Keeping Connected and Active in Kaslo and North Kootenay Lake The Kaslo adult and senior walking and exercise group is eager to keep active throughout this coming winter season. The group will meet every Tuesday and Friday morning from 9:30 – 10:30 am at St. Andrew’s Heritage Hall next to the United Church, starting on October 7th. The cost is $2 per session or $12 for the season. The session begins with participants walking for as long as they feel able around the hall and church and then spending about half an hour doing exercises while sitting, standing and walking, with the aim of maintaining flexibility, increasing strength, and improving balance. Here is a great opportunity during the winter to keep active and socialize when it is too slippery, cold or inclement outside. Come join us. For information contact Elizabeth at 250-353-2742 or Mary at 250353-2936. If you live in the North Kootenay Lake area, a similar program will be starting on Monday 20th October at the Lardeau Valley Community Hall at 1:30pm. For information, call Val Smith at 250-366-4236.
Roasting Tomatoes for Fast Winter Meals In our house we eat a lot of tomatoes, particularly in pasta sauce, chilli, soups, and home-made salsa. A few years ago I was complaining to my aunt about not having enough time to can the abundance of ripe tomatoes in my garden. Getting set up, blanching tomatoes, sterilizing jars, and processing…nope, not enough time! She suggested roasting them in the oven… genius! Easier, way tastier, my life was changed! Now each September I roast and freeze a whole lot of tomatoes for use throughout the winter and spring. The flavour from roasted tomatoes is so rich and delicious it totally trumps the canned version in my opinion. Admittedly preserving food in general is more time consuming than buying it from the store. But for me the flavour and quality of preserving fresh tomatoes from the garden or farmers market makes it totally worth it. Plus the investment of extra time in the fall means saving time throughout the winter by having ready-made pasta sauce or the base for chilli, soup, Mexican dishes, etc. ready to go from the freezer. The other benefit to roasting tomatoes is certain nutrients, such as the antioxidant lycopene, become easier to absorb. Tomatoes are a great source of lycopene, which is thought to help prevent prostate cancer. Roasting tomatoes is so easy that a specific recipe is not required – just a few directions are all you need. Here is what I do. I like to use Roma tomatoes because they are not watery and the flavour becomes very concentrated. Preheat the oven to 350˚ F. Slice tomatoes in half and place on a large cookie sheet or baking dish. Add chopped onion and garlic (and any other garden vegetables you have on hand such as zucchini or peppers). Drizzle with olive oil and mix tomatoes so everything is coated. Arrange tomatoes cut

side up and then bake for approximately one hour or until tomatoes look a bit shrivelled and caramelized. Allow tomatoes to cool then puree in food processor or leave whole depending on how you plan to use them. Tomatoes that are not pureed can be peeled if desired (too finicky for me, I don’t mind the skins). Transfer to medium sized freezer bags and lay flat to freeze as this creates more space and efficient storage. Give it a try! Enjoy! Reap the Benefits of Reading You’ve probably heard that reading to children is an important way to build language skills and intelligence. But did you know that reading to infants is important, too? You wouldn’t hold off on talking to your baby until they can form words, talk, and understand so why wait to start reading? While it may seem like an infant won’t get much out of books, the truth is reading to your new baby helps build a foundation for lifelong learning and development. Here are some added benefits to reading to baby early: Bonding: Your little one will find your voice, your heartbeat, and your scent very comforting. Over time, she’ll come to associate books with being close to you. Early skill development: Listening to you read exposes baby to words, phrases, and interaction which are building blocks of life-long skills. Brain stimulation: The colours, textures, and sounds in books will help with baby’s mental growth and awareness of her surroundings. Better sleep: Reading together as a part of your night-time routine is a calm, soothing activity that helps set the stage for a restful sleep. What to look for in books for babies: Fun to look at: books with bold contrasting colours, patterns, and shiny surfaces will fascinate your baby. Fun to touch: look for books with noisy or “crackly” textures. Washable and durable: board books and cloth books are great for babies and toddlers. It’s never too soon or too late to start reading to your child. In fact, if you start before baby is born you may notice she responds by kicking and moving. If you want to learn more about the benefits of reading to toddlers, check out this site: h t t p s : / / w w w. e a r l y m o m e n t s. c o m / Promoting-Literacy-and-a-Love-of-Reading/ Why-Reading-to-Children-is-Important/

“We have also challenged specific community leaders to eat for eight days like many of our Food Cupboard customers do – on only what they receive from food banks and Our Daily Bread.” The kick-off luncheon for the Community Leader Challenge will be October 16 at Our Daily Bread with Food Cupboard customers sharing their experiences with the participants of living in poverty and trying to eat. The Wrap Up and Community Awareness Celebration will be October 23 at 6 pm at the Nelson United Church. The public is welcome to attend and enjoy a delicious local harvest dinner celebrating simple but nutritious cooking – the kind that could be enjoyed with ingredients from the Food Cupboard.

Chew On This… The Nelson Food Cupboard is hosting a unique and exciting community event called Chew on This… to coincide with Homelessness Action Week and World Food Day, October 16. Chew on This… is a challenge to the community to discover what it is like to have a food budget similar to somebody living in poverty. It is designed to highlight the inadequacies of current Provincial allowances for social assistance, disability pensions and minimum wage, and raise awareness around what it is like to have to rely on food banks and other social agencies for food. “You may have started to see our advertising around town,” says Food Cupboard Coordinator Kim Charlesworth, “We are encouraging the entire community to participate through the Do the Math online survey at www.foodcupboard.org/chew-on-this/. It will make you think about what you would need to make ends meet if your situation changed and you had to rely on social assistance by comparing your results to what a person making minimum wage, or on disability or social assistance receives each month. ”

Susan Stevenson 1948-2014 We are saddened by the death of Susan Stevenson of Winlaw. Susan died Friday, August 29th in the Nelson hospital, where she had been admitted August 25th. She had been living with cancer over the past 8 months but continued to fulfill her roles as Clerk of Canadian Quakers until late August. Both Susan and her husband David have felt blessed in the support through this journey by family, the local community, and the health care system. David treasured each of his 43 years with Susan. Those of us who have known and worked with Susan over the years will greatly miss her – her groundedness, her engagement in the Quaker community, and her love of life and the beauty of the biodiversity around her. As a published forest wildlife ecologist Susan played an instrumental role in joining UNBC faculty, students, industry, and other community partners in research and education projects during the 35 years she and David lived in Prince George. Her work with the BC Assoc. of Professional Biologists played an important role in developing standards of professional practice and introducing students to career possibilities. Susan is survived by her husband David, her sons Samuel and Peter, and her sister Marjorie. A memorial to celebrate Susan’s life will be held in Winlaw. The date and location will be announced in this paper or can be obtained by contacting David Stevenson at dgstevens (at) telus (dot) net.

NaNoWriMo Is Coming
Celebrate Trash!
The largest writing event in the world returns to the Kootenays this November, when National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) participants around the globe hit their keyboards. The challenge – to write 50,000 words of a novel in 30 days. “NaNoWriMo challenges writers,” says NaNo Municipal co-Liaison Deb O’Keeffe.“The best way to learn to write a novel is by plunging in and just doing it!” There are no entry fees, no judges, no prizes. Just a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to finally getting that novel written. Last year, 63 Kootenay residents joined 400,000 people worldwide (including one very chilly writer at Antarctica’s McMurdo Station) who wrote their stories in November. Typing away at home, in coffee shops or in libraries, those 63 intrepid writers managed to produce a staggering collective total of 1,524,426 words. “We’ll be making things more exciting this year,” says Karina Kram, the Kootenay’s veteran Municipal Liaison for NaNoWriMo. “Thanks to the NaNo website’s Kootenays Regional Forum, we’re able to virtually connect with participants throughout November. This year on the forum there’ll be online chats, weekly draws for prizes, writing challenges – lots to make NaNoWriMo fun for the whole Kootenays.” O’Keeffe agrees. “NaNo writers in the region are always spread out. The regional forum keeps us all connected. Last year, someone in Rossland won our NaNo Champion mug for most words written by a Kootenay writer. This year, we want to get even more people from more places involved.” Although NaNoWriMo emphasizes creativity over literary masterpiece, more than 250 projects begun during NaNoWriMo have gone on to become published works, including bestsellers such as Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, and The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. To read a complete list of published works, learn more about NaNoWriMo and the Kootenays Regional Forum or to register, go to www.nanowrimo.org, http:// nanowrimo.org/regions/canada-british-columbia-kootenay-district or contact Deborah (writerdeborah@gmail.com) or Karina (kapinaknits@gmail.com).
It’s Trash to Treasure time again! The RDCK’s semi-annual celebration of waste reduction is happening on Saturday, October 18. This one-day event provides participants with an opportunity to give away used items to those who may find value in them. This is also a chance for residents to search their community for their neighbours’ unwanted treasures. On October 18, residents are encouraged to place any gently-used, unwanted household goods together at the front of their property in a location that can be safely accessed by treasure hunters. A sign should clearly indicate which items are available to take home. By 4 pm the same day all remaining items should be gathered up and taken inside. Please keep your community and roadways clean by removing unwanted items! Visit the RDCK’s website to download a Trash to Treasure sign for your property: www.rdck.ca. For further information, please contact Brittny Anderson, M.Sc. Environmental Services Coordinator 250-3528161 (Office). Halloween Chocolates... Where do you get yours? This Halloween, help make life sweeter for children around the world. Your purchasing choices have the power to change the world. Fair trade, organic chocolate is sourced directly from small farmer cooperatives, who are paid a better price for their product and who adhere to better working conditions and environmental standards. Fair Trade Halloween kits, containing 30 delicious fair trade, organic Camino chocolates and Fair Trade info cards are available for $10 each and can be ordered by emailing fairtradehalloween@gmail.com or by calling 250-551-6737. These treats help to make life sweeter for children around the world, by raising awareness about production practices behind conventional chocolate, and encouraging conscious consumerism. The chocolates are donated by La Siembra, a Canadian cooperative, and all profits will benefit the Nelson Food Cupboard. Fair trade chocolate, and locally produced chocolate, is also available at the Kootenay Coop and other local grocery stores. Other ideas for treats to give out include Fair Trade teas and art supplies. Over half the world’s cocoa is produced in West Africa, yet many of the communities involved with conventional cocoa production see very little of the profit generated by consumption in North America. The cocoa farmers are often taken advantage of due to their lack of knowledge and resources. In addition to heavy pesticide use, UNICEF has documented the use of child labour – sometimes using trafficked children who are paid little or no wages, work in dangerous conditions, and have never tasted chocolate. For more info on Fair Trade, visit www.fairtrade.ca Submitted by Jen Smith

Thank You A BIG THANK YOU to Steve at Kaslo Automotive for providing excellent service and getting my visiting family back on the road. You made their trip a great experience and Kaslo the best place ever. Thank you so much, Patty Axenroth. MY HEARTFELT THANKS TO the generously thoughtful people in Kaslo & the surrounding communities whose loving support, helpfulness & expressions of condolence have been inestimably timely gifts to me, our children, visiting Oregon family & U.S. visiting friends. I can’t imagine living through the initial shock of losing my beloved husband of 52 years, preparing Dirk’s funeral & reception (especially St. Mark’s members, Paul Van Deursen, Mel Bryce, Julie Meyer, all the bakers, chair loaners & movers), welcoming & feeding visiting family members without the significant helpfulness of Arena Ave. neighbours, RCMP Constable Tim, the BC Ambulance crew & First Responders, my three dear children, food & flower givers & the whole regional Anglican family. How grateful I am to have made our home for 23 years among such a caring community! Karen Pidcock.

Richard John Wassick Richard John Wassick was born on February the 13th, 1927 at the Kootenay Lake General Hospital and grew up in Nelson. He was the second son of Harry and Anne Wassick, Nelson hotel owners and long time residents, with two brothers Red Wassick and Bob Wassick, and two sisters Betty Agnew and Dorothy Anderson. Richard was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, sportsman, fisherman, hunter, hockey player, musician, log house builder and unconditional friend. He was an active member of Masonic Lodge number 23. Richard attended school in Nelson, graduating high school in 1946. He apprenticed as an automotive parts-man at Mckenzie, White and Dunsmuir in Nelson and then on to Finning Tractor. Later he became a cat operator for CPR where he worked maintenance-of-way from Vancouver to Crowsnest. He also had a short-term trucking business in Kimberley, BC, before employment with the fertilizer plant in Kimberley; then West Kootenay Power and Light at South Slocan for 32 years, retiring in 1991. He spent most of his spare time building a spectacular log house at Trout Lake, BC, from scratch, logging out of the bush for the 60 cedar logs and taking forty years to complete. He loved Nelson and the area and never wished to leave. Richard married his high school sweetheart, Isabel Doris Trevelyan Coleman at 7pm August 4, 1948, here in Nelson’s St. Saviour’s Church, 66 years ago. Together they had four children: Connie, Dick, Bud, and Duncan; six grandchildren, Rick Dawson, Nicholas and Dalton Wassick, Cassie and Mac Wassick, and Madison Wassick; and two greatgrandchildren, Coleton and Merrissa Dawson.

WELCOME BACK My name is Nahla, are you my new family? Let me tell you about me. I’m a playful, young girl looking for her forever home. I have lots of puppy energy left so an active family that would give me lots of exercise would be great. I can be defensive around dogs at first, but once introduced I get along well with them. As for cats, not a fan really. The nice people here will tell you that being a young girl a bit of obedience training would be required. But you’ll see I’m a quick learner and love treats! If you’re interested, please call the Nelson SPCA at 250-352-7178

Grant Lawrence Comes To The Langham Join Grant Lawrence and singer Jill Barber for an evening of entertainment at the Langham on Monday, October 20, at 7 pm. Lawrence will share stories from his books, show slides and a short film, and talk about his conflicted – yet ultimately positive – relationship with hockey. Jill Barber, a celebrated jazz singer, will also perform. In addition to being a CBC host, an eminent indie-rock alumnus, and the award-winning author of the best-selling book, Adventures in Solitude: What Not to Wear to a Nude Potluck and Other Stories from Desolation Sound, Grant Lawrence has another claim to fame: as a baby, he spent part of a plane ride from Toronto to Montréal on Bobby Orr’s lap. Grant, his parents, Orr and the rest of the Canadian hockey team were on their way to Game 3 of the famous Summit Series between the Soviet Union and Canada in 1972, during the height of the Cold War. It was at this tender age that Grant’s lifelong entanglement with hockey began. Grant Lawrence’s most recent book, The Lonely End of the Rink: Confessions of a Reluctant Goalie (Douglas & McIntyre, $26.95) is an ingenious combination of hockey lore, Canadian music history and personal anecdotes. The book instantly hit the national bestseller list on its release in October 2013. It is a hilarious account of hockey’s influence throughout Lawrence’s life: first when he was a knee-brace-wearing bully-magnet, tormented by the hockey-obsessed jocks at his school; then as a rock star touring the country with his band, The Smugglers; and finally, when he became a CBC broadcaster and journal-

Below ground level deep in the Selkirk Mountains you’ll find ancient caverns untouched by the light of day. Hollowed out by millions of years of rushing glacier waters and surrounded by limestone walls, these caves offer a unique education for adults and children alike. The intriguing history and geology of Cody Caves are the topics of discussion during a tour of this natural underground classroom. The photo pictures owner/operator Lee Hollis giving a science and history lesson to interested cave visitors. Cody Caves Provincial Park is home to the 1.6 km cave system located above Ainsworth Hot Springs and Kootenay Lake. It is believed the labyrinth of cave passageways still withhold secrets which have yet to be discovered, beyond the travelled paths currently explored today. Guided tours will soon be available year round to marvel at the intricate ice formations that uniquely re-form each winter. Cody Caves also offers popular tours for school groups that are specifically tailored for educational purposes. Reservations are required. www.codycavetours. com 250-359-CAVE (2283). To: The Children Of Gaza Please join us on Sunday, October 19 from 6 to 8 pm for To: the Children of Gaza, a traditional Palestinian family dinner and cultural event that will be held in the Nelson United Church. The evening, which will include a silent auction, will raise funds to provide emergency medical care and medical supplies for children in Gaza, to be administered through the Department of Services to Palestinian Refugees – Gaza Area Committee. This charity provides emergency health care for the most vulnerable communities in Gaza. Staff and volunteers live in and work with the everyday reality of the current humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians. Proceeds from the event will assist highly skilled local and international doctors and emergency health care workers in the treatment of these children. Advance tickets are available at Otter Books and Mana’eesh Restaurant, $35 for adults and $20 for children thirteen years and under. Tickets will also be available at the door starting at 5:30 pm. Event partners include NEON, KAIROS, Amnesty International (Nelson Chapter) and the Nelson United Church, and the radio sponsor Kootenay Co-op Radio.
Buy Goodies ... See Fireworks The Crescent Valley Fire Department (CVFD) will be holding its annual bake sale at the South Slocan branch of the Kootenay Savings Credit Union on Friday, October 17. The proceeds of the bake sale are the primary fundraiser for the annual CVFD Halloween fireworks show.
Additional funding is provided by donations from local businesses and residents. Each year, for more than 10 years, the CVFD has been putting on a huge fireworks display at the Fire Department, with over $1,500 worth of fireworks shot off last year. Hot chocolate, candy, and a costume contest also occur in the fire hall, along with tours of the fire engine and other equipment. The bake sale will be running all day during the normal Credit Union hours. For more information, or if you would like to donate directly to the fireworks fund, contact Ryan Durand at 250-359-7420 or rdurand@rdck.bc.ca.
Not Your Garbage, Please The Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society raises money at the Thrift Store for the health and well-being of the community. We like to recycle, re-use and reduce waste – but this does not include dealing with people’s garbage. Recently many items have been left outside the store that should have gone straight to the transfer station. The VHKAS has to spend money to deal with garbage, using up money that could have gone to support our community. Our Store is staffed entirely by volunteers who do not have the time or desire to sort garbage, bag garbage, or drive garbage to the transfer station, or to Nelson for recycling. We truly appreciate the donations of clean items in good, working condition that we can sell, but our store space is very limited. For instance, we cannot take large items – televisions, old microwaves, computers or furniture. Please consider this when dropping off anything at the store, or check with a staff member. Thank you.
