STUDENTS AT JVH SCHOOL are able to take part in a class called Outdoor Adventures, which consists of hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, skiing, and more around the Kootenays. The class is designed to give students the skills they need to be safe outdoors and take care of their local environment. Our biggest barrier to getting kids outside boils down to funding. We have started a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money for our class adventures and hope you are willing to support us - every penny counts! If you’d like to donate to the Outdoor Adventures class at JVH, stop by the school or visit our Go Fund Me website: https://www. gofundme.com/rural-youth-outdoor-education

Dick “The Admiral” Smith 1930-2018
Dick was born in Glasgow, Scotland to Mabel and Richard Smith. A self-described “clever Dickie” from the get-go, he spent much of his youth exploring the Hebridean Isles in kayaks he built in his basement. He received training as a draftsman in the shipyards of the River Clyde, and at the age of 23, he set out for New Zealand. Due to some happy twist of fate – or perhaps just a bad sense of direction – Dick wound up in Calgary, Alberta. There he met Dee-Dee, his future wife of over 50 years. Although he had a secure job as Chief Draftsman of the Alberta Gas Trunk Line, Dick’s heart belonged to ships. And so with Dee-Dee’s unwavering support, he moved his young family to Kaslo, B.C. to embark on a new path: building steel-hulled ships for the charter industry. This was a mammoth undertaking, but with his keen vision and unique skill – and a healthy dollop of eccentricity – “clever Dickie” managed to pull it off. He established the Kaslo Shipyard Company and built five vessels that would ply the water of Kootenay Lake for decades to come. Dick will be remembered by many for his quick wit and sharp mind. Though he never once turned on a computer, Dick was the original Google, with a head full of facts about everything from Mother Teresa to Cromwell to the Beatles. Beyond his intelligence and humour, there is one quality that defined the man: optimism. (It was no coincidence that he named one of his ships after Voltaire’s optimistic title character, Candide.) Dick Smith embodied pluck and positivity, and when asked, “How ya doing, Dick?” his reply was often a resounding, “Superb!” Bon voyage, Admiral, you were a truly superb man. His family will have a proper tribute to him in the future, and there will be plenty of advance notification. Toby, Lorna and Barbara

Greg You have not met a more lovable cat than Greg! This big boy looks tough, but he is such a softie who really wants to live the cushy life in your house. Greg came in stray, un-neutered and with war wounds from street fighting, but is ready to settle down now! As Greg came in as a stray, we don’t know his exact age, but estimate him to be around 5 years old. He is not fond of other cats but loves humans like you would not believe. For more information on Greg, please contact the BC SPCA Nelson Branch at 250-352-7178.

Last Greyhound trip Greyhound Canada started in Nelson in 1929 – the first routes ran from Nelson to Trail, Kaslo and Nakusp. Now, 89 years later we will be making our LAST TRIP on Saturday, October 27, leaving Nelson at 9:35 am and arriving in Grand Forks at 11:45 am. It all started in 1922, when Johnny Learmonth built his own bus and started a daily trip from his home at Willow Point going to Nelson and return. As roads became more passable he was running to Trail, having to rebuild and improve his bus as the rough roads were so tough on vehicles. Added trips to Kaslo and Nakusp began when he partnered with Herb Harrop, forming Kootenay Valley Transportation. This successful business attracted Seattle men who purchased it and incorporated as Canadian Greyhound Coaches Ltd, BC on November 30, 1929. By 1931, a new road was completed up the east shore of Kootenay Lake to Gray Creek, where the Sternwheeler SS Nasookin became the ferry to Frasers landing (Balfour). That allowed the company to run buses daily from Nelson to Calgary, with a connection at Kingsgate where passengers could transfer to a bus to Spokane and on to California. The BC government first chartered the big sternwheeler SS Nasookin from the CPR and then purchased it in 1933. Thus the Kootenays became the only place in the world where a sternwheeler carried a daily Greyhound, carefully balanced across the bow. In the 16 years of this operation, there was never an accident of any kind. My sister Alice and I grew up running the frequent phone messages to the bus drivers. When sometimes the steam powered Nasookin was off for a boiler clean, the SS Moyie would fill in. Since the Moyie was not large enough to carry a bus we would have a spare coach parked in our yard and a mechanic would be eating meals with our family. My Dad never had a car so we always used the bus that came to our doorstep - our store was a Greyhound Depot. Having grown up with Greyhound I have always been a dedicated Greyhounder and it’s sad to see this popular service disappear. Trail has retained an unusually attractive Greyhound Depot dating to the days when the only road across Canada went through Trail and Rossland. I think this is one of the oldest depots that has remained in the same location for some 65 years. I visited Trail recently hoping to get a good photo of this building – but I was too late as how the signs have all been stripped away. Anyone have a good photo? Please contact lymbery@netidea.com Submitted by Tom Lymbery

Free-range, locally-sourced theatre tours the West Kootenays Slocan Valley theatre artists Marya Folinsbee and Martina Avis are bringing their new play, Be/Longing, to communities around the West Kootenays this fall. Be/Longing is a play told through a series of sketches, inspired by the history, stories and experiences of the writer/performers and other women in their community. The play debuted at the Vallican Whole in March of 2018, to a sold-out and enthusiastic audience. Marya and Martina have since received a touring grant from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, so they are taking their show on the road. Martina was born and raised in Winlaw. She left for a time to study theatre in university, and to live and work in other places, but ultimately, she came back home. Since returning, she has been making theatre happen in her own little community, directing shows for the Valley Gems, a local troupe, and most recently, teaching drama at Mt. Sentinel. She’s also found a collaborator in Marya, a theatre artist and clown who moved to the Valley six years ago. Together, they have created a humble portrait of their home, a two-woman play that explores some of the experiences of living in rural community, written by a “local”, and someone “from away”. This fall, Martina and Marya are performing Be/Longing for audiences in Winlaw, Kaslo, Silverton and Nelson. They have begun in Winlaw, to an intimate audience in the living room of Marya’s cabin. On October 20th they started their tour at the Langham Cultural Centre as part of the Langham’s Guest Artist series. November 3rd they will be gracing the newly-renovated Silverton Gallery. They finish up this tour November 10th with shows in Nelson at Hart Hall. Tickets for all the shows are $15. Audiences can expect a funny, absurd, and moving evening of theatre, which sees the actors inhabit multiple characters, bizarre scenarios, and deep truths about rural life and community. The play is most suitable for a teen to adult audience, as it contains some mature subject matter. For more information about the tour, and for ticket information, please visit www.missmarmot.com, contact the Langham or Silverton Gallery, or search “Be/Longing Fall Tour” on Facebook. Search for Nelson’s 2019 cultural ambassador is on! The Cultural Development Committee (CDC), on behalf of the City of Nelson, is currently inviting applications and nominations for the position of Nelson’s 2019 Cultural Ambassador in the category of Theatre/Performance. The award comes with a $1000 honorarium and the winner will be announced in December. Applications and nominations should be for professionals, either individuals or groups, working in the field of Theatre/Performance. Preference will be given to those who will be performing outside of the City limits, in addition to within Nelson. “The Cultural Ambassador program is entering its tenth year, and the response we’ve had from the community has been tremendous,” says Sydney Black, Chair of the Cultural Development Committee. “The roster of talented professionals we’ve had representing our City is impressive: dancer Slava Doval, writer Eileen Delehanty Pearkes, visual artist Ian Johnston, musician Bessie Wapp, filmmaker Amy Bohigian, actor Lucas Myers, dancer Hiromoto Ida, author Anne DeGrace, fibre artist Angelika Werth, and the Corazon Youth Choir. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the City to recognize and reward the exceptional talent we have here.” The CDC established this honour in recognition of local individual artists, groups or collectives who have achieved a high standard of excellence in their artistic discipline and who are active not only in Nelson’s cultural community but extend their talents to other communities and countries. The Cultural Ambassador is expected to represent and promote the City of Nelson on their travels, increasing the visibility and cultural reputation of Nelson. In return, the Cultural Ambassador can use their official designation in their own promotional materials, programs and fundraising. Deadline for submissions is October 30th, 2018. Please contact Joy Barrett, the City of Nelson’s Cultural Development Officer at cultural@nelson.ca for an application or nomination form or for further information. www.nelson.ca

Author Lorinda Stewart to speak about daughter’s kidnapping On August 23, 2008 Lorinda Stewart’s daughter, Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout, was kidnapped in Somalia. The kidnappers’ demand: pay a $2.5 million ransom or Amanda would be killed. For the next 460 days, Stewart did everything in her power to get her daughter back alive. That experience became a book. On Thursday, November 1 at 7pm, Stewart’s story—detailed in her 2017 memoir One Day Closer: A Mother’s Quest to Bring Her Kidnapped Daughter Home—will be front and centre at the Nelson Public Library. The evening begins at 7pm with a conversation between Stewart and journalist Bill Metcalfe as she recounts her experience. The story is harrowing. The RCMP requested that Stewart be the lead communicator with Adam, the negotiator for Amanda’s kidnappers. She learned more than she ever imagined about such fragile negotiations, including how to demand POLs—proofs of life—and how to react to “bad calls”, when forced to listen to her daughter’s
desperate cries for help. The negotiation stretched on; eventually, faced with the real possibility of her daughter’s death, Stewart engaged private hostage negotiators and fundraised the ransom money. Amanda Lindhout had been travelling with Australian photojournalist Nigel Brennan and a Somali translator when all three were abducted. Lindhout’s story became the bestselling book A House in the Sky, co-authored by Sara Corbett. Corbett describes One Day Closer as “A gripping, mother’s-eye view of Amanda Lindhout’s kidnapping ordeal.” She continues, “For any parent who has ever worried about, advocated for, and deeply loved a child, Lorinda Stewart’s honest, lion-hearted account will leave you both stunned and uplifted.” Stewart will show images of the RCMP’s covert operational center where the negotiations took place and play audio of her first phone call with the kidnappers’ negotiator. Otter Books will be on hand with copies of Stewart’s memoir. Doors open at 6:30pm. Submitted by Anne DeGrace

The best of heritage and tradition A rich heritage and a tradition of hospitality, is found under the great vaulted wooden arches of the granite building of St. Saviour’s Anglican Pro-Cathedral, in Nelson. Once a year, surrounded by Gothic framed stained glass windows, the “Inn at the Cathedral” beckons. On Saturday, November 3rd the Women’s Guild is hosting a Morning Coffee Party from 10 - 11:30 am at a cost of $6 each. Expect a freshly baked cinnamon bun or a tasty muffin, accompanied with a cup of Oso Negro coffee. You may want to invite your neighbour or your favourite aunt, if you choose to attend the High Tea, which is offered from 2 - 3:30 pm at a cost of $6 each. Dainty sandwiches and homemade sweets go with that superbly steeped pot of tea. Awaiting you is the heavenly bake sale table and specially crafted gifts – ready to give. Everyone is invited to join in the fun! Sun, rain, or blustery cold, make plans to attend the serene atmosphere , where old and new friends meet in the best sense of heritage and tradition. St. Saviour’s Anglican Pro-Cathedral is located on the corner of Ward and Silica St. – see you there! Submitted by Bonnie Holland

Selkirk College SROAM students collaborate with Nelson Outfitters Winter and another epic ski season is right around the corner. To get locals in the mood, students in the Ski Resort Operations & Management (SROAM) Program at Selkirk College are holding a window contest in downtown Nelson where one lucky shopper will win gear perfect for the months ahead. The second-year SROAMies are creating eye-catching displays in the windows of Baker Street businesses as part of their Retail Management course. “Partnering with local businesses for this real-world learning experience has been a lot of fun,” says Selkirk College Instructor Robyn Mitz. “Students value getting hands-on outside the classroom. And when they’re getting their hands on some amazing outdoor gear, they get even more excited.” As you head downtown for a fresh pair of goggles, a stylish new jacket or that new snowboard of your dreams, stop by the Village Ski Hut, Ripping Giraffe, ROAM and Valhalla Pure Outfitters for inspiration courtesy of SROAM students. Starting Monday, October 15, shoppers have the chance to vote for which window display is best and win winter gear. Go to the online entry form at selkirk.ca/shreducation and select the display that gets you the most excited for this year’s snow season. Students will win bragging rights and you will be entered into a draw for $50 from the participating business of your choice. Voting closes on November 1. The Ski Resort Operations & Management Program covers all aspects of ski resort operations, giving students a unique blend of management skills and industry knowledge to prepare them for lasting leadership roles.
