musicians the luxury of devoting almost a week to singing, and the chance to learn from such luminaries as Eva Bostrand, Tamara Sunsung and Kaslo’s own Karen Behn. Become immersed in the joy of singing by attending the workshops or the wrap-up concert on July 23. In August, Kaslo is host to dozens of classical guitarists of all ages. They attend master classes and workshops and enjoy the opportunity to meet other musicians, to learn from renowned instructors and to become immersed in their craft along with like minded people. The public gets to be a part of this inspiring musical focus at a number of concerts showcasing individual musicians and guitar ensembles. Winter In The Forest
Harvest Fairs
Some unusual events in this outdoor festival include human dogsled races for charity, Swede sawing competition and the water boil race. Enjoy the sweet stickiness of maple taffy, a steaming cup of homemade soup or baked beans, hot dogs and cocoa and hot cider. Or make your own bannock on a stick over the bonfire. Local musicians and storytellers will entertain you. The festival takes place on BC Family Day at the Kaslo airstrip which is just below all the True Blue trails so bring your skis or snowshoes if you have them. If you don’t, no worries , you can try out the skis provided for free by Kaslo’s Outdoor Recreation Society. The Kaslo & District Community Forest Society is proud to sponsor this fantastic free family event.
There are two fairs held every year in September at the head of the lake in Meadow Creek and at Argenta. The Lardeau Valley Harvest festival takes place the last weekend in September in Meadow Creek and the Argenta Fall Faire a weekend or two earlier in Argenta. Expect traditional fall fair staples such as competitions and prizes for the biggest pumpkin, best preserves, pies and most fabulous scarecrow. Antique equipment and horse plowing demos and cider pressing (bring your apples) are also a feature. At the Argenta Fall Faire expect lots of music and old tyme square dancing. The highlight of the fair is a little bit of a homage to the Burning Man festival. Everybody gathers round and watches as an elaborate structure made of sticks is lit on fire just before nightfall.

Jazz it Up The sun is shining! Toes are tapping! The crowd is stoked! Where else can you look up from your seat to watch an eagle catching the wind against a mountain backdrop? Where else can you cool off in a nearby lake after a little breakdance on the grass?
The venue’s unique location provides festival patrons with a natural amphitheatre to enjoy while watching the performances on the floating stage. The 25th Jazzfest happens this year July 29-31. This is a world class family friendly festival. The festival was named one of the “10 great places to get in tune, be outdoors!” by USA Today. It has been host to some big names in the entertainment business as well as exciting emerging talents. During the daytime there is no charge to come and enjoy the music and the scene. Ticketed events for the big name acts are reserved for the evenings. Jazz may be in the festival’s name but it doesn’t end there. The Etc. part showcases the many acts who play numerous genres – blues, funk, soul, world, and Latin stylings – and several who defy or blur any stylistic boundaries you could name. Great music and an intimate, beautiful beach setting on Kootenay Lake is the Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival appeal. Food and craft vendors are on site at the park. You are welcome to bring your own picnic but no glass bottles will be allowed. For the schedule, ticket prices and information about the performers, check out

THE ORIGIN OF EGGS BENEDICT In 1894, Lemuel Benedict, a Wall Street stockbroker, stumbled into the Waldorf Hotel hoping to find a cure for his hangover. He ordered “buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon, and a hooker of Hollander.” The maitre d’hotel at the Waldorf decided the dish was delicious, and added it to his menu, replacing the bacon with ham and the toast with an English muffin.

The Kaslo Area
has many outstanding hiking and biking trails. Drop by the Chamber office on 4th Street or the Visitor Centre at the SS Moyie on Front Street for detailed information and trail maps.

ridge with a beautiful view over Kaslo. It is steep with switchbacks, elevation gain is approximately 100 metres. The trail head is located on Wardner Street in Kaslo. After the viewpoint you can continue up and head west on the Connector, which will take you to the Buchanan Fire Access trail, an additional 250 metre climb upwards.
Kaslo River Trail. The Kaslo Trailblazers Society has de-
veloped a network of trails along the north and south sides of the Kaslo River. There are now two beet-red covered bridges, so you can do a very nice walking loop in under an hour. The wide walkway to the first covered bridge on the north side river trail is flat or only very gently sloped. There are now stairs to help you navigate the one part of the trail that was washed out in a heavy spring freshet. After you cross the bridge, on the south side of the river there is a skein of five short trails that loop back towards the south riverside trail. You can head back towards Kaslo and a second covered bridge that’s right in town at 5th Street and Railway or continue along the riverside or turn up to the Kaslo airstrip and the True Blue Recreation Area trails.
The Kaslo Mountain Bike Skills Park is the first
phase of the Kaslo Mountain Bike Initiative. It is located on the north side Kaslo River trail and will use the features of this riverine terrain to create a network of single track trails that will be interesting, fun, and challenging enough for building skills and fitness. Proper signage will direct riders onto the new bike trails and will indicate trail difficulty.
The Valley of the Ghosts. Hike the many trails in the Kaslo River Valley and follow in the footsteps of the mining pioneers. The main route is the Wagon Road, which begins at the top of Zwicky Road in Kaslo and continues all the way west to Bear Lake. The majority of this trail is wide and has gradual incremental elevation gains. This historic former highway and old K&S Railway bed can be accessed from a variety of places along Hwy 31A (that follows the Kaslo River west from Kaslo to New Denver ) at 3 km, 5 km and 10 km west of Kaslo. The Wagon Road is a wonderful trail to run, walk, moun-
tain bike, snowshoe or cross country ski along, and is designated as a multi-use trail – ATV and snowmobile enthusiasts can also use the trail. The Kaslo to Sandon Rails to Trails Society manages the Wagon Road trail and where it passes through the Buchanan Recreation Area just across the highway from Southfork, it is groomed for cross country skiing by the Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society.

Mount Buchanan Lookout. From Kaslo, head west
towards New Denver on Highway 31A for 10 km to the Blue Ridge Forest Service Road, then follow the signs. Follow the main road for 11.9 km to the lookout, staying right at the 7.0 km junction. This road can be driven in a high-clearance 2wd vehicle if the conditions are dry – but you’re always better off with 4wd sport utility or pickup. The Buchanan Lookout features a refurbished forest fire watch tower. This is a great spot for family oriented outings; views are spectacular and flowers are lovely in season. A 2 km loop trail below the lookout provides access to viewpoints.
Galena Trail. People love this trail! Since it follows an old
railway bed, the elevation only changes gradually, and often it’s wide enough to walk or cycle two abreast. But the best part? You get to pull yourself over Carpenter Creek on a cable car – quite a rush when the river runs wild in June. From Kaslo, on Hwy 31A, past Fish and Bear lakes to Sandon Rd then turn left. The parking lot and trailhead will be on your right.
Whitewater Canyon Trail. This is a great hike that
takes you through alpine bowls and offers spectacular viewpoints, even fascinating remnants of the valley’s mining past. It’s also pretty easy walking. Start with the Whitewater Forest Service Road. It begins from Hwy 31A just after the abandoned mine buildings and before the sign for Retallack. Walk as far as you like and then return. Most people opt for a 3 to 5 hour excursion.

alpine park from Woodbury. After you’ve parked your high clearance vehicle, you will gain almost 1,000 metres as you hike and scramble the 4-6 hour hike to either of the two cabins. Get more info on this route into the park at Woodbury Resort. You can reserve the cabins through www.alpineclubofcanada.ca The other way to access the high alpine in this provincial park is to take Hwy 31A west of Kaslo 4 km to Southfork. Cross the bridge you see on your left and keep going up and up the Keen Creek Mainline. It’s just over 14 km to the boundary of the park. From there you are in for some true wilderness hiking as the trails in that section of Kokanee Glacier Park have not been maintained.

Hiking at the Head of the Lake Fry Creek Canyon Trail. Access to the Fry Creek Canyon is via Johnsons Landing. Just keep following the main road until you come to the trailhead signs. The trail to the canyon crosses private property; the owners have courteously granted permission for the public to cross their land to continue on the trail. The Fry Creek Trail extends some 12 km up the canyon and takes you to the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy. The trail winds through stands of cedar, hemlock and Ponderosa pines above Kootenay Lake. You will stop often and turn around to admire the splendid views of the creek, the canyon and surrounding peaks. Once you arrive at the canyon, head to the right and go down the trail to the bridge across the creek. This trail heads down to Kootenay Lake, thus making this trip accessible by boat if you choose. The hike to the bridge is a good initiation to the canyon. For the more adventurous, the Fry Creek
Canyon Trail only begins once you reach the canyon, just above the bridge. You need only hike a kilometre or two up the trail to experience the canyon. The trail stays to the north side of the creek and was blasted out of the canyon wall by prospectors hoping to strike gold. Often times you feel suspended over the rushing creek. It is a long five kilometres from the trail head to the substantial cable car across the creek just above the confluence of Fry Creek and Carney Creek. Give yourselves plenty of time to get there as there is a tricky rock slide to scramble over on the way. Crossing using the cable car is also a bit of work as it is quite heavy. Once across the cable car, the trail fades quickly and the wilderness closes in. This trail is a great introduction for hikers to the ruggedness of the Kaslo area. For more information, visit

Kootenay Lake
‘Golf is a good walk spoiled’
Kootenay Lake, sometimes serene, sometimes furious, is a great inland lake that stretches 145 kilometres from north to south, with a westward pointing arm. There are many beaches, some accessible by car, and still more by boat or a good day’s hike. Still relatively unused by power boaters, the lake offers unmatched solitude for paddling along its ancient rocky shores, where the only sound you’ll hear is nature and the swoosh of your paddle. Mergansers, loons, blue herons and many other species of waterfowl watch your passing as you skim along in the shadow of the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges. As the calm serenity of the lake often gives way to some unpredictable winds in the early afternoons, crossing the lake by kayak or canoe should be taken with care or by guided tour for those less experienced or new to the area. For those with more time, bring your camping gear or choose a multiday adventure tour from the local kayak outfitter, and paddle across the lake to a choice of pristine and remote campsites, where a short hike inland can reveal a triple waterfall, old growth forest or a prehistoric inland lake. Guided sea kayaking tours, lessons and equipment rentals including stand-up paddle (SUP) boards are available at Kaslo Kayaking: Call
Whether or not you agree with the words of Mark Twain, it’s hard to keep your focus on the ball at the Kaslo Golf Club. There is a spectacular view at each of the nine holes, no matter which way you turn. The course has rolling hills, expertly conditioned grass greens and well-manicured fairways. Sand in the bunkers is carefully maintained. There is a picturesque water hazard adjacent to the 9th green that has a waterfall and an accurate scale model of the SS Moyie. The club also has a driving net and a practice green. Established in 1923 when Kaslo locals got together to create a 4 hole course, the Kaslo Golf Club and golf course is one of the oldest in BC. The clubhouse features a fully licensed restaurant with a varied menu, specials and take-out. Dine inside or on the covered patio where you can relax and enjoy the view. Wildlife sightings on the course are not unusual, so be sure to bring your camera. The clubhouse is open from April to October. At the Kaslo Golf Club you do not usually have to pre-book tee times – come when you want to play, register and start in order of arrival. There are rental clubs and pull and power carts and motorcyclists can get free club rentals. Whether you are an experienced golfer or a beginner, there are enough nuances of play to keep you coming back to enjoy the course. Fore!

Cross the intersection and you’re on the doorstep of the BlueBelle Bistro. Check what live music is on the menu! The Mountain King ‘burger & ice cream joint’ is right next to the 1896 building, which houses 1896 Silver & Books second hand bookstore and handcrafted silver jewellery – well worth a visit. Just around the corner on Fourth Street you will find a hair salon, ladies fitness centre and a print shop/artists hub. Cross the highway intersection to the Mohawk service station, which also houses Chez Serge takeout. Right behind it is a secondhand store in the old firehall. There are many treasures to be found, and proceeds go to the Victorian Hospital. Continue on Fourth Street towards City Hall, and pay a visit to Kaslo’s library. On the other side of the road, you will find Barren’s Sport Shop, catering to fishermen, motorcyclists, skateboarders and more. As you can see, you won’t go hungry when you are busy shopping in downtown Kaslo! Whether you crave pizza, a burger, sandwiches or a full meal, you can enjoy the meal in-house or get it to go. Good spots for a picnic are the 4th Street Kemball Centre gardens or pick a bench overlooking the lake. During the golfing season visit The Clubhouse Restaurant at the Golf Course (just up the hill) and enjoy their food and breathtaking view. Kaslo Building Supplies is a little further south and across the highway from Kaslo Pump-Esso. Kaslo’s downtown offices house two lawyers, two accountants and the high school’s learning centre. The provincial government agent, village staff and some forestry offices are all at the Kemball Memorial Centre. The health centre that includes a long term care facility and physicians’ clinic is just up the A Avenue hill, as is JV Humphries School, where Kindergarten through grade 12 classes are taught. Periwinkle Children’s Centre is in Vimy Park. The Village of Kaslo is a wonderful place to live or visit, a microcosm of a much bigger city. Come and enjoy.

As you walk up the lake side of Kaslo’s Front Street, starting at the Visitor Centre, you’ll come across the ‘Admiralty’, home of Kaslo Shipyards. Next door, in the ‘Farmer’s Institute’ building with the baubles on the top of its facade, is Kaslo Kayaking, your one stop adventure shop. This is where you can rent a kayak, book an adventure tour, and get lots of backcountry information. Still on Front Street is Kaslo Clothes Hanger men’s & ladies fashions, (very good prices!) and a fascinating private museum within Teresa’s Coffee Shop. Need your electronics looked at? The state-of-the-art computer store can help with that. Right beside it is Sunnyside Naturals, home of the Kootenay’s Soup Queen. Stop in for a taste. Continue up the street to browse in Figments, or do your laundry at the laundromat – while getting your hair done! Peruse area real estate in the window of Coldwell Banker’s then stop at Cornucopia to pick up some natural snacks or local fruit for your picnic. The Kaslo Hotel has luxury rooms, a pub and dining room and the pub patio is a great place to relax with friends in the summertime. Continuing on, you will find Kootera Pottery. In the pink heritage house with the white picket fence at the top of Front Street is the Rosewood Cafe. Cross the street, and start down the block…more intriguing stores. Hoofprint Graphics custom makes and sells funky and fab T-shirts. Right next door is the Credit Union with an ATM. Kaslo’s hardware store has the ambiance of an old-fashioned general dry goods store, but stocks everything modern that might be needed. If you are looking for something unique and beautiful for your home, Willow has a great selection. Next comes Eric’s Meat Market and Deli, a third generation family business. They offer a large variety of Canadian and imported cheeses, and the very best in meats. Stroll on and find another gift and souvenir shop, a branch of Selkirk College and an upstairs art gallery, two great restaurants – the Treehouse and Buddy’s Pizzeria – and the Morningstar Healing Arts Studio. A grocery store with bakery and deli, the insurance agency and our own full service Kaslo Community Pharmacy .

Kaslo’s Nordic Centre On the flanks of Mt Buchanan, just a few kilometres west of Kaslo towards New Denver, is a new four-season wilderness recreation area, locally known as “Bucky.” Many trails and logging roads, plus the K&S Wagon Road, criss-cross the area. The Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society grooms over ten kilometres of trail throughout Bucky for classic skiing. Since the elevation of the trails ranges from 3,000 to 5,000 feet, the snow is reliably good through March in most years. There’s a cozy warm-up cabin in the upper reaches, and basic facilities with a tiny woodstove for you to warm up and wind down at the lower range. In mid-April, the south facing slopes lose their mantle of snow and the mountain-bikers hit the trails: The Monster and Mr. Skinny are big attractions for the more extreme riders. More sedate riders and hikers love the Wagon Road. Access: Drive 6.5 kms towards New Denver along Hwy 31A, just prior to South Fork, the pullout is on the right. Ski/ snowshoe/sled the 1 km up to the staging area. The area will remain multi-use, with no fees charged. For more info:

True Blue Recreation Area is right in Kaslo’s backyard. The True Blue Recreation Area has many kilometres of marked skiing trails, woodland paths and gentle grades as well as some good climbs and swift flying slopes. The dogsleg at the Kaslo Golf Course is the main tobogganing hill for Kaslo youngsters.

It is believed that the first curling game in Kaslo was in 1893. That first club applied for affiliation with the Royal Caledonian Curling Club in 1895 and between then and 1906, Golden, Sandon, Nelson, Rossland, Greenwood, Trout Lake and Cranbrook joined the Kootenay Curling Association. The Kaslo Curling Club, at the Kaslo recreation complex on Arena Road, has a men’s, women’s and mixed league, as well as junior programs and a drop-in night. There is an active social club, and they welcome visitors and newcomers to the sport.

Skate the Lakes
Fish and Bear lakes, northwest of Kaslo on Highway 31A, usually freeze over in winter, making ice fishing possible and a day on the little lakes a popular excursion for many Kaslo families. If you get lucky, you’ll be cooking your catch over a bonfire on the shore. Winter usually brings at least one safe opportunity for outdoor skating on Mirror Lake. There is nothing like a heated game of shinny between all ages, or the indescribable serenity of just skating at dusk on a lake in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Kaslo Arena The Kaslo and District Arena draws people to its doors like a light shining bright draws moths. Every weekend the parking lot is filled with cars and trucks that bring budding hockey stars to its ice. Weekdays after work, adult club hockey brings competitive men and women in for a workout. Curling leagues hurry hard and bonspiels abound. This asset was built by community effort in 1975, with money, materials and labour that were all donated. The Complex includes an ice rink and two sheets of curling ice. Both parts of the facility have been and are operated by volunteer community groups or societies. Apart from the school gym, the curling rink and the ice rink are the main focal point of indoor winter recreation opportunities for Kaslo Village and area. The Arena Complex supports public skating, club hockey and organized youth minor hockey. In the city, members of the public, no matter what age, have to accept ice times that are either very early in the morning or late at night; not so here. Adult club hockey occurs shortly after work, we even have the up-the-lake hippy hockey group which plays every Sunday, immediately after public skating. There is always room for more participants in the various activities that happen at the rink. It is a prized amenity; it provides recreation, community and social activities, and pride. Kaslovians are always trying to make it better; it is one of the reasons many choose to live here.

Intuitive Counsel, Psychic Guidance and Spiritual Support ~
Whitney Laine ~
Dustin is a Rebalancing massage practitioner in the Morningstar Studio. Rebalancing massage is a combination of joint release, deep tissue and acupressure. Clients gain body awareness to create lasting effects far beyond the massage table. Whether you are looking for a way to relax your body or a deep healing experience, Dustin is here to help!
Whitney Laine is a manual therapy practitioner, training in a four year Classical Osteopathy program. A professional dancer for most of her life, she was involved in a life changing accident that left her without functional mobility, and altered the course of her career. Unsuccessful with many modalities and told by the medical system that she was out of options, her path to discovering the combined healing power of Osteopathy, Restorative Yoga and energy work began. This mind, body, spirit approach gently assists the body into a position for self-healing through alignment and integrative methods. Using the principles of traditional Osteopathy to unravel the layers of compensation and get to the root cause of symptoms also provides preventative care. Like an obstructed dam, increasing range of motion liberates nerves, arteries, veins, and lymphatics. When the parts of the body are where they belong, your tissues no longer pull on organs or bones. The healing process can then begin and the overall health improves. Restorative resting postures and gentle rehabilitative exercises are given as a support to the body in holding the changes made in treatment. Whitney uses this unique approach, designing programs that bring an inner awareness specific to each individuals experience.

Sonya Franke ~ Mindfulness Awareness Practices
Brendan Murray-Nellis R.Ac. is a Registered Acupuncturist with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of British Columbia (CTCMA). This will be his fourth year practising in Kaslo. His treatments can include acupuncture, western herbalism, cupping, moxibustion, Chinese massage and electrical stimulation. He treats many types of conditions including chronic pain, sciatica, headaches, menopausal symptoms, digestive disorders, chronic fatigue, as well as mental and emotional health. Most extended health plans cover his treatments and he bills direct for low-income MSP coverage. Brendan received his acupuncture diploma with honours at Pacific Rim College in Victoria, BC. He has also studied western herbalism through Pacific Rim College, Dominion Herbal College and has a BA from Bard College in New York. Brendan practices in Kaslo Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
I have been studying the practice of mindfulness for many years. As an educator for the past 25 years, I have recently been teaching mindfulness practices to children and young parents, as well as to adults. Practicing mindfulness is experiencing life in the present moment utilizing awareness and compassion that is already within us. The practices of mindfulness can help with changing our relationship to stress. Other potential benefits include improved attention, improved emotional regulation, increased compassion, increased overall energy and improved sleep patterns over time. We learn to regulate our body, maintaining enough alertness and readiness to deal with life stress while also achieving enough rejuvenating rest to stay vitally alive. Many people struggle to maintain this sense of balance and experience chronic overwhelm or lack the flexibility to adapt as needed. If you are interested in learning some simple yet very effective techniques to help you create the conditions for balance and health, contact me at

Susan Grimble ~ Feldenkreis Feldenkrais relieves pain and reduces stress, by bringing your awareness to how you move. Animals are born knowing how to move but humans learn by copying the (usually) bad habits of our parents. The classes & sessions teach slow, gentle movements allowing you to become aware of your patterns and change them. If movement is difficult for you or you want more grace Feldenkrais can help.
Mina Palmer ~ Advanced Thai Massage Practitioner I practice the beautiful art of Traditional Thai Massage at Morningstar Studio. Thai Massage is based on the concept of clearing blockages in the energy lines (meridians) referred to as “Sen” in the Thai tradition. It is a spiritually based practice, based on four primary desired outcomes: love, compassion, joy and equanimity. The therapeutic and relaxation treatments that I offer incorporate deep tissue massage, yoga, breath work and acupressure.

Geri Rinkel
A quote that resonates with Geri Rinkel is a reference to pottery as “emotionally durable.” Clay brings a primitive sense of familiarity and comfort to our senses. To surround ourselves with pottery, grounds us. Geri’s passion for clay is transposed into functional ware. Gentle alterations to her forms create an element of an organic nature. She likes when her work is held so one can feel the asymmetrical maker’s mark. Studio visits are welcomed. See ad pg 30.

Thirty years experience working with earthenware clay has allowed him to develop a distinctive style of glaze applications that complement the clean, functional forms he produces on the potters wheel. Karel looks forward to reopening the Kooterra gallery and studio to the public for the second year on May 5th. The gallery will have an expanded selection of pottery after the enthusiastic response from visitors during the 2015 season. See ad pg 30.

Wildlife Viewing in the Kaslo Area As the early morning light breaks through the cloud over the Purcell Mountains, wild creatures are on the move. An osprey windsurfs overhead; it quickly drops and pulls a little silver kokanee from Kootenay Lake. A bull elk, after taking his herd to the sparkling waters for a drink, scans the steep shoreline for coyotes and other annoyances to his herd, then leads them back to higher ground above the town. The north end of Kootenay Lake has a wide range of habitats. These include the vast mountain forests, warmer wetter valley bottom and intermittent forest wetlands, alpine meadows, riparian (river and lakeside) areas, even grasslands. Deer, elk and coyote are a common sight in all seasons and at most elevations. In the spring, summer and fall, grizzly and black bears roam the forests (and make occasional forays into human neighbourhoods.) You don’t have to travel very far from where you’re staying to catch sight of a grizzly feeding in an alpine meadow or fishing from a rock in a creek. Sightings of moose, bobcats and increasingly wolves are not uncommon – especially in the Meadow Creek area and west of Kaslo. Beavers and otters swim in Kootenay Lake and there are some dandy beaver dams and lodges to be seen enroute from Kaslo to New Denver. Also along that route, at Fish Lake and Bear Lake, waterfowl and other bird species reward the patient viewer. The rest stop just off the highway at Fish Lake is a perfect place to sit and observe. (And in early summer there are pollywogs burbling around in the shallows. Don’t forget – they’re wildlife too!)
Woodbury Resort & Marina Like most places in the Kootenays, Woodbury began as a mining camp, servicing the miners who worked in many of the local mines (the King Solomon, and nearby Grant and General Mines). It was also home for many of these men, who were lured by the promise of a fortune in silver, lead and zinc. Prospectors staked and then worked their claims all along the creek for kilometres up into the mountains. And as with other communities, the boom didn’t last, the mining declined and the prospectors eventually went elsewhere. Today, Woodbury’s fortune lies with its breathtaking location on Kootenay Lake and the great outdoors. Woodbury Resort and Marina is open most of the year. This four-season resort has everything from boat rentals with or without a guide to a restaurant that is famous for its fish and chips. The laid-back atmosphere at JB’s Pub lends itself to story telling, fishing talk, and outdoor adventure tales. There is live entertainment from time to time. The resort has a campground and

The Seeker If you’re a birder, you’re a seeker. You and your fellows are not afraid to go places others wouldn’t – the marshes, second growth forest as thick as the hairs on a dog’s back – even on a damp and cold winter Kootenay day.
The scientific observer of Nature is a kind of mystic seeker in the act of prayer. - Muhammad Iqbal Join the Annual Christmas Bird count for a fun and important activity. On this one day in 2015, 17 brave individuals spotted a total of 1423 birds. Not bad for a winter birder type of day. The count is open to all and is advertised in the local paper, Pennywise. Overall, bird watching is very popular here. The Creston Wildlife Area is just down the lake, and is a major flyway and protected area. So, you just never know what you will see right around the corner. Keep your binoculars handy, so as not to miss that one special bird that is not on your list yet.
RV park, a recreation hall with daily activities for visitors and access to over 50 km of trails for the hikers and ATVers. Fishing is excellent year round and at its best in fall and winter. Kootenay Lake is famous for having some of the biggest Gerrard rainbow trout, as well as Dolly Varden (bull trout) and kokanee. The resort sponsors a Dolly Tournament at Easter and a Rainbow Tournament at Thanksgiving, the second Monday in October. Woodbury is a gateway to Kokanee Glacier Park and the Silverspray cabin. In summer you would access the park by driving up Woodbury Creek forestry road for 13 kilometres to the trailhead. It is advisable to check with the Forest Service (250-825-1100) or the people in the know at Woodbury Resort regarding forestry road conditions. To get to this resort, travel south approximately 13.5 km from Kaslo. For specific information on the resort, see www. woodburyresort.com or call 1-877-353-7717.
Kaslo and Area Guide 2016 | Kaslo BC, Canada 33
Ainsworth Hot Springs is a 20 km drive south of Kaslo on Hwy 31. The village overlooks Kootenay Lake and the spectacular Purcell Mountains. Many early stories of the Kootenays mention the hot springs. Long ago the native Indians came up to Kootenay Lake in the late summers for the kokanee salmon run. This timing coincides with the ripening of huckleberries. It is easy to picture Kootenay Lake’s original people enjoying a soothing soak in the hot springs after spending their days fishing and scrambling around the hills picking berries. The hot mineral rich water flow originates in the system of caves above and to the east of the resort. As the water works its way down through fractures in the rock its temperature increases by 40 °C per kilometre until it hits a lakeshore fault – a rock layer at a 45 ° angle. Hydraulic pressure forces the water up along the fault until it emerges at the pool and caves of Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort. Several geologic factors mean that the water in the pools are refreshed six times each day.

Cody Cave Tours operate year round offering a variety of tour packages; Adventure, Explorer and Family. For children age 5 and up to adults who enjoy more strenuous and physical adventure. The caves are accessible to everyone.
MOUNTAIN BIKING: www.kaslochamber.com/visitors/ biking.php The Kaslo area has a vast variety of biking trails ranging from easy to very challenging. Trail lengths vary as do the types of terrain they cover and the elevations you will reach. Details of various trails, conditions you may expect to encounter along with a list of instructions for riding smart and having a good time are available on the Kaslo Chamber website. See page 19 for more information.
CYCLE, MOTORCYCLE KOOTENAY LOOP: www.selkirkloop.org The Kootenay Loop is the BC portion of the international Selkirk Loop. The ride takes you from Kaslo to New Denver, down the Slocan Valley to Nelson along the west arm of Kootenay Lake and back up to Kaslo. Most of the route follows rivers and the shores of lakes. The scenery is impressive and there are many opportunities to stop for a bite to eat or to stretch your legs with a stroll through the quaint communities you come to along the route.
KASLO KAYAKING: 250-353-1925, www.kaslokayaking.com Kaslo Kayaking, located in the heart of downtown Kaslo, offers tours, rentals and lessons. Full day and 1/2 days tours are available, with no experience required. Lessons, including all gear, are offered for kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and windsurfing. Rent a kayak, canoe or a stand up paddleboard and take advantage of the opportunity to paddle the shores of Kootenay Lake and visit some of the beaches.
KOKANEE MOUNTAIN ZIPLINE: www.zipkokanee.com The original zipline in the West Kootenay is situated on 44 acres of old growth Douglas fir and pine forests. Located 22 km north of Hwy 3A on Kokanee Glacier Park Rd., Kokanee Mountain Zipline offers 6 ziplines of varying heights and lengths providing a breathtaking view of the Kokanee Creek canyon. It’s best to book your tour ahead as walk-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis. Some weight restrictions. Fun for the whole family!
SNOWMOBILING: www.nelsonkootenaylake.com/see-anddo/recreation/snowmobiling You can snowmobile on both groomed and ungroomed trails from early November to mid-May. Although there are no groomed trails in the Kaslo area, logging and old mining roads can take you to the top of Mount Buchanan above Kaslo where you can bask in the sun above the clouds. Some areas have cabins with wood heat, and offer shelter and a warm place to stop for lunch.
EXPLORE KOOTENAY LAKE IN A HOUSEBOAT: 1-800-554-1657 www.kasloshipyard.com Houseboating is a wonderful way to explore Kootenay Lake and enjoy some of the best fishing in BC. While cruising the lake you can check out the secluded coves, sandy beaches, private swimming and amazing nature hikes as well as the lakeside towns for golf, natural hotsprings, shopping and dining. Since Kootenay Lake never freezes, you can rent one of the four vessels any time of year and go exploring!
HIKING MT. LOKI: Accessible on the east shore of Kootenay Lake, Mount Loki offers a great 10 km return day hike with spectacular panoramic views from the summit. The hike is not for the faint of heart and requires minimal exposed scrambling near the top. The trailhead is a 15 km drive on a gravel road north of Riondel up Portman Creek Road. Bring lots of food & water and dress appropriately. Hiking poles really help, especially for the descent.

A scenic drive north along Hwy 31 will bring you to the Lardeau Valley. There are several places to camp or to launch your canoe or boat along the way. Schroeder Creek is a small residential area with a resort that offers everything from gorgeous campsites to trailers for rent. Check out their offerings on www.schroedercreekresort.com There are two small lakeside provincial parks where you can camp or spend the day down at the beach. For more info about these and other Kootenay Lake parks, go to www.env. gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore Just before you come to Cooper Creek, if you turn right, you can visit the small communities of Argenta and Johnsons Landing, both at the northern end of Kootenay Lake but on the east shore. Argenta hosts a fall faire and on Wednesdays everyone is welcome to the Soup Kitchen get-togethers for soup, music making and good company. The northern head of the lake offers great opportunities for paddling and great skating in the winter. You access the trailhead for the Fry Creek Canyon Trail at Johnsons Landing. Stay north on Highway 31 and you will reach the farms at Meadow Creek, their deep soil formed from the deposits laid down by the Duncan and Lardeau Rivers. In the distance, the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges rise very suddenly to jagged peaks. The Meadow Creek Store and Drifters Restaurant are Meadow Creek’s downtown. Drifters often has live music on Friday nights and a friendly pub atmosphere. Their recently renovated lodgings offer a great base camp for remote adventures. Meadow Creek has an active community centre, an interesting historical museum, and a campground that has very reasonable rates. For the thrill seekers, Lardeau River Adventures offers exclusive one day rafting trips down the Lardeau River. They are proud to offer an expedition-style adventure that is accessible and affordable for the day-tripper. Watch for signs in Meadow Creek. Call 250-366-4338 for more information. Drive or cycle further north and you will come to Howser Station Road. At one time, Howser was a booming town, with promise of fortunes to be made in gold mining. Today there are only a few homes on acreages, a boat launch, great wild beaches and swimming in the clear and relatively warm (compared to Kootenay Lake) waters of Duncan Lake. To truly discover some of the more remote hiking opportunities north of Kootenay Lake, you will need a pickup or preferably a four wheel drive vehicle. It is a good idea to check with the local merchants about road conditions and whether there are active logging operations on the backcountry roads.
Duncan Dam In 1967 the Duncan Dam, a 40 metre earthfill dam with no power generation facilities, was the first of the three Columbia River Treaty dams to be built in the Canadian section of the Columbia River Basin. It was designed to control the flow of

water into Kootenay Lake from the Duncan River, which provides about 13% of Kootenay Lake’s inflow. As the dam neared completion, the valley bottom was cleared of large trees, the original residents of the community of Howser displaced, and farms and orchards were flooded. When the water began to rise and fill the new reservoir, Duncan Lake increased in size from 25 km to 45 km in length. You can visit the dam. Follow the signs on Highway 31 north of Meadow Creek – or do the armchair version!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoOTEZFrJGA The depth of Duncan Lake fluctuates by as much as 30 metres. When the water is low in winter and early spring, you can still see traces of the prior settlement and the ghostly stumps of the trees. Operations of the dam can change water levels, sometimes suddenly, downstream or at the north end of Kootenay lake. For reservoir information call 1-877-924-2444.
Seeing Red! In the late summer and early fall, kokanee (land-locked salmon) provide a spectacle of nature, raw and red in fin and gill, as they return to their native creeks. To see this phenomenon of nature, there are viewing stations at the Meadow Creek Spawning Channel. The 3.3 km loop was built in 1967, with BC Hydro funds, to compensate for upstream habitat lost due to the construction of Duncan Dam. The channel plays a very important role for kokanee; it accounts for about 75% of total kokanee fry production in Kootenay Lake. Unless there is unusually high bear activity the spawning channel is open to the public for the duration of the spawning season, end of August to end of September.
Lardeau Valley Museum A little north of Meadow Creek Store and Drifters Restaurant, on Hwy 31 right after you see the Lardeau Valley Community Hall, is a small museum dedicated to local history. It is open during July and August or by appointment (email museum.lvhs@gmail.com.) Even if the museum is not open it’s worth stopping as there is a fair bit to see just roaming about the grounds. The buildings themselves are quite interesting and six interpretive signs posted outside give the visitor a sense of time and place back in the day. The history lessons become hands-on at the Lardeau Valley Fall Fair every year as some of the museum’s antique industrial equipment gets fired up and the processes demonstrated to the fair-goers.

A Wanderer’s Paradise
Revelstoke 1
Have you noticed the West Koot Route signs on the highway? The route brings you to a handful of lakeside towns and through deep mountain passes and river valleys. Roughly, it’s a circle that includes Nelson, the villages of Slocan City, Nakusp, and New Denver and alongside the west shore of Kootenay Lake from Ainsworth to Kaslo and then north to Meadow Creek. The area covered by the route boasts a bounty of low-trafficked attractions, including ‘wild’ and resort-style hot springs, several riverside rail trails for walking, biking, and birding, as well as beautifully restored ghost towns and museums. The West Koot route was established in 2014 by the Nakusp, Slocan Valley and Kaslo chambers of commerce. Connect the dots on your map and connect with nature as you travel these meandering highways and byways – the West Koot Route is a great way to add some form to your wandering.
