COUNTDOWN TO COMPLETION W O R K I N G W I T H T H E K T U N AX A N AT I O N

The Waneta Expansion Project offered a unique opportunity to work with the Ktunaxa Nation. A project of this scale required a large number of workers from a variety of trades. The Ktunaxa Nation was able to work with the owners to create employment opportunities for 13 Ktunaxa Nation citizens, including trades apprentices and journeymen.

PROJECT LENGTH 2010 - 2015 EMPLOYMENT At peak construction over 450 people worked directly on the project Equity hiring provisions and apprenticeship opportunities

Some Ktunaxa Nation workers shared their experience on the project:

WAGES AND BENEFITS

“Overall, I had a great time on the project. I met a whole bunch of people and made new friends. My time on the Waneta site gave me some amazing workplace experiences. I plan on going back to school to continue this learning experience I started in Waneta.”

Regional spending on good and services exceeds $215 million - over $40 million in wages

“I came onto the project early. It was tough being away from my family but the experience I received on the site, particularity working at great heights, has helped me greatly in my construction career.” Ktunaxa Nation citizens received on-thejob training and education throughout the project. Many of those who were employed have chosen to continue their training that began on the Waneta Expansion Project. This collaboration between the Ktunaxa Nation and the project owners is a shining example of how organizations can come together to create employment and inspire lifelong learning.

Congratulations to Darlene & Cliff winners of the

Kaslo Is for Lovers Package in the Pennywise Valentine Contest

“Thank you, thank you, thank you Pennywise! We had the most wonderful, romantic, cozy, delicious, Valentines ever in Kaslo, BC thanks to you. Our condo at the Kaslo Hotel was so extravagant, relaxing, comfortable and the girls at the front desk were awesome. The gift certificates were very much appreciated, we got some keepsakes of the weekend. I gave the Kaslo Florist gift certificate to a lady in the Bluebelle Bistro when we were having our Sunday morning brunch and I am planning to gift a coworker with the Ainsworth Hot Spring passes … We were so blessed, I have to share my good fortune :) The dinner at the Rosewood is incomparable, the brunch at the Bluebelle bistro was to die for; and everyone we met, restaurant owners, storekeepers, clerks, waiters/waitresses were so very welcoming, genuinely kind and friendly to us. We will always cherish this special time in our hearts and will recommend that everyone take the time to visit Kaslo, it is a very, very beautiful town. Once again, words cannot describe the thankfulness we have in our hearts for the special, once-in-a-lifetime gratifying experience. Snachailya (Thank you) Darlene & Cliff aka “Tonto and Kemo Sabe”

Congratulations also to Allan Pusey winner of the

Day of Peace Yogathon

The WK Yoga For MS Support Group came into being two years ago when the Director of the WK MS Society, Lonnie Facchina asked me to teach a specialty class for people living with MS and their unpaid care providers. We began with one class a week, then coffee parties, a summer picnic, and Christmas dinner parties. By the second year we had added a second weekly class, fundraising, and through the generous donations by many in our community, buying specialty yoga props for this special group and a cart to store our yoga supplies in. Our newest activity is our craft club where we are making wellness products. We are asking our West Kootenay community to help support the MS yoga group by offering our Day Of Peace Yogathon, where we can all come to practice yoga in some of its many forms in the very beautiful and peaceful setting of the Brilliant Cultural Centre. We hope you will join us March 7 for a wonderful day of meditation, singing, laughing, eating and practicing yoga under the direction of seven yoga teachers. Our event is inclusive and can be enjoyed on many levels. Bring your mat to practice, or sit in the balcony to enjoy the many activities including the yoga performances. You will also have the chance to win prizes or earn an award. Please go to our website for all the information about our event; http://westkootenayyogafo.wix.com/day-of-peace Submitted by Evelyn Beaudet

LAW OFFICE

YOU AND THE LAW

EMPLOYEE THEFT IS JUST THEFT – OR IS IT? You might think that one kind of theft is the same as any other. But defrauding or stealing from your boss or at your workplace is treated very differently from other kinds of theft by Crown prosecutors and the courts. It’s much more serious than, say, shoplifting, even if the value of the property involved is similar. Jail sentences are often handed down. So if you’re faced with a potential charge like this, take steps immediately to talk to your criminal defence lawyer to minimize the fallout. Theft and fraud are criminal offences and fall into two categories: • theft or fraud under $5,000 • theft or fraud over $5,000 A more serious charge, like embezzlement (i.e. theft from an employer of large sums of money over a long period of time), carries a potential jail sentence of up to 10 or more years, especially if there are aggravating circumstances. But even for theft or fraud under $5,000, the Crown can choose to proceed by way of indictment (which is more serious than a summary conviction procedure). You can still get a jail sentence of up to two years. And you face other consequences if convicted – a criminal record, travel restrictions, employment hassles with your current boss and trouble getting future work. So why is defrauding or stealing from your employer or at work treated differently than other kinds of theft? An employer is entitled to expect honesty from all employees. Your employer must be able to trust you, especially since you

have far greater opportunities to take advantage of your boss than outsiders. Theft or fraud by an employee, no matter what form it takes, involves a serious breach of that trust and so it’s viewed in quite a different light than casual one-off thefts by outsiders. Employee theft or fraud takes many forms – from kids on their first job taking money from the till, cashiers ringing in false prices for friends or family, and giving unauthorized discounts and taking gift cards or coupons, to sophisticated schemes by bookkeepers or other employees involving phony invoices or forged cheques to divert employer funds. All this costs employers billions of dollars annually. Stores and retailers lose as much or more to internal employee thefts each year as to thefts by outsiders. In these kinds of “breach of trust” theft or fraud cases, even if you’ve never been in trouble with the police before and/or the stolen property is returned, Crown prosecutors will lay charges. If you are convicted or plead guilty to these offences, you may still benefit from a good defence lawyer. A good defence lawyer may be able to negotiate a conditional sentence for you. This would mean you may be able to serve your sentence under house arrest, rather than in jail, if you meet the conditions imposed. Be aware that these cases are very serious, with potential long-lasting impact on your life. So get good legal advice right away. Your lawyer will assist you throughout the process to help net you the most beneficial possible outcome.

The Greater Trail Hospice Society is looking for swimmers to participate in their annual Swimathon to raise funds for the program. Swimmers support hospice by committing to swim a certain distance and then collecting pledges. The Swimathon is the major fundraising event of the year and will happen on March 4 between noon and 8 pm at the Trail Aquatic and Leisure Centre. All money raised at the Swimathon will support hospice in the Greater Trail area. This event can be a great opportunity for experienced swimmers to get wet for a great cause. If your resolution was to get fit in 2015 and you have not started yet, training for the Swimathon will give you a good start. For runners, this is a great cross training opportunity. The Greater Trail Hospice Society provides trained volunteers to provide bedside respite both in a home setting or in a care facility. A trained professional works with the families and medical personnel to provide symptom management and co-ordinate access to resources for the client and their family. The Society also provides community awareness events, training for volunteers and medical professionals, grief support programs, palliative equipment loans and a library dealing with issues surrounding end of life issues. If you would like to swim for hospice, information packages complete with pledge forms are available from the Trail Hospice office at KIRO Wellness Centre 1500 Columbia Ave, call 250-364-6204, and the Trail Aquatic Centre; or register at www.hospiceswimathon 2015.weebly.com The Greater Trail Hospice Society is a registered charity so tax deductible receipts are issued for donations. Information about hospice is also available online at www.trailhospice.org Hospice ... we support quality of living in the process of dying, and healthy transition through grief for the bereaved. Estate Planning Seminars

Most executors, when asked if they would ever take that task on again, answer with a resounding No. Seminar presenter, Mr. Kevin Holte, a district manager with Familyside/Purple Shield says, “Executors, usually at a very emotional and stressful time in their lives, need to complete a task they have never done or did once twenty years ago. They are required to find and gather specific documentation, know who to contact, pay numerous fees ... for many it is daunting. That’s why we are thrilled to be able to provide this important information.” The Estate Settlement seminar will be presented in Nelson, March 18, 6:30 pm at the Hume Hotel; and Salmo, March 19, 6:30 pm at the Salmo Legion. Everyone is invited to attend. Please RSVP by emailing Thompson Funeral Service at tfsltd@netidea.com or calling 250-352-3613 to reserve your seat. Submitted by Holly Pender-Love

Ray Seeger

1934-2015

Raymond Seeger and brother Ronald were born October 4, 1934 on the Lachman farm outside Alsask. They were the youngest children of Edna and Wesley Seeger, following siblings Keith and Marjorie. Ray became a heavy-duty mechanic for Finning Tractor in Calgary, where he married Lorraine and they had three children, Wesley, Sherri and Steve. When the children were older, Ray was transferred to Nelson, BC. He remarried to Elaine and Jeff was born shortly after. Some time later he changed careers and began driving logging truck out of Kaslo, BC.

After retiring he relocated back to Alberta, settling in Delia to live closer to his twin brother. Here he lived out his later years happily assisting local farmers and house sitting; gardening and tinkering; fishing and hunting; and sitting among the disciples of Luke’s morning coffee meetings. Ray Seeger died in his Delia home on February 9, 2015. He is survived by his brother Ron; children Wesley, Sherri and Jeff ; grandson Cillian; and nieces and nephews. A memorial was held at Delia Community Centre in Delia, Alberta on February 16, 2015. More than 100 friends and family were in attendance.

Val Val is a spayed, mid-size (about 40 lbs), 2 year old border collie-retriever cross, with a lovely temperament. She is slightly submissive and very friendly at the same time. She just loves to snuggle and be right beside her person. She will do well with some formal training, and probably would love agility, as she has enormous energy and joie de vivre. Valerie needs a fenced yard, to prevent her from following her nose when she is unsupervised, and long daily walks. She may not be good with cats, we have yet to test her. She greets new dogs with friendly play. She has lived with a toddler, and tended to herd, so older kids may be a better fit. But in the end, it's all about the ball. She could chase and retrieve all day; a good throwing arm, and a person who loves to hike, will be a great fit. Call KAAP at 250-551-1053 or visit kaap.ca/adopt/valerie.

Small Business Owners: Apply Now For Wage Subsidies

If you own a small business in the Columbia Basin, you can get financial help to hire a student over the summer by applying for a wage subsidy from Columbia Basin Trust’s Summer Works Program. To help businesses offer full-time summer jobs to high school and post-secondary students, the program provides a $7 wage subsidy for entry-level jobs and an $8 wage subsidy for career-related jobs. Since 2010, Summer Works has helped create up to 150 student jobs each summer in the Basin. “We are really pleased with the success and continued growth of the Summer Works Program, it’s been positive

for everyone involved. Business gets the help of an extra staff person and the students are able to stay close to home to gain valuable work experience during summer months,” said Lisa Kilpatrick, Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits, Columbia Basin Trust. People’s Pharmacy in Nakusp was one of the businesses that benefited from the program last year. “It is a great program for us,” said owner Troy Clark. “It allowed us to support a local student working toward his degree and gave him workplace experience and training needed for his career as a pharmacist.” Summer Works also helped student Taylor Reitmeier. “This summer job has been the perfect opportunity to learn. Everything I see and do here will relate to my career cont’d on pg 46

Self Leadership: On Purpose Or On Chance? Why is it that we humans make life so much harder than it has to be? We do this in so many ways unknowingly. Why? Because we are creatures of habit and therefore run our life mostly on autopilot! Our thinking always equals the results we have in life...100% of the time! Thinking leads to words, then behaviors, then actions, then character, and ultimately our destiny. It is wired in or programmed in our brain which comes from our mind... our thoughts. Most was wired in our brains from 0-6 years old. If we allow our thinking to go unchecked and to run on autopilot on chance (based on our past experiences that trigger us), instead of on purpose, it can and does cause us an untold amount of preventable negative results in relationships across the board and also has negative effects in our body and all areas of our life. It also undermines our confidence, limits positive choices and decisions, and has a negative impact on those we serve or are in relationship with. Our negative toxic thoughts also causes brain damage in our brains. We can end up shooting our self in the foot by adding so much unnecessary pain and additional problems in all areas of our life that strains, damages or destroys relationships in business, families and community. Our relationship with our self is the most important relationship we have (aside from God Almighty) because...wherever you go...there you are! So it is key to success to develop a good relationship with self and to create our own Personal Master Plan (PMP) to operate from... On purpose! Not chance! It is next to impossible to have happiness and peace, to be effective or have success in all the various roles we have in life, without leadership over our self first! Make sense? Stress is at the root of much of our problems – and busy is also stressful. It wreaks havoc in our brain and body and subsequently all areas of our life relationships. The good news is it was wired in, it can be rewired out! It is not hard, in fact, a life on purpose is much easier than a life on chance. You can learn how to have leadership over your life with ease, build resilience, have better productivity, make wise decisions, have health and wellness, create results you say you want, and have success in every area of your life when you take responsibility for leadership over yourself! So, how do you do that? Take personal responsibility to learn and grow, especially in how you were wonderfully made aka... the brain & body science, to get them working for you with practices that work (and easy to incorporate in a busy life), instead of against you, by building new positive neuropathways in your brain. The multi benefits yield a very high return on your investment in you, and creates extraordinary life results! L to R, Tim Powell, Nelson Food Cupboard Board chair, Marilyn Lawrence, Board member, Am Naqvi, Columbia Basin Trust Board member, Marya Skrypiczajko, Nelson Food Cupboard coordinator, Sandi and Brooke Leatherman, property owners, Kim Charlesworth, garden coordinator.

Nelson Food Cupboard Garden Over the next few months, the Nelson Food Cupboard will be transforming the site of the former Grizzelle’s Greenhouse on Hoover and Ward Streets into a large scale vegetable garden. Use of the land has been donated to the Nelson Food Cupboard by Brooke and Sandi Leatherman, and the Columbia Basin Trust has stepped in to fund much of the project. “Over the last two years, we have involved our customers in various gardening initiatives to great success – they claimed the gardening experience was beneficial to their physical and mental health, they appreciated having a way to give back to the Food Cupboard, and they helped grow a lot of vegetables to stock our shelves,” says Kim Charlesworth, Nelson Food Cupboard coordinator. “So when the farmer who has grown our vegetables for the last seven years told us she would no longer be able to do so, we decided we wanted to give it a try ourselves.” Charlesworth said the key to success was finding a plot of arable land in close proximity to the Food Cupboard so that Food Cupboard customers could easily get involved as volunteers. When she called on Brooke and Sandi Leatherman to ask if they would consider donating the use of the property on the corner of Ward and Hoover Streets that is just 4½ blocks from the Food Cupboard, they immediately agreed to the idea. This garden will be a community garden, but for a specific community – Nelson Food Cupboard customers. With the support of a garden coordinator, they will be growing vegetables for themselves and others who rely on the Food Cupboard. Food Cupboard customers will be encouraged to join work parties to build infrastructure such as fences and benches; volunteer to plant, weed and harvest the vegetables; deliver the produce to the Food Cupboard; and more. “They will develop pride in the project and their contributions; and these positive feelings will carry over to other parts of their lives,” added Charlesworth. Volunteers from the general public will be welcome to contribute in similar ways. Many businesses are already volunteering their expertise and labour. Soon, DDC Excavating will be re-contouring the land to better suit the needs of the garden. Bloom Garden Design is creating the site plan in consultation with Thomas Loh, Urban Systems, Glade Valley Gardens and Deverney Engineering Services. And then volunteers will get to work planting the garden. If you would like to contribute, please contact the Nelson Food Cupboard at 250-354-1633. And to stay up to date on garden developments, visit their website: www. foodcupboard.org and facebook page. Submitted by Marya Skrypiczajko
