Being part of the hospice team is one of the most rewarding ways to spend one’s time. In many ways, knowing that you have helped someone during their final days on earth is similar to rejoicing a birth. The moments are often filled with tender compassion and caring. Supporting families during this time of separation provides one with a sense of deep reward and satisfaction. You can be part of a well-respected group of people who help those in need. An hour or two of your time, once or twice a month goes a long way to helping others in your community. The Greater Trail Hospice Society is holding their annual volunteer training program over the course of five weeks, starting Tuesday, October 7 to November 4. Classes will be from 6 pm to 9 pm and held at the KIRO Wellness Centre, 1500 Columbia Avenue in Trail. The cost is $35, which covers all course materials, instruction fees, as well as tea/coffee/snacks. Bursaries are available. Please call the office at 250-364-6204 to register. All welcome. AFTER YOU’VE READ the best bargains around, please recycle the Pennywise.

Fall Fair At Cottonwood Market With harvest season here again, it is time to get ready for the 7th Annual Fall Fair on Saturday, September 27 from 10 am to 2 pm at Cottonwood Community Market at Cottonwood Falls Park in Nelson. In the true spirit of an agricultural fair, there will be a contest for best locally grown fruits and vegetables, home preserves, home baked pies and more. Additionally, there will be live music provided by Cottonwood Market favourites Morien Jones and Brian Rosen. From the early twentieth century through 1966, Nelson hosted a big and busy fall fair every year. Longtime Nelson residents remember the event with fondness and some still have their prize ribbons stashed away in their basements. After a forty plus year hiatus, the EcoSociety decided to revive the fall fair in 2008. Since the benefits of locally produced food are now commonly understood and since there are so many excellent products grown here in the West Kootenay, it was decided that all the contest categories would focus on locally produced and prepped food. This means that for the home preserves and home baking categories, contestants will be asked to use as many locally produced ingredients as possible and include an ingredient list with each entry. There is no entry fee and no limit to the number of categories an individual can enter. All entries must be dropped off between 9:30 am and 10:30 am. Judging will take place late morning and the prizes will be awarded at noon. For specific information on the fall fair rules and categories, please visit www.cosociety.ca/markets/fall-fair Even if you don’t think you’ll be entering anything in

Up And Out Of The Mud In honour of Valentine, Rachel, Diana Webber and Petra, Dr. Lynn Migdal (Webber) will be presenting free informative workshops describing her experiences as a home/landowner, mother and doctor, after losing her entire family and two homes in the Johnsons Landing mud slide in 2012. Dr. Migdal (Webber) is a chiropractor, chiro chi reiki master, energy intuitive, author, international workshop leader and breath of life coach. She has 33 years of experience teaching thousands how to successfully heal their bodies and their lives. Her workshop entitled Up and Out of the Mud! will be teaching techniques that can help all to heal from any loss, including sudden multiple deaths, and post-traumatic stress syndrome. She will also be speaking on land and home owners’ sacred rights during and after natural disasters, how one can climb out of the mud of the past, and how to move forward honouring eternal love. She has created a not-for-profit organization in honour of her children that teaches all to look up from technology and up at life. She states “If I can look up…anyone can!” Up and Out of the Mud will be presented on Tuesday, October 7 at 7 pm at the Langham in Kaslo and Wednesday, October 8, 1 pm at Argenta Hall. For more information please visit lookingupthemovement.org and Migdalchiropractic.com or call 561-322-6735 to find out about future dates in Nelson, workshops and healing sessions! Calling All Young Seniors! COSCO is coming to Nelson to inspire leadership training for young seniors. COSCO (Council Of Seniors’ Citizens Organizations of British Columbia) is presenting a two day workshop in Nelson on October 8-9, for senior’s organizations and those organizations working with seniors. Learning in Retirement is organizing the event. Seniors organizations are struggling with the fact that their leaders are aging and their ranks are thinning. A number of organizations have already folded and to counter this trend, COSCO is offering this workshop to entice younger seniors to develop leadership skills. The workshop will deal with a wide range of issues such as leadership and changing demographics, requirements and qualities of leadership, criteria for effective seniors organizations, conducting meetings, searching out talented volunteers, networking and lobbying, and advocacy and referrals. Register with Selkirk College by October 1 in person or phone 250-354-3220 (ask for Val). Enrollment is limited to 30 participants, minimum of 15. Workshop and reference materials are provided free by COSCO. Snacks and two lunches $15. Contact information: jo.sandkuhl@gmail. com or pategibson@gmail.com.

Supporting The Bereaved For those who have lost someone through death, the cycle of loss through detachment, despair and anger to recovery can be a lonely, frightening and overwhelming experience, even when family and friends are trying to support us. A grief support group provides a safe, supportive environment where the bereaved can learn that the way they are experiencing their grief is normal and very individual. Grief is a healthy response to loss that needs to be acknowledged and expressed before we can move on. Working through feelings about losses and sharing them with others who are also grieving decreases our isolation and loneliness while helping us learn how to experience and work through our pain. Nelson & District Hospice Society is offering a free Grief Support Series for anyone grieving the loss of someone through death. The group will run for four weeks starting Thursday, October 2 until October 23 from 6 to 8 pm. Pre-registration is required but attendance is free. For more information and/or to register, please call Nelson Hospice at 250-3522337 or info@nelsonhospice.org. Pennywise

The Friends of Lardeau River, the Kootenay Conservation Program and the Friends of Kootenay Lake are teaming up to organize a community shoreline clean-up in the north end of Kootenay Lake. On Sunday, September 28, 10 am – 1 pm we will rendezvous at the Argenta boat launch (4.3 km south from intersection of Duncan Lake Road and Argenta Johnsons Landing Road.) Take action against shoreline garbage by joining us. Bring your boots and work gloves. There will also be a BBQ and refreshments on the beach to fuel the volunteers! “Although this is quite a pristine area, there is a lot of garbage along the shoreline at the north end of Kootenay Lake. This event will be a great opportunity for community members to help the environment and socialize by the lakeshore,” commented Claire de la Salle, Friends of Kootenay Lake program manager. For more information contact: Claire de la Salle, email: info@ friendsofkootenaylake.ca, 250777-2955.

Meet Human Solutions Author Human Solutions is a chilling and accomplished debut novel about cults, crime, and the lengths we’ll go for love by author Avi Silberstein. It is inspired by the true story of Paul Schäfer, an ex-Nazi who founded the Colonia Dignidad in Chile in the late 1970s. To most people, Javier Gonzalez is an ordinary man. If you were to ask him, he would tell you that he runs an acting studio in Santiago, Chile. However, only a handful of people know that Javier also runs an unusual sort of business. With the help of a team of actors, Javier engineers social situations that meet the unique needs of his clients. If you want your boss to like you, he can help; if you want the weatherman to fall in love with you, he can arrange it. He calls his business Human Solutions, and that is exactly what he provides. And he is good. Javier is precise, observant and emotionally ruthless, and his manipulations never fail – until the day he slips up. One of his clients ends up tangled in a cult run by an ex-Nazi with torturous ties to the Pinochet dictatorship, a man with no conscience or fear – and Javier quickly realizes that he may have met his match. Avi Silberstein was born in Chile in 1982. He moved to Canada in 2000. He is the director of the Grand Forks & District Public Library. Human Solutions was featured on CBC’s All Points West Summer Reading List, quite a feat for a first time novelist. The Kootenay Library Federation and participating libraries are sponsoring a Fall Kootenay/Boundary Tour. Avi Silbertein will be at the Kaslo & District Public Library on Wednesday, October 1 at 7 pm. This is your chance to meet a promising young writer and to learn more about the political intrigue of the Pinochet regime in Chile. Along with Avi we are having a Surprise Book Exchange. Bring a book you would like to exchange, the book will be put into a brown bag and placed on the table, at the end of the night you can select one of the “surprise booksâ€? from the table. For more information contact the Kaslo Library or go to our website at: http://kaslo.bc.libraries.coop/

welcome to participate in this event. Hospice services in our area are increasing as awareness of the importance of supportive programs surrounding death and dying grows. Events such as this one are held all over the world to raise support and awareness for the work of Hospice organizations. Participants start with pledge forms, and an information sheet available at Kaslo Florist, Sunnyside Naturals, Cornucopia, Pennywise, Kaslo Seniors Hall, and Willow Home Gallery. Once donors have pledged donations for the walkers, they are ready to arrive at the festive registration area in the Kemball garden, 312 4th Street. Come by 1 pm on Sunday, and you will be given a map and last minute instructions. The 5 km route, which will be supervised by volunteers, covers both a 1.5 km easy “scooter” portion and a longer, naturally beautiful Kaslo River Trail portion. The full hike will take approximately 2 hours. Refreshments will be served afterwards, and prizes will be given for a number of categories, including the one with most money collected from pledges. Event organizer Hospice Society of North Kootenay Lake wishes to thank our co-sponsor Willow Home Gallery and all who are out there making pledges for our hike participants to raise funds for hospice. We invite you to come and enjoy the afternoon. Questions? Call Debra at 250-353-7671.

Setting Priorities In The Valley

would benefit the area the most. With support from Columbia Basin Trust, the Slocan Valley Economic Development Commission (a body of RDCK) is launching the Slocan Valley Directed Fund. The CBT initiative helps sub-regions (a group of communities from a recognized area) to come together to plan, set priorities and allocate funds for the long-term betterment of the area as whole. The funds are to benefit the entire area, not individual local community projects. The Slocan Valley, through the Economic Development Commission, will receive $300,000 in the first three years with the hope that the funding continues into the future. According to Leah Main, chair of the commission, “It’s a good news story, but not without a challenge. The good news is we get $100,000 a year for three years from CBT, and get to create our priorities and the process to use the money. Doing that, of course, is also the challenge.” There will be ten meetings held in the valley, some open community sessions, where all ideas for projects will be discussed and some meetings with a specific theme. Anyone may attend any meeting. The consulting group Withinsight Services, of Nelson, will facilitate the meetings and produce recommendations for the commission. The commission will then choose a small number of priorities to fund over the next few years. All projects must have an impact on the whole valley in some way. According to Main, “We will thread our way through the process and create an approach for using the money that responds to needs of the broader Slocan Valley Community. This will help in a substantive way to achieve the vision of social, economic, cultural and environmental development.” An online survey may be found at www.surveymonkey.com/s/slocanvalley and paper versions may be obtained through village offices and the Economic Development Commission at 250-226-0064. To find out where these meetings will be held, and for further information Gary Ockenden, ockenden@ netidea.com or 250-777-3064.

The Celebration Of A Century... On October 1, Argenta will be celebrating one hundred years of postal service. As those of you who live or have lived in Argenta (and there are many spread out across the Kootenays and the globe) know, our post office could be considered the heart of our community – and therefore well deserving of celebratory activities. We now have three lovely images which are being made into commemorative stamps to celebrate this event. The unveiling of the winning pieces will be on October 1, at 2 pm
in Argenta. Once the speechifying and unveiling of images is done, victuals and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for all who join us. History, in the form of artefacts and facts, will be shared as well. We also invite you to bring along your best penmanship. There will be (free) cards in a stamped envelope (using some of the above mentioned stamps) for you to write a note to someone. Your local MLA? Your grandchild? Your life long pal? You will be able to mail it, with the actual 100th anniversary date stamped on it – from the P.O. (which is open that day). See you there! Info: argentapo100@gmail.com

Bobby Hutchinson’s Blue Collar B&B, was chosen as this year’s One Book One Kootenay (OBOK) because, it made people laugh. The two other shortlisted OBOK titles had their champions. The stories in, South of Elfrida by Holley Rubinsky, were well written and insightful. Africa’s Unfinished Symphony By Lucia Mann, was powerful and thought provoking. But, the light-hearted anecdotes about the guests at the Blue Collar B&B, struck the right note with the readers, who voted, at their local libraries, for this year’s OBOK. “I’m totally amazed, thrilled and delighted! I’m over the moon excited. Bobby Hutchinson exclaimed, when she found out her book, Blue Collar B&B, was selected. Such an effervescent reaction is typical of this vivacious author, who was described by a journalist for the Arrow Lakes News as, “eloquent and charismatic. Libraries in the Kootenays will be hosting Bobby Hutchinson at OBOK events in October. Details of her tour will be on www.obok.ca website by mid-September. If you haven’t read Blue Collar B&B yet, it is available at your local public library. OBOK is a Kootenay Library Federation initiative and supported by public libraries in the Kootenay/Boundary. A sponsorship grant from the Columbia Basin Trust assists with funding the OBOK Tours.

From The Forest Floor To Your Floor
We live in an area that is dependent on our forests. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work “in the bush”? What is going on in those cutblocks? Sometimes we see the huge forestry machines on flatbed trailers driving by on the highway – they look intimidating – massive and complicated. But it’s our neighbours who operate them. It’s a living, and has been for generations for many families in our area. In recognition of National Forest Week (September 21 – 27) the board of the Kaslo & District Community Forest Society would like to invite you on a tour of our forests – from the mosses and fungi on the forest floor – to logging and trucking – to the art and science of tending to the new growth on the cutovers. Peter McAllister, a woodlot owner and mushroom expert, will be your Kaslo River trail guide. Learn about forest ecology – how to identify tree species and their uses, mushrooms and other plants on the forest floor. Sabrina Mutterer, the community forest’s silviculture manager, will explain forest and woodlot stewardship. At cut block #34 up Kemp Creek, watch (from a safe distance!) as Settle Holdings demonstrate the harvesting equipment. Stan Baker will be your guide to how the timber on the slopes gets to the mill, eventually becoming the house you live in. Two tours are scheduled for Saturday, September 27. The first tour will start at 10:30 am, the second at 11:30; the meeting place to begin is the Kaslo River Trail pedestrian bridge. It is expected that each tour will take between an hour and a half to two hours. This is a rare chance to get a guided tour of the forest and forestry operations in our area. Please pre-register if you can by calling 250-353-7492. Drop-ins at the beet-coloured bridge are okay too. A snack and transportation to the block and later, back to your cars or the trailhead will be provided. Submitted by Erika Bird, KDCFS Chair
There’s No Place Like Home He spent all summer training and fundraising, and then another 11 days on the road cycling for local children. Cst. Rob Gardner returned Sunday from a ten day, 1000 km cycling journey across southeastern British Columbia as a part of the Cops for Kids Ride Team. The annual PAGE 40

event raises funds and awareness for children in medical, physical and traumatic crisis in our region, for the funding of medical equipment, therapies, travel to Children’s Hospital, learning and mobility aids. Since 2001, Cops for Kids has raised over $2.7 million in support of local children and this year’s event added a record-breaking $260,000 to that total. During the ten day ride, Cops for Kids rode into 18 different communities across the region, where they were generously hosted by local restaurants, hotels and service groups to keep the team fueled and rested for the road. “It was great to arrive into my hometown of Castlegar on day three,” said Gardner. “After climbing the Paulson Summit, it was a nice coast down the hill to Boston Pizza where we were met by our Little Ambassadors and friends who generously opened their doors to feed and host the team, before our overnight rest at the Super 8.” “This was such a rewarding experience,” he added. “We all know that it’s a tough physical challenge, but to be rewarded by those smiling faces of the kids who benefit from our efforts is really what makes it all worthwhile.” Cops for Kids provide assistance directly to children who need it most from our region. Due to the overwhelming number of grant requests, they are unable to meet the demands and have established a wait list of children needing essential medical equipment, specialized therapies, and medical travel. Although their signature event has wrapped up for the year, their need for funding lasts throughout the year. The group currently has a wait list for funding, and they require year-round donations to fund their requests until the 2015 ride. “I was one of the top fundraisers on the team this year,” summarized Gardner. “And while I know I’ve got my work cut out for me to maintain that reputation as a top fundraiser on the team, I’m committed to make next year even bigger and better.” To make a donation please visit the website at www. copsforkids.org
Chorealis Vocal Ensemble In Kaslo Chorealis Vocal Ensemble, as part of their fall tour, Pathways of Love, will have the pleasure of singing for a Kaslo audience on Sunday afternoon, October 5, 2 pm at St. Andrew’s United Church. The ensemble’s 11 members all live in the Okanagan, from Salmon Arm through to Kelowna, and have been enthusiastically singing together since 2008. Chorealis performs a broad range of music, both sacred and secular. They especially love singing early music, from English madrigals to Latin motets, but are equally adept at more modern repertoire, be it classical composition or beloved Beatles’ tune. The Chorealis Ensemble is a unique vocal group, in that they do not have a conductor. Instead, all singers contribute to create their fine, harmonious and unaccompanied sound. On October 5, Chorealis will present selections by Passerau, Holst, Stenhammar, Corelli, Lennon and McCartney and Piazzolla. Tickets are $15 and available at Sunnyside Naturals, Willow Home Boutique and at the door. Submitted by Gloria Brooks

Language Opens New Worlds It’s one of the most important foundations of a shrinking world. Teaching English as an additional language is vital to commerce, community and creating conversations between cultures. This October, BC Teachers of an Additional Language (BC TEAL) will hold its 2014 Interior Regional Conference at the Selkirk College, Nelson, Tenth Street Campus. More than 100 teachers, administrators and community leaders will take in the one-day event at Mary Hall. “People are always going to want to learn English, that’s the bottom line,” says Tyler Ballam, the Selkirk College instructor who is heading up the organization of the conference. “How that’s delivered is where there is the dialogue.” The theme for the conference is Interior Designs: Building Teaching and Learning Communities. The idea of building connections throughout communities is central to the conference concept, considering most in attendance work in areas far removed from the Lower Mainland. Though immigration is more pronounced in the larger urban centres, Ballam says his colleagues face similar challenges and put forward similar goals. “You are not just a teacher,” he says. “For many of these students you are their first point of contact when they come to Canada. You are representing Canada and the place you live because they are dealing with culture shock. That adds to the stress because you are not just teaching a language, you are important to their lives, their success and their happiness.” Dr. Scott Douglas, a University of British Columbia instructor and author, will be the plenary speaker at the BC TEAL conference in Nelson. There will also be a number of other presentations and group discussions involved during the day-long event. Ballam says it’s important to bring together a group of people who are working towards the same goal of helping improve communication across borders and cultures. “Teachers talk about different perspectives on how to teach different cultures,” he says. “It’s not just ESL, it’s really just working with international students in variety of contexts.” The conference takes place on October 4 at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus. Registration is now open at bcteal.org

What’s Going on in the Forest? You are invited to a 2 hour tour of the forest.
From moss & fungi to logs on a truck.
Saturday, Sept 27 2 Tours: 10:30 and 11:30am
Rookie
Learn about forest ecology along the river trail, then head out to the cutblocks near Southfork and see what a bush job (treeplanting, brushing, road building, cable yarding, trucking) is all about.
ROOKIE is a super friendly 4 year old chocolate lab cross, who weighs in at under 70 pounds. She loves other dogs, kids, people in general. She is good in the car and on the leash. She will bark protectively, but not recreationally. Rookie is spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated. Rookie has experienced being abandoned, and thus she is too anxious when she is alone. She needs the company of another friendly dog, and someone home most of the day. She also needs a good secure fence, as she loves to visit other dogs or people, and is not road smart. Some homebody out there with a dog, and good fence, is going to very happy to get this amazing dog. Call KAAP at 250-551-1053 or visit kaap.ca/adopt/rookie.
Transportation and a snack provided. Your forest guides will be Peter McAllister, Sabrina Mutterer (KDCFS Silviculture Manager), Glen and John Settle, and Stan Baker. Meet up at the Kaslo River Trail pedestrian bridge.
