SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 8 (KOOTENAY LAKE)

LATE FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAM Information Session January 28, 2015

School District 8 (Kootenay Lake) is very pleased to be able to offer a Late French Immersion Program for up to sixty students entering grade 6 in the 2015-2016 school year. The Program is located at Trafalgar Middle School for grades 6-8, and continues for grades 9-12 at LV Rogers Secondary School.

The Late French Immersion Program is an “educational program in which a child whose first language is not French – studies in French.” (Dimitry Morales, Canadian Parents for French website)

Parents, guardians and students who may be interested in pursuing a French Immersion educational program are invited to an information session. The purpose of this meeting will be to share information about the program and the application process.

Wednesday, January 28, 2015 7:00 PM (PST) SD 8 (Kootenay Lake) Board Office 570 Johnstone Road, Nelson, BC. We recognize that not all interested families will be able to attend this information session. Up-to-date information will be available on our website (www.sd8.bc.ca) after January 28, 2015. Because the Late French Immersion Program is limited to sixty students, a process of application for the program is necessary. Details regarding the application process will be made available at the information session on January 28, 2015 – and posted on the District website thereafter. No applications for the program will be accepted prior to 9:00 AM, February 16, 2015. This will allow families to decide whether the program suits the needs of their child. It will also allow all applicants to be familiar with the application process – either through attendance at the information session, or through reading the information on the website.

All inquiries must be directed by email to: Willow Makortoff, wmakortoff@sd8.bc.ca PAGE 6

Wild Cabbage To Cauliflower

• To Place Your Ad Call 1-800-663-4619 •

Did you know that broccoli, cauliflower, kale and brussels sprouts are all descendants of a wild cabbage called brassica oleraca, a plant that was grown in Greece and Italy for more than 2000 years? It is ‘genetic modification’ that has helped bring us some of the vegetables we know and love today. For thousands of years, plant scientists have been selecting traits from various plants to produce tasty, healthy food that ends up on our plates. In fact, agriculture began through the breeding of wild grasses to form the early versions of modern staples such as wheat, corn and rice. Since then, scientists have continued to explore different methods to improve crops. Selective breeding helped produce a subspecies called kale around the 5th century, and breeding flowers with larger buds produced cauliflower and broccoli around the 6th century. They are part of the cruciferae or mustard family, known for its four-part flower in the shape of a cross. Today, broccoli, kale, and cauliflower are prominent in the produce aisles of almost every grocery store – and now you might have a new appreciation for these popular vegetables. www.newscanada.com

Rail Trail Gets Support From Heritage Credit Union The Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society (SVHTS) is pleased to announce the purchase of a new snowmobile thanks to the generous support of the Heritage Credit Union (HCU). The Heritage Credit Union recently made it possible for the SVHTS to realize their goal of replacing their aging snow grooming equipment by making a $13000 donation to the society. This funding has allowed the society to purchase a new SkiDoo Skandic 900 snowmobile to help groom the 50 km Slocan Valley Rail Trail.

As stated by Wilf Rimmer, Manager of the Slocan Valley Branch of the Heritage Credit Union. “This donation is a tangible show of support for the valuable work of society members and dedicated volunteers who take care of the Slocan Valley Rail Trail all year long”. SVHTS Chairperson Helene Dostaler stated. “This is an amazing show of support from the HCU. We thought we were in for a long road trying to achieve our goal and they have shown us just how strong the community supports what we are doing. It is so very rewarding.” The purchase of the snowmobile is part of a $25,000 equipment replacement project the society began in early 2014. Dostaler continues, “Our new winter equipment includes a new groomer/ski track setter bought with Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Program (Dot Day) and some of our reserves from membership fees and donations. While our older equipment still runs, it will allow us to groom and track set the rail trail faster, easier and more efficiently’. An additional grant from Walter Popoff (RDCK Area H Director) was also essential to the society achieving their goal. They are now hoping for more snow so everyone gets out and enjoys the magic of the Slocan Valley Rail Trail. For more information on the society visit them at www.slocanvalleyrailtrail.ca or join them on Facebook. Both locations offer continuous updates on Rail Trail conditions. Submitted by Craig Lawrence

Eliza Fry Exhibits At The Nelson Library Maps and wheels make up the latest exhibition at the Nelson Public Library with the work of Kaslo artist Eliza Fry. Fry comes by her interest in maps honestly. She spent her childhood moving between the prairies and the west coast, and has moved more than 50 times in her lifetime. Somehow over the miles she has collected stories, and these become woven into mixed media works that incorporate maps, wheels, cities, roadways and shorelines. The three large pieces in the show reflect these sensibilities. Water Sustains Us, Water Defines Us incorporates an old blueprint of surveyed lots near Queen’s Bay that Fry found in a Langham storeroom that was “tattered and torn and lent itself very well to being repurposed,” she says. Poem combines maps of BC and Vancouver and references the artist’s love of the ocean. A diptych, World Traveller 2X, combines and old school map of the USSR with stencils made from a drawing of a bicycle, “alludes to the travels I have never done.” As the great-granddaughter of the English artist and art historian Roger Fry, Eliza Fry may have inherited her artistic sensibilities and storytelling nature. “His art filled the homes of my childhood. Looking at it was an ongoing inspiration,” she says. Fry’s multimedia paintings and assemblages are a thoughtful exploration and celebration of the roads she has travelled, and through them, we may see our own journeys. The exhibition continues until the end of February. PAGE 20

Start The New Year With A Clean Slate And Feel Good About It

Now that the holiday season and Boxing Day (and Week) sales are behind us, many British Columbians may find themselves the proud owners of a new TV or electronic device such as a tablet. This begs the question, what can you do with the old television? The answer is simple: visit your local Return-It Depot or ElectroRecycle participating location. If you recycle your older items, rather than transferring them to the basement or guest room, you’ll save energy from standby power, and save money. Plus you’ll clear out some clutter. As an alternative to dropping off your unused electronics at a depot, you can consider dropping off usable items at a thrift shop or charitable organization. With hundreds of locations throughout British Columbia, there’s likely to be a Return-It Depot or ElectroRecycle approved location near you. Visit the Return-It Depot or ElectroRecycle website to view an interactive map of all locations in the province. You can also use your smartphone GPS to find the recycling location closest to you. Download the Recycling Council of British Columbia app (available on both Apple and Android devices) to find the nearest depot. Submitted by Kevin Ball bchydro.com

Announcement for 2015

Wish to apply for project funding?

The Board of Directors regrets to announce that the society will not be offering any community grants in 2015. This decision was arrived after consideration of the funds available to achieve our forestry goals in 2015.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay is now accepting project proposals for CIP/ AAP funding from non-profit organizations, societies, and groups throughout the RDCK.

An important goal for 2015 and perhaps further is to improve the Keen Creek Road as far as the Kokanee Park boundary. We hope that many people in our community will welcome the opportunity to access the park from closer to home, and that this improvement to our area’s recreational infrastructure will prove positive for the local economy.

We welcome your comments. Please let us know your thoughts by writing to us, or by speaking to any director. The door to our office is open every Monday between 9am and 4pm.

Learn How To Quit Smoking! “Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times. Mark Twain famously said this, but millions can relate. Quitting smoking and staying quit, isn’t easy. It takes support, and a few good strategies. The Nelson Public Library and the BC Lung Association’s QuitNow program are teaming up to help on Tuesday, January 13 at 7 pm. This free presentation by QuitNow Health Promoter Louise Poole is scheduled to precede Weedless Wednesday, which this year falls on January 21. “You don’t have to quit at this session, explains Poole. “This is an opportunity to get some free information to help you quit when you’re ready, whether that’s during National Non-Smoking Week, or any time. For almost 40 years Canadians have butted out during National Non-Smoking Week and made Weedless Wednesday a completely smoke-free day. Falling as it does in the third week of January, it’s also a chance to make good on a New Year’s resolution. “There are so many aids available today, quitting really is achievable, says Poole. The presentation offers a chance to learn about the free supports available to help smokers quit, and get the latest information on electronic cigarettes. There’s also an opportunity get a lung test for carbon monoxide, a by-product of tobacco smoke. Smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic respiratory disease and other conditions. Today, about 20% of Canadians aged 12 and over, roughly five million people, smoke, whether it’s daily or occasionally. If these numbers seem high, it’s helpful to note that according to a 2014 study, six out of ten Canadians who have been smokers in the past have now quit. By offering this free information session, QuitNow and the Library hope to encourage more to join the growing numbers of non-smokers.
