Gerald Ian Franklin

2019

Once again it is time to ask for nominations for Kaslo Citizen of the Year for 2019. This award is sponsored by the Kaslo & Area Chamber of Commerce. It is the Chamber’s way of saying Thank you to good neighbours for making life better for all of us. In making a nomination, keep in mind a few simple guidelines: 1. Recognition should have nothing to do with the nominee’s occupation. 2. We look for nominees who do good deeds for the people in the community, whether it is involvement in community organizations, or helping a neighbour weed the garden. When evaluating the nominations, thoughtful consideration is given to those whose good deeds are not necessarily well known. 3. Deadline for submissions is March 21, 2019. These awards have been presented annually, by the Chamber of Commerce, since 1986. They were presented occasionally in earlier years. Please send your nominations to Citizen of the Year 2019 Kaslo & Area Chamber of Commerce Box 329 Kaslo, BC V0G 1M0 kaslomaydays@gmail.com or drop off at Pennywise

Angel is a very sweet and friendly spayed 7-year-old girl who was transferred to the Nelson branch from the West Kootenay branch where she had been brought in as a stray. Angel would do well as an inside only cat as she loves companionship and has had a few homes in the past due to being lost from her owners. Angel loves to be petted and is looking for a home where she can lounge in the sun and cuddle with her owner! Hibernating little brown bats. Photo: Al Hicks

Help needed to monitor bat disease BC bats are threatened by disease and researchers are again asking for the public to help. White Nose Syndrome (WNS), a fungal disease responsible for the death of millions of bats in eastern North America, has moved to the west coast. Confirmed in Washington State just 150 km south of the BC–US border, the presence of the fungus is very worrisome for the health of our bat populations. The disease has near 100% mortality for some species of bats exposed to the fungus, including the familiar Little Brown Bat. Although devastating for bats, WNS does not affect humans. The Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) in collaboration with the BC government is requesting the public’s help in monitoring the spread of this disease. “We believe that our bats hibernate in relatively small groups across the province” says Leigh Anne Isaac, KCBP Coordinating Biologist. “Detecting WNS in our province will require many eyes on the ground”. The typical first sign of this disease is bats flying during the winter, an unusual sighting at a time of year when bats should be hibernating. Another sign of the presence of WNS is the appearance of dead bats outdoors as they succumb to the effects of WNS. “We are encouraging the public to report dead bats or any sightings of winter bat activity to the KCBP tollfree phone number, website, or email (included below). Bat carcasses will be submitted for testing for White Nose Syndrome and would provide the earliest indication of the presence of the disease in BC” says Isaac. Reports of winter bat activity will help focus research, monitoring and protection efforts. If you find a dead bat, report it to KCBP as soon as possible for further information. Never touch a dead bat with your bare hands. Please note that if you or your pet has been in direct contact with the bat you will need further information regarding the risk of rabies to you and your pet.

Currently there are no treatments for WNS. However, mitigating other threats to bat populations and preserving and restoring bat habitat may provide bat populations with the resilience to rebound. This is where the KCBP and the general public can help. Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, the Regional District of the East and Central Kootenays, Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Forest Enhancement Society of BC, Province of BC, and the Habitat Stewardship Program, the KCBP works with the government and others on public outreach activities, public reports of roosting bats in buildings and our citizen-science bat monitoring program. To contact KCBP, see www.bcbats.ca, email kootenay@ bcbats.ca or call 1-855-922-2287 ext. 14. Submitted by Leigh Anne Isaac

Gayle Kathleen Mihalynuk 1943 – 2019

Mother of four, grandmother of ten, great-grandmother of two, and ‘Mom’ to many, Gayle was an amazing, talented and determined personality; few people could resist her charm and sense of humour. Gayle was born in Beechy, Saskatchewan to Mona (nee Ostrander) and Floyd Robberstad, into a family with an itinerant lifestyle. She struck out on her own at age 14 and married George Mihalynuk at age 17. She and family put down roots in Abbotsford (where George passed), Kamloops, Devon, Nelson, and finally, in beloved Kaslo where she lived 30 of her 75 years. She was predeceased by her parents, and five siblings. Her stepsister Barbara Marian (nee Tavender) lives in Grand Forks. Multi-skilled and with boundless energy, there was almost no project she would not take on. She was a restaurateur, gardener, camp cook, waitress, welder, herbalist, realtor, renovator, and artist in paint, stained glass and other media. She was an incredible seamstress. A force of nature until her lungs began to fail. After battling her disease for over a decade, she surrendered on January 24, dying peacefully and with dignity. We are deeply grateful to the first responders, paramedics and the wonderful staff at the Nelson and Kaslo hospitals, and to all the volunteers who have helped to create such a welcoming and comfortable palliative care facility in Kaslo. Dearest Nana, you will live on in the thoughts and hearts of your kids Mitch, Shelly, Jodi and Tanis; grandkids Justin, Stevi, Hannah, Kayti, Brendan, Jocelyn, Liam, Shaeleen, Johnathan, and Ava; great-grandkids Keilani and Mikayla; extended family and the people who called you ‘Mom’; and many to whom you were a good friend. A celebration of Gayle’s life will be held this summer.

cont’d from pg 27 The program was created to support businesses, as well as non-profits, Indigenous organizations and local governments in the Basin. It helps solve the puzzle of finding the capacity and resources needed to hire and train new employees or plan for succession, while supporting graduates in finding employment in their chosen field. Fernie Brewing Co. is one of the businesses currently participating in the Trust’s Career Internship Program. Fernie Brewing experienced challenges in finding the right people to meet its growth needs and balancing everything against cost constraints. “As a smaller company, growth has to occur within an opportunity and the Career Internship Program provided that opportunity,” said Vicky Honsberger, HR Manager for Fernie Brewing. “The program allowed us to create a position that would provide value for the organization going forward and pay a competitive rate for a recent university graduate who has the potential to move into other roles and help grow the company.” The program may fund up to 50% of the new employee’s wage over the first seven to 12 months, to a maximum of $25,000. The intern position must include a training plan that provides structured learning to the new employee and transitions to full-time, permanent employment at the end of the internship. Musical summer at Selkirk College Make it a musical summer with the annual Fiddle, Guitar and Piano Workshop being held at the Selkirk College Castlegar Campus. This popular camp continues to provide some of Canada’s very best champion fiddlers as instructors, headed by Master Fiddler and the Order of Canada recipient, Gordon Stobbe from Nova Scotia. Several other first-rate instructors are joining Gord and will focus their teaching on piano and guitar accompaniment, with the music based upon east coast, old time fiddling. This week-long Fiddle, Guitar and Piano Camp, taking place from July 8 to 12, is suitable for all levels of skill and promises to be a memorable week. “This five day camp promises to be another year of offerings that will meet a wide range of interest and skill levels,” says Gary Shannon, president of the local fiddle club. “There will be a little something for everyone and a whole lot of fun and great memories. Whether you are at an absolute beginner or advanced level, everyone is welcome.” There are classes for fiddle, guitar and piano accompaniment, plus a variety of workshops on related topics such as step dancing, harmony, vocals and ‘What To Play When You Don’t Know The Tune’. In the evenings there will be events such as a family-friendly Old Time Dance, an instructor lead jam session at Millennium Park in Castlegar, a student concert and talent night and an instructor concert at Gyro Park in Trail. “This is a rare opportunity to hear some of the best fiddling and enjoy a fun old fashioned evening with the whole family,” says Shannon.
