Moms Go Virtual For Healthy Babies

For the first time in BC expectant mothers can participate in virtual visits with their maternity care provider directly from their local family doctor’s office, thanks to new tele-maternity (video conferencing) technology developed as a part of a Shared Care/Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice pilot project. The project is funded in partnership by Doctors of BC and the Ministry of Health. Women in rural areas have unique challenges to accessing care pre and post pregnancy. Geography, weather, and costs of travel can all create significant barriers to receiving timely maternity care. As a solution to the problem, doctors from the Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice FREE

and maternity care providers have teamed up to offer tele-maternity through local doctors’ offices in the region. Accessing the service is easy. Women wishing to use the service make their appointment with their regular family doctor and their maternity care provider at the same time. When the woman arrives at her local doctor’s office, she has a physical exam with her family doctor and then meets virtually with her maternity care provider to discuss results and other care planning. “This is a new way of applying technology that has become familiar to anyone who chats online,” explains Mona Mattei, project manager for the tele-maternity pilot. Mattei says they have tele-maternity sites at doctors’ offices ready to participate in Midway, Christina Lake, Grand Forks, New Denver and Salmo, and more locations are in the works. If you are interested in using tele-maternity, contact your family doctor and ask them to join the service. Or contact Mona Mattei, mmattei@divisionsbc.ca 250-443-1899 and pass on your doctor’s name for follow up.

Land Linking Matches Farmers And Landowners

Kootenay demand for local food is on the rise. A recent Rural Development Institute poll found that Basin residents not only want a local diet, but 69% are also prepared to pay a premium for local foods. With our region’s farmers among the oldest in the country, the market seems to be calling out for more young farmers to help meet demand. The catch is that aspiring young farmers face a wide range of barriers to getting established from a lack of good training options to the high cost of farmland. In a blog post published this week, former NelsonCreston MLA and longtime organic farmer, Corky Evans, makes a compelling plea on behalf of young and aspiring Kootenay farmers. “The land I live on in Winlaw cost $10,000 in 1972. It is now appraised at $400,000... or 40 times as much as I paid,” writes the one-time Minister of Agriculture and Food. “In 1972 an unskilled labourer in the Kootenays (as I was then) made approximately $600 a month. In order for a young person today to have a proportionally equal chance to acquire and pay off the same piece of land, they would have to earn 40 times $600, or $24,000 a month.” Evans’ article is part of an effort to promote a provincewide series of Land Linking events. Young Agrarians, a BC based young farmer network, is hosting the events to build networks of support around transitioning the province’s farmland to the next generation. Young Agrarians work involves advocacy for innovations like regional farmland trusts and practical, short-term strategies like match-making land-seekers and land-owners.

Land Linking events combine a practical workshop on the ins and outs of alternative land access arrangements (options like leasing and licensing land) with a potluck social. “Our main hope is to create opportunities for people with land and people looking for land to connect with each other,” says Kootenay Young Agrarians Coordinator and Creston Valley farmer, Laura Hannant. “By hosting the workshops and sharing resources, like our BC Land Access Guide, we also hope to connect people with the kind of information that can help make a land match work well and last over time.” These Kootenay Land Linking workshops will be held from 1 - 6 pm in Winlaw on Thursday, February 12 and in Invermere on Saturday, February 14. Workshops will be followed by potluck socials open to all. A more informal gathering will be held in Creston on Saturday, February 21. All events are free or by donation. For more information and to register, visit youngagrarians.org/ growing-kootenay- farmers-february-2015-events/ or call 1-888-730-0452 ext. 301. Tootsie

This very sweet young spayed female tuxedo came to us very pregnant. She had her litter of kittens, who have all been adopted, was a great mom, and now is looking forward to her own forever home. She is living in a foster home with other cats, but would really love to be an only kitty in a quiet home where she can be an inside cat. She will follow her person around like a puppy, loving the pets and attention (although she does not love being picked up and held for long.) She is an easy keeper. Local Kootenay guitarists, Bill Lynch and Jon Burden, have been playing together as a duo for the past number of years. They have played with legendary Texas Blues men such as Sonny Rhodes and Country Pete McGill. Bill Lynch is a Kaslo local and the founder of Nelson’s favorite blues party band, Lazy Poker Blues Band, who have been entertaining Kootenay audiences for decades. Lynch plays guitar in a unique style - lightning fast licks using only his thumb - and is proficient on both six string and 12 string acoustic slide guitars. He is also an accomplished songwriter and composes songs that incorporate Latin and Turkish melodies combined with insightful, poetic lyrics. Jon Burden, Slocan Valley resident, has played in a number of regional bands over the years. Burden lived in Calgary in the early 1980’s where he backed up Canadian music legends such as Kelly Jay of Crowbar and Grammy award winning Texas blues man, Donald Ray Johnson. Locally, he is best known for his work as one half of the acoustic blues duo, Holly and Jon. Jon plays solid rhythm to Bill’s fiery lead lines and plays and sings in a low down, soulful, blues style. Burden has a rich musical vocabulary and writes beautiful songs. His songs draw on a deep musical reservoir of experience and feeling. Together, Lynch and Burden blues and roots music has been described as Fret Board Rippin’ Acoustic Blues. Their sound is also very contemporary folk oriented, with a slight Latin and middle-eastern flavor to it. A Vancouver blues man referred to their music as Matador Blues and that is as good a description as any. The Langham Theatre in Kaslo will open its doors on Saturday, February 21 at 7 pm, show begins at 7:30 pm. Advance tickets $10 available at Sunnyside Naturals and Willow Home Boutique, Front Street, Kaslo and $12 at the door. Submitted by Maggie Tchir

Supporting The Bereaved

For those who have lost someone through death, the cycle of loss through detachment, despair and anger to recovery can be a lonely, frightening and overwhelming experience, even when family and friends are trying to support us. A grief support group provides a safe, supportive environment where the bereaved can learn that the way they are experiencing their grief is normal and very individual. Grief is a healthy response to loss that needs to be acknowledged and expressed before we can move on. Working through feelings about losses and sharing them with others who are also grieving decreases our isolation and loneliness while helping us learn how to experience and work through our pain. Nelson & District Hospice Society is offering a free Grief Support Series for anyone grieving the loss of someone through death. The group will run for four weeks starting Thursday, February 12 until March 5 from 6 – 8 pm. Pre-registration is required but attendance is free. For more information and/or to register, please call Nelson Hospice at 250-352-2337 or email info@nelsonhospice.org All calls are confidential. Donations gratefully accepted. Join us at the Langham Theatre in Kaslo for the fourth film in our FLIKS film series on Friday, February 13, 7:30 pm. Tickets at door, $10. A Swedish family travels to the French Alps to enjoy a few days of skiing. The sun is shining and the slopes are spectacular but, during a lunch at a mountainside restaurant, an avalanche turns everything upside down. With diners fleeing in all directions, mother Ebba calls for her husband Tomas as she tries to protect their children. Tomas, meanwhile, is running for his life... The anticipated disaster failed to occur, and yet the family’s world has been shaken to its core, a question mark hanging over their father in particular. Tomas and Ebba’s marriage now hangs in the balance as Tomas struggles desperately to reclaim his role as family patriarch. This film was Sweden’s entry for the 2015 Academy Awards Best Foreign Film. This is the film which we originally scheduled for December 12 and had to cancel at the last minute do to a DVD malfunction. If you came to the Langham that night, we appreciate your patience and hope to see you next week. If this film is new to you, we encourage you to come and check it out! Submitted by David Jackson

Savouring Nature With A Camera Submitted by Maggie Tchir Spring is coming! On Tuesday, March 3 at 7 pm The Kaslo Area Birders invite Alistair Fraser, local retiree, photographer, and naturalist, to explore nature with his camera. He invites you into his world with an evening of Local Nature Tasting at the Langham Theatre, Kaslo. This is a naturalist’s version of an evening of wine tasting, whereby sipping is replaced by observing. During a wine tasting, a theme is chosen and participants are invited to make new distinctions among subtly PAGE 36

different varieties. Alistair Fraser’s tastes run to observing local nature through a camera lens, so he has chosen themes from among his own photographs. Some themes feature colourful bears, dancing devils, perplexing bows and, ta-da, local ogopogoes. Within each theme, assorted images encourage savoury distinctions; following each theme, a palate cleanser clears the way for the next. Tickets $5 at Sunnyside Naturals and Willow Home Boutique, Kaslo and at the door. See you there!

Will You Be My Green Valentine?

Have roses, boxed sweets and fancy dinners not been doing much for your latest attempts to woo your love? With glaring reminders of cupid’s day at every retailer in sight, it is easy to lose sight of Valentine’s true meaning and buy your way through whole ordeal. But if you (or your loved one) beg to differ from the usual fare, try adding some creativity to your celebrations. Here are three non-clichéd ideas to celebrate your Valentine’s Day: For The Love Of Birds: If you prefer counting real birds over dining next to pairs of doe-eyed lovebirds, there is an international bird count just in time for Valentine’s Day weekend. The 18th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is a joint project by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society in partnership with Bird Studies Canada. From February 13 to 16, count the birds you spot for at least 15 minutes a day on one or more days and enter your sightings at BirdCount.org. The collective data helps scientists create snapshots of bird populations worldwide. Last year, a total of 4,296 species were sighted with a total of 12,748,756 individual birds counted worldwide! Spread the love to your feathery friends by making a pinecone bird feeder at home and to bring on your nature walks! Escape To A Nature Preserve: Whether you delight in the cover of ancient woods or the embrace of open prairies, there are many places to visit for all ages and activity levels, with some surprisingly not far from urban centres. Be it a day trip or a brisk walk, a return to nature helps you unwind from a buildup of stress. Many parks offer equipment rental and guided tours for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing this time of year. Some itineraries may even involve a nose-to-beak encounter with the sociable chickadee. Not sure where to go? Conservation organizations like the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) offer many publicly accessible reserves to satisfy your winter wanderlust. Be sure to pack a thermos of hot cocoa to share! A Winter-Spring Affair In Tandem: For the stay-athome couple, how about getting your hands dirty in a twopart bombshell affair – seed bomb making that is. A seed bomb is essentially a nugget of soil and seed mix, strategically tossed to re-wild parts of the city. Once thrown, the bombs help encourage the spread of natives species. With cheap and easy-to-find ingredients, you can easily make a batch in winter and bomb away come spring.

To make your own Valentine’s Day-inspired seed bomb, simply form the balls with a heart-shaped ice cube or cupcake tray, et voila, you have eco-Valentine’s Day gifts that everyone will love. The best part: watching the seeds of your labour bloom in the unlikeliest of places and help bring back wildlife that relies on native species like from bees to birds! Tips On How To Be Nature’s Valentine: When spending time in nature, remember the age-old adage: leave only footprints and take only memories (or pictures). Capture nature’s sweet scene only through the lens of your camera and consider making an e-card to share! Keep those heart etchings to your notebook; a tree will thank you for one less wound and scar. You can also remember your loved ones by giving a gift in your name to organizations that help protect the environment in perpetuity. CommunityWire, Newspaper Canada

YOU TOLD US! Thanks so very much for publishing my “What is Lymphedema?” article in the latest addition. I have received so many texts & calls with such positive feedback already. I can’t believe how many people read the Pennywise from front to back!!!

At Pennywise, we love to hear how we’re doing from you, our readers and advertisers. Happily we DO hear from you, and here are some samples of what YOU TOLD US...

Julie Aitken

I would like to thank you for the amount of space you dedicate to editorials in your fine publication. As one who works in and around non-profit organizations, we truly appreciate your support! Cheers, Brent Bukowski

THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP. Oh, and just in case you guys like feedback, at least 9 out of 10 inquiries about our house have been from people who saw our ad in the Pennywise. We have it advertised in a lot of places online as well, but none of the other ads seem to bring any interest. Cheers, Crystal Langford PAGE 42

Feb. 10, 2015

Hi Sheila... Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. And, for your very clear explanation for how your delivery of the paper works.... I really appreciate that. I, like you, would certainly NOT consider your paper “junk” whatsoever...and, if so, it’s the BEST one out there, that’s for sure...if only ALL “junk mail” was as good as yours. Thank you again and thanks for understanding. All the best as you continue providing the great paper you do. Scott

HI THERE, after just one day on the website, our house rented. Thank you, you can stop the ad from further editions. Larry Poznikoff Pennywise

Just wanted to thank you for always being so understanding, positive and accommodating. So nice to get to work with you. Please also pass on my appreciation to all others who have to put up with me. Such a great bunch! M.B, Kaslo.

Just wanted to send out a thank you for helping us make the first bout of 2014 a huge success. The Kootenay Kannibelles - West Kootenay Roller Derby’s Allstars brought home a victory for us! I had people tell me they saw our ad in the Pennywise and that was why they came and boy were they happy they did. So again thank you so much! Amber Harper, Marketing and Media Director for West Kootenay Roller Derby

I think we are good now. Picked up a few new (Snow Removea) clients who said they got our info from the (Pennywise) ad and we are now maxed in subscriptions for the season. Thanks for the awesome service! Without you we couldn’t have afforded to run ads to expand the business. The rates are reasonable and the service awesome. Cheers, Nadine

The Lower Columbia Region Is Thriving!

The most recent economic statistic in a series of published metrics highlighting our thriving economy is total capital investment in regional health facilities. Over $2.7 Million dollars have been invested in the Lower Columbia region health care facilities over the past 2013/2014 fiscal year! Some key investments the Interior Health Association (IHA) has contributed to in the past two years include new digital diagnostic mammography equipment, a new fluoroscopy multipurpose machine that allows for improved real-time (fluoroscopy) and regular x-rays as well as a new security system for Columbia View Lodge. Since 2002, the IHA has invested a staggering $38M in capital investments in the Lower Columbia region, recognizing the importance of maintaining equipment and facilities and providing our residents access to state of the art technology. The IHA continues to invest in the future of health care in our region with another $1.5 million in planned investments for the next fiscal year at KBRH; including electrical upgrades, updated monitoring equipment for surgical patients and a new ultrasound machine. Terry Van Horn, Economic Development Coordinator for the LCIC commented, “Capital investment in our region is an essential tool to maintain and grow our healthcare system, to realize efficiencies and improve quality, and to meet the needs of the Lower Columbia residents.â€? Climate Change Debate

Award winning Canadian author and social activist Naomi Klein is coming to the West Kootenay in April to speak about her new book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate, a powerful analysis of the casual relationship between capitalism and climate change. The Selkirk College Mir Centre for Peace Lecture Series event will take place at the Brilliant Cultural Centre in Castlegar on April 11. Tickets are now on sale. PAGE 54

“We’re thrilled to have Naomi as part of this year’s series of speakers,” says lecture series coordinator Cara-Lee Malange. “Her work as journalist, author and activist is well known across Canada and the world. We feel her talk will really resonate with people in our region and stimulate wide-scale discussion and action with the climate change debate.” Released in 2014, Klein’s latest offering is a New York Times non-fiction bestseller and winner of the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction. In This Changes Everything, Klein exposes the myths that are clouding the climate debate by offering a compelling critique that an unregulated global market system is directly responsible for warming the planet to levels that threaten our existence and that time is running out. “Forget everything you think you know about global warming,” states Klein’s website. “The really inconvenient truth is that it’s not about carbon — it’s about capitalism. The convenient truth is that we can seize this existential crisis to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better.” Klein further argues in This Changes Everything that climate change could become a catalyzing force for positive change as it possibly one of the best arguments “progressives have ever had to demand the rebuilding and reviving of local economies.” “This is will be a wonderful opportunity for people to listen to a world renowned author/activist who is successfully stimulating discussion about climate change and who ultimately offers an optimistic message in the face of crisis,” says Malange. “We expect a full house in April and are looking forward to the impression she will leave on our communities.” Submitted by Bob Hall

Kaslo & Area HEALTH MATTERS

What’s happening in Kaslo to help you stop smoking?

Tobacco counselling is one of the many services offered at Kaslo Primary Health Care Centre. Many clients use this service and we are happy to report that we have had many success stories. Some people who have smoked for 50+ years have managed to overcome their addiction to tobacco. There are many methods/approaches to helping clients overcome this addiction and it may take many attempts to quit before the person is successful. It takes a desire to quit and the commitment to make it happen. We are here to support you along your journey to be smoke free. We will find the best treatment plan for you, whether it is using nicotine replacement therapy or with prescription medication such as Champix or Zyban. The clinic has a carbon monoxide (CO) breathalyzer. CO is an odourless gas, a silent killer and is inhaled with every puff of smoke. Even in small amounts, CO is known to wreck artery walls, make the blood sticky (causing unwanted clots inside the body), depress the immune system, and kill off good cholesterol. The level of carbon monoxide in the body varies according to the time of day, number of tobacco products smoked, and how deep the smoke is inhaled. CO begins to leave the body 2 days after stopping smoking. Please call 250-353-2291 and book an appointment with Georgie to help you be tobacco free.

The Sex Talk

Yes, it’s what many parents dread and what most kids try to avoid. It is that uncomfortable time when a parent, or guardian sits down to discuss matters of “the birds and the bees” with their child. Although I may have just aged myself with that term, nevertheless I am talking about sex. Yes, S-E-X! There is much stigma associated with this simple, three-letter word. If you haven’t been scared away yet and are still reading, great! The mere thought of having ‘the talk’ is enough to make any parent and/or child shudder. I personally stuffed my own ears with cotton without my mom’s knowing, in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid the pain and humiliation of hearing what I imagined would scar me for life. However, children and youth living in our current culture are being influenced at much earlier ages than ever before. These influences come in various shapes and forms and can include television, music, social media, internet, advertising, and much, much, more. Thus, what all parents must know is that all kids are, or are going to be influenced by one or more of these sources as long as they exist. And let us not forget the stuff that is learned from their friends and peers. To provide you with some overall statistics, according to various Canadian studies, teenage pregnancy has decreased over the years but the incidence of sexually transmitted infections

is still significantly high. So…since it is not feasible to confine our kids until the age of 25, or hire a detective to track their every move, what is a parent to do? We are fortunate enough in our community to have a local, Options for Sexual Health clinic, and a school district supportive of providing sexual health teaching, but schools should not be the only place where children and adolescents receive the information. Throughout my work and research, I have heard from multiple sources that parental involvement is very important in the planning, implementing, and follow-up stages of teaching sexual health. Push past any feelings of discomfort (not presuming everyone has these feelings), and play a key role in your child’s learning. This can be done by asking questions and maintaining an open line of communication. Don’t let “The Sex Talk” only happen once, and if you’ve already had it with your child, bring it up again, and again. They may hate you for it at first, but it will likely not be the last time they think their parents are embarrassing them or being “un-cool.” Kaslo’s Options for Sexual Health Clinic is open every 2nd and 4th Monday at the Primary Health Centre from 6-8pm. (closed on holidays) Kayla Settle RN, BScN, Public Health Nursing 250-353-2291 Option 2.
