Redfish Celebrates The Kokanee Return Here they come again! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to celebrate the annual return of the Kokanee salmon at Kokanee Creek Park on Sunday, August 24. Get ready for channel spawning tours, dance, food and fun, along with a local art exhibit from 11 am to 6 pm at the Visitors Centre. This is the third annual RedFish Festival presented by the West Kootenay EcoSociety. Guided channel tours run hourly throughout the day, so residents and camper can

VILLAGE OF KASLO - PUBLIC NOTICE Notice is hereby given that under section 86 (Alternative Approval Process) of the Community Charter and section 20 of the Local Government Act, the Council of the Village of Kaslo intends to petition the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development requesting an extension of the area of the municipality to include the following described lands:

The subject properties are comprised of Kaslo aerodrome, aerodrome infrastructure including hangars and a potential light industrial park. The umbilical boundary represents the portion of the Kaslo West Road, currently maintained by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI), running from the existing municipal boundary to the subject municipally-owned properties/aerodrome lands. The purpose of this boundary extension is to establish zoning control and to derive municipal taxation from leaseholders to assist in paying for aerodrome and industrial park improvements. The Village has no intention of including adjacent privately or Crown-owned properties. And Further Take Notice That the municipality may proceed with the boundary extension request unless at least ten percent of municipal electors indicate that a referendum must be held by submitting a signed Elector Response Form to the Village Office no later than (usual closing time) 4:00 pm on Friday September 12, 2014. What began as an experiment is about to become a book. Humans of Nelson, a project that has been charming legions of followers through web and Facebook pages, will make the leap to the printed page this fall. A kickstarter campaign to get the ball rolling launches August 8. The project has come a long way since photographer Ryan Oakley took the first shot, on his lunch break from his job as an engineer with the Ministry of Transportation. “My heart was pounding,” says Oakley. “I was thinking: don’t do it! You’ll embarrass yourself! And then I thought: what have I got to lose?” The very first person said no. But the next one said yes, and Humans of Nelson was born. There are now 220+ captivating images of Nelson folk on the website, www.humansofnelsonbc.ca and the Facebook page (facebook.com/humansofnelsonbc) has been embraced with a whopping 5, 786 “likes”. Oakley was inspired by the Humans of New York project by photographer Brandon Stanton, which in turn has inspired spinoffs in major cities like Amsterdam and Paris. Nelson, thought Oakley, deserved to be in their company. Oakley looks for interesting, approachable-looking people to photograph and conducts friendly mini-interviews. The results are sometimes telling, often charming commentaries that complement images of people of all ages and from all walks of Nelson life, and even a few dogs. “A book just seemed the next logical step,” explains Oakley. “There is something about having a book in your hands. And when it’s a book about the people in your town—the interesting, the off-beat, and the regular folks—I think it’s an opportunity to celebrate what it is that makes Nelson...Nelson.” Oakley is launching a kickstarter campaign to fund the publishing project, a full colour hardcover photograph book designed by Nelson’s Steven Cretney of The Forest Design. Anne DeGrace, publisher of the photographic coffee table book Nelson, British Columbia, is assisting with the project.“It’s a great team,” says Oakley. “The book will be beautiful, and a dream come true.” Contributors to the campaign will receive a signed copy of the book, as well as other rewards based on the level of contribution. The goal is to raise $10,000 by August 23. $1 for every book sold through the campaign will benefit local charities. The book will launch this fall in a multimedia event at the Nelson Civic Theatre. Youth Crewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Long Hot Summer Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a summer job that would test most young people any time, but with this summerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seemingly unending heat wave, the Kaslo Community Forestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youth crew members are really finding out what they are made of. Most days itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an early 5 am start. Once on site they use pickaxes and pulaskis to grub out and widen recreational trails. Power tools (chainsaws and brush saws) are needed for some areas, especially on those days when the crew is doing forestry work â&#x20AC;&#x201C; brushing and fire-guarding for the community forest. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been on a hiking or biking trail this summer and noticed improvements, very likely you have this crew to thank. They cut their teeth on the Kaslo River Trailâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Letrari Loop. Now it is much more â&#x20AC;&#x153;flow-y for bikingâ&#x20AC;? according to avid mountain biker Karma Halleran. She especially appreciates the new Bridge over Troubled Mud, as she calls it. The crew has also made improvements to the Buchanan Access and No Brakes Trail, the Abbey Trail into upper Fletcher Lake, the Woodbury Creek road all the way to Silver Spray Cabin and, further to the north, several days were spent clearing the road to, and the campsites around Milford Lake.
