Lori Mitchell and Patrick Marsolek of Tango Missoula return to Nelson mid-January to offer their skills to local tanguera/os in the engaging and enchanting Argentine Tango. Combining years of dance training and experience, the pair will also share their wonderful warm-hearted enthusiasm for this dance. The workshops will foster the development of dynamic connections: to oneself, to each other, to the music and other dancers on the floor. Their instruction encourages an organic discovery of your natural way to move while it builds on the fundamental elements of the tango. Even advanced dancers will find content to satisfy them. Mitchel & Marsolek will offer six workshops at different levels over the weekend, increasing in complexity, as well as a Friday practica and Saturday night Milonga. A special bonus this year is a Follower’s footwork class. A potluck dinner is planned for both Friday and Sunday evenings TBA. There are also a limited number of private lesson spots available. Tis The Season, Quack Quack! The 115th North-America-wide Christmas Bird Count begins on Sunday, December 14 and runs through Monday, January 5, 2015. Since the year 1900, the CBC annual count period has run from December 14 to January 5. Everyone is invited to participate. So…let the counting begin! Prior to the turn of the century, people engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas “Side Hunt”: They would choose sides and go afield with their guns; whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginning stages around the turn of the 20th century, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank Chapman, an early officer in the then budding Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition, a Christmas Bird Census, that would count birds in the holidays rather than hunt them. So began the Christmas Bird Count. Thanks to the inspiration of Frank Chapman and the enthusiasm of twenty-seven dedicated birders, twenty-five Christmas Bird Counts were held that day. The locations ranged from Toronto, Ontario to Pacific Grove, California with most counts in or near the population centers of northeastern North America. Those original 27 Christmas Bird Counters tallied around 90 species on all the counts combined. (from Audubon Society, 2015). Several counts are planned in 2015 around the Kootenay area, including: Kaslo (December 30), Lardeau (December 27), Harrop Balfour (December 20), Slocan Lake

(December 27), and Nelson (January 3). You can participate as a field counter or as a feeder counter on the count date. The CBC bird census takes place on a single day within a designated 24km diameter count circle, thus avoiding overlap and duplication of species numbers and identities. CBC’s are for both experienced and inexperienced bird watchers. Field activities are a mix of both so you can sharpen your bird watching skills. For all ages, its a fun, relaxed atmosphere, sharing folk’s interest and enthusiasm about our local winter birds. Wayne Anderson 1937 - 2014 Wayne Oscar Anderson of Fort Macleod, beloved husband of Mary Jean Anderson, passed away after a lengthy illness on December 9, 2014 at the age of 77 years. Besides his wife Jean Anderson, Wayne is survived by his two daughters Kimberley Leslie (Allan) of Victoria, BC, and Shannon Anderson of Calgary, AB; two sons Darren Anderson (Nancy Marchinko) and Pat Anderson (Sheri) of Calgary, AB; five grandchildren Alex Anderson, Blake Anderson, Colby Anderson, Scott Leslie and Chelsea Leslie. Wayne is also survived by one sister Donna (Doug) Bannick of Cranbrook, BC, and one brother John (Joan) Anderson of Lethbridge, AB, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Wayne was predeceased by his parents Oscar and Babsy Anderson. Wayne was born in Carmangay, Alberta on June 21, 1937. He attended school in Nobleford, Alberta; as an air cadet in Royal Roads Military College in Victoria; and apprenticed as an electronics technician at SAIT in Calgary, Alberta. He worked for AGT for 32 years. In 1961 Wayne married his best friend Jean in Fort Macleod; they were married for 53 years. In 1993 they retired to Kootenay Lake, BC and built their second home. Wayne enjoyed fishing, golfing and socializing. He excelled at woodworking, woodcarving and mechanics. Wayne will be remembered for his sense of humour and willingness to help his neighbours and friends. Wayne and Jean moved to Fort Macleod in September 2014. Local Hospice Society Offers Support At Christmas The Christmas holidays are an important time for family and friends to gather and celebrate, remember the past, and build new memories to carry forward into the future. There can be much joy with happy recollections but also, as many people have experienced, there can also be disappointment about having not reached the ideal image of Christmas cheer one year or perhaps ever. The holidays may be bittersweet with memories of those who are no longer with us. When we have had a profound loss in the past few years, Christmas can be a time of great sadness. Poppy Campaign A Success The 2014 Poppy Campaign in the Kaslo area raised $3,194. The collection at the Remembrance Day Service totalled $805 which went to our Food Pantry. Since 1926, the Legion has been the leading organization delivering programs to our veterans and our communities nationwide. In 2014 the Kaslo Legion awarded $800 in bursaries to JVH grads as well as issued $300 to winners of the Remembrance Day Poster contest. Our Food Pantry distributed 180 hampers to those in need as well as 30 Christmas hampers. We donated $5,075 to various community organizations. We supported veterans with $2,351 in assistance. The Ladies Auxiliary, which is the longest running not-for-profit organization in Kaslo, also gave out $900 in bursaries and $1650 in charitable donations. You don’t have to be a Veteran to join the Legion! To become a member, you must be 18 years of age or older and be a citizen of Canada, or a Commonwealth or NATO/ Wartime Allied Country. In Memoriam EDWARD ‘LEE” COUSINS. 19402014 Lee passed away in the Victorian Community Health Center in Kaslo, BC on Dec. 7, 2014 where he had been a resident for the past 10 years. Lee was born in Smeaton, Sask on June 23, 1940. He grew up in Kaslo and Ft St John, BC. For most of his life he worked as a welder in the oil fields. Both of his parents pre-deceased him, Amos Cousins in 1955 and Reta Leyden in 2004. He is survived by his sister, Jeanette McNamara (Kelowna, BC) & brother, Roger Cousins (Oyama, BC), daughters Angie Cousins (Grande Prairie, AB) & Jodi Cousins (Prince George, BC) 6 grandchildren and one great-grandchild along with many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all. Memorial to be held at a later date.

The Guiding Hands Recreation Society in Crawford Bay is the recipient of a $10,000 donation from BC Hydro after being named a 2014 Community Champion. All funds will support the Society’s Tipi Camp Wilderness Immersion for Self Esteem (WISE) programs. These week-long sessions provide a unique opportunity for young people to connect with the natural world, engage with their peers, and develop their sense of personal responsibility in the process. Located at a remote site that is only accessible by boat or hiking, Tipi Camp has been operating in the West Kootenays since 1988. Campers are immersed in sustainable living practices as they eat communal vegetarian meals, sleep in tipis, and take part in nightly discussions with ecologists and First Nations elders. The camp uses gravity-fed water and solar panels to power their composting toilets and therefore leaves a minimal ecological footprint but makes an enduring impression on the campers who visit during the summer. The $10,000 award will directly enhance several aspects of Tipi Camp’s WISE Programs. It will supplement a bursary that allows children from lower income families to attend camp, and improve the camp’s energy efficiency through the purchase of new solar panels to power their fridges and LED lights. More resources will also now be available to help the camp’s teen participants gain leadership skills and experience so they can help facilitate the younger children’s camps. BC Hydro’s Community Champions program recognizes local non-profit organizations that demonstrate leadership through their commitment to sustainability, conservation and the environment. Through an online public voting process, the top five most popular video submissions from a list of 12 finalists were awarded $10,000 each to support their community initiative. Warning! Another Phone Scam Nelson RCMPolice have received to date two separate calls regarding monies that were sent as a result of late night phone calls from a male caller claiming to be a nephew who was in trouble. The nephew had either been involved in a crash involving an out-of-province plated rental vehicle and needed cash to pay for the damages through a lawyer out-of-province or was in the hospital needing cash for medical expenses. In both cases monies were sent out of concern for the well-being of the nephew to what seemed to be legitimate lawyers or doctors via a MoneyGram. Police are urging anyone who receives a call like this to follow up immediately with family members involved to confirm whether it is a real incident or not. This type of scam relies on suspect access to social media sites who then use those family connections to then make the calls targeting the family memberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emotions to send the money. The calls usually come in as â&#x20AC;&#x153;privateâ&#x20AC;? numbers and they never leave a number they can be reached and/or use a false name which makes it near impossible to investigate.
