Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to present the launch of K.L. Kivi’s first book of poetry on April 10 at 7 pm during poetry month. Unknown Hum is Kivi’s first collection of poetry but the themes of her poems will resonate with those familiar with her work. Unknown Hum explores the terrain of living a mindful life passionately engaged with the natural world and activist politics. “If my novels rise from my emotional self and my creative documentary from my mind, my poetry reflects on the spiritual earth from which all my life’s work grows,” says Kivi. “I will read poems as well as speak to the ways in which we can flourish as human beings in these challenging times.” Kivi is well-known throughout the Kootenays for her work on the Jumbo Wild! campaign, her work with the Sinixt Nation on issues of self-determination, as the editor and publisher at Maa Press and as the author of eight books including The Inner Green, the novel Letter from Lubumbashi and the anthology The Purcell Suite. Kivi will co-present the evening with Pemberton based author Katherine Fawcett who is in Nelson to launch her latest book. The Little Washer of Sorrows is a collection of short fiction that explores what happens when the expected and usual are replaced with elements of the rare and strange. The book’s emotional impact is created with strong, richly drawn characters facing universal issues in unusual settings. The collection is both dark and comical with engaging plot twists and elements of the macabre as characters attempt to cope with high-stakes melodramas that drift further out of their control. Admission is by donation and everyone is welcome. Oxygen Art Centre is located at 320 Vernon Street (back alley entrance) in Nelson. Submitted by Oxygen Art Centre

Healthy Child Day

Healthy Child Day, a free special event for families with young children, is set for Friday, April 24. Health and wellness services for families will be highlighted, with information displays and staff with expertise on infant development, dental health, hearing, speech and language development, reflexology, herbal approaches to wellness, physio and occupational therapies, and more. All families with young children are welcome to this free event at WE Graham Community School in Slocan, from 10 am to 1 pm on Friday, April 24. It can be challenging for families to know where to access information they need to support their young children, so the aim is to bring all of the health service providers together in one place and make it a fun day for families. Professionals will be coming from Nelson, Trail, Castlegar and the Slocan Valley to share their information and connect with families. As parents celebrate milestones and face ever-changing challenges with their babies, toddlers and preschoolers, they often have many questions about where their child is at, and what to expect next. Individual sessions with a trained consultant will be available throughout the day to help parents understand their child’s stage of development, and offer ideas or resources to support them. The sessions use a play-based approach with the child and a parent questionnaire (Ages & Stages). Call soon to book one of these fun and informative sessions, as limited time slots are available. Call Penny at 250-226-7605. Crafts and activities for the children, plus a circle time of songs and stories, are all part of the day. A nutritious lunch and door prizes will be provided.

Would Your Acreage Benefit From Soil Amendment? Zellstoff Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using Biosolids as soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options. Zellstoff Celgar will cover the costs of the consultant to perform soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of the fresh Biosolids based on access with a large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating the Biosolids into their soil.

Yard & Yardage Returns!

On Sunday, April 26 from 10 am to 2 pm, the Slocan Valley Threads Guild will be the place to be, when the popular Yard and Yardage Sale returns. Inside, tables will be laden with great deals on fabric, fibre craft supplies, notions and related books and patterns. Outside, at the garden centre, you can buy perennial plants, get tips from experienced gardeners and visit with friends and neighbours. Everything is reasonably priced. Savory lunch items and sweet snacks, teas and coffee will be served in the tearoom area. You can sit and socialize or wander to enjoy demonstrations and the display of a variety of the art and fine crafts made by talented members of the Threads Guild during the past year. Information about the guild and memberships will be available, should you be inspired to join. The Slocan Valley Threads Guild is located where Highway 6 meets the Perry’s Siding Back Road, a five minute drive north of Winlaw. Plan a Sunday drive on a spring morning to feed your soul. If you need further info call Sharon at 250-226-7703. This is a free event. No dogs please. Submitted By Lois Lawrence

Family Fun Day Equine Awareness Safety Education

The Slocan Valley Outriders Association (SVOA) is a local horse club whose members are committed to enjoying our equine friends safely while sharing the trails and roads with all other users. We are proud to invite the public to our riding grounds and equestrian facility in the Village of Slocan for this FREE family fun day on Saturday April 18, 10 am till 2 pm, Arlington Rd, Slocan. E.A.S.E is more than equine awareness safety education. Our riding club is hosting this event to promote safe

practices and respect between vehicle drivers, industrial traffic, horses, riders and equine conveyances. Our theme is safety education - our motto is Be Seen To Be Safe. The Ministry of Transport encourages us all to share the road. SVOA appreciates all efforts made by vehicle drivers on our roadways to pass our horses slow and wide. Through education, drivers and riders increase their understanding and respect for the unpredictable and timid nature of the horse. Examples of hazardous situations may be: blind corners, narrow roadways, vehicles with loud engines, heavy equipment or sudden congested situations in traffic. As riders we are committed to increase our visibility and use correct signals to communicate with motor vehicles. SVOA members have been busy making reflective safety gear for both horses and people which will be for sale at the event, along with prizes, raffles, free gifts and educational materials. Our concession booth will be open offering light refreshments and a five dollar lunch. Special activities are planned for children as well as lots of opportunities to meet our horses and our members. We will demonstrate equestrian road safety with a ride around Slocan Village from the riding grounds at 2 pm. For more information, please contact Pamela Stevenson at 250-226-7747. 6th Annual Children’s Market

Coming up on Saturday April 11, Brent Kennedy Elementary School’s PAC will be holding its sixth annual Children’s Market. The market is one of the PAC’s fundraisers, with all proceeds going to help subsidize the cost of swim lessons and other activities the school does throughout the year. The premise behind the market is to reduce waste, by bringing unwanted or outgrown family items to be reused and recycled by our fellow community members. People will bring baby and maternity items, clothes for all children as well as toys, books, outside toys, bikes, sports and camping equipment. There has even been a playground sold during the market. The market also welcomes local home businesses to the collection of 30 plus vendors to help these local businesses make a name for themselves. There is something for every member of your family! The market is open from 9 am to 1 pm at Brent Kennedy Elementary School. There will also be a concession and bake sale run by the PAC and students at the school. Admission is $2 for those over 12 years old and everyone 12 and under gets in free. West My Friend At The Langham, Kaslo Since West My Friend was conceived in a Victoria café in 2009, they’ve emerged as a unique voice in the city’s music scene. Described as everything from indie-roots to chamber-folk, their acoustic blend of instruments and four-part harmonies challenges the conventions of popular music to create a performance that is both engaging and innovative. Songs are created through a collaborative process: wellcrafted and clever lyrics, acrobatic mandolin riffs, flawless bass lines, and richly textured accordion combine as every member brings forward their own ideas and experiences. The wealth of musical experience and classical training in the group creates an interesting backdrop for their songwriting, allowing for levels of detail, intricacy, and counterpoint balanced with moments of simplicity. This sonically adventurous approach to music defines West My Friend as a key part of a growing movement of the new generation of grass-roots folk music taking place in Victoria, Vancouver and across British Columbia. The life of a musician is one of continual evolution, and West My Friend embodies this in their approach to music. They are a distinctive voice in the landscape between Canadian folk and indie-pop. Experience West My Friend on Saturday, April 11 at 7:30 pm at the Langham Theatre in Kaslo. Tickets are $15, available at Sunnyside Naturals and Willow Home Boutique. Submitted by Janet Pearson

Hospice Society Of North Kootenay Lake Invites You...

The Hospice Society of North Kootenay Lake (HSNKL) is a community based, independent, nonprofit society. Our mission is to offer compassionate care, free of charge, to the terminally ill, the dying and the bereaved. HSNKL’s work is made possible in great part by the generosity of local organizations and donations from individuals and businesses in the community. A dedicated group of trained volunteers carries out the work. HSNKL invites you to show your support for hospice services in the North Kootenay Lake area by attending the Society’s AGM on Saturday April 18, 2 to 4 pm at the Kaslo Seniors Hall. Attending the meeting and purchasing a 2015 membership are tangible ways to demonstrate your support (with no obligation to engage in hospice activities yourself). These measures of community support are of assistance to us when we grant applications to help with hospice work. The business meeting with election of officers and a speaker will be followed by refreshments, allowing time to talk and pick up information packages about end of life care and post-death practicalities. Hospice is offering a grief and loss support group in Kaslo for six weeks in May and June. Information will be available at the AGM or you can call Chelsea at Hospice, 250-353-2299 for more details. Transformations With Equine Assisted Learning

Volunteering at EAL for the past year has been amazing. The development in the teen group was something to see and something I will not forget. These teenagers are regular kids with regular teenage problems: peer pressure, body image and relationships to list some. Working with the horses, which have an amazing sixth sense, helps teenagers understand things such as appropriate boundaries; if the horse isn’t comfortable with you being so close they will make it clear or simply walk away. Learning when to step back or walk away from a situation is something many of us can benefit from. Being around such large, powerful animals teaches the teenagers confidence as well as giving them a chance to become aware of their own surroundings. Seeing the transformation in the mindfulness of the participants during the eight weeks period is wonderful and thought-provoking. All of the fun, simple, but at times challenging activities they do with the horses can make such a change in a person’s overall wellbeing. It not only encourages the participants to make themselves a better person, it makes me want to be better as a volunteer. Spring programs start April 13. The Doukhobor Connection To Peace

Selkirk College is cracking open the door to one of the most influential cultures in our region with a new Mir Centre for Peace Summer Institute offering starting at the end of April. An intensive five-day course, Peace 216: The Doukhobors, offers a study of the Doukhobors and their connection to issues of peace and conflict. Open to everyone, the course will explore the beginnings in Russia to the current realities. Doukhobor history and culture will be examined with attention to themes of peace, pacifism, violence and non-violence, community, and utopia. “I hope that people leave with a good sense of context that starts in Europe and carries forward into the Canadian context of nation-building and alternative communities within that process, says Selkirk College Instructor Takaia Larsen, who will be leading the summer institute class. “We want people to feel like they have had a genuine experience in being immersed in the Doukhobor culture of our region, both historical and contemporary.

The imprint the Doukhobor community has made on the West Kootenay-Boundary region is significant and the course is an opportunity to explore the depth of that impact. The design of the course will enable those with roots in the culture to learn alongside those curious to gain a better understanding. “Even people that grew up in the community feel they don’t have a full understanding of their family’s experiences in terms of the 19th Century context in Russia, says Larsen. “The course will trace all of that and it’s going to have a heavy focus on their experiences in the role of creating the modern world, creating an alternative life within the growth of nationalism and the modern state. Registration for the course closes on April 13. ATTENTION Non Profit Community Groups In Area E East Organizations located in Area E East are eligible to apply for funding for recreation programs, recreation services and building improvements for projects located in Area E East. Individuals wishing to access this grant program must do so under the sponsorship of an eligible community organization. The timing of these grants is meant to encourage summer and fall programming. The Recreation Commission #10 Strategic Plan priorities currently focus on recreation programs and services directed to pre-teens (ages 7-12) and seniors and to projects involving lake access and trail maintenance. Grants will generally be under $1,000 per project but larger projects will be considered on their merits. Two building improvement projects will be considered for the 2015 fiscal year. The grant can be up to $2,500 with the applicant providing matching funds. Applicants must have all local, provincial and federal permits required for their proposal. Any proposal for delivery of recreation services to children will require criminal records checks to be conducted on service providers. Applications will be accepted electronically up to May 1st, 2015 for programs or projects starting in 2015. Grants are subject to approval of the RDCK board. For grant applications please email kootenayrec10@gmail.com
