Holiday Hamper Campaign Once again the Nelson Food Cupboard is preparing Holiday Hampers for 500 people in need of a little extra help to make the holiday season healthy and cheerful. The Nelson Food Cupboardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission is to provide access to healthy food for people who cannot afford to purchase enough food for themselves and their families, and to do it in a dignified way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ask people why they are in a position to need to use our Food Cupboard or pick up a hamper at Christmastime; we trust they can make that decision for themselves,â&#x20AC;? adds Skrypiczajko. Everyone the Nelson Food Cupboard serves lives in poverty but their circumstances vary widely. Some are on seniorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pensions or long-term disability pensions for physical or mental health reasons, some work but cannot make ends meet, some are single parents with small children, and the list goes on. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our recent customer survey indicated that 75% of our customers have lived in Nelson five years or more, and 60% for ten years or more. One timeless holiday tradition is still going strong for children all over the world. Already, Santa’s post office is reporting letters are pouring in – with the first one received in July, reminding Santa to eat well and exercise in anticipation of a very busy holiday season. Santa’s Chief Postal Elf, Holly T. Elf, is reporting that already some 10,000 letters have come in, keeping postal elves busy. An increase of about 10% in letters is expected this year, meaning that Santa’s post office could answer over 1.5 million letters this season in more than 30 languages, including Braille. Santa and his 6,000 postal elves will ensure that each and every letter will get a response in time for Christmas. “I encourage all the girls and boys to send their letters to Santa soon,” says Holly, who started working at the North Pole post office more than 30 years ago. “And don’t forget to include your return address. While Santa knows where your house is, the postal elf team needs your address to ensure your letter will be delivered on time.” All letters to Santa should be mailed before December 16 to give Santa enough time to send a letter back. Kaslo Christmas Hampers The Kaslo Food Hub is now taking donations for our community food cupboard, as well as this seasons’ Christmas Hampers. The North Kootenay Lake Food Cupboard is a non-barrier program that provides wholesome, free food to anyone in our community who finds themselves in need. The Christmas Hampers are coordinated and provided by the North Kootenay Lake Food Cupboard with support from the Nelson Salvation Army, RDCK, Lakeside Learning Centre and local businesses and individuals. Items we are accepting are food (unopened and not expired, both perishable and non-perishable items), new toys for the Christmas Hampers and of course, cash that we will use to purchase food for the food cupboard and to supplement the Christmas Hampers. All On A Winter’s Night The Langham Galleries will be celebrating the winter season with a community exhibition, opening Friday December 5 at 7 pm, of original handmade Christmas art cards, small handmade artist books, and original prose and poetry, all on a winter theme. Fall Is Bat Eviction Time Summer is the season when property owners notice bats in their buildings. They may find guano on the deck, hear bats in the walls, or smell a build-up of guano. The Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP), funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund, has received hundreds of calls over the years with these issues. In many cases, landowners are happy to leave bats where they are. However, for landowners who would like to have bats move out of their buildings, now is the time to do something about it. “With the decline of natural roost structures in the wild, such as large trees or undisturbed rock crevices, some bat species have adapted to use buildings for their roost sites” says Juliet Craig, Coordinating Biologist for the KCBP. “Groups of related females can form large colonies called maternity roosts where they get together to have their one pup. These colonies may use attics, walls, chimneys, siding, barns, sheds and other structures.” Under the BC Wildlife Act it is illegal to exterminate or harm bats. In order to “get rid of bats”, the best strategy is to wait until they have left the building and seal up all the entry and exit points. However, in summer months, bat pups can become trapped inside. In general, bats in the Kootenays leave buildings in the late summer or early fall. They use fall roost sites where they mate and then go into mines or caves to hibernate. Although there is a possibility that bats can use buildings over the winter, it is unusual. “There are several approaches to managing bats in build-

ings” continues Craig. Some landowners don’t mind having bats and simply leave them be or clean up the guano once a year. Others want to ensure that the bats are no longer using the building. In those cases, this is the time of year to check that bats are no longer inside the roost and then work on sealing up all entry and exit points.” One of the most important strategies in excluding bats from a building is to install a bat-house nearby. These wooden boxes comprised of various chambers provide the bats with an alternative habitat. They are less likely to be persistent in entering their old roost site in a building if they have somewhere else to roost. Every year the Whole School students pick one or two issues to raise money for and support for their yearly Generosity Project. This year the project involves a special family that has joined the Whole School â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Colberts. Jack, their 20 month old son, struggles with multiple health problems after being born with Down Syndrome. Medical costs have piled up for the family and the students decided they wanted to help. The students are planning a hot chocolate, baked goods and art sale to raise funds to support Jackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family with his travel and medical expenses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The children at the school have taken this family into their hearts and decided to support Jack and his family in his journey towards health,â&#x20AC;? says Anniah Lang, Principal at the Whole School. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They felt it was integral to have a personal connection and a local context for their support.â&#x20AC;? Last year the Whole School students raised funds and collected food for donation to the Slocan Valley Food Cupboard. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sale will take place at the Winlaw Park & Ride during school hours on Thursday, December 4 at 1:30. Please join us in supporting the Colberts.
