Equine Assisted Learning
I have been involved with Equine Assisted Learning in the Kootenay’s EAL program for over five years now. I am fascinated with how it appeals to so many different children. Things such as communication and body language are huge skills that we rely on in every aspect of our days, affording us great success if we are able to master the process. We were able to see a great example of that this session with a young boy, who when he first came to us, was not even able to participate for five minutes, let alone work with a peer or follow direction. However, by the time the sixteenth session was completed, he had dramatically improved his communication skills and was able to function at a much higher level. For example, at the graduation exercise he was working with another young girl who usually barrels through and takes over. The two children came to an obstacle where they had to re-halter a horse head, ie: take off the halter on the statue and replace it with a new one. The two children worked together for almost 20 minutes and after four attempts, finally found success. They discussed the problem between them, made a plan, carried it out, realized the plan didn’t work, made another one and carried on, as a team, until they found success. All this from a little boy who couldn’t focus for five minutes, found it difficult to interact with peers and disengaged immediately when something was too hard!!! I love that this little boy was able to find such huge success whilst working beside older and younger children, kids with higher and lower functioning skills, kids with different personalities and backgrounds. It never ceases to amaze me that each individual can get so much and so many different things from the one program. We have seen remarkable change in several of our returning kids, building on their skill set each time and making great strides in things such as anger management, teamwork, communication skills, problem solving. All of this from the combination of a objective based curriculum, skilled facilitators and amazing horses. It really is such a privilege to have the opportunity to learn from such amazing creatures. For more information contact Leah Hope, Little Oasis Equine Matters, 250-368-2002, www.littleoasisequine.com
The amazing local practitioners will provide information to start you in the right direction. There will also be an all day schedule of mini workshops including: Yoga, Bellyfit, Chinese Medicine, Coaching, Juicing, Meditation, Massage, NIA, and more, all included in the price of admission which is $3-$5.

Rielle Oswald Art Show At The Nelson Library
The new exhibition at the Nelson Public Library nearly jumps off the wall with beautiful, punchy abstract paintings by Kaslo artist Rielle Oswald. Oswald describes her artistic process as “para-conscious flow of found materials in random moments of free time.” Her large, abstract works could also be described as simultaneously complex and simple, multi-layered, and striking. The freedom inherent in these works may stem from other aspects of Oswald’s life. “My career as a teacher has given me the opportunity to interact with children ages five to 18,” she explains. “Many of the finished works end up as samples of techniques or project ideas for use in the classroom. When we create together, not only do we develop our artistic vision but also our interpersonal relationships.” Taking that playful inquiry back to the studio, Oswald embraces an intuitive approach using a variety of media. “I deliberately lose myself in the conceptual moment, not in my actions. In the first step of my creative process there is multi-sensory and interdisciplinary exploration of textures, sounds, materials, and objects,” she says. “Found objects from the road, the beach, the thrift store, and the forest combine with intuitive painting and collage. Each layer inspires the next. Sometimes images are covered, and sometimes they are used in a new way.” The exhibition, entitled Simple Pleasures, continues until the end of April. The Spring Awakening Market will occur at Hart Hall, 510 Carbonate Street in Nelson on Saturday April 18, from 10 am - 5 pm. Entrance fee is a sliding scale from $3 to 5 dollars. The Spring Awakening Market is a fundraiser for the Kootenay Spirit Festival. The first annual Kootenay Spirit Festival was held last year. A small group of community members (all volunteers) for over a year to plan and schedule this amazing event. Our mission was to celebrate all of the amazing yoga, dance, music and meditation that takes place here in the beautiful Kootenays. A home grown festival celebrates the spirit of this special and diverse community. One of our special missions was to make this festival accessible to all. We offered free yoga and music at Lakeside, which was a success in numbers and in spirit! In order to build upon the success, it is important that we hold fundraisers which we hope will also benefit the community. SPRING SALE - Get Ready!
Bone Broth – Why All The Hype?
If you scroll through social media platforms these days or read online news like the Huffington Post you have probably seen recent articles on bone broth and its current popularity as a super food. Bone broth has been used throughout history as healing food and as medicine, prized for its overall nutritional value and healing properties. Several diets such a Paleo diet or the Ice Age diet recommend consuming broth as a protein source to nourish blood and warm the belly, and Chinese medicine utilizes bone broth to strengthen the kidneys, support the digestive system, and build blood. Many cultural traditions include chicken soup, which is known to inhibit cell inflammation and mitigate cold symptoms. The English have been sipping beef tea and drinking beef broth since Victorian times. What makes bone broth so healing is the fact that the long cooking time helps break down the bones and connective tissue, resulting in a collagen and mineral rich broth that is easily digested and absorbed by your body. The high level of collagen found in bone broth aids your body in rebuilding and repairing connective tissue, such as joints, tendons, ligaments, bone, mucous membranes, and skin. Furthermore, bone broth fortifies the immune system during times of stress, cold, and flu, heals the digestive system, improves overall digestion, aids in weight loss and detoxification, and helps the body recover from illness and surgery. Nelson now has its own little broth company, Wild Peach Preserves, offering beef and chicken bone broth made from local, organic meat bones, vegetable and Chinese herbs. Call For Entry: Artists/Heritage Venues
Registrations are being accepted for artists/venues in the Columbia Basin to participate in the seventh annual Columbia Basin Culture Tour (CBCT), a celebration of culture taking place August 8 and 9, from 10 am to 5 pm. The CBCT is a self-guided tour showcasing local arts, culture and heritage offered at no charge to the general public. Arts includes visual, written, performing, media and inter-arts! Participating as a venue allows you to really connect with locals, develop a wider audience, educate the public about what you do, market your activities, and attract visitors to your community. The CBCT allows visitors to meet the participants behind the scenes and allows them to: visit artists’ studios that may not regularly be open to the public, purchase works directly from the artists, visit art galleries, museums and cultural centres to view special interpretive displays, archives, demonstrations or performances. It is also a chance for them to meet the people behind the scenes who are such a vital part of our local culture. Full colour tour directories will be available free of charge to the public as a guide to visit your location. Signage, posters and postcards are provided to promote your participation. Your web page profile will also remain for the rest of the year and will list your contact hours outside of the event.

YOU AND THE LAW
SPOUSAL SUPPORT AND INCOME INEQUALITY - A TREND ARRESTED? Richard, 56, and Alice, 49, (names changed) were married for 20 years. They had no children. Neither made sacrifices during the marriage, and both were self-sufficient and able to make a clean break when they separated. But Alice was earning significantly more than Richard. Should he get spousal support under the federal Divorce Act just because of their “income disparity”? BC’s appeal court decided this case recently. Richard argued that if roles were reversed and a husband made a lot more than his wife after they broke up, she’d almost routinely get some spousal support. Here, Alice had made a career for herself, getting bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a teaching certificate without Richard’s help. She became a high school principal, worked full-time, and earned roughly $120,000 when the marriage broke up. Richard was working for CN full-time when they met. He continued with CN after they got married, earning up to $48,000 a year. Then he was injured in a car accident in 2001, so he later began work as a part-time personal trainer. He said he earned less than $10,000 per year when he left Alice in 2011, but wasn’t able to prove what his earnings really were. He was paid mostly in cash and didn’t keep a record of his earnings or file tax returns. Alice found out after the separation that he also had earnings from questionable activities, selling steroids and growth hormones, but Richard told the court he no longer did that. Economists told the court full-time personal trainers without university degrees averaged between $51,000 and $68,000 a year. The court concluded Richard had chosen to work
only part-time and not to become certified or explore other better-paying occupations – so he was under-employed by choice. The court said his annual income should be treated as though it was between $50,000 and $60,000. The appeal court noted earlier cases where some transitional spousal support was paid to the “disadvantaged” spouse after a long marriage, when there was substantial income inequality post-breakup. But it emphasized that marriage alone, even if long, doesn’t automatically entitle a spouse with lower income to spousal support. If you’re both self-sufficient and a clean start is possible after separation, the lower-income spouse can’t automatically lay claim to the fruits of their ex’s future labour. They must prove why they should get support – whether due to foregone opportunities, need, lack of means or other relevant factors. Here, Richard couldn’t. Another factor in this case was that, after separating from Alice, Richard started living with another woman who made a base salary of $75,000 to $90,000 plus overtime (close to what Alice earned), and they lived in a condo similar to the one Alice bought postseparation. So the appeal court agreed Richard wasn’t entitled to spousal support. (But it allowed him to keep the $17,500 Alice had paid him earlier in interim support – equivalent to transitional support payments.) Before, courts were inclined to automatically award support when there was a big difference in income between the spouses after they split. By stressing that a spouse seeking spousal support must first prove they’re entitled to support, this decision may have put the brakes on this trend.

Jacki-Roberta Boogemans (nee Graham)
August 9, 1949 ~ March 9, 2015
Jacki-Roberta Graham was born on August 9, 1949 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and passed away in Chilliwack, British Columbia on March 9, 2015 after a brief illness. She was the first child born to Jack (John Robert) and Amy Almeda (nee Bayes) Graham. Jacki took pride in being a fabulous big sister to her 3 younger sisters and 2 younger brothers. With her dad in the Navy, the family moved many times all over Canada. She either lived in or slept in every province. This may have started the travel bug for her, or maybe she was just born with it. In Jacki’s first marriage she had Debbie and Mike. After she married the love of her life, Julien, their son Joe was born. Their family was completed by Julien’s children from his first marriage, Bob and Julie. Jacki was proud of each of her children and her grandchildren. She took pride in the accomplishments she knew she and Julien had contributed to. Jacki was the receptionist at A3 Plumbing for most of her adult working life. After retiring she took a few hobby jobs in Balfour so she wouldn’t be bored. She was also the bookkeeper and secretary for Julien’s mobile welding business JB Welding. She and Julien traveled as often as their schedules permitted. She loved spending time with Boogie on Kootenay Lake in their boat. After spending years visiting Balfour Jacki and Boogie moved there in 1998. Although Jacki lived in many places she chose Balfour as her home.

Jacki truly believed “Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body. But rather, to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming …WOW what a ride!” Mark Frost Predeceased by her husband Julien in 2010, her father Jack in 2011 and nephew Brian in 2002, Jackie is survived by her children Deb (Chris), Mike (Mary), Joe (Lace), Bob and Julie; her grandchildren Reace, Brayden, Dana (Chris), Michael (Kayla), Grady, Coen, Julien, Linken, Savannah and Jakob; great grandson Jameson; her mother Amy; her sisters Bobbi (Jim), Patti (Greg), and Toni (Terry); her brothers Troy (Jen) and John (Kristine); her brothers-in-laws Robert (Bernice), Xavier (Ruthanne), Felix (Norma) and Rene (Helen); along with numerous nieces and nephews who knew how special they were to Auntie Jacki. She will be missed by all who knew her. During Jacki’s last days she spent a wonderful day at the Greater Vancouver Zoo with all her children, their spouses and their children. She decided that adopting or feeding the animals at the zoo in Aldergrove was where she wanted any donations in her name to go. If friends and family so wish, donations to the Greater Vancouver Zoo in honour of Jacki’s African Safari would be appreciated. A celebration of Jacki’s life will be held Saturday April 25 at 3:00 p.m. from the Balfour Community Hall.

Café Langham Book Launch Disaster In Paradise Join Amanda Bath and Holley Rubinsky as they launch Disaster in Paradise: The Landslides in Johnson’s Landing (Harbour Publishing, $22.95) at the Café Langham Inspired Ideas speaker series at the Langham Theatre, Kaslo on Monday, March 30 at 7 pm. This is the first event in the Café Langham series for 2015, and will involve a candid conversation about the process of writing and editing Disaster in Paradise, including brief readings and a slide show about the landslides. This event is free for youth, and there is a suggested donation of $10 at the door for adults. PAGE 32

On July 12, 2012 a massive landslide tore into the picturesque Kootenay Lake community of Johnson’s Landing, BC, killing four residents and destroying six homes. The house Amanda Bath and her husband had lived in for seventeen years was among the homes destroyed, and when Amanda returned the next day to search for her cat, she narrowly avoided being buried beneath a second slide. Writing was the therapy that carried Amanda through the painful months that followed. She turned to Kaslobased author Holley Rubinsky for advice and editorial expertise, and they collaborated on ‘building the book’ for more than two years. The result, Disaster in Paradise, tells a story of personal survival, grief and recovery. Amanda details her own experience of trauma and healing and weaves in the stories of others affected by the landslides, including residents and the volunteers in the rescue and recovery missions. For more information on the Café Langham speaker series, please visit www.thelangham.com or contact Maggie at langham@netidea.com or by phone at 250-353-2661. WE CAN PRINT YOUR COMMUNITY INFORMATION ARTICLES. How to get your copy to us: Bring it to our Kaslo office at 401 A Ave; email to editorial@pennywiseads.com, fax to 250-353-7444, or mail to Pennywise, Box 430, Kaslo, BC V0G 1M0. Where: Bluebelle Bistro and Beanery, 302 Fourth Street, Kaslo When: 8 am to 10 am, Saturday, March 28th For over twenty years Bill (a biologist) has worked in the East Kootenay with First Nations and businesses like Teck to improve water ecosystems.
Financial Report & Questions Directors’ Report & Questions Resolutions (Voting for resolutions is by show of hands unless a majority of members present requests voting by secret ballot.)
First Special Resolution:
Purpose: To enable any qualifying person to become a member in good standing upon declaring his or her wish to become a member and the payment of the annual membership fee of $5. To accomplish this, the current bylaws must be altered as follows: Part 2, section 4 - Delete the last sentence: “A new member must have had a valid membership for at least 30 days prior to a general meeting to be eligible to vote at that general meeting.”
Randy’s topics with Bill will include: his and the Green Party’s vision for a diversified economy in Kootenay-Columbia, appropriate carbon pricing, a return to a foreign policy based on the principles of Lester Pearson, and the need for electoral and democratic reform in the House of Commons.
Authorised by Helen Sander – Official Agent: 250-354-2948
Second Special Resolution:
Purpose: To allow a member who cannot attend an annual general meeting to vote for their choice of director via electronic means in advance of the date of the AGM. To accomplish this, the current bylaws must be altered as follows: Add to Part 4, section 22 another item (4): “Voting for directors by email or other electronic means shall be permitted.” Delete: Part 5, 26 (6)(ii) “Balloting shall be in person.” (Note: It will be necessary to make some changes in the appendix of the bylaws to support this resolution.)
Balloting Committee Report Adjournment Election of directors will be by secret ballot. There are three vacancies to be filled. Nominations must be received at the KDCFS office by 4:00 pm on Wednesday, April 1, 2015. Nomination forms are available outside the KDCFS office or on the Society website. If there are fewer than three candidates for the three vacancies, those who have been nominated will become directors by acclamation. To vote, you must have been a member for at least 30 days. If you are a new member (or someone who did not pay their $5 membership fee in 2014) you must have purchased your membership by March 15.
