I had previously been unfamiliar with felting, but I now saw it as an exciting and limitless medium.” Wiltse is using her time in the studio to personally process the recent loss of her daughter to cancer. “To have this rare opportunity to completely set aside three weeks for the purpose of making a new piece of art has been quite fulfilling. CHILD SUPPORT FOR STEP-CHILDREN Blended families – where children from previous relationships come into the new family unit – are quite common these days. But just like with a first marriage, making such a blended family work doesn’t always pan out. If you split up, do you as a stepparent (say, the step-father) have to pay child support for your ex’s children, even though you’re not their biological parent? While the primary child support obligation rests with the children’s biological parents, the answer is “yes” in many cases. BC’s family law considers you a step-parent if you were a “spouse” of that child’s parent and lived with them for part of the child’s life. (Note you could be a step-parent though you never married your ex – you’re also a “spouse” if you lived with your ex in a marriage-like relationship for two years or had a child together.) Basically, if you’re a step-parent, your ex can look to you if you contributed to the support of that child for at least one year. But your ex has to ask the court for this within one year after you stopped that support. Take a simple scenario. Let’s say Rob and Laura have a casual relationship that results in a daughter, Jenny. That relationship comes to an end. Years later, Laura marries Peter and he lives with Laura and Jenny as a family for several years. Unfortunately, things don’t work out, and Laura and Peter ultimately split up. While married, the couple split family expenses – the mortgage and other house expenses as well as the family’s food bill.

After the split, Peter keeps in touch and helps with some of Jenny’s expenses for a while, but then he stops those. Here, Jenny’s mom Laura and biological dad Rob are the parents primarily responsible for Jenny’s child support (even though Rob has been out of the picture for a long time). But Laura can also ask the court for child support from Peter within a year after he stops contributing to Jenny’s support. Our courts would use guidelines and various other factors to decide how much each of the three has to contribute to Jenny’s support. Maybe Rob is still around and able to pay his share, and perhaps between him and Laura, there’s enough money to support Jenny fully. But if not, Peter may be on the hook for a share as well. And if Rob can’t be found or can’t pay, Peter may potentially be responsible for a substantial share of Jenny’s support. How long (or briefly) a step-parent lived with their spouse and step-child, and what standard of living the step-child had while living with the step-parent are factors that affect a step-parent’s child support obligations. The courts will look at the whole picture to decide on support amount due, with a view to the stepchild’s best interests. Each blended family and step-parenting situation is unique, and the rules are complicated. Your family lawyer can help you sort out child support.

CATHERINE RAE SAWYER 1949 -2018 Rae passed away peacefully at Kaslo Hospital on Nov. 2, 2018, after a complex history of health concerns. She was born in La Toque, Quebec to John and Joyce Sawyer, both originally from Manitoba. The family relocated to British Columbia, when she was young, where Rae attended school in Vancouver and Castlegar. Upon graduation she worked for the Law Society of BC. In 1974 Rae followed friends to Kaslo looking for a simpler lifestyle away from the big city. She was hired as Secretary for the Village(May 1975) and later became the Village Clerk/Tax Collector and Treasurer (May 1986). Rae earned her degree from the University of Victoria in Public Sector Management in 1987. She was a member of the Local Government Management Association (LGMA) since 1984, served in their board and was recognized in 2012 for her contributions with a long time service award. Rae was extremely dedicated to public service work. She was involved with Emergency Management and held several certificates through the Justice Institute of BC. After her retirement in 2014 she continued to volunteer with emergency social services and enjoyed her volunteer time at Abbey Manor in Kaslo and at the Kaslo Food Hub.

Left to remember Rae and love her forever are her only sister Kim (Krogstad), brother-in-law Roald. her nieces whom she adored, Tia and Alina, and her great nephew Beckett. She will be sadly missed by many friends near and far. Special thanks go to the many health care providers at Kaslo Hospital, Kootenay Lake Hospital (Nelson) and Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (Trail) where she received much appreciated care and compassion during the last few years of her life. Rae loved calling Kaslo her home for 44 years. She enjoyed all the beauty the Kootenays offered her, good company on her porch in the summer surrounded by baskets of flowers and following her favourite British TV shows, particularly Coronation Street. She loved her community and also cherished her privacy. There will be no immediate memorial service. Rae’s remaining ashes will be spread on Kootenay Lake by her family in the spring.

Charlie Spokane Charlie is a sweet and playful one-year-old female looking for her forever home. She is affectionate and cuddly, and she loves to play and chase toys around the house. Charlie was originally brought it as a stray and was then surrendered to us because she did not get along with the dog in her new home. She would prefer to be the only pet. Although she doesn’t like dogs, she is great with kids and enjoys playing with them. For more information about this amazing girl, please contact the BC SPCA Nelson branch at 250-352-7178.

SUDOKU

Here’s how it works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

No one in Kootenays should have to face the dementia journey alone

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias affect thousands of British Columbians, but asking for or receiving the diagnosis can be challenging and families often don’t know what to do. No one should have to face the dementia journey alone; that’s why the Alzheimer Society of BC offers the First Link® Dementia Helpline (1-800-936-6033) in the Kootenays and across the province. A toll-free phone line, the First Link® Dementia Helpline is for anyone who lives with dementia or is a care partner to someone who does. It’s also for people concerned about their memory, people who work with people living with dementia or any member of the public who would like to know more. “Someone might call in because they’re starting to see changes in themselves or someone close to them and want to learn more about the warning signs and how to get a diagnosis,” says Maribeth Friesen, Support and Education Coordinator for the Alzheimer Society of BC’s Kootenay Resource Centre. “Most callers are caregivers who need to know who to call or where to turn; we guide them towards services that will help them build the skills and confidence to live with dementia.” The helpline is also a resource for people who haven’t felt comfortable reaching out because of fear. “They’re the people who haven’t reached out at all until it’s a crisis,” Friesen says. “We walk them through scenarios and help them understand how they could respond to people living with dementia.” Kootenay residents who call the helpline will be connected to the full range of services offered through the Alzheimer Society of BC’s First Link® dementia support, including support groups, community resources and education workshops for every stage of the journey. First Link® offers education like Shaping the journey: living with dementia®, a six-week series that Deanne was able to participate in with her mother. Kootenay residents who are concerned about dementia can call the First Link® Dementia Helpline (1-800-936-6033) or visit alzheimerbc.org. They are encouraged to speak with their health-care provider about whether or not a referral to First Link® dementia support would help them. Submitted by Alzheimer Society of BC

On Demand HIV testing now available across the Interior

Getting tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) just got easier for residents across the Interior Health (IH) region, now that On Demand testing is available at all IH laboratories. Patients can now visit any IH lab and get an HIV test without having to first visit their physician or nurse practitioner. Patients can fill out a lab requisition on their own and take it to the lab, ask the lab for the test to be done, or ask to have the test added to existing bloodwork being ordered. On Demand HIV testing began in Interior Health in 2016 with an innovative partnership with Valley Medical Laboratories in the Okanagan. Based on the success of that program, Interior Health is excited to now be expanding the service across the region. Early diagnosis is vital for treatment of HIV, but one in four people living with HIV don’t know it. Patients who request a test at an IH lab will be provided with information about the test and the follow-up process for both negative and positive results. Results are available two weeks after the test occurs. There is no additional follow up for patients who test negative. Patients who test positive will be contacted by a nurse who will provide support, education, follow-up care, and referral to a physician when needed. Non-nominal testing for HIV is not done through the On Demand program. If a patient wishes to test without their name, this can be done through a family physician

or nurse practitioner. On Demand HIV testing is a partnership between Interior Health Laboratory Services and the STOP HIV program, which aims to reduce transmission and improve the health outcomes of those living with HIV. To find the IH lab nearest you, please visit interiorhealth.ca/findlab

Kootenay zone wins big at Provincials

L.V. Rogers athlete Matti Erickson has set another new record with his 2nd consecutive first place finish at this year’s Provincial High School Cross Country Championships. Competing against over 270 runners, Matti previously tied for gold in the Junior Boys division race (Gr. 9/10) at the provincial event in Nanaimo. Matti came first in 2017 as one of the younger athletes in the Jr. Boys division, which was also a first for the Kootenay zone. This year was an exciting photo finish when he crossed the line with a runner from South Delta zone at exactly the same time. For full race results, visit: http://www.bcxc.ca ...continued on page 44

...continued from page 42 No Kootenay athlete has ever placed in any of the topthree positions of this provincial event since they began keeping records in 1970. And now Matti Erickson has won gold two years in a row! “In this sport, every school competes on an even playing field regardless of size” explains Jon Francis, School District 8 Principal and zone rep for the Kootenays. “Matti was running against kids from all the biggest schools on the coast and the island, and for him to take gold two years in a row is something our district is incredibly proud of!” This year, the Kootenay zone was represented by 50 athletes, the largest showing from this zone ever at the provincial level. Francis has seen a steady progression of athlete participation since he first got involved 15 years ago. Historically, with so few athletes in the race, the Kootenay zone had not been much of a contender at this level. The zone includes both the East and West Kootenay geographical regions. Congratulations to Matti for his outstanding athletic achievement and to all the Kootenay zone athletes on their excellent representation at this event.
