Suicide is a major public health problem. The psychological pain that leads each of these individuals to take their lives is unimaginable. Their deaths leave families and friends bereft, and often have a major ripple effect on communities. Suicide is the fifth leading causes of death among those aged 30-49 years in 2012 globally, and is the second leading cause of death in the 15-29 years age group in 2012 globally. Overall, it is estimated that during 2012 for each adult who died of suicide there were 27 others who made suicide attempts. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are committed to preventing suicide. These organizations recognize World Suicide Prevention Day as an important day in the international calendar. World Suicide Prevention Day brings together individuals and organizations with an interest in suicide prevention, and mobilizes efforts to save lives. Call for 2014 Project Proposals The Grassland and Rangeland Enhancement Program (GREP) provides funds to persons and organizations wishing to carry out activities on Crown Land that will enhance Rangeland and Grassland values. The program is funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and administered locally by the Kootenay Livestock Association. The GREP is currently accepting project proposals for consideration for the remainder of 2014 and for the upcoming 2015 funding year. The overriding purpose of the Grassland and Rangeland Enhancement Program is to maintain and/or enhance grassland resources while meeting conservation, environmental and recreational objectives. Some examples of projects funded to date under the GREP include rangeland fences, protection of wetlands, innovative gates and cattle-guards, restoration of damaged areas, interpretive and educational signs and invasive plant management. Applications are open to associations or societies, individuals, range tenure holders or partnerships across the Columbia Basin Region. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gudela (Judy) Hentschel on August 5th at Mountain Lake Seniors Community in Nelson. Judy was born in Mufundi, Tanzania, the youngest of three children. She had many fond memories of her childhood on a coffee and tea plantation. Her family was forced to return to Germany during World War II. Judy eventually took an agriculture course, then later moved to Canada and received training as a practical nurse in Sarnia, Ontario. Judy was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1963. She moved to Kaslo in 1978, where she became known for her loving generosity. She lived a very modest, environmentally friendly lifestyle, nurturing her small garden, teaching others about the Bible’s promise of Paradise, and providing a living demonstration of real Christian love.

Judy is survived by her loving brother, Hartfried, in Sarnia, Ontario, and a niece in Germany. She will be sincerely missed by her family of fellow believers throughout British Columbia. A memorial service was held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Nelson, on August 9th. Call Out To Internet Service Providers Serving The Basin Columbia Basin Trust is reaching out to identify smallto medium-sized local and regional Internet service providers (ISPs) that are interested in expanding connectivity and/or upgrading existing infrastructure to meet new federal standards for broadband in the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions. This appeal is being done in cooperation with the Regional Broadband Committee, comprised of the regional districts of Central Kootenay, Kootenay Boundary, East Kootenay and Columbia Shuswap, the Village of Valemount and the Ktunaxa Nation Council. Through the Digital Canada 150: Connecting Canadians initiative, the Canadian government has recently committed to $305 million in funding. More details of the
federal program and criteria for applications are expected to be released in the fall, but the Trust is working with partners and stakeholders to develop strategies to take advantage of funding. The Trust has identified some immediate priorities which include: • Establishing which ISPs are interested in collaborating with the Trust to pursue funding under the federal program. • Encouraging ISPs to update Industry Canada mapping data to confirm eligibility for federal funding before the Industry Canada deadline of August 30. The Capitol Theatre in Nelson just finished a successful presentation of this year’s Summer Youth Program presenting The Secret Garden. Thanks again to the cast, crew, staff, volunteers and sponsors who supported this invaluable youth program. And already we are in planning mode for the next community theatre event!! The Capitol Theatre is continuing its tradition of the Christmas Pantomime and is calling all pantomaniacs to audition for this year’s Bedtime Rhymes written by Lisel Forst. The open auditions will take place September 14 at the Capitol Theatre on 421 Victoria Street. We will start off at 10 am – actors aged 13 and under are invited to audition with a parent who is willing to be in the show. Community Champions In Conservation Offered $10,000 Prize BC Hydro is offering $10,000 awards to non-profit community organizations that are committed to making a difference around sustainability, conservation and environmental leadership. The 2014 Community Champions program is open to non-profit organizations across British Columbia, and five winners will be awarded $10,000 each. British Columbians will help determine the finalist through online voting. All video submissions must be in the form of a two to three-minute video and be uploaded to bchydro.com/ communitychampions by September 30. Participants are also encouraged to share their conservation initiative or show support for their favourite non-profit on social media using the hashtag #BCHCommunityChampions. BC Hydro will select 15 semi-finalists and then the public will determine five finalists by voting for their favourite videos between October 15 and November 30. There are no appointments necessary and there is no need to prepare a song; everyone will learn a song and a dance throughout the audition. The Capitol Panto Auditions customarily attract over 100 performers for around 50 parts. “Pantomimes are designed for a multi-age audience, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy, from physical comedy and one-liners, to all the singing and dancing that are traditionally seen in this type of show,” says Stephanie Fischer, the Capitol Theatre’s Executive Director. The Christmas Pantomime is a Nelson tradition that features a cast of approximately 50 comprised of local community players ranging in age from 6 – 60. There’s no better way to kick start the holiday season than to come out to the Panto with your family and boo, cheer and laugh along with your fellow Nelsonites onstage. It truly is a mainstay of local theatre. “We are thrilled to announce that the Kootenay Co-op is again sponsoring this year’s show,” says Fischer. When Aurélien Dupuis arrived in Nelson in 1991 – retiredwith children grown – the time had come: he would fulfil a lifelong dream to become a writer. Drawing from influences from his French Canadian farmstead childhood in Noëlville, Ontario, a working life in the trades as a steamfitter, and a love of rural life and nature Dupuis went on to write 18 books in French for children and adults. Dupuis launches his newest novel, Armand et Ginette ou le plaisir d’aimer, on Thursday, September 11 at 7:00 pm at the Nelson Public Library. The presentation, hosted in partnership with l’Association des francophones des Kootenays Ouest (AFKO), will be in French. “A launch for a new book by Aurelien Dupuis is long overdue,” says Nelson library adult service coordinator Anne DeGrace. “He’s so well-known and well-liked in this community. It’s a pleasure to be able to launch Armand et Ginette, and to partner with AFKO, who has been such a help in developing our contemporary French language collection.” Armand et Ginette takes place during Québec’s quiet revolution during the 1960s, a time of change in the Catholic Church’s influence on Francophone society. As the modern world encroaches on tradition, Armand – bound for the priesthood from a tender age – is faced with numerous obstacles, while what Ginette wants most is to win Armand’s heart. Book lovers will get a hint or two at the launch, as well as enjoy book and informational displays by the library and AFKO. Refreshments will be served, and books by Aurelien Dupuis will be available for purchase.

Catch Dinner! August has been a great month for fishing rainbows in Kootenay Lake. A friend of mine loves to fish around Woodbury Creek. Several times a week she grabs her kayak, heads out just a little offshore and throws out a line. On August 20 she caught a beauty. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Here is the fish!â&#x20AC;? she exclaimed, hoisting it in front of me with only two fingers tucked into the gills of a whopper. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not bad eh! Douglas Vincent Askew December 29, 1923 - August 14, 2014 A longtime resident of Nelson, Kaslo, Comox, and most recently Courtenay, Douglas Vincent Askew passed away peacefully and quietly at the Comox Valley Seniors Village on 14 August 2014. He had been a resident there since February of this year. Doug was in his 91st year and was still able to manage his life, and death, with the utmost dignity and respect. Doug was born in Bootle, England. His character was formed by his loving parents and the incredible lifetime bond he enjoyed with his brothers Cyril, Robert and Eric. It was forged in the fires of WWII, first in the Home Guard as a teenaged first responder to the bombing raids in England, and later as a Lancaster Flight Engineer flying with 419 Squadron, 6 Bomber Group. He completed a full operational tour in 1944 flying 30 missions over enemy territory, surviving where most did not, and he later flew missions in the Far East. After the war Doug’s character was further polished and nurtured by the love of his life, his wife Georgina (Jean). Doug and Jean followed the lead of his brother Eric and immigrated to Canada in 1948. Doug first worked at the Reeves MacDonald Mine at Remac BC, near Salmo, and later at the Cassiar Mine and Kootenay Forest Products in Nelson. In 1970 he started with the Workers Compensation Board of BC, eventually moving to Steveston to become one of the board’s directors. Doug and Jean maintained ties to the Kootenays, and upon his retirement they moved to Kaslo where they built their dream home on the Kaslo River. Following Jean’s death he moved to Comox in 2008. In his final months, Doug charmed the staff at the Seniors Village and was their favourite. He did this through his outstanding sense of humour, his gentlemanly demeanour, and his sincere respect for others. Even though faced with many medical challenges, Doug would always do his utmost to help himself, and he would never, never complain. A dear aunt shared a comment Doug recently sent to her after the death of another family member. He wrote “...... life is a highway that we all travel and must leave when called. Since the war I have cherished every day. I am in my 90th year and grateful for it, and am not afraid of the call. Keep strong.” Doug is survived by his three sons, Graham, Ron and Wayne and their spouses, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He donated his remains to the University of British Columbia Medical School. A memorial will be held in his honour at Kaslo BC in the fall. Like all of you, we shall miss him terribly, but know that he had lived his life to the fullest. We should all be as lucky.
