Local schools celebrate Love of the Arts! The arts are powerful and transformative components of every student’s learning. For the next few weeks, the Kootenay Lake School District is bringing the arts into focus by focusing on the arts! In coming together to support and celebrate arts programming around the school district, student art events and programming will be the focus across multiple disciplines including music, dance, film, theatre and visual arts in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of arts education. “We will connect our students to meaningful, engaging arts experiences in their classrooms, schools and in communities across the district. Says Superintendent Dr. Christine Perkins. The celebration kicked off Saturday, January 26 with an Indigenous Cultural Celebration at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson. SPECIAL THANKS to RDCK: The Riondel & District Curling Club gratefully acknowledges and thanks the Regional District of Central Kootenay – District A and its Director, Mr. Garry Jackman for all their help in getting our curling rink upgraded to comply with current safety and health standards. After the Fernie Arena accident, safety inspections were required for all arenas in British Columbia. Our curling rink was inspected and VHYHUDO GHŵ FLHQFLHV ZHUH QRWHG WKDW QHHGHG LPPHGLDWH FRUUHFWLRQ for continued operation of our curling club. Funding of these corrections was beyond our club’s means, so RDCK stepped in to help keep our curling club open for use by the residents of the East Shore of Kootenay Lake. All required upgrades have now been completed and our curling club is back in use. Our curling league is playing four times per week and will continue throughout the winter, allowing local residents the opportunity for physical recreation and social contact through the coldest months of the year. Without the help of RDCK, this facility would likely close down and never be re-opened. Once again, the Riondel & District Curling Club thanks the Regional District of Central Kootenay for all their assistance in keeping our curling facility operational and safe. Sincerely, Mark Easton, on behalf of Board of Directors & Members

Free For Free Anika Wallace (sixth from left) gathers with the students at the Ecole D’Arts et de Musique de Nyundo in Rwanda.
World of opportunity! A pair of Selkirk College alumni have returned from Rwanda and Jamaica with a transformational understanding of the world around them and their future in it. Anika Wallace and Brodie Parachoniak graduated from the Contemporary Music & Technology Program in 2018 and 2017 and recently returned from six-month Global Affairs Canada international internships that provide opportunities for post-secondary graduates between the ages of 19 and 30. “This internship was one of the best steps I’ve made for myself towards a more serene and uplifting future, says Wallace, who spent six months as a music/English instructor with Ecole D’Arts et de Musique de Nyundo in Rwanda. “I am content with what it has given me and I feel humbled to have had this opportunity to grow and explore myself and a new country. Selkirk College, along with partners Bow Valley College and College of the Rockies, offers eight placements funded by Global Affairs Canada through the International Youth Internship Program for a total of 28 placements for graduates of diplomas or degrees. The eight Selkirk Collegesponsored internships are based in Rwanda, Guatemala, Jamaica and Kenya with range of projects and skill sets required. The college is currently accepting applications for the 2019 internships with a deadline of January 31. Parachoniak took the opportunity to get involved in international development in order to step outside his comfort zone and experience a new culture. He headed to Jamaica, where he filled the role of social media officer at the Women’s Resource & Outreach Centre in Kingston between June and December. Now living back in his native Manitoba, Parachoniak says working for six months in a new culture changed the way he looks at the world.

Phyllis Scarbo
October 24 1918 – January 19 2019 For those who had the fortune of knowing her, please learn now that Phyllis Scarbo passed away on January 19, 2019 in Kaslo. Her caregiver and great friend Michelle Hansen, and the compassionate care team of the Victorian Community Health Centre, were in close attendance. Many thanks also to Lisa Ross for her care in our mother’s final days. Phyllis was born in Arbroath Scotland, and immigrated to Sterling Ontario in 1928. She married Edward Derek Beacham in 1941 and they had three children: James, Alan and Evanne. The family moved to Calgary AB in 1956. Phyllis married her second husband, Adelard Joseph Scarbo, in 1969 and they made their home in Kaslo BC in 1974. They quickly became involved in community affairs and Phyllis was a member of the RCL Ladies Auxiliary, the Kaslo Seniors, and for several years she was one of the Singing Grannies. She loved nature from an early age and was a talented artist. She could often be seen walking in Kaslo accompanied by one of her shelties. She was predeceased by her husband Joe, son James and grandson John. She is survived by son Alan Beacham (Jane), daughter Evanne Rowland, grandchildren Adam (Loretta), Bryden, Jason, Marcia (Aaron), Richard, William(Noreen) and six great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered by Joe’s daughters in Ontario: Betty, Donna, Joanne, Judy, and Lucy and their children and grandchildren. As Phyllis wished, no formal service will be held. A private memorial will take place at a later date. PAGE 22

Planning to retire soon? For many of us, the idea of retirement conjures visions of leisure, travel and time for projects. But all that free time can be daunting, too. And as the biggest demographic wave in Canada’s history reaches retirement age, help with the emotional and mental aspects of retirement can be as important as financial wellbeing. On Thursday, February 14 at 7 pm at the Nelson Public Library, Certified Retirement Coach Wendy Lacroix will offer tips for a successful retirement beyond the honeymoon period. The presentation is free to the public. Submitted by Anne DeGrace

Otessa is a beautiful and loving 9-year-old spayed female who was surrendered to the BC SPCA Nelson Branch due to her owners’ allergies. Otessa can be quite shy at first meeting but warms up quickly as she is very friendly and loves attention. This sweet lady has a lot of love to give but she’d be best suited to a home without other cats as she prefers to have you all to herself., although, according to her previous home, she’s good with both kids and dogs! For more information on Otessa, or to meet her, please contact the BC SPCA Nelson Branch at 250-352-7178.
