Investors Group Walk For Memories
I would like to invite you to take part in the Walk For Memories on Sunday, January 25 at 11 am! This is a fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society, but it is also a wonderful chance to do something together to show how important your work is. You can register as a team or an individual, and if you can’t make it that day, you can support someone who is registered. There are not enough chances to come together and see how many of us are bravely striving to cope with this disease, and how many of us are walking with the caregivers and the people with dementia. We will walk around the INDOOR TRACK upstairs at the hockey arena at the Nelson Rec Centre, have a few speakers, have musical talent perform, a terrific silent auction, food and fun. There will be a table full of information for those who need to know about ASBC services and publications. Please come and be part of your greater community of people with dementia, caregivers and all who give support to these families. Register at walkformemories.com Submitted by Julie Leffelaar

Locavores’ Feast And Six Slocan Valley Minutes
Cabin fever? What better cure for this seasonal malady than the Winter Locavores’ Feast and Six Slocan Valley Minutes (SSVM)? On Saturday, January 24 come to the Vallican Whole Community Centre for an evening of unparalleled sociability and fun. Doors open at 5 pm, dinner is at 6 pm, SSVM starts around 7:30 pm. By now everyone knows the Locavores’ Feast is the 100 Mile Potluck, a celebration of local food and community. And the winter event features Six Slocan Valley Minutes, where you, the community show off your skills and talents be they chainsaw repair, yodeling, or whatever. The kicker is you have only Six Minutes to do it in or you get the hook. Arguably the hook is the most popular act. Local thespian Martina Avis will emcee and infuse the event with her own brand of charm. The evening will also host the Red Roof fundraiser and a silent auction of local services and goods. The building is

undergoing a complete energy refit. We just need to raise a bit more money to put new red shingles on the roof and bring The Whole back to her 1970’s vibrancy. The Heritage Credit Union has donated $2500 towards the roof fundraiser, and challenges the community to match these funds during this event. As HCU’s manager Wilf Rimmer says “The Rural Alternatives Research & Training Society has contributed greatly to the quality of life we all enjoy in the Slocan Valley. Heritage Credit Union is pleased to assist the society’s work in upgrading the Vallican Whole to become more energy efficient.” So come on down and buy your own shingle to put on the roof, and help us reach our goal. The Vallican Whole is at 3762 Little Slocan River Road. Admission to this celebration of local food and community is by potluck item and a donation. How lucky we are to have this award winning trio coming to grace our small stage at The Langham Cultural Centre in Kaslo on Friday, February 6 with their big ideas and their big sound. This amazing trio, with its arsenal of small stringed instruments create a unique eclectic sound. It’s a happy, humourous and energetic mix of different musical styles and traditions. The trio, composed of Sébastien Dufour, Patrick Graham and Frédéric Samson offer two completely different shows: Their Less is More showcase being presented on February 6, combines the group’s original compositions with unusual interpretations from the repertoire of composers such as Ennio Morricone and Jimi Hendrix. It’s all mixed up with a variety of musical surprises, sometimes mind-blowing or at least mind-opening and often witty and whimsical. Join us on Friday, February 6 at 7:30 pm for what’s sure to be an amazing show of up close and personal improvisation and skilled interpretation of musical whimsy and wit. Tickets are $15 and available at Willow Home Boutique and Sunnyside Naturals, two wonderful (and in keeping with the theme, small) stores in Kaslo. Day On The Trail In The Slocan Valley
This year the annual Day on the Trail will be taking place on the Slocan Valley Rail Trail on Sunday, January 25 from 1 pm - 3 pm. This year the crew from the Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society (SVHTS) will be setting up in the Lemon Creek area. From there folks will be able to take a short ski to check out the Arctic and Trumpeter swans which winter over on the Slocan River in the Walter Clough Wildlife Sanctuary. There’ll be a bonfire waiting for you to stay warm by after your ski, and refreshments will be available. You can catch up on the latest Rail Trail news, check out the new snowmobile and groomer the Society recently purchased and/or become a member of the group as well as enjoy a great ski. Best parking will be around the Lemon Creek Trailhead or on Mon Amie Rd. Parking is limited however so park with caution. The snow is always deeper at the north end of the valley and the dedicated volunteer groomers have been setting a good ski track and keeping a lane open for skate skiers, in spite of the limited amount of snow we’ve had so far. To get to the Trailhead, turn left on Kennedy Rd., which is just south of Lemon Creek on Highway 6. If requiring more information you can contact the SVHTS at 1-888-683-SVRT. They also can be found on Facebook or on the website at www.slocanvalleyrailtrail.ca Submitted by Craig Lawrence
Nelson & District Hospice Society Volunteer Training
Nelson & District Hospice Society will be training new volunteers on the first and last weekends of February. The 30-hour training provides the basic training necessary to volunteer here in Nelson as well as in any hospice within BC. The training explores many topics such as the art of communicating with the dying and bereaved, the healing journey of grief, spiritual aspects of dying, the physiology of dying, dying at home, pain management techniques, and disease-specific education on palliative care for cancer, chronic illness and Alzheimer’s/dementia. Most importantly, it gives trainees an opportunity to explore their own attitudes towards their lives, their deaths and grief relating to all experiences of loss. Trainees will also gain new communication skills that can be used for any situation calling for compassion, non-judgmental awareness and relationship building. Successful applicants will volunteer one on one with the terminally ill, the dying and/or the bereaved. If you are at ease with people who are ill and/or grieving, have a willingness to be open and to learn from others and respect for philosophical or spiritual beliefs other than one’s own, consider volunteering with Nelson & District Hospice Society. To apply, please follow these steps: become familiar with Nelson Hospice by viewing our website at www.nelsonhospice.org. Click on “Volunteering”, then download and complete the application form. Email the application and you will be contacted for a pretraining screening interview. PAGE 16

LAW OFFICE
YOU AND THE LAW
WHO GETS WHAT WHEN YOU SPLIT UP? Say you own a house. You meet your future spouse and both of you move into that house. You marry her and a few years later you sell that house and buy a new house with the money, which you put into both your names. If you later break up, does your spouse get a share of the value of the property you brought into the relationship? New BC family law rules for splitting up property and debts came into effect on March 18, 2013, which apply in lawsuits about this started after that date. They cover married and unmarried spouses (such as couples who’ve lived together as if married for two years), including same-sex spouses. Even if you try and sort things out by agreement, the new rules are a useful yard stick for figuring out a fair split. The basic outline is this: all family debts and property you own together or separately at the time of separation – except “excluded property” (such as gifts, inheritances or property either of you owned before the relationship) – are to be divided equally. The court can order a different split, but only if an equal division would be significantly unfair. So far, so good. But the devil is in the details. A recent court case dealt with some of the tricky questions left open by the new rules. Peter (all names changed) started to live with Sandra in the fall of 1990. They got married in 1991, had two children and separated in 2012. When they started their relationship, Peter owned a property which he and Sandra moved into together and lived in for some years. It was worth $65,000 at the start of their relationship.
That property was later sold, and the money was used to buy a new home and some other land that was put in Peter and Sandra’s names jointly. In court, Peter argued that the $65,000 value of the property he brought into the relationship should be “excluded property,” not family property to be divvied up. Sandra said “no” – since the sale money was used afterwards to buy real estate in their joint names, he’d given her one-half of it, she argued, based on some case law that’s still in effect. The new rules don’t specifically deal with the earlier case law. But the BC Supreme Court decided the new family law rules are meant to be complete and comprehensive. It pointed out some problems if the earlier case law were allowed to come into play. For example, married and unmarried spouses would be treated differently when property is split (since the earlier case law only benefitted married spouses). So the court decided that all of the $65,000 value of the property that Peter had brought into the relationship was “excluded property” and not shared by Sandra. And, after dealing with other issues in the case, the court also decided that an equal split of the family property (worth some $1.8 million dollars now) was appropriate and would not be significantly unfair. The new family law rules dealing with the division of family property and debts are complex, and quite different than what they used to be. Consult your lawyer if you’re breaking up with your partner.

HEALTH MATTERS Why do we need food banks? In the midst of a deep recession, Canada’s first food bank opened in Edmonton in 1981; BC’s in 1982. We know today that not only are they permanent but the working poor and those on welfare increasingly are relying on them. “Why do we need food banks when we have employment insurance, pensions, social assistance?” Graham Riches asks. Graham Riches, a former director of the School of Social Work at the University of British Columbia, is one of the world’s foremost experts on hunger and the right to food. “The problem with charitable relief is that the longer-term problems of food insecurity aren’t being addressed,” states Riches. “People cannot afford to put food on the table. It’s not a problem of food supply. It’s a problem of lack of income. Hunger is today seen as a matter for charity. It allows governments to look the other way.” Giving people ‘the scraps off the table’, Riches considers to be profoundly unethical. “What the first-world’s hungry really need is a living wage, adequate income security, affordable housing and, in the case of Canada, an affordable national child-care system,” says Riches. “It comes back to the right to food. It is something we must fundamentally address. Do we have a collective right to water? To air? It’s not just something we can leave to the happenstance of charity. “Nations like Canada have enough money to provide for their people but the approach to government of privatizing, of cutting taxes, of cutting services, of ‘let’s leave all this to the market,’ has been a 30-year failure. Canadians need to have a discussion on: ‘What’s the role of government in relation to domestic hunger?’ I bring it back to the right to food. It’s a question of human dignity.” For the full article on this topic, go to www.oceansidestar.com/news/why-do-weneed-food-banks-1.1687688
IN AN EMERGENCY CALL 9-1-1 Kaslo Emergency Dept
Nutritionist Joins Kaslo Food Hub staff Casey Jones, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, has been hired by the Kaslo Food Hub to provide nutritional counselling, healthy seasonal recipes, food prep ideas, and general health tips to Food Cupboard clients. General health tips range from finding alternative options when clients have an allergy or intolerance to certain foods, physical ailment, or are simply trying to incorporate nutritious foods into their diet. For example, if someone is experiencing elevated stress, Casey will assist the client in selecting nutritious foods and provide recipes for the client to effectively incorporate those foods into their diet. The Food Cupboard, one of the many services offered by North Kootenay Lake Community Services Society (NKLCSS), is a non-barrier service providing nutritious food and resources necessary to achieve food security for Kaslo and Area D. A non-barrier Food Cupboard means anyone in our community can access emergency food, no questions asked. Casey recently graduated with Merit from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in Kelowna, BC. As a Nutritionist, Casey believes diet, lifestyle and mindset are the foundation of our health and key to maximizing our energy levels, wellness and peak performance. The holistic nutrition approach focuses on educating clients of all ages with the tools necessary to restore balance and facilitate the body’s natural healing process. The philosophy is based on identifying the root cause to health concerns and addressing all aspects of one’s lifestyle to achieve optimal wellbeing. Casey is personally devoted to a healthy active lifestyle and thoroughly committed to supporting clients in achieving an enhanced appreciation for greater health and wellbeing. You can find her at the Kaslo Food Hub located in the basement of the St. Andrew’s Church on 500 Fourth Street on Tuesdays from 10am to 1pm, or on Thursday evenings from 5 to 7pm. You can also contact her via email at caseyjones@nklcss.org.

Cold weather health tips It’s getting colder outside and your body is telling you to hibernate. Even though you may tend to be less active, you can help keep yourself fit and healthy with these tips. 1. Eliminate your sleep debt: On average we sleep six-and-a-half hours a night, much less than the seven to nine hours recommended. A good night’s sleep is important for health and wellbeing. Use winter to catch up during the longer nights. 2. Drink more milk: You are 80% more likely to get a cold in winter, so make sure your immune system is in tip-top condition. Milk and dairy products such as cheese, yoghurt and fromage frais are great sources of protein and vitamins A, B12 and D and calcium. 3. Eat more fruit and veg: When it’s cold and dark outside, it can be tempting to fill up on unhealthy comfort food, but it’s important to ensure you still have a healthy diet and include 7-8 portions of fruit and veg a day. If you find yourself craving a sugary treat, try a juicy clementine or satsuma instead, or sweet dried fruits such as dates or raisins. Winter vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, swedes and turnips can be roasted, mashed or made into soup for a comforting winter meal for the whole family. Explore varieties of fruit and veg that you may not normally eat. 4. Try new activities with the whole family: Don’t use the cold winter months as an excuse to stay in and lounge around. Instead, get out with the whole family to try out a new activity – maybe ice skating, or taking a bracing winter walk on the beach or through the park. Aim for an hour out-ofdoors each day. Regular exercise helps control your weight, boost your immune system, and is a good way to break the tension that can build if the family is constantly cooped up inside the house. 5. Have a hearty breakfast: Winter is the perfect season for porridge. Eating a warm bowlful on a cold morning isn’t just a delicious way to start your day, it also helps boost your intake of starchy foods and fibre. These give you energy and help you feel fuller for longer, stopping the temptation to snack mid-morning. Oats also contain lots of vital vitamins and minerals. Make your porridge with semi-skimmed or skimmed milk or water, and don’t add sugar or salt. Add a few dried apricots, some raisins, a sliced banana or other fruit for extra flavour and to help you hit your fruit and veggie target. Compiled by Kate O’Keefe from various sources.

SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 8 (KOOTENAY LAKE)
LATE FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAM Information Session January 28, 2015
School District 8 (Kootenay Lake) is very pleased to be able to offer a Late French Immersion Program for up to sixty students entering grade 6 in the 2015-2016 school year. The Program is located at Trafalgar Middle School for grades 6-8, and continues for grades 9-12 at LV Rogers Secondary School.
The Late French Immersion Program is an “educational program in which a child whose first language is not French – studies in French.” (Dimitry Morales, Canadian Parents for French website)
Parents, guardians and students who may be interested in pursuing a French Immersion educational program are invited to an information session. The purpose of this meeting will be to share information about the program and the application process.
Did You Know… That your kids are covered?
Wednesday, January 28, 2015 7:00 PM (PST) SD 8 (Kootenay Lake) Board Office 570 Johnstone Road, Nelson, BC. We recognize that not all interested families will be able to attend this information session. Up-to-date information will be available on our website (www.sd8.bc.ca) after January 28, 2015. Because the Late French Immersion Program is limited to sixty students, a process of application for the program is necessary. Details regarding the application process will be made available at the information session on January 28, 2015 – and posted on the District website thereafter. No applications for the program will be accepted prior to 9:00 AM, February 16, 2015. This will allow families to decide whether the program suits the needs of their child. It will also allow all applicants to be familiar with the application process – either through attendance at the information session, or through reading the information on the website.
All inquiries must be directed by email to: Willow Makortoff, wmakortoff@sd8.bc.ca PAGE 28

KDCFS Community Dividend
Announcement for 2015 The Board of Directors regrets to announce that the society will not be offering any community grants in 2015. This decision was arrived after consideration of the funds available to achieve our forestry goals in 2015. An important goal for 2015 and perhaps further is to improve the Keen Creek Road as far as the Kokanee Park boundary. We hope that many people in our community will welcome the opportunity to access the park from closer to home, and that this improvement to our area’s recreational infrastructure will prove positive for the local economy.

AKA “Thunderpaws”, this 6 month old cutie pie likes to use the hallway as a racetrack when he is feeling energetic. He and his sister Teeny have been in KAAP foster care for several months now. Because they are initially cautious with new people, they have been overlooked for adoption. Such a shame; they have settled into the foster home, with a small dog, and are sweet and playful, and Jelly looks for lap cuddles whenever he can. Please read more about Jelly and Teeny at: http://www.kaap.ca/adopt/jelly-and-teeny. Or call KAAP at 250-551-1053.

Email: pestmanagementplans@fortisbc.com Tel: 1-866-436-7847 Fax: 250-469-8096
Attention: vegetation management The purpose of the proposed Pest Management Plan (PMP) is to manage problem vegetation on rights-of-way transmission corridors, distribution networks, and their access roads within the FortisBC service area. The FortisBC service area is located in proximity to the communities of Creston, Crawford Bay, Kaslo, Slocan, South Slocan, Nelson, Castlegar, Salmo, Trail, Fruitvale, Grand Forks, Greenwood, and Midway, in the Okanagan Valley from Osoyoos to Kelowna, and in the Similkameen Valley from Princeton to Keremeos. The pest management methods proposed for use include physical (non-chemical) treatment methods (selective slashing, mowing, pruning and burning), a biological control agent (fungus), cultural control methods (planting low growing trees and shrubs and compatible tree species, encouraging agro-forestry, and tree growth regulators/inhibitors when and if registered), and the use of pesticides (herbicides). The common name (and examples of trade names) of the pesticides proposed for use under this plan include: dicamba (Vanquish), glyphosate (Roundup, Roundup Weathermax, Glyphos, Vantage, Vantage Plus), picloram (Tordon), and triclopyr (Garlon 4 or Garlon Ultra). Application methods include: foliar, soil, wick/wipe-on and cut surface, using backpack, wick/wipe-on applicator, squirt bottle, injection tools and handgun (power hose and nozzle). The proposed duration of the PMP is from May 1, 2015 to April 30, 2020. A draft copy of the proposed PMP and maps of the proposed treatment areas may be examined online at fortisbc.com or by contacting the Applicant listed above. A person wishing to contribute information about a proposed treatment site, relevant to the development of the pest management plan, may send copies of the information to the applicant within 30 days of the publication of this notice and before February 13, 2015.

Attention: vegetation management The purpose of the proposed Pest Management Plan (PMP) is to manage wood rot, wood pests and mechanical damage caused by pests on wood structures located on power line corridors, road frontage areas, generation facilities and electrical facilities within the FortisBC service area, including wood structures on FortisBC owned or leased property. The pest management methods proposed for use include stubbing (nonchemical), pole replacement (non-chemical) and wood preservative treatments (internal and external). The use of wood preservative pesticides is intended within the area to which the PMP applies. The common name (and examples of trade names) of the pesticides proposed for use under this plan include: copper naphthenate, sodium fluoride, borax (Cop-R-Plastic, CobraWrap, CuRap20), metam sodium (Woodfume, Guardsman Post and Pole Fumigant), disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (Tim-Bor Professional), boron, boric acid, copper (Impel Boron Rods II, CobraRod), and bendiocarb (Ficam D). Application methods include: external bandages, internal liquid and solid treatments, and external insecticide treatments.

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS! • Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What details would you want to know about an item you were interested in buying? • Include the brand name (manufacturers spend millions promoting the name and enhancing the image of their products, so take advantage of it). Would you rather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire? • List the item’s best features and what makes your item different from others in the same category. (Remember, the more you tell, the clearer picture a potential buyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.) • Take time to research pricing for your article so that you price it reasonably (overpriced items may not receive calls). • Include your phone number and the best times to call. • Ask for the sale...one gentleman put “BUY THIS CAR!” in his ad and was pleasantly surprised by the response to his ad!
