Eyes In The Forest
When you see a pygmy owl or a mountain sheep caught on film by Jim Lawrence, it’s impossible not to wonder how the acclaimed wildlife photographer got such an astonishing shot. Filmmaker Miriam Needoba set out to find the answer, stomping through forest and marsh in all weather and times of day. Her short film Eyes in the Forest: The Portraiture of Jim Lawrence marries the art form of still images and cinematography – and answers the question. L a w r e n c e’s photographs are on display at the Nelson Public Library September through October, with a special artist reception and film screening on Tuesday, October 7 at 7 pm. “I wanted to provide an experience, an intimate view of this world that is often hidden from sight but is deeply impacted by human action,”

says Needoba about the film. “I hoped that representing their world, and Jim’s experience of it, would inspire greater empathy and understanding for the wildlife we so admire.” The film reflects Lawrence’s approach as ethical photographer and environmentalist, but it also offers insight into the ways that Lawrence sees the subtlety and richness of the land and its inhabitants. This is evidenced in the photographs on display – the wind lifting the fur of a coyote or the glint in the eye of a bear with a fish. It’s clear that Lawrence is at home in the wilderness. “It is a privilege and a profound honour to observe these animals,” says Lawrence. Both artist and filmmaker will be on hand to talk about their experiences at the reception and screening.

Jumbo Hike
Upwards of 100 hikers from the East and West Kootenays, yearlings to octogenarians, converged at various points in time at the Jumbo Pass hut on Saturday, September 20 to celebrate the wild Jumbo Valley. The popular random annual hike, organized by Wildsight and the West Kootenay EcoSociety, attracted wilderness fans from Invermere, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Nelson, Kaslo and Argenta, and coincided with the splendour of the autumn larches. The Jumbo Monitoring Camp, located at the junction of Leona and Jumbo creeks, will stay functional until mid October. For more information, www.KeepItWild.ca

Dance Your Feet Off As part of the Langham’s 40th Anniversary on Thanksgiving weekend, the Langham is hosting a Dance-Your-Feet-Off Dance at The Kaslo Legion just like the OLD TIMES! Get ready to boogie the night away with some of Kaslo and the West Kootenay’s favourite dance bands and musicians. Michael Guthrie (visionary extraordinaire), who spearheaded the SAVE-THE-LANGHAM movement back in the early 70s, has put together an amazing line-up of music including Tom and Jerry and The 98s, The Roosters (yes!…with
all those usual suspects!), Swing Shift with Tom and Ruth Thomson and Trish Feenie, Chris Lingard, Bill Lynch, Michael Dorsey and Leah Main, and of course, Michael Guthrie himself…there may even be a few more guest surprises! As part of the fun, many of the Langham’s founding folks from the 70s are making their way from across Canada and the US (and even Europe!) back to Kaslo for this weekend. Spread the word to your away-buddies! Better get your tickets in advance…this is expected to sell-out. Saturday, October 11, doors open at 8 pm. Tickets in advance $12, available in Kaslo at Willow Home Boutique and Sunnyside Naturals; in Nelson at Otter Books and Eddy Music. More info at the Langham 250-353-2661 or visit www.thelangham.ca. See you there in your dancing shoes!!

Living Room Cafe In Kaslo Kaslo’s Amnesty International group is honoured to host an evening at Dan and Shelley’s on Friday October 3 with the internationally acclaimed Guatemalan activist Sandra Moran. Sandra has worked with the Guatemalan women’s and feminist movement for the past 20 years and has helped to change the face of the women’s rights movement in Guatemala. She lived in exile in Canada from 1980-1994, returning to Guatemala to co-found the Women’s Sector, an alliance of 33 women’s rights groups throughout Guatemala, and to participate in the Civil Society Assembly at the negotiations for the Peace Accords that ended Guatemala’s 36-year civil war. As a representative of the Women’s Sector, Sandra was the driving force and founder of the National Women’s Forum, a body that generated participation and proposals for women’s public policy after the signing of the Peace Accords. In 2006, she co-founded Artisan House (Casa Artesana) in Guatemala City as a an alternative meeting place and artistic space for women and other groups facing discrimination. Sandra also expresses her activism through music, and has played a strong role in the revolutionary feminist musicians’ movement. Casa Artesana provides services to promote the economic self-sufficiency and wellbeing of the 12,000 women in Guatemala’s 9 prisons. One such program is collecting clothing donations, which give women materials to sew and sell handcrafts to other inmates and visitors. Casa Artesana also advocates for improved living conditions in the prisons, and does political education trainings so that women will understand their rights. This is an evening not to be missed. Everyone is welcome. Friday, October 3, 7 pm social, coffee, goodies; 7:30 pm discussion. 628 Arena Avenue. Info: Linda Lynch 353-7457.
The public is invited to a free screening of the movie Breastmilk on October 1, 12 pm in the Multipurpose Room of the Nelson Health Unit (2nd Floor, 333 Victoria Street). A light lunch will be provided. This 90-minute film explores breastfeeding in relation to current female roles, expectations and ideals. This film takes a broad view on some of the real-life predicaments that may make it difficult to achieve both personal and societal goals with regards to breastfeeding. To view the movie trailer, visit: http://breastmilkthemovie.com/trailer.html. All are welcome to attend this free film screening! In an effort to normalize breastfeeding in our community, Nelson and area women are invited to share their breastfeeding photographs in downtown store windows from October 1 to 7. The intent is to display as many breastfeeding photos as possible! Women are invited to submit breastfeeding photos to nelsonbreastfeeds@gmail. com. Any Nelson businesses who would like to participate in a breastfeeding window display should also contact: nelsonbreastfeeds@gmail.com

HOPLIND, BYRON
Fritz Furtner
February 26, 1950 - September 24, 2014 Fritz passed away on Wednesday, September 24th of pancreatic cancer. Many will know Fritz from the Plaza Bakery in Castlegar, his business of 30 years. A celebration of Fritz Furtner’s life will be held at the Castlegar Community Complex on Wednesday, October 1st from 2 pm to 5 pm. All are welcome to share your favourite stories with loved ones as we remember him.
[\
April 15, 1922 to September 1, 2014
The elder son of Norwegian immigrants, Byron was born in Rossland, spent his early years in Coryell, worked in the Salmo mines, and his long life came to an end in Passmore, BC. At LV Rogers High School in Nelson he was a star basketball player, playing tournaments throughout the province. He worked as a miner all his life, mostly at the HB and Emerald mines and later in Trail. As well as operating every type of heavy equipment, Byron was often a trouble-shooter, blasting dangerous overhangs and salvaging stuck gear. After retirement, he lived in the home his father had built in Passmore, gardening and mushroom-picking, scything his field, feeding wild birds and tending the blackberries that he gave to his neighbours. Byron was a life-long vegetarian with a strong pioneer spirit. He was a well-read person, a self-educated thinker with little use for “jackasses”. Byron will be missed by many friends and neighbours. Special thanks to RN Margo McLean and the Interior Health Home Support team, Drs. Barbour, Cochrane and Janz, Dorothy Mackenzie of Valhalla Riversuites, staff at Mountain Lake Seniors Community and many local supporters who respected Byron’s wish to live independently for as long as possible. An informal remembrance of Byron will be held on Saturday, October 18 from 2 to 4 pm at the Passmore Hall.

Dirk Tensen Rinehart Pidcock Of Kaslo, BC died at home peacefully, September 18, after nearly two years of significant health issues. He was predeceased by his parents Grant and Betty Rinehart of Nyssa, Oregon. He will be lovingly missed by his wife of fifty-two years, Karen Enstrom Rinehart Pidcock, children Ann Rinehart of Nanaimo, Nathan Rinehart of Golden, Asia Sung Rinehart of Toronto, and grandson Jordan Rinehart of Campbellville, Ontario; sisters: Kristin Ginther (Daniel) of Central Point, Oregon, Gretchen Kimsey (Rustin) of The Dalles, Oregon, Jan Rinehart of Portland, Oregon, and Triena Hiatt of Ontario, Oregon; sister-in-law, Gretchen Cloke of Tacoma, Washington; two aunts, one uncle, many cousins, nephews and nieces. Dirk was born February 1, 1939, in Nyssa, Oregon. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1961, studied theology at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California in preparation for the Episcopal priesthood. He then served three parishes in the Diocese of Eastern Oregon, before moving with his family in 1978 to direct the Sorrento Centre of the Anglican Church of Canada. From 1984 to 1991, he served as associate priest at Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver. Moving to Kaslo in the Diocese of Kootenay in 1991, Dirk and Karen served the seven congregations in
Nakusp, New Denver, Kaslo, Balfour, Willow Point, Nelson, and South Slocan. As Missioner of the Kokanee region for twelve years, Dirk was a pioneer in developing innovative ways the Anglican Church might continue to know a healthy presence in communities that have difficulty supporting traditional ministries. Dirk believed each faith community had all the gifts necessary to be alive to the teachings of Jesus…caring for one another and for the world about them…ever-building the spiritual strength and confidence of the membership. He ended his professional life as Archdeacon of the Kootenays, while serving voluntarily as priest to the end.
Dirk, as a lover of the natural world, became an avid birder, initiating and leading other keen birders of the
North Kootenay Lake area, and more recently enjoyed wildlife photography. Throughout his life he loved caring for animals, including many cat and dog companions, raised goats, rabbits, and chickens and grew food in the garden. He loved fishing and camping trips with his family and Kaslo godchildren. He served as president of the Kaslo Hospice Society and served on the board of the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake Society. Both in Vancouver and Kaslo, Dirk encouraged and supported refugee sponsorship, and served three years on the board of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund of the Anglican Church of Canada. Although a diagnosis of chronic leukemia slowed him down during the past two years of treatment, he continued living life to the fullest, with gratitude for each new day. He and Karen were so grateful for the compassionate medical care received in both the Kaslo Health Centre and the Nelson Hospital, especially acknowledging Dr. Phillip Malpass and the nurses on the chemo ward. Most who were privileged to know Dirk will greatly miss the gentle, supportive and kind person he was.
The Memorial Eucharist will be October 3, Friday, 1:30 pm at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, followed by a
reception at St. Andrew’s Hall, Kaslo. In lieu of any flowers, the family welcomes donations either to Kootenay Lake Hospital, [3 View St. Nelson BC V1L 2V1] or to “St. Mark’s Church – Together in Mission Campaign” [Box 1059 Kaslo BC V0G 1M0] Online condolences may be expressed at www.thompsonfs.ca .

Buttons is my name. I’m a 3(sweet)years-old short haired, black and white female. I gets along well with dogs and cats, after a short initial adjustment period of course. I’m not used to playing outside since my previous family kept me indoors, but I could try it and – who knows? I would probably make a great mouser if given the chance. Jumbo Update Autumn 2014
• To Place Your Ad Call 1-800-663-4619 •
The following information is derived from two recent phone interviews with my government contact person, the Manager of Major Projects with Resort Development, and my other government contact person, Manager of Policy and Compliance with the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). Glacier Resorts, Ltd. (GRL), parent corporation of the Jumbo Resort development, has made applications for the following development components within the Controlled Recreation Area base area of Jumbo Mountain Resort Municipality Phase #1: roads, day lodge, service building, water reservoir, lift line. Each would have tenures with development conditions. On October 12, Glacier Resorts’ final 5 year Temporary Conditional Certificate will be finished. Preceding and after that date, Mary Polak, Minister of Environment, and perhaps Associate Deputy Minister Doug Caul will do air and on-theground assessments looking for indications of a “substantial start”. Then they will deliberate. There is no timeline for a yes or no decision to be made public. If yes, Glacier Resorts will receive a permanent EAO certificate. It will have the same 195 conditions as the currently terminating 5 year conditional certificate. If no, the company could apply for another EAO full resort development assessment. Or, maybe, if on October 12 there’s nothing much to lose, they could walk away. The Ktunaxa judicial review appeal is filed but no court date. The Eco-Society’s judicial review has been accepted but no court date has been announced. Submitted by Rowena Eloise, Argenta, for the West Kootenay Coalition for Jumbo Wild
