Get Your Dancing Shoes On!
The second annual Blues, Brews, and BBQ is on! The event is a fundraiser for the West Kootenay EcoSociety and will take place on Saturday, February 28 at the Eagles Hall (641 Baker St.) in Nelson. There will be three great bands providing the blues component of this fantastic show. Kicking the night off at 7 pm will be the blues power trio Jonnie B and the Bleedin’ Hearts led by local blues guitar legend Jon Burde. The dynamic rhythm section of Steve Wilson on drums and Rob Van der Laan on bass are the Bleedin’ Hearts. Jonnie B and The Bleedin’ Hearts pays tribute to the electric blues of post-war America while carefully bringing the genre into the present time, with smokin’ versions of blues/rock classics by Eric Clapton, ZZ Top and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Taking the stage next, direct from Spokane, will be the headliner for the night, three times Best Blues Band award winner by the Inland Empire Blues Society, Big Mumbo Blues Band. Not only has this six piece band won many awards but so have its members, with guitarist/vocalist Pat Barclay voted best blues guitarist and vocalist 2010; saxophonist Chuck Swanson voted best instrumentalist 2010; and vocalist Jennifer Kemple voted best female blues vocalist and best female performer 2010. Filling out Big Mumbo’s rock solid groovy rhythm section are Danny McCollim on organ and piano, Rick Smith on bass, and Mike Tschirgi on drums and vocals. Finishing off the night will be the Clinton Swanson Rhythm and Blues Review featuring two of Nelson’s most soulful singers, Aryn Sheriff and Fraser Black. In the band will be Mark Spielman on bass, Marvin Walker on drums, Doug Stephenson on guitar, Tom Thomson on keys, Ron Butler on trumpet, and Clinton Swanson on saxophone. If you’re going to have a great night of music, you’ve got to have lots of great food and drinks and there will be no shortage of those at this event. This year’s cuisine will be served up by cook/caterer extraordinaire Annie Bailey. cont’d on pg 21 CANADA POST CONSIDERS THE PENNYWISE AS A ‘FLYER’. Cougars In Kaslo
There have been multiple cougar sightings in our area this winter. Deer are the cougar’s primary food source, and in the winter season deer and other prey animals are using low elevation habitats. Cougars will follow their prey into these areas, which often overlap with our communities and agricultural lands. In North America, roughly 25 fatalities and 95 non-fatal cougar attacks have been reported during the past 100 years. However, more cougar attacks have been reported in the western United States and Canada over the past 20 years than in the previous 80 (though this may be because there are more people on the landscape than in previous decades). Conflicts with cougars are rare, but it’s a good idea to know how to avoid encounters and what to do if you do see a cougar. The most important thing if you see a cougar

is to NEVER RUN. The cat may then see you as prey and give chase. Speak in a loud and firm voice to reinforce that you are not an easy target, and be prepared to fight back in the very unlikely event that the cougar attacks. Managing food attractants is also necessary, much in the same way as for bears. Garbage, fruit, and pet food attract small mammals that can then attract cougars to approach homes, and cougars are known to eat pet food that is accessible (look at the picture of the pretty kitty on your cat food bag!). Keeping a clean yard helps to keep wildlife away. Also keep your pets close to you and inside at night as they could provide a food source for a hungry cougar or coyote. It’s also important to keep chickens locked up at night to protect them from cougars, coyotes, or bobcats which are also pushed into low elevation habitats in winter. Kaslo WildSafeBC educates on wildlife/human coexistence to keep wildlife wild and communities safe. Go to www.WildSafeBC.com for more info. Wildlife or safety concerns should be reported to the Conservation Officer Service at: 1-877-952-7277.

Jean Mary Stiven In the early hours of a winter morning, February 3, 2015, Jean Stiven (Mom, Granny, Great Granny, Jean, ‘the Honourable Niz’), followed a path only she could see and left us here to continue our stories. Would that ours be as interesting as hers… Born in London, England in 1926, to Alec and Dorothy Nisbet (née Lupton), Jean grew up in Oxford with her brother, Angus. She was a quiet, studious child with a yen for adventure; an avid reader, she did well at school. She went on to receive a Masters Degree (Chemistry) from Oxford University (1947) and worked for a year as a research chemist. She enjoyed hiking, bicycling, Scottish country dancing and theatre. While at university Jean met and married David Stiven, a Forestry student from Scotland. Jean was embraced by the large, boisterous Stiven clan. In 1951, after the birth of their first child, Jean and David immigrated to Canada. David’s work led them to Auden, Sioux Lookout, Shoal Lake and Arden before they decided to go overseas to work for the United Church of Canada. By this time three more children had arrived, David had taken three years of theological training in Winnipeg and had been ordained as a minister. Throughout, Jean had maintained the household in often challenging conditions. In her new role as minister’s wife, Jean accompanied the family on a circuitous route through Wisconsin, USA, by sea to Portugal and on to spend five interesting years in Ndola, Zambia (1961-1966) … all this with four children in tow. Their fifth child was born in Ndola. The family returned to Winnipeg for a year before spending two years in Kingston, Jamaica. There Jean taught at the local high school while the household expanded to include two Jamaican students, Pauline and Joan. Joan returned to Canada with the family and was officially adopted in 1972. After Jamaica, the family spent another year in Winnipeg, where Jean took a job in a research laboratory at the University of Manitoba – a brief opportunity to apply her formal education. In 1970 the family moved to Victoria, British Columbia, where, in addition to her family and church (Gordon United) roles, Jean became a Medical Office Assistant, a job she excelled at and thoroughly enjoyed. The early-mid 1980s were dark years for Jean, with the death of two daughters, and a divorce from David. Jean retired in 1987 after meeting the second love of her life, Gordon Davidson, an electrical engineer and inventor, who respected her vast knowledge and experience, and adored her. Together they enjoyed many travels. In 2013, after Gordon’s death, Jean moved to Kaslo to live with her daughter, Fiona. Although she could no longer write, she loved reading, being outside, and watching the birds and passers-by; she loved flowers, marzipan bars, and ice cream; and she loved the visits she had from family and friends. Her most remarkable gift to the family was her love of words: reading, letter-writing, storytelling, crosswords… She held the extended family together with her words – almost without exception they were quiet, thoughtful words. Someone with this love of words would, of course, have had a motto. Hers was Life is a Rich and Rewarding Adventure, and hers was. Jean was pre-deceased by David, Gordon, Peggy, and Joan. Those who walked with her as far as possible are her children Moira McIlwain (Ray), Jim Stiven, Fiona Anderson (Peter Chomitz), Shelagh Cronkite (George); Pauline Beaumont, Anne Walli, Diana Davidson; Don Ilich; Betty Person; her grandchildren Ken, Andrew, Heather, Ruth; Iain, Alastair; Meg, Tessa; Colin, Graham, Jill; Genevieve, Mackenzie, James. Her great grandchildren Lauren, Kara; Claire, Sam; Danika, Keighley, Marek; Ray; Amélie; Nova, Raleigh; Taryn, Owen; Deeken, Cedrick; the Stiven clan (especially Bob and Marlene); her brother, Angus Nisbet; and her lifelong friend, Dola Richardson. And her words and wisdom will infuse our stories… A memorial service will be held at Gordon United Church in Victoria, BC at 2:30pm, March 28, 2015

International Women’s Day On March 8
International Women’s Day 2015: Strong Women. Strong World: Improving Economic Opportunities for All.
Visac Gallery Presents....
A couple from Thrums is bringing their varied talents to the VISAC Gallery in a joint exhibition opening later this month. Kate and Jerry Enewold will be presenting her bead and silver jewellery, joined by woodworker Jerry’s paintings and carved masks and doors. While studying at the Kootenay School of Art’s jewellery studio, Kate said “I fell in love with being a silversmith. It became a passion and I thought, okay, I’ve got a new career.” The influences on her work are as varied as her final creations. “While choosing the colours for most pieces in the daylight, informed by the light and reflections of the natural landscape of my home on the Kootenay River” she is also an avid traveller who gathers ideas and materials wherever she goes. “I love to collect new and used beads, art glass, shell, and semi-precious stones from all over the world. Inspiration comes from ethnic beadwork of other cultures as well as from my own heritage, Celtic and Eastern European. I am drawn to beadwork as a medium because of the sparkle and play of light on the materials. Sterling silver or gold-filled or plated findings enhance the quality of the finished work.” While also inspired by his West Kootenay habitat, Jerry references an inner world when asked about his work. “I live in a creative universe and it flows through me. My fascination with the mysteries of the history, and present state of humankind, presents itself in the inner landscapes transformed to the painted surfaces. “I’m inspired to carve by the rich traditions of the native people of the Pacific Northwest, as well as by my vocation as a woodworker. My home in Thrums on the Kootenay River provides a natural setting that facilitates the artistic process.” Their exhibit opens on Friday, February 20 with a reception from 5 to 7 pm and continues until March 20. VISAC Gallery, 1501 Cedar Ave, Trail is open Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm and until 6 pm on Thursday. Other ongoing and upcoming events at the gallery include a drawing class with Joe Horvath on the last Saturday morning of each month; a four-session rock polishing course with Russ Olson; and Theresa LeRose’s five-session introductory hand-building pottery class. Details are available on our website at www.visacgallery.com/
International Women’s Day takes place each year on March 8. It is a time for Canadians to celebrate the progress that has been made toward equality for women and their full participation in all aspects of society. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the barriers that remain and to take action to overcome them. The Canadian theme of International Women’s Day 2015: Strong Women. Strong World: Improving Economic Opportunities for All, points to the vital contribution that women make every day to both the domestic and global economy. It also highlights the importance of ensuring that every woman has the opportunity to help create prosperity, whether as an employee, a professional, a business leader or an entrepreneur. The Government of Canada is committed to promoting the economic success of all Canadians, including women. Since 2007, the Government of Canada, through Status of Women Canada, has provided more than $60 million for community based projects that promote women’s economic security and prosperity. It is also supporting women entrepreneurs with the creation last fall of the Expert Panel on Championing and Mentorship for Women Entrepreneurs. Quick Facts The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. International Women’s Day now takes place annually on March 8 and occurs during International Women’s Week. In 2015, International Women’s Week runs from March 1 to March 8. In 2014, women represented 47.2% of the labour force, up from 45.7% in 1999 and 37.1% in 1976. Women-owned businesses currently employ over 1.5 million Canadians. In 2013 women held just 15.9% of board director positions among Canada’s FP500 companies. In 2014, the Government of Canada released the report of the federal Advisory Council for Promoting Women on Boards, which provides a roadmap for improving the representation of women on public and private boards, while building a stronger economy. Since 2007, the Government of Canada has provided over $153 million in funding for community based projects, through Status of Women Canada. “On International Women’s Day 2015, we will celebrate the outstanding contributions women make to Canada’s economy and we will reaffirm our commitment to create more opportunities for women to contribute, now and in the future. When women succeed, Canada succeeds.” The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women. Submitted by CNW GroupjCCCH Pennywise

Chamber Of Commerce Week
February 16-20... this week provides you with a perfect opportunity to get to know your local Castlegar & District Chamber of Commerce, and to understand the benefits, the network and what we do for your business and your community. Over 36,000 businesses in BC are members of Canada’s Chamber network. “Our focus is to strengthen your business, offer exclusive member benefits and training resources, and connect businesses like no other organization, says John Winter, BC Chamber of Commerce. But first, let’s debunk some myths. Have you caught yourself wondering what a Chamber of Commerce is and what it does for business?
Myth #1: The Chamber of Commerce is a Bank. False. We are not a bank, we are the most broadly-based business organization working on behalf of small to large businesses. Myth #2: It is a private club: False. We are an accessible, modern organization supporting local business in our communities. Myth #3: Chambers are a part of government. False. Chambers of Commerce engage with all levels of government as a voice advocating on behalf of business. Myth #4: All we offer is group insurance benefits. False. Chambers have a long list of exclusive member benefits to offer businesses. Group insurance is just one of many. Submitted by Castlegar & District Chamber of Commerce
