Susan Stevenson

Animals/Animal Care

1948-2014 We are saddened by the death of Susan Stevenson of Winlaw. Susan died Friday, August 29th in the Nelson hospital, where she had been admitted August 25th. She had been living with cancer over the past 8 months but continued to fulfill her roles as Clerk of Canadian Quakers until late August. Both Susan and her husband David have felt blessed in the support through this journey by family, the local community, and the health care system. David treasured each of his 43 years with Susan. Those of us who have known and worked with Susan over the years will greatly miss her – her groundedness, her engagement in the Quaker community, and her love of life and the beauty of the biodiversity around her. As a published forest wildlife ecologist Susan played an instrumental role in joining UNBC faculty, students, industry, and other community partners in research and education projects during the 35 years she and David lived in Prince George. Her work with the BC Assoc. of Professional Biologists played an important role in developing standards of professional practice and introducing students to career possibilities. Susan is survived by her husband David, her sons Samuel and Peter, and her sister Marjorie. A memorial to celebrate Susan’s life will be held in Winlaw. The date and location will be announced in this paper or can be obtained by contacting David Stevenson at dgstevens (at) telus (dot) net.

GEOFFERY IAN ROSS-SMITH AKA “Papa G” and “the Ice Cream King”, passed away suddenly September 25th, 2014 at the age of 46 years in the Trail hospital. Geoff lived a life full of passion and love. He was born in Calgary, Alberta July 27th, 1968 and was adopted by his loving parents Vilda and Denny RossSmith, who later gave him a sister, Kat. In the summers you could find Geoff at Woodbury selling his famous homemade ice cream. He made Fruit Of The Moon a must stop for tourists and locals alike because of his kick ass coffee. As he would tell you “it’s the best in the Kootenays.” Friday nights he spent winning money at poker with his good friends at the Ainsworth Hall. Their poor choice in cards and willingness to lose week after week funded his love of motorcycles. When he was on his bike his cherished riding friends would struggle to keep up and he enjoyed schooling them regularly.

PAGE 34

Oct. 7, 2014

Geoff lived where he loved, and loved where he lived. His greatest passion was loving his wife of 17 wonderful years, Nanette (alias honey bun), with daughters Kaitlin and Marja, growing beautiful gardens at Redfish Creek. The yin and yang of their relationship created a balance of love, trust and compassion for what they believed in. “I loved this man. I loved seeing him and I loved listening to him and I loved the way he smiled. I loved the way he made eye contact with you, connected with your heart and sincerely wished you well when parting ways. I loved his belligerent humour, his boisterous laugh, and his silly outbursts of frustrations. I loved everything about this man and will miss him more than words can justify.” He now joins his mother Vilda Ross-Smith in a place we can only imagine. He leaves behind his loving father Denny; loving wife Nanette and her daughters Kaitlin and Marja; his loving sister Kat with his wonderful nephews Gabe and Justin; Aunty Weeny and many cousins. The service to celebrate his life was held at the Balfour Covenant Church on Thursday October 2.

NOTICE The Kaslo & District Community Forest Society (KDCFS) is planning a broadcast burn in CP 35-Blk 1 – Nashville/Keen Creek area in the next 2-3 weeks, weather and venting indices dependent. The purpose of the broadcast burn is to minimize the hazard of wildfire and to prepare the site for a spring plant. KDCFS believes the burn significantly improves the chances for success of the future plantation. Slash piles in the Nashton/Nashville/Keen Creek areas will also be burned this fall. The Society wants to thank residents for their support and apologizes for any inconvenience the burning may cause. Kaslo Concert Society’s 41st Season

• Kootenay Lake/Nelson RR 1&3 •

Kaslo Concert Society is pleased to announce its lineup of classical music concerts for 2014-2015. We begin on October 24 with Sergei and Nikolai Saratovsky in a program of music for piano four hands – that’s two people at one piano – a rare treat. Friday, November 21 we welcome back Duo Diorama – the piano/violin team of Winston Choi and Ming Huan Xu who charmed us with their music in 2009. In February we are pleased to welcome guitarist Rita Deane and soprano Noemi Kiss – two Kootenay based performers – for the Jack G. McDowall Memorial Concert. In March we have Quintessence – a vocal quartet specializing in a wide range of music from Opera to Gershwin and Kurt Weill. And finally in May the piano/cello duo of Paul Marleyn and Mauro Bertoli in a program that they call Slavic Landscapes. Kaslo Concert Society is grateful for financial assistance from CFNKLS, the Village of Kaslo, CBT/RDCK, Columbia Power Corporation, BC Touring Council, and the Kaslo & District Community Forest Society. We encourage our patrons to take advantage of the season subscription of $80 for all five concerts. These tickets are available at Figments in Kaslo and will also be available at the first concert on Friday, October 24. Single tickets at the door on the night of the concert are $22. Please note that all concerts are at St. Andrew’s United Church and begin at 7 pm. For information please contact David Stewart at 250354-5368 sjdks@kaslo.org

Bras At The Barn At Esprit de la Femme, we know breasts. Since October is breast cancer awareness month, we decided to raise money again for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation by collecting unwanted bras. Let’s face it, ladies – we all have bras lurking in our drawers that don’t fit properly, have bad memories, or that we’re just plain tired of. This is the perfect time to purge those bras for a good cause! There will be a $7 donation from our financial sponsors for each bra donated. We also have three grand prizes to be won. Each bra you donate is an entry. Bring your bras to the Nelson Leafs game Saturday October 11 or drop them off at Esprit de la Femme or 1035 Juice FM. We hope you’ll take the time to participate in this popular community event while supporting the Nelson Leafs and women in need in our community. Together we can help end breast cancer!
