The Summer Nights Tour is named after Summer Nights in New Orleans, a song off of our newly self-released record, Riding Mercury. Our music is a blend of country blues, that we call Doo-Wop Twang.

I grew up near Winlaw and am now based out of Eugene, Oregon. The band and I travel frequently, most recently having toured to Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas for 2015’s SXSW music festival where we were featured performers with 3rd Coast Music. Other featured 3rd Coast performers this year included fellow Canadian Ray Bonneville, Della Mae and Gurf Morlix.

Since the album’s release in 2014, Riding Mercury has been featured on independent and college radio stations throughout the US, Canada and Western Europe. August 2014, Riding Mercury debuted on the Freeform American Roots (FAR) radio charts at #12, alongside the latest from John Hiatt.

Heat Wave Leads To More Power Use

The sustained heat wave province-wide is having an impact on electricity demand. On Saturday evening, BC Hydro recorded an increase of 15% in the peak hourly load over Saturday last week. The peak hourly load – the highest hourly demand observed throughout the day – was 861 megawatts higher than the previous Saturday. On Sunday, there was an increase of 10% or 617 megawatts, in the peak hourly load over the previous Sunday.

The increases are more than the equivalent of running an additional generating unit at the Mica dam and generating station – one of the largest generating stations in the province.

BC Hydro expects the higher than normal electricity demand to continue throughout the week as temperatures in the province climb. Although there is a significant increase in provincial electricity load during a sustained heat wave, BC Hydro still records the highest demand in the winter. cont’d on pg 16

Using music sung by Sicilian fishermen, sulphur miners and folk musicians as a starting point, the group takes the audience on a journey that reveals the drama and passion of Sicily’s past, showcasing the global sound and great musicianship of modern day Canada.

The Kokanee Creek Visitors’ Centre was built in the mid-1970s to encourage a love of nature and educate campers and residents about West Kootenay ecosystems and the value of environmental preservation.

In 2001, the Friends of West Kootenay Parks began operating the centre with the help of grants from the BC Naturalists Federation. And in 2011, the West Kootenay EcoSociety assumed operation of the centre. BC Parks allows us to use the centre free of charge and provides for utilities and repairs. That lets us focus on the important stuff – making sure our thousands of visitors have a fun and informative experience. We still work closely with Friends of West Kootenay Parks to secure funding and recruit volunteers. The wonderful array of programs at the park would not be possible without funding from Columbia Basin Trust, the Regional District of Central Kootenay Areas E and F, and support from people like you.

Re: Discontinuation of Lotto Sales at Kaslo Community Pharmacy I would like to take the time to convey to the people of Kaslo and area, the reasons behind my decision to cease offering lotto services.

Education/Classes

It has always been a “bone of ethical contention” for me to offer this service as, in essence, Lotto is a form of gambling and this is in conflict with my personal and professional commitment to support health and wellness in our community.

Many people are vulnerable and at risk of falling victim to destructive addictions like gambling, smoking cigarettes, and alcohol addiction. Personally, I have seen friends afflicted with gambling issues and have witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences.

To sum it up, this service does not fit my vision for what a health orientated business should offer. (I equate it to me deciding to sell cigarettes.)

I have been advised by the BCLC that they are actively seeking a replacement vendor on or near Front Street.

I apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for understanding and for your support. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

“I Can’t Keep From Singing” Kaslo Workshops

The Summer Choral Workshop: I Can’t Keep From Singing is in its eighth season with conductor Karen Michelle Behn at the helm for her third year. Professional accompanist, Robert Cosgrain, will be joining her, and together they will work with a women’s only ensemble (sorry guys – next year!)

Karen has brought her enthusiasm, energy and sparkle to the summer workshops and her twenty plus years of choral conducting – children’s choirs, church choirs, community choirs – as well as performing as a soloist in a wide variety of settings, from classical to jazz, makes her well qualified to lead this week long workshop! She has a degree in music with a major in voice and piano as well as a jazz diploma from Vancouver Community College. She has taught in the school system for many years and is passionate about bringing musical experiences to her community.

Kaslo has embraced her wholeheartedly, she has leant her expertise to some of JVH’s productions, taught lessons, and begun a children’s choir. As well she conducts a community choir, Kuimba from the autumn through spring.

This year’s I Can’t Keep From Singing course begins Monday, July 20 and culminates with a community concert and celebration on Friday, July 24.

Karen also promises a beautiful cruise and barbecue on Kootenay Lake, a sing-a-long evening of Beatles and other tunes with the local Kaslo Rise Up Singing Group, and individual lessons and coaching for soloists or small ensembles within the larger group.

This week long intensive invites singers of all abilities to come together to sing wonderful choral music in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Experimentation and improvisation are all part of the vocal experience along with a varied and eclectic repertoire. You could find yourself hand clapping and foot stomping! Participants build musical and choral skills, learn vocal technique, make new friendships and bask in the beauty of Alpine Nirvana! L’Abbe will offer in Nelson, on behalf of the Creative Studies department of UBC Okanagan, a credit course called Writing from the Ground Up. The course will be held over four weekends, with the class meeting every other Friday evening and Saturday day September 25 and 26, October 9 and 10; October 23 and 24, and November 6 and 7. Writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama of whatever level of experience are welcome to develop their skills in a workshop setting. Classes will be held at the new UBC West Kootenay Teacher Education Centre at 266 Baker St. More details, including how to register for the course, are available on the website of the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival, www.emlfestival.com, under the Courses tab.

Registration for the course opened on Monday, June 29.

“UBC has said that they’ll accommodate as many people as are interested in taking the course. Since KLS wants to show UBC that there’s solid interest in a credit writing program in Nelson, we hope everyone possible registers.

Jumbo Mysteries - Next Installment

On June 16, the BC Government, by way of our Minister of Environment, Mary Polak, announced that the Jumbo Glacier Resort (JGR) has not made a substantial start. CBC announced that several times. The Jumbo Wild public is elated, thinking Mary’s announcement means Jumbo will be wild forever. Yet the government is only half of the equation.

Today I talked with my government contact person in the Mountain Resort Branch of the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. That office specifically handles the Master Development Agreement, which, when issued in 2010, allowed JGR to put a shovel in the ground and work toward their substantial start to be achieved by October 12, 2014.

The Resort Development Branch had no forewarning about the announcement and were equally surprised. The announcement implies many things. “All this will take some time to figure out. There is much interest in what happens next,� my contact said. It is the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) which takes care of compliance, or in this case, non-compliance, I learned. “First the JGR people will meet with the EAO and then they’ll know better in which direction to head. It is possible that they’ll simply walk away.� So the plot thickens, as the old saying goes.

The Nelson RCMP detachment has recently received several complaints, from concerned residents, indicating that they have received phone calls from person(s) portraying themselves as being employees of the Canada Revenue Agency. The caller advises that money is owed for taxes, demanding payment within 24 hours. The caller further advises that failure to pay within the time period will result in arrest warrants being issued and subsequently executed by the local RCMP. Residents are reminded to use common sense and refrain from forwarding payment and or any personal information over the telephone to unknown persons. The Canada Revenue Agency does not conduct business in this manner and the RCMP is in no way associated with these callers. The Langham Presents Regeneration

The Langham’s Japanese Canadian Museum 2015 summer/fall program series includes Café Langham talks; a gallery exhibition, REGENERATION, and performance; a fundraising event; youth programs; and a mini film festival. The Langham is excited to present this new series which is inspired by and dedicated to the Japanese Canadian citizens and their Asian cultural roots.

The new series highlights two celebrated local senior Japanese Canadian artists, Toru Fujibayashi (Nakusp) and Tsuneko Kokubo (Silverton) in their exhibition, REGENERATION running from Friday, July 24 – October with a gala opening and performance on Friday, July 24.
